Music production team brings together students, locals to create new, inclusive music community

ASST. A&E EDITOR Sola Productions is a music group that was formed by California Baptist University students in order to unite people through creative content.

Jake Driscoll, sophomore graphic design major, Andrew Pirkle, Jacob Adler, both junior applied theology majors, and Miguel Ángel Iniesta, junior applied theology and film production double major, make up the production team that hosts house shows for people of all backgrounds, beliefs and ages. They said they want people to enjoy these shows, meet different people and hear new music.

Coming from CBU gives them a connection to Christians, but they want to be open to non-Christians, as well, to find a common ground where

both groups could have the same experience.

Sola Productions emphasizes that everyone is welcome and they want to make their next event the best in every possible way.

In February, Sola Productions hosted two concerts: “Casa Blanca” on Feb. 1 and “House Show” on Feb. 23. Their shows feature multiple bands and a crowd connection like no other.

Sola Productions promotes the performing bands through social media because of the impact of Instagram. From their account @solaproductions, they post photos from past shows, as well as fliers for upcoming shows to showcase new events.

Iniesta, producer for Sola Productions, said Sola Productions is a team that curates and creates events for a mix of Christians and non-Christians alike to enjoy the overall culture of music.

Iniesta received an internship in Portland at a nonprofit organization called “Humble Beast,” which emphasizes the idea of the disciples of God through their theology and creativity for the worship of God. The internship inspired him to want to recreate a group of creative individuals who share a passion for music in Southern California.

“It all started with the idea of just having a team of creatives that want to develop further theologically and creatively,” Iniesta said.

Driscoll, producer for Sola Productions, said the house parties have grown at an almost outof-control rate since their first concert in early February.

ASST. LIFESTYLE EDITOR Located in downtown Los Angeles, The Last Bookstore is California’s largest new and used book and vinyl store, holding more than a quarter million books as well as Instagram-famous photo ops.

The two-story bookstore includes books of all genres, the Arts & Rare Book Annex, the famous book tunnel through which visitors can walk, as well as thousands of vinyl records.

Throughout the store, there are different photo backdrops, art pieces and shelving units that cause lines of visitors to form and wait for pictures.

Malorie Gutierrez, freshman pre-nursing major, said she enjoys all that the bookstore offers visitors, even nonbook lovers.

“My favorite aspects were how aesthetically pleasing it was and how it seemed to have something for everyone. There weren’t just books and I really liked that,” Gutierrez said.

Two famous photo spots are the stacks and an arrangement of books on the shelf that form a perfect circle through which visitors can peek.

When people struggle with mental illnesses, looking for a hand to hold or a shoulder to rest on during difficult times is sometimes necessary.

Mental illnesses can come in many different forms, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and more.

These mental illnesses can cause dreary thoughts and bring minds to worst-case scenarios, remembering painful times or worrying in a 24/7 loop, causing people to lose sleep, healthy thought patterns and peace of mind.

When friends suffer from a mental illness, a relationship with them can change from one of fun to a time of caring for them through the friendship.

As those battling mental illness can attest, being a compassionate friend is what they need during this time.

It can be easy for those who have never been affected by a mental illness to not understand, oversimplify or excuse men-

World-renowned violinist Chloe Trevor is joining California Baptist University’s Symphony Orchestra March 8 for its third concert of the classics series.

The concert will be divided into three parts. The first part will be “Suppé’s Poet and Peasant Overture,” composed

by Franz Von Suppe and conducted by CBU graduate student Flora Xing.

During the second part, Trevor will perform the Sibelius Violin Concerto, which was written by Jean Sibelius in 1904.

The third part will be Franck’s Symphony in D minor, written by Cesar Franck in 1888.

Franck’s piece will be conducted by Dr. Gene Moon, conductor of CBU’s Symphony Orchestra and associate professor of music.

Moon, who has known Trevor for approximately five years, said he was excited to bring such a successful Christian musician to CBU.

When played by someone as skilled and energetic as Chloe, it will be unforgettable.

“It is unique that we are a Christian university and Chloe herself is a Christian,” Moon said. “It’s nice that we have that in common and can use this experience to do what we as Christians were meant to do, which is bring glory to Christ.”

Moon and Trevor’s relationship began in Texas and has turned into a lasting friendship over the course of the last five years.

“Chloe was my first guest soloist at a previous school in Texas; I was completely enamored by her,” Moon said. “I brought her to other schools I worked for later, and she taught master classes.”

CBU orchestra students, such as Elisa Laraway, sophomore civil engineering ma-

jor, said they look forward to the opportunity to perform with someone as renowned as Trevor.

“I’ve always been amazed by the energy in her playing.

It seems like she’s constantly pouring 100 percent of her effort into her playing, and she’s passionate about the music she performs,” Laraway said.

“I’m looking forward to learning from her, both from what she says and how she plays.”

Laraway also said she was impressed by Trevor and how open she is about her faith on social media.

“In a time when talking about faith on social media can be intimidating, she integrates it into a lot of what she posts,” Laraway said.

tra have been rehearsing for months as they prepared for Trevor’s arrival.

In anticipation of the event, Moon initiated a FaceTime call with Trevor so the orchestra could see her before the big day.

“It was amazing when Dr. Moon streamed Chloe in. We got to talk to her directly and it calmed our nerves,” said Hunter Spitzer, senior instrumental performance and history double major. “We’re all so excited for her to perform with us.”

Laraway said she hopes the music presented will be inspiring.

“CBU students should come see this performance because it will be amazing and inspiring, whether students usually listen to orchestral music or not,” Laraway said.

“The Sibelius Violin Concerto is such a passionate and beautiful piece. When played by someone as skilled and energetic as Chloe, it will be unforgettable.”

The performance will be held March 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Crosspoint Church in Chino.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proposed Feb. 7 the Green New Deal, a progressive resolution that pushes reform for climate change in an effort that she said is to create jobs and add balance to the economy.

Ocasio-Cortez’s first piece of legislation is co-sponsored by Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Massachusetts) and highly supported by retired Senate members.

If enacted, the Green New Deal will require an estimated $93 trillion and will be executed over a 10-year period.

The 14-page resolution discusses issues surrounding fires, droughts, rising sea levels, violent storms, famine and mass migration.

The proposal will also seek to bring greenhouse gas emissions to zero and replace 100 percent of energy needs with renewable sources.

“Today is the day that we truly embark on a comprehensive agenda of economic, social and racial justice in the United

States of America,” said Ocasio-Cortez at a press conference for the new resolution. “That’s what this agenda is all about.

Because climate change and our environmental changes are one of the biggest existential threats to our way of life—not just as a nation but as a world.

“We are here to say that small incremental policy changes are not enough.”

She added that the bold and non-binding resolution will also seek to create jobs and push for equality in the workspace.

Other highlights include providing healthcare to more people, ensuring justice for minorities and helping communities struggling with poverty.

“However, the resolution includes very few details on how the federal government will accomplish these goals. The real impact of the Green New Deal will be on the 2020 election. Both political parties will attempt to use the Green New Deal to rally their respective bases.”

The Green New Deal reportedly attempts to address global warming and income inequality, which are issues that are highly relevant for Democrats.

Marlena Muro, freshman film major, said the Green New Deal is socialism disguised as a

way to solve the issue of climate change.

“It seems unrealistic to me and not probable given the cost,” Muro said. “In its current form, I don’t think it will pass, and it needs major work if it were to pass.”

In contrast, Aaren Villela, freshman business administration major, said she thinks the Green New Deal is an excellent opportunity to get things on the right track.

“It is something that the U.S. can achieve and we must lead the fight against climate change,” Villela said.

The Green New Deal has been called a “Communist economic doctrine” by many Republicans.

It is backed by many Democratic senators and House members, including 2020 presidential contenders Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker and Julian Castro.

Ocasio-Cortez and her efforts with the Green New Deal are just one example of the Democratic party’s new agenda.

Trump declares national emergency: A closer look

President Donald J. Trump declared a national emergency Feb. 15 after Congress denied him the funds needed to build a border wall along the U.S.–Mexico border.

Trump asked for $5.7 billion for the wall but was only granted $1.375 billion by Congress.

Declaring a national emergency allows the president to use $3.6 billion of military funds to construct the wall.

Along with funds diverted from other programs, he has also been authorized $1.375 billion for the fencing. In total, this gives Trump an $8 billion budget to build the wall.

Trump stated that criminals, illegal immigrants and drugs coming through Mexico pose a major threat to the American people and he said the situation requires immediate action.

He admitted in a press conference that a national emergency was not necessary, but it would speed up the process of funding the wall.

Dr. Chase Porter, assistant professor of political science, explained Trump’s reasoning behind calling for a national emergency.

“President Trump felt the need to invoke this emergency declaration because he failed to secure the necessary funding from Congress to fulfill his promise to build the wall, even after his government shutdown

gambit,” Porter said. “The declaration is part of a complex legal maneuver that allows the President to shift money from various budget sources and dedicate it to funding the wall.”

Porter went on to say he does not expect the declaration to impact the border wall one way or another.

Students at CBU shared their own opinions on whether Trump should have called the national emergency and how they feel this will affect the United States.

Liliane Perez, freshman nursing major, said Trump’s decision to call for a national emergency seems presumptuous and is only dividing the nation.

“I don’t think this is going to ultimately solve the issues with which Trump is concerned,” Perez said. “It seems to be causing controversy and making politicians angry.”

Trump is working hard to make his plans go into action. However, Democrats have the numbers to bring up a vote of disapproval every six months until the president withdraws his state of emergency.

Congress also has the power to sieze millions of dollars from miliatary spending.

It is clear some politicans are willing to do whatever it takes to stop the wall.

Ali Ann Gillett, freshman nutritional science major, said she is doubtful that Trump will get what he wants.

“Trump declaring the national emergency is only prolonging the wall,” Gillett said. “He cannot take land without approval from Congress and I don’t think he will get the approval he seeks.”

After hearing news of the national emergency, 16 states filed a federal lawsuit against Trump.

The complaint, led by California, seeks to stop the order and charges Trump of abusing the separation of powers.

While Trump has the ability to call for a national emergency, the argument is that declaring it was not necessary.

After Congress returns from recess, the next step is for them to evaluate a potential joint resolution against Trump’s declaration. Despite the number of states opposing the national emergency, most likely it is not enough to overcome a presidential veto.

California is leading a lawsuit against President Donald J. Trump in response to his declaration of a national emergency.

The lawsuit, which is also filed by 15 other states, claims the new declaration was unconstitutional as it overstepped the separation of powers.

Trump declared a national emergency Feb. 15 in order to fund a border wall along the U.S.–Mexico border, something that has been at the top of his agenda since his campaigning in 2015.

If the president wins the suit, he will have access to $8 billion to partially fund the wall.

The emergency declaration will redirect money from the military’s construction fund and the Department of Defense’s counter-drug activities fund.

After the declaration, Trump signed a bill that ensures the government will be funded through Sept. 30.

As for the lawsuit, this is the 46th lawsuit against Trump’s administration that the state of California has issued, ranging from issues on immigration to protecting the environment to the Affordable Care Act.

Changes come to Academic Advising

The Office of Academic Advising at California Baptist University went through significant changes to the structure and format of the program beginning Feb. 26.

These changes include assigning each student to a specific academic adviser as well as a more focused specialization of each adviser in a specific area of CBU academics.

Popular fitness trends leave long-term health problems

Staying fit is often a battle about which many college students are pressured to worry.

As a result, one might turn to trending fads that can actually do more harm than good.

Fitness fads include popularized ways of achieving weight goals, including weightloss pills, waist trainers, juice cleanses, extreme carb cutting and more. The problem is that following these trendy fads can produce harmful side effect.

Many people turn to weight loss pills in the hope that they will simply solve all their problems. Nevertheless, weight loss pills have been known to contain harmful chemicals and increase risk of heart problems and strokes.

Weight-loss pills provide short-term results and people end up wasting money on something that can be harmful.

Aaron Logerstedt, personal trainer at the CBU Recreation Center, said some weight-loss pills can work specifically for people with diabetes or other prescription-based health problems.

“The majority of weight-loss pills are just hype and marketing fads,” Logerstedt said.

“Most of them are thermogenic-based, which basically means you sweat more, giving the illusion that more calories and fat are being burned.

Waist trainers, which have

been popularized by celebrities in recent years, are basically modern-day corsets but people are actually wearing them to workout and achieve a specific body image.

Waist trainers can be harmful to organs and cause permanent damage because the human body is not designed to be squeezed and molded into different shapes.

Wearing a waist trainer can also limit the flow of oxygen and blood within the body, resulting in difficulty breathing and fatigue or dizziness. This method of losing weight is unhealthy and can cause serious longterm problems for the body.

Juice cleansing, another popular trend, refers to a weeklong process of substituting meals for health juices. These cleanses are designed to detox and flush out the body.

However, Logerstedt said cleansing has side effects of which people should be aware.

“It can cause your body to form oxalate, which is an organ-

ic acid found in many plants and if consumed in large quantities can be damaging to the kidneys,” Logerstedt said.

Some resort to extreme carb-cutting to lose weight and maintain a fit body image.

Jazmin Oseguera, sophomore biology major, said fitness trends like this can have negative effects.

“Diets like extreme carb-cutting will make you become tired, fatigued, and you will have headaches because you are depriving your body of the nutrients that will provide you long-term storage and energy,” Oseguera said.

“Finding a long–term fitness plan should be personal and something that works for your mind, body and soul so your journey through this area of your life can be healthy and last a lifetime.”

Lia Mayerski, junior public health major, said people often resort to popular fitness trends as a quick fix to their problems.

“I want to know all the facts before I try something like what are some of the ingredients, what are the long-term benefits, what are the long-term consequences,” Mayerski said.

Fitness trends often only portray the short-term benefits as opposed to the long-term side effects.

People should look closely at the pros and cons before being persuaded by the delight of instant gratification as this could be harmful to one’s health later.

Bordon said mental illnesses including depression or anxiety should be addressed with as much concern as any other illness such as dementia, which has influenced his family.

“It’s difficult because you would have to be introduced multiple times to someone you knew so much about and had a relationship with, but they had no idea,” Bordon said. “It was so innocent as everything around him was new and exciting for him, but it was also so cruel because he had no power in it, and the person you knew wasn’t there anymore.”

Bordon said he saw how loved ones continued to stay strong for one another. Having a strong and healthy support system can make mental health problems easier to navigate.

“His wife would stick by his side through all of this. She listened and took care of him even when he forgot she was his wife.

Aiding those with mental illnesses can start with those three steps: be joyful, be assuring and keep a positive mood.

However, caring for those with mental illnesses sometimes requires more than just being an optimistic light in their life.

Lauren Elkins, junior film studies major, said she has cared for her friends in multiple aspects to support them through mental illnesses.

“I’ve had two friends, one who suffered from bipolar disorder and another with extreme ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder),” Elkins said. “I was no longer just their friend, but instead, I was everything keeping them afloat or sometimes even their enemy.

“People with mental illnesses aren’t crazy. They are amazing human beings and God has a specific purpose for those with the illness. Listen to them and make sure they’re being heard.

A lot of patience is required for these relationships, as well.”

Being actively aware of friends with mental illnesses can mean caring for them in many different ways, including making sure they are eating, sleeping and not hurting them-

selves. Strive to be a support system to them even when it can become exhausting.

Dr. Natalie Rios, assistant director of the California Baptist University Counseling Center, said friends have a major role in helping those with mental illnesses and are often some of the only pathways to recovery.

“Friends can play a very positive role in the lives of people struggling with mental illness,” Rios said. “They can be an important support system so the person does not feel alone in these struggles.

“Friends can also help someone struggling feel understood and normalized through offering encouragement, compassion and a willingness to listen.

Also, creating an open conversation about personal struggles and mental illness can help reduce stigma, which in turn can increase a person’s willingness to seek out professional support.”

Struggling with a mental illness can be a paralyzing thing.

Sometimes the only reason people suffering choose to keep fighting are those reminders from friends and loved ones that they are remembered, valued and appreciated by them.

Spiritual, educational aspects at CBU heavily influenced students

ASST. LIFESTYLE EDITOR Picking the right college can be daunting, yet numerous college students evaluated their wants and needs time and time again, leading them to enroll at California Baptist University.

Some students are influenced by mere adaptability when leaving their homes and uprooting their lives internationally.

Olawumi Omofomah, graduate student in leadership and organizational studies, said as a follower of Christ, CBU’s motto resonated with her purpose in life while looking for a comfortable and more affordable place to acclimate her new lifestyle.

“My family and I received the good news and it was divine intervention because that’s when my home country, Nigeria, was going through an economic crisis,” Omofomah said.

“I was told about the opportunity to apply for the global initiative grants for international students and with the support of the grant, I was able to pay for the tuition fees.”

CBU offers a multitude of grants and scholarships that

aid a diverse number of students with educational and living costs.

Other major aspects that weigh in when applying for college are the situations in one’s life. CBU has an acceptance rate of 77 percent, which aids students in beginning a new life with endless spiritual and educational opportunities.

“I am reminded every day that I have made the right decision to attend school at CBU because the faculty members alone inspire me to challenge myself.”

Dustin Lowe, director of undergraduate admissions, said searching for the right college is crucial and students are heavily persuaded by the cost, location and a sense of connection with the campus community.

“A couple of the most important pieces to encourage a student to inquire or apply to a college are the academic programs that are offered,” Lowe said. “College is a huge investment, not only financially, but in time that is spent preparing people to find and live out their purpose.”

CBU has offered students opportunities to pursue their faith or find a sense of belonging, while others were given a second chance to succeed. No matter the circumstance, CBU has brought together a diverse group of students who have experienced various paths of life.

“The Horror Vault was one of my favorite spots and it’s right next to the Wave of Books, which is a great place to get pictures,” Cooke said.

These famous photo spots are all on the second floor of the bookstore and constantly have visitors lining up to get their postable picture before someone else gets in the way.

The stacks are curved over a ramp leading to a new room and are made of hundreds of books lit up by LED lights, making it a good stop for any book lover.

There is also a shelf on the second floor of books organized by color, creating a rainbow wall that many visitors take a picture in front of.

The store also features studio stores from multiple local artists and companies, such as FOLD Gallery. At FOLD, they specialize in vintage cameras, typewriters and other collectable items from different eras.

They also carry stationery, small gifts and other local merchandise from Los Angeles artists and companies.

Jena Priebe, owner of FOLD Gallery, said her store aims to show a community in their close quarters with the Last Bookstore and other artists.

“When first opening our store, we knew that we were part of a bigger community of artists and, of course, the Last Bookstore. It creates a deep sense of community. We are grateful to share the space with our artist neighbors and The

dors who sell completely different things, it has a large number of records, and has insanely low prices, which is great for a college wallet,” Gillespie said.

Although the store works as a great location for a photo shoot as well as a bookstore,

there is a plaque that reads: “This is a book shop. No mere playground nor background for selfies. A crossroads of civilization. Refuge of all the arts, against the ravages of time. Armory of fearless truth, against whispering rumor. Incessant

Lifestyle Tries: Electric neon sign

Neon signs can be a fun and edgy addition to spice up a boring dorm room, but they often reside in the expensive category of room décor with costs ranging anywhere from $60 to $140.

Lucky for you, the same thing can be created at home for way less and do not worry, it does not require complex electrician knowledge or glass blowing skills as one may think. With all supplies included, this neon sign will cost approximately $26 to make.

For this project, you will need up to nine feet of electroluminescent (EL) wire, which can be found on Amazon in a variety of different colors. EL wire is the most important component as it will act as the light source for the neon sign.

Other necessary supplies include multipurpose wire from any hardware store, pliers, wire cutters, super glue for plastics, AA batteries, string of any kind, clear push pins, a large piece of paper and a pencil.

Just follow these simple steps and you can have an electric neon sign of your own: • Step One: Take a large piece of paper and sketch out the words you would like the sign to display. This will need to be done in cursive in order to ensure the letters connect.

• Step Two: Use some string to measure out how much multipurpose wire will be needed to fit the words on the paper.

• Step Three: Line the string up to the wire and use the wire cutters to cut it to match the exact length.

• Step Four: Take the multipurpose wire and mold it on top of the words to replicate the design. Use the pliers to tighten tough corners. This step can be tedious, but it does not have to be perfect. The EL wire will mold much easier over the multipurpose wire and can disguise rough edges.

• Step Five: Use the super glue to bind the EL wire to the multipurpose wire, stopping every few inches to make sure the glue has dried and the wire stays in place.

• Step Six: (optional) Wrap white tape around the remaining portion of EL wire

to help it blend into the wall.

Once the letters have been fully covered and the glue has dried, it is ready to be hung up on the wall. Use the clear push pins to hang and securely position the sign.

This will help give the illusion of the neon sign floating.

AA batteries are needed to operate the EL wire. Simply light up the neon sign by using the on/off switch located on the battery box.

If the sign is going to be placed on a vacant wall, you may want to use tape to attach the battery box to the wall so it does not weigh down or bend the newly completed neon sign.

In all, this creative DIY project should take no more than two and a half hours to complete. It may take some patience at first, but the end result will make it all worth it.

This would be the perfect addition to a dorm room, with endless possibilities to customize the words and colors to reflect the creator’s own individual style and personality.

It is best suitable for people with combination or oily skin types. Those with dry skin could get away with wearing this with a moisturizer underneath but may experience dryness in certain areas throughout the day.

The foundation does oxidize or turn a little darker on the skin after application, but nothing too noticeable. However, this should be kept in mind when shade-matching in store.

In addition, Fenty Beauty recently released the Pro Filtr concealer with an additional 50 shades to go along with the foundation. The Pro Filtr concealer costs $26 and claims to have medium to full coverage, be crease-proof and long-wearing.

The concealer’s coverage is certainly buildable and long-wearing. A little product goes a long way and upon trying the concealer myself, the coverage lasted around 10 hours after application. Everyone’s skin type is different and these products may vary in results or perform differently depending on the person.

Both of these products felt considerably lightweight on the skin. However, the foundation leaves a matte finish and can be drying for those with dry skin like me. I prefer a luminous finish in comparison.

I appreciate the wide range of shades offered in this launch because it made it super-easy to find the right shade match. This is a huge step in the right direction for inclusivity within the beauty industry.

Athletes improve their mental performance

It is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. Research shows that most athletes agree the mental aspect of the game is greater than the physical.

At California Baptist University, most teams are working to better understand and improve on the mental challenges with the help of Dr. Ed Garrett, certified mental performance consultant, more commonly known by athletes as “Dr. G.” Garrett said he began working with the teams two years ago after the Lord called him to CBU. Garrett said he likes to call himself, in simpler terms, a mental performance and enhancement coach.

Rolling up his sleeves to display his faith-centered tattoos and wearing a cross piece around his neck, Garrett lit up when speaking about his faith.

“The one thing I like about working at CBU is I get to share the gospel and I seek such great joy helping athletes every day,” Garrett said.

Jerome Heidrich, graduate student in sport and performance psychology, was mentored by Garrett during his first semester in the master’s program.

“Dr. G fits really well with CBU,” Heidrich said. “He’s a strong, spiritual, faithful character. He’s really good at building a trusting relationship.”

Garrett works with the master’s degree in sports and performance psychology. He said he is passionate about mentoring graduate students through the educational process and having students observe his group sessions.

During the sessions, three to five graduate students observe Garrett, they are able to step in and work with the teams.

Baseball, softball take on UCR in latest showdown

BY CULLEN HOLT SPORTS EDITOR The Crosstown Showdown — the new, all-Division I edition of the rivalry between California Baptist University and the University of California, Riverside – started strong when the Lancers claimed a 3-2 victory in volleyball in October 2019.

Since then, both Lancer basketball teams defeated the Highlanders and CBU men’s soccer narrowly dropped a thrilling overtime match. Now in the spring season, the rivalry has transitioned to the baseball and softball diamonds.

Lancer baseball took on UCR, March 1, with a road game and, March 3, in a home-away doubleheader. CBU entered the three-game series as an undefeated team.

In the series opener March 1, the Highlanders used a fiverun fifth inning to sneak past CBU 8-3. The doubleheader on March 3, however, was much closer. CBU rallied in Game One, but came up just short, falling 5-4. In the nightcap, the Lancers once again used a late rally to put pressure on UCR, but ultimately fell 7-4.

Despite the result, Gary Adcock, head coach of base-

ball, said the series was a great chance for the team to be tested early in its DI years. The second-largest crowd in program history showed up for the series finale.

“It’s a big event for Riverside,” Adcock said. “The tradition out of (UCR) and the baseball program is phenomenal and we are trying to create what they have. They have the tradition and history we’re searching for.”

Meanwhile, on the softball diamond, CBU played two games at the UC Riverside Classic. The Lancers shut out the University of Texas at El Paso and were narrowly edged by Sacramento State University.

CBU softball was originally scheduled to face UC Riverside on, March 3, but weather complications mean the Lancers will have to wait until April 10 for their shot at the crosstown rival.

Anise Avalos, senior psychology major and shortstop, said the team is looking forward to facing the Highlanders at home.

“We’re so excited to play UCR. Not only will it be great competition, but this game will bring the community together,” Avalos said. “Playing another

Jordan Arrington, graduate student of the sport and performance psychology program, has also been mentored by Garrett.

“We’ll walk around, talk to the athletes, get what they’re feeling from the session,” Arrington said. “We’ll break off and talk about different topics, such as goal-setting and imagery.”

In team-based segments, Garrett administers cognitive tools and team-building activities in which athletes learn how to apply the tools.

“I’m very much of an applied practitioner, but at the same time I like educating from the holistic standpoint,” Garrett said. “Though I may be talking about athletics, I tie it into how it affects their life.”

Garrett said the group sessions are a team effort. He and his students uncover how athletes communicate to themselves. He gives the example of when a softball player is walking up to the on-deck circle and a certain trigger occurs that causes her to doubt herself before getting to home plate.

Garrett has conversations with athletes about their fears before playing. He talks to them about their doubts to determine how to reduce their anxieties before games. For example, a baseball player may be anxious about his first at bat.

Garrett said when he shares these scenarios with his master’s students, they begin to paint a picture and come up with solutions to create positive thinking for the athletes.

“It’s all about behavioral change, confidence enhancement,” Garrett said. “If that athlete walks off the field, win or lose, and feels good about their experience, then they’re going to want to come back tomorrow and compete.”

Athletes seek Garrett’s wisdom for the mental part of the game, but leave with lessons they can apply to their every day lives. “And that’s why I love what I do,” Garret said.

After a 9-0 start for baseball and a statement win over Fresno State University for softball, the Lancers have started conversations well outside of Riverside. CBU baseball was even featured in Baseball America Magazine.

tention. We understand that you can get the attention at one point then it can all come crashing down,” Adcock said.

“We’re not resting on our past successes — we’re looking forward to the future ones that we have.”

The Crosstown Showdown will wrap up on April 10 at the John C. Funk Stadium, as the Lancers look to go out on top in Riverside.

CBU baseball comes off the Crosstown Showdown series with the University of California, Riverside, to host a four-game stint with the University of the Pacific, March 7-10.

Brüders Coffee gives back to the community

ASST. BUSINESS AND TECH EDITOR Coffee. A little bit of heart and a lot of hope in Jesus Christ.

These are the essential ingredients that brothers Danny and Bobby Perde, senior applied theology major at California Baptist University, use in every cup of coffee they make at Brüders — their Yucaipa-based coffee company.

For Danny and Bobby Perde, coffee began as a morning ritual to help them wake up, but they knew they had to start roasting and brewing their own coffee after tasting coffee at Augie’s Coffee Co. in Redlands, Calif. After roasting and brewing their own coffee, they said they felt they wanted to start a coffee business but did not know where to start.

One late night, the Perde brothers were chatting about an enormous lottery that was being advertised as having a prize of nearly $1 billion.

The Perde brothers bounced ideas around for a business name, but it was Bobby Perde who came up with Brüders.

Despite not winning the lottery, the Perdes were still motivated to make their dreams come true, and thus, Brüders was born. Brüders started roasting coffee to sell.

The brothers had a dream of converting a Volkswagen

Bus into a mobile coffee station. They wanted to help people who picked coffee beans in South America by establishing housing and clean water for them with money made from selling coffee. It was a dreambig, make-it-happen plan, but their plans came to a standstill in July 2014 when Danny Perde’s son, Jude, was born.

“The doctor came up to me and said, ‘I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that he might not make it past 24 hours. The good news is that we have medicine we can give him that will keep him going for a couple of months until he’s able to undergo surgery,’” Danny Perde said.

Jude was born with hypo-plastic right heart syndrome, which results in the underdevelopment of the right atrium and ventricle of the heart.

Now, Jude is a happy and healthy 5-year-old. But from his birth came a new reason for Brüders to help those closer to them.

“Jude is the impetus behind Brüders. His story helped me realize how fragile life is,” Bobby Perde said. “After he was born, we as a family realized other people in the Inland Empire needed help just as much as we did.”

So with a new appreciation on life, the brothers resorted to

Since 2016, Brüders serves local churches, such as Citizens Church in Redlands, caters weddings and continues to

donate 10 percent of its profits to organizations that help children in need.

“I have learned that Brüders is a vessel, a vessel for spreading our message, and that message

Media consumption can Apple emojis represent the disabled affect psychological intake

ASST. BUSINESS AND TECH EDITOR Ideas influence thought and society’s direction, but do the way people consume ideas affect the way they process them?

The medium that is used to convey a message affects the way it is received. However, all mediums have their place and can be used in constructive ways to convey information.

Philosopher and media theorist Marshal McLuhan coined the expression, “the medium is the message.” What McLuhan meant by that is that the message one conveys is fundamentally different depending on which medium is used. For example, we have an idea being conveyed in book and website.

A book is linear in nature and all will experience the same written information in the same

way. A website with tabs can convey much more diversity in how information is displayed.

Someone can go to any tab or link within a web page and can absorb the information in a random fashion. Film, on the other hand, is observed linearly.

This idea is supported by a University of California, Berkley, study called the “Humanizing’ Voice,” which found that people respond better to opinions that are different from their own when they are heard rather than when they are read.

This is because they are reminded that there is a real human relaying opinions, whereas it is easier to disconnect with the author of written text.

The medium itself can say a lot about view and change views just as much as the content.

When it comes to learning, Kourtney Rocky, master

of science major with a PPS in school counseling, said different learning styles need different mediums.

“As far as perception goes, it depends on your learning style.

You have people who learn audibly, you have people who learn visually ... I don’t think one is better,” Rocky said.

Dr. Erin Smith, associate professor of psychology, said books and digital media can be beneficial.

“It really depends on how you use them ... I don’t think there is an inherent advantage of books over digital media, but with digital media it is harder to avoid the pitfalls of distraction,” Smith said.

The current evidence conveys that while information is perceived differently based upon medium, all forms of media have value.

Saying exactly what needs to be said can be difficult when communicating through text messages. Many people use emojis for the moments that words cannot describe what needs to be said.

The Unicode Consortium expects to release 230 new emojis for Apple users as early as September 2019, many of which are intended to accommodate or raise awareness for those with disabilities.

Of the 230 new emojis offered in Unicode Emoji 12.0 are prosthetic arms, legs, emojis in wheelchairs, guide dogs, an ear with a hearing aid, and even an emoji signing the word “deaf” in American Sign Language.

According to Dr. Daniel Blair, assistant professor of ASL and director for the Center of Deaf Studies at California Baptist University, the link between emojis and ASL is ex-

tremely close.

“It’s visual, it’s symbols, it’s really sign language — all the emojis,” Blair said.

With these emojis using signs from ASL, such as the “deaf person” emoji, that depicts an emoji signing the word deaf, Blair was curious as to how the deaf community would react to these emojis.

To see how the deaf community would react to these emojis, they would need to be asked their opinion, or as Blair said, “Your real litmus test is going to be from the deaf community.”

At the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, people are generally welcoming of the update.

Pearlene Utley, secretary at CSDR, said she is excited about the new emojis.

“The more visibility (the deaf community) gets, the more awareness,” Utley said.

Others, including Martha Harrision, an office technician at CSDR, raised some doubts

about the acceptance of the emojis by the deaf community.

“It’s a great idea, but keep in mind, not all (in the deaf community) are supportive of hearing aids and cochlear implants,” Harrison said, “but the emojis that show deafness will be well-received by the deaf community.”

These new emojis are not the only emojis the deaf community has been using either.

Since the release of the Unicode version 10.0 in 2017, deaf people have been using emojis, such as the “love-you gesture” and the “victory hand.”

The love-you gesture depicts the sign for love in ASL and the victory hand emoji depicts the letter V in ASL as well.

Only the future will tell how the deaf community uses and respond to the new emojis.

For users to suggest future emojis, The Unicode Consortium supplies a proposal form on its website at Unicode.org/ emoji/proposals.html.

ASST. BUSINESS AND TECH EDITOR Technology and science industries have long been dominated by men. Men such as Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk have had major accomplishments within areas of science and technology, but one woman wants to see the scales balanced. Her name is Maria Klawe.

Klawe is a well-known computer scientist, former head of the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University, board member for non-profit Math for America, chair of the board for non-profit EdReports. org and is the first woman to be elected president of Harvey Mudd College since its founding in 1955.

In trying to balance the amount of men and women working in technology and science, Klawe has learned two things that can interest women in these areas, one of them being student outreach.

In an outreach program with schools across the country, stu-

dents majoring in technology and science visited high schools to give 15- to 20-minute speeches to students about science and technology fields. Klawe said that California State Polytechnic University, Pomona still practices this outreach.

Klawe said she fears that two benefits of working in technology and science-related jobs — salary and job flexibility — may go unknown to students outside of this reach.

“They are careers that pay well, they offer opportunities to make significant contributions to society (and) they also tend to be flexible in terms of letting someone work from home,” Klawe said.

The second benefit of working in these fields is that it allows its practitioners stability to start a family.

“Given that many people want to have an ambitious career and combine that with having a long-term relationship with someone and possibly having children, as well, having one or both people in a tech career tends to make that a lot easier,”

Klawe said.

Abby Shornick and Sarah Gillen, junior biomedical engineering majors at California Baptist University, said they believe women should not be at an disadvantage from the beginning of their careers.

“You would hate to start a job and already be at a disadvantage and have to prove yourself right away,” Shornick said. “It would be nice for people to respect you as much as a man who started with the same position.”

Both Shornick and Gillen expressed hope that they and future women will not have to experience discouragement from others as more women join the science and technology fields.

“If you’re interested in science or technology, you shouldn’t feel that you can’t be because you’re going to be put down,” Gillen said.

Klawe plans to launch a new program in 2020 called Bridge to Data Science and Computer Science to enable professors with doctorates not finding jobs in their fields to teach computer science classes.

New Google Chrome extension Camera company helps users learn new languages changes game for filmmakers

There are no shortcuts to learning a new language, which is why it can be a tough feat, but a new Google Chrome plug-in is looking to simplify the language-learning experience using Netflix.

Language Learning with Netflix is a Google Chrome extension that allows users to watch Netflix with dual subtitles.

To begin, users select their native language and then their desired learning language. Users are then prompted to select their level of understanding of their desired language, which are based on the number of words known.

Being able to improve language skill while watching favorite foreign shows, such as the Spanish Netflix hit “Narcos” (2015 – 2017) or German mystery thriller “Dark” (2017 – current), can make language learning not only easy, but entertaining as well.

Linda Ordonez, adjunct professor of modern languages and literature, sees the LLN plug-in as a useful tool and would recommend it to her own Spanish students.

“I would even use it myself because I like to watch the Spanish shows. A lot of the time I have to rewatch it like twice just to understand what they are saying. Some-

times I have to pause it and then look at the subtitles, especially when it’s Spanish from other parts of the world,” Ordonez said.

One feature of LLN is its automatic pause. As the subtitles are presented, there is an option to toggle an automated pause that allows time to read in both languages.

While paused, words are highlighted based on the users selected level of understanding. Users can select the highlighted words to get a definition.

As far as language acquisition and retention are concerned, Ambar Hurtado, University of California, Riverside, linguistic graduate and lecturer at California State University, San Bernardino, said she believes LLN can be helpful with language retention. However, Hurtado suggests users should not be completely dependent on the extension for language acquisition.

“Technology is always a great way to get started with a new language, but we need social contexts to practice language to really help bring it all together,” Hurtado said.

“In order to adapt to social contexts and the fluidity of conversation, we need to practice it in live contexts as well. Technology can do wonders to help us understand grammatical features and patterns in new ways.”

While LLN does not claim to teach users a new language fully, it does state that it will

help. Hurtado, said she believes the best usage of the extension would be to watch in an unscripted fashion and authenticity is the best way to receive the full benefits of LLN. “The claim that scripted entertainment is authentic conversation remains controversial. This app would probably be most helpful when used with documentaries or reality shows because this is as close as we get to authentic, unscripted conversation in filmed entertainment.”

Madilyn Moritz, graphic design major, has taken two semesters of Mandarin courses but is also an avid anime watcher.

Although Moritz studied Mandarin, she has always been fascinated with Japanese culture and said she believes she could use the app to help understand the language more.

“I definitely could see this being useful.

Not only because of anime but also because I think (Japan) is such a cool country, a place that I’ve always been interested in, the culture and visiting some day. Learning the language could be really enriching and a cool skill to have,” Moritz said.

Memes change marketing tactics

ASST. BUSINESS AND TECH EDITOR Memes may be great for laughs but they can also be great for marketing, too.

A meme is “a unit of cultural information ... that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action...”, according to the Free Dictionary by Farlex.

As it applies today, memes typically come in the form of videos or images shared on social media. Organizations can either use existing memes in their marketing or become a meme themselves, which can be dangerous because they can lose control of the message.

The administrator of a wellknown meme account, @cbumemedudes, said well-done meme marketing is less annoying than regular advertising.

“I think (using memes) is creative, and a good ad can be enjoyable but a lot of ads don’t look to be that. They are just annoying,” the admin said.

Chad Gaines, junior accounting major, said he thinks memes can make better advertisements than traditional methods of advertising.

“They are really entertaining and get your attention better than a boring advertisement,” Gaines said.

Dr. Natalie Winter, professor of marketing and management, says memes have become popular in marketing as more people with purchasing power become familiar with the intricate world of memes.

“It has definitely gained popularity in the last few years thanks to the rise of social media. As you have more decisionmakers in terms of purchasing, such as moms being on social

media, the use of memes is going to increase,” Winter said.

The Netflix original “Birdbox” (2018) recently gained publicity from successful meme marketing. Images from the film were used as memes and brought a great deal of awareness to the film. It became the most-watched film in Netflix history despite using less expensive promotions than Netflix’s previous most watched film, “Bright” (2017). Meme promotions likely contributed to “Birdbox” becoming the most-streamed film.

Memes can have negative effects, however. When United Airlines forcibly removed a passenger from one of its flights in 2017, it became a public relations nightmare. The organization was heavily memed for its treatment of the passenger.

This can be detrimental because a meme conveys an oversimplified message. If people see a meme repeatedly bad-mouthing an organization, the message will likely affect their perception of the organization. Winter says it is important to keep brand-image positive in memes.

“They do not want a negative response to become the story, so they have to think through that strategically while staying true to the brand-image. They also want to leverage the opportunity and not have that tide turn on them because their response seems humorless or out of touch,” Winter said.

Memes and social media are here to stay, and as long as they are here, marketers will seek to maximize their potential and will be on the lookout for when their organization becomes the next viral meme.

Blackmagic releases new camera made for cinema

BUSINESS AND TECH EDITOR For independent filmmakers, it can be difficult to find an in-budget cinematic camera that can compete with studio standard cameras, such as Arri and RED. Blackmagic puts that power in filmmakers hands.

Blackmagic released its first cinema camera in 2012. The company released the Pocket Cinema Camera in September 2018. Blackmagic’s new camera has a 4/3 size sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO up to 25,600, which gives it crisp quality and great lowlight performance. For $1,295, the Pocket Cinema Camera is a low-priced option for independent filmmakers.

California Baptist University student Allen Fletcher, junior film studies major, has used Blackmagic cameras available on campus for film students to rent short-term.

Fletcher said he values the quality of the equipment he is buying and does not pay much attention to competing brands.

“It’s a good option because cost-wise it saves you so much money and gives you the same professional look that you can get with a RED camera,” Fletcher said. “If you’re an independent filmmaker, it is a

really good option.”

While Fletcher stands with Blackmagic, Kellen Lowe, graduate film student from the University of California, Riverside, said he believes the film community is split on them, but says that post-production can make a big difference.

“Blackmagic cameras are polarizing. My friend swears by his because it’s cost -effective and with enough good postwork it can look as good as anything else,” Lowe said.

RED and Arri are both standard movie production-quality cameras; however, they are much more expensive than Blackmagic’s new camera.

Professor Michael Eaton, professor of film, said he believes what truly makes a film great is storytelling.

“In general, the lower cost 4K cameras, such as the Pocket Cinema camera and the 5D Mark 4, are good options for filmmakers. One of my students is filming with the Panasonic Lumix G5, which is also making beautiful images,” Eaton said.

“Many of the cameras today, including the lower-cost 4K cameras, are so much better than earlier versions of digital cinematography cameras that many of them can be used to make beautiful movies, mainly because compelling cinema has less to do with the equipment than with quality storytelling that engages the hearts and minds of our audiences with emotionally resonant content.”

McGovern is mostly selftaught in a variety of creative fields and said he is often influenced by content on YouTube.

“I took a couple of classes for film and photography along the way, but most of what I learned was through tutorials online and going out and trying different techniques to see how it worked,” McGovern said.

Michael Eaton, professor of film studies and film production, has taught McGovern in several of his classes.

“His work is always well-shot and interesting to look at. He has always incorporated drone shots and competent camera movement into all the video that I’ve seen him do,” Eaton said.

McGovern said he looks toward creative outlets because his “hands hate sitting still.”

“I like everything computers, cameras and cars. I enjoy building things, taking things apart and putting them back together.

I really like to just mess around with all sorts of things,” McGov-

Driscoll said giving young people a place to come together and enjoy art and music is the greatest motivator for the production team.

“We’re not promoting for people to come out and party.

We’re really trying to create a community around these shows and give people a place to come together,” Driscoll said. “To me that should be our mission statement and what we believe.”

“We want to create a safe space for believers and non-believers to come together and enjoy music. I believe God can use that to create a culture that is not the norm. By listening to music and being able to have a good time, I believe that’s the way we’re going to be able to show love to others and potentially present the gospel,”

On what otherwise seemed to be a normal day for commuters, a Lamborghini Aventador, Mercedes AMG GT-R, Viper and Corvette whisked ahead of them.

Meanwhile, McGovern snapped pictures of the cars racing by at high speeds.

This event, known to automobile enthusiasts as a “freeway takeover,” occurred before the monthly “Cars and Coffee” meet-up at the parking lot of the local mall.

This was just a typical weekend for McGovern, who often attends hot rod, muscle car and vintage car meet-ups and is sometimes paid to create professional videos and photos for events.

“I’ve been doing photography and film pretty much as long as I can remember. One of the clearest memories I have is when I

Kevin You, junior business administration major, met McGovern in a microeconomics class and the pair later became friends after he tagged along with McGovern to car meets.

He said he highly recommends working with McGovern.

“Working with Tim creatively is an awesome opportunity. Tim made this promotional video for our car club here on campus and it looked like it was shot and edited by a pro,” You said.

McGovern was instantly captivated by car meet-ups the first time he went to an event.

“I was just so in awe of all the creativity, expression and the amount of fun everyone was

“There were about five indie bands playing for about two and half hours. Overall, it was a great event and I enjoyed it,” Hickman said.

Caroline Thoennes, freshman vocal performance major, attended the house concert because she saw a post about it on social media, as well.

“The lineup was great. The bands were current CBU students or former Lancers and they also had a special guest perform. I would definitely go again,” Thoennes said.

These house shows are created by talented individuals who share a passion for music and want to provide a good time with all kinds of people whether they are believers or non-believers.

McGovern said he loves to combine his passion for cars and his passion for filmmaking and creative content.

“Cars and photo and video collided almost immediately for me. At the second car event I ever went to I grabbed my camera and said, “Hey, let me film whatever catches my eye,’” McGovern said.

This semester, McGovern continues to work on several different creative projects.

“I’m currently working on a documentary called ‘Lifestyle’ about being a part of the car community. Otherwise, I’m doing shoots here and there and working on improving my own project car,” McGovern said.

It is not surprising that this generation relies on social media for news. However, what young people do not realize is that this rise in reliance on social media results in a decline of media outlets.

Media outlets, such as Verizon and the many media companies they own such as Yahoo, announced that they have cut a percentage of their staff, specifically writers and photographers who specialize in topics such as sports, news and international news.

There has been a decline in newspapers over the years, but it was not until 2018 when layoffs were at their highest since 2009. In January, Vice Media announced it would cut 10 percent of its staff, while the Verizon companies cut 7 percent from its media team.

Dr. Natalie Winter, professor of marketing and management, said to bypass this issue, all media companies need to consider how the public likes to get its news and cater to them specifically.

“There is a ton of content being generated daily,” Winter said. “Sites need to figure out how to optimize the money that they spend to generate this content. Media companies need to develop original, engaging content and provide that content in a way that younger audiences will respond to, such as shorter articles and more visuals. Media companies have to learn how to respond to these changing dynamics if they want to experience ongoing success.”

Media outlets get most of their funding from advertisements, thus, because readers are starting to rely on social media sites for news, news outlets’ revenues are decreasing.

Karina Jimenez, senior Spanish major, said since she is pursuing a career in media, she is aware of the layoffs and is not surprised by it. “(Everyone in) this generation has at least one sort of social media platform. With technology evolving, it’s easier for us to find news a click away. The more social media becomes prominent, I do think there may be more people being laid off in upcoming years,” Jimenez said.

Brittaney Perkins, senior nursing major, said media outlets should try to embrace the rise in social media use to connect more with readers.

“When I am on campus during the week and can’t watch television news, I go to Facebook to get caught up on the latest. If they have not already, media outlets can create news apps to stay relevant,” Perkins said.

As social media advances, it can be detrimental to the future of media if outlets do not advance, too. Layoffs have been happening gradually over the years, so it is uncertain whether they will stop soon. The decisions media outlets make now will affect their future, so potential professionals and viewers will have to see what the future holds.

Abuse allegations Dickens Festival delights resurface in ‘King of Pop’ film series

ASST. A&E EDITOR Despite legal threats from Michael Jackson’s team, HBO released a two-part documentary March 3–4 that follows the two men who allege Michael Jackson sexually abused them as children. The film first premiered in January 2019 at the Sundance Film Festival.

Jackson has long been accused of sexually abusing children, but in each case all charges were dismissed. Throughout a 10-year investigation, the FBI was unable to find incriminating evidence before his death in 2009.

The documentary, “Leaving Neverland” (2019), features James Safechuck and Wade Robson, who publicly asserted that Jackson assaulted them for years, starting at the ages of 7 and 10, respectively.

Both men previously supported the “King of Pop” in a 2005 molestation trial in which they denied allegations of abuse. Both now say they were not truthful in court.

Dr. Veola Vasquez, psychology professor, said abuse has a more severe psychological impact on children who have experienced ongoing abuse for several years.

“They can develop depression.

Anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder are very common. It just affects the whole person,” Vasquez said.

The Michael Jackson estate has released a 10-page letter to HBO’s CEO criticizing the film, denying allegations and condemning the director for not speaking with Jackson’s family or legal team.

Their statement reads, “We are furious that the media, who without a shred of proof, chose to believe the word of two admitted liars over the word of hundreds of families and

friends who spent time with Michael, many at Neverland Ranch, and experienced his legendary kindness and global generosity.”

Kimberly Gledhill, senior sociology major, said what she remembered most about Jackson was his iconic musicianship and sudden and unexpected death.

“I haven’t seen much in the media regarding the abuse allegations, but I remember the day he died because everyone remembers the day he died,” Gledhill said.

Gledhill has been studying trauma in children and worked at a summer camp where she was trained to recognize the signs of sexual abuse in children.

“What needs to start happening (to fight) child abuse is more education. A lot of people don’t know the signs and it’s not commonly known what to do about it,” Gledhill said.

Gledhill said she hopes this movie will spark more discussion regarding abuse.

“This generation, finally, is starting to talk about hard things like the reality of child abuse. Our parents’ generation was very much (of the thinking) that we don’t talk about things that are hard,” Gledhill said.

Despite the outrage of friends and fans of Jackson in response to the allegations in “Leaving Neverland,” no one can deny the film’s emotional retelling of events was disturbing.

One Rotten Tomatoes critic wrote, “Exhaustive, exhausting, enraging, it truly feels like the definitive answer to whether singer Michael Jackson sexually abused at least two of the young boys he befriended during his career.”

Many are divided over the release of the new documentary, which may or may not contain truthful information.

The 26th annual Dickens Festival was held in downtown Riverside Feb. 23–24 to honor the impact Charles Dickens had upon Victorian-era London.

At the Dickens Festival, people get together to celebrate by dressing up in Victorian-era costumes and reliving the century.

Actors were spotted dressed as historical figures ,such as Charles Dickens, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Jane Austen and Oscar Wilde.

These actors interacted with regular Riverside residents as if they really were the people they were portraying, reading the greatest works of the historical figure they were re-enacting.

Lillie Olger, a vendor, has worked at the Dickens Festival for many years.

“I’ve been doing it for 25 years and I love it,” Olger said. “I sell Victorian-era, which starts from the Civil War and early 1900s.”

Ken Stansberg, an actor, portrayed Mark Twain and said he has been in the Dickens Festival for nine years.

“This (happens) because people like literature and books. Real books. That era produced the greatest authors,” Stansberg said.

Vendors sold items that would not be sold anywhere other than at events such as the Dickens Festival, including clothing, traditional foods and accessories from the Victorian era.

These booths also included petting zoos with animals that were popular back in that era as well as traditional foods. Activities were divided into categories such as Tea Corner, Hyde Park Cor-

In Tea Corner, the public could “meet” authors and inventors from the Victorian era, including Mark Twain, Mary Shelley and Thomas Edison. The Hyde Park Corner was for debates and recitations. Other special events included the Grand Parade and a fashion show.

Although this festival was free to the public, certain extra events required special tickets. For a small fee, attendees could join in activities such as “Escape Mr. Creakle’s Boarding House,” which was a Victorian-themed escape room, or “Fezziwig’s Grand Victorian

Ball,” which included activities like dancing and important displays.

Caroline Thoennes, freshman music performance major, attended the Dickens Festival to learn and explore the Victorian era.

“I was there because I thought it would be interesting to see actors dressed in Victorian-era costumes.

Each one was unique, some through color-mixing, while others through fabric design,” Thoennes said.

She said she also enjoyed the vendors because the workers were informed about the items they sold.

“The buyers would ask about the items and the seller would give a little history on the importance or its pur-

pose during the time period,” Thoennes said.

Jessica Gregory, an actor at the Dickens Festival, said her role was to be a peasant animal keeper at the Moonlight Petting Zoo. “Dickens festival is definitely something unique, something you don’t see every day,” Gregory said.

She said she usually participates in Renaissance festivals but this was her first year with the Dickens Festival.

The Dickens Festival celebrates the life of an extraordinary writer from the Victorian era, Charles Dickens.

Riverside hosts this event every year to emphasize the impact the Victorian era made in literature.

Silent film festival raises funds

The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa began the month of March by playing host to the annual Silent Film Fundraiser to help the historic establishment raise money.

The organizers of the event, Friends of the Mission Inn, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help recover, repair and restore the Mission Inn itself. The group has been hosting the film fundraiser since 2007 after the Mission Inn’s famous Kimball Pipe Organ was restored.

Sharla Wright, president of Friends of the Mission Inn, said the Mission Inn’s Kimball Pipe Organ plays a major role in this fundraiser and the organization uses the money to fund more preserving projects.

“We needed a fundraiser

and a major reason we have this event is because of the organ.

We were looking for an event that featured it and that is why we chose these silent movies,” Wright said.

“We have probably raised more than $5000 in previous years so whatever money we get from this fundraiser we use to restore more of the artifacts,” Wright said.

The silent film shown was “My Best Girl” (1927), starring renowned film actors Mary Pickford and Buddy Rogers.

Another highlight of the fundraiser was Mark Herman, an organist known for being an accomplished silent-film scorer, who accompanied the film by playing the music score on the Kimball pipe organ.

Language, said silent films changed cinema for how they were shot and acted.

“When we started making movies, they were silent. It equalized the opportunity for deaf people and hearing people alike because we were all just watching, and we understand the actions,” Blair said of the early films. “From a historic perspective, if you are into film, it is interesting how they shot the films. It is different (in) the way your actors are positioned.

If it is silent every action has meaning.”

The creation of silent films started in the late 1800s. They were popular with both the hearing and deaf communities.

It was not until the film industry started to make films with sound that films started captioning for the deaf community

to help them better understand the premise of films.

Angelia Carrera, senior communication studies major, works as an ASL interpreter and said silent films were monumental to the deaf community.

“Something we can all learn and appreciate about silent films is the use of captioning.

Technology has progressed to where we can have audio-visual experiences in film, but why has captioning stopped? Deaf people have to search for specific times when movies are shown with captioning if they want to attend,” Carrera said.

The fundraiser was held on March 2. This Mission Inn fundraiser is held annually so people have a chance to help preserve this Riverside landmark while also falling in love with silent films.

Streaming users were shocked mid-February when Netflix Netflix announced that its shows “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” (2015-2018) and “Marvel’s The Punisher” (2017-2019) will not be renewed by the streaming service. Recently, people have realized that Netflix has been phasing out many Marvel and Disney films and TV shows, leaving them wondering what exactly is going on. The answer: Disney+.

Joel Bigley, assistant professor of business at California Baptist University, said he believes there is a movement in the entertainment industry for companies to have their own streaming services rather than having to rely on services such as Netflix and Hulu.

“You’re going to see various content-creators making their own streaming platforms where they will be able to stream directly to consumers. I don’t think the situation with Disney is necessarily unique or a one-off; there is a general move in that direction,” Bigley said.

Natalie Winter, professor of marketing and management, said while she is unsure of a return of Marvel heroes, she does think Disney has a bigger plan in the works.

“Disney is known for strategically leveraging their branded assets. I don’t know

if they will revise those shows specifically,” Winter said, “but I would expect them to leverage all their assets to create a content hub that has great appeal to their fans.”

Erin Gilmore, sophomore liberal arts major and long time fan of all things Disney, said she was not the biggest supporter of the Marvel shows while they were on Netflix, but is upset that she will have to pay for a whole new subscription to the Disney+ streaming service to watch classic Disney shows and movies.

“Disney is such a big part of my childhood and we already pay for (Netflix). If I have to pay for something else to get Disney, that’s not cool,” Gilmore said. “(My siblings and I) always enjoyed Disney movies and I want to share that with my youngest sister. Now that will be harder.”

Winter said this may be a common complaint among consumers, but it will not stop them from using the service.

“Disney has the brand strength to make this work for them because their customers have already demonstrated that they are willing to pay a premium for Disney-branded content,” Winter said.

While no one can be sure about the future of their favorite villains, heroes or princesses, one thing is certain: Disney+ is on its way and will have pressure from fans and critics alike to perform.

Golf steps up DI tourneys

California Baptist University’s men’s and women’s golf teams started their spring season Feb. 11.

With men finishing fourth at The Farms Intercolligiate in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and the women finishing seventh at the Battle of the Rock tournament in Riverside.

“That was probably the best tournament we have had in the Division I era,” said TL Brown, head coach of the men’s golf team. “We could have done better than fourth, but it was nice to see the guys rally back from a poor round and it was nice to see the team hang in there and keep striving to play for one another.”

Sunny Wang, senior business administration major, said the women’s team found room to improve after its first golf tournament.

“We had a really bad first round,” Wang said. “We had high expectations coming into the spring season and this result is not that good. We finished seventh when we wanted to be in the top three.”

However, Marc Machado, head coach of women’s golf, said he is proud of everything the team has accomplished in its first DI year.

“The spring season has started off with a lot of learning experiences. We have learned a lot about ourselves and our mental toughness,” Machado said. “Our mindset is the same as last semester, heading into this spring semester. We are going to do everything we can to put the team first.”

Brown said the men’s team is looking great, but there are improvements that can be made by each golfer to win individually and also benefit the entire Lancers team.

Brown said aside from helping the team, the golfers also want to be in a position to be a champion. He said the key to

the team’s success this season is to improve the mental aspect of the game.

“The teams that are beating us (in The Farms Intercollegiate) probably aren’t more talented than us, but they are just a little stronger emotionally,” Brown said.

Brown said mental preparation is crucial.

“You have to hang in there for 12 hours on the first day and another five hours on the second

day,” Brown said. “Sometimes, it’s more mental than it is physical, not making mistakes and staying in the moment are key.”

If the team can improve that aspect of the game, Brown said the team will grow even more.

The women’s team will head to Utah March 14 and the men will head to San Fransisco March 11 for their next tournaments.

Cullen’s Column: Heading finishes strong for basketball Senior caps off Winter sports wrap four successful up with DI success years for CBU basketball

The winter sports seasons are winding down and hindsight is setting in on what has been a mainly successful first Division I winter for California Baptist University athletics.

For Lancer basketball, it is hard to draw too many conclusions from inconsistently difficult schedules for both the men’s and women’s teams. However, there are a few results that are hard to argue.

For the men, wins range from statement victories over Western Athletic Conference favorite New Mexico State University to blowout dismissals of NCAA Division III schools, such as the University of La Verne and the California Institute of Technology.

However, this transition to DI has included many milestones for CBU. The Lancers, with a current record of 15-13, have accumulated 11 wins over DI opponents.

Since the 1996-97 season, only nine of the 49 basketball programs to make the jump to DI posted at least 10 wins in their first DI season.

Grand Canyon University is the only men’s hoops program to play in a postseason game in its first DI transition year. The Lancers are currently eligible for both the College Basketball Invitational and the Col-

lege Insider Tournament.

Four WAC schools — Utah Valley University, the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley, Grand Canyon University and Seattle University — played in the College Basketball Invitational last season.

On the women’s side, CBU is on a tear in WAC play, winning eight conference matchups in a row. In addition, the Lancers’ 77.7 points per game is 21st in the nation.

CBU was picked to finish eighth in the conference’s preseason poll, but is currently 17-10 and sitting in second place in the WAC standings and outperforming preseason expectations.

Lancer wrestling has had its fair share of success this winter, as well, scoring points against No. 22 Stanford and taking first place at the California Collegiate Open in San Fransisco.

Multiple individual wrestlers impressed in their first DI season. Bryce Buckley, junior accounting major, is 8-7 this season at 174 pounds. Daxton Gordon, senior biology major and Division II national champion, also went 8-7 at 149 pounds.

Growing pains were to be expected this year, but no one could have expected the Lancers would feel this at home in a new competition level.

Guard Jordan Heading, senior kinesiology major, has contributed five years to the California Baptist University’s men’s basketball team.

Over the week of Feb. 4–10, Heading was named Player of the Week of the Western Athletic Conference.

Heading said this was a great recognition, and getting two wins for the week over the University of the Missouri – Kansas City and Chicago State University was a “good time.”

Heading averaged 19.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. He tied his season high against UMKC with 24 points.

Rick Croy, head coach of men’s basketball, said Heading is courageous and improved not only every year, but every season.

“The guy has been unbelievable,” Croy said.

Croy added he admires Heading’s improvement, both as a player and as a leader for the team.

“By the end of last year I thought he was one of the best players in the country in his position at the Division II level,” Croy said. “And look at him again this year — he’s one of the very best guards in the WAC.” Heading said basketball has been a part of his life for as long as he could remember.

Heading said he has developed as both a player and a person while being part of CBU’s basketball team.

“I’ve learned from this coaching staff and from this

program how to apply yourself 100 percent and really go after things day in and day out,” Heading said. “What it really means to compete on and off the floor.”

Thursday, the night before Heading’s senior day, Croy stopped the music at the end of the game, grabbing the mi-

crophone and asked the fans to come out and show their support for Heading and the five years he has contributed at CBU. After college, Heading said he hopes to continue playing basketball as long as he can and is looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Mental illnesses are real health issues

Mental health is not easy for everyone to understand and it is

full of stigmas. Some romanticize and glamorize it with Tumblr-driven ideas, such as “depression is beautiful” or “kiss my scars,” while others regard mental illnesses as weakness.

Both are incredibly harmful and represent two separate sides of the spectrum of treating mental health as a serious topic.

Illnesses such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders and more are real health matters but are often treated differently because they are unnoticeable to the average person. However, mental health should be regard-

Romanticizing mental illness can come with significant consequences. When someone romanticizes a mental illness, he or she is invalidating the pain and side effects that come

with these illnesses. It also can encourage unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as self-harm or self-sabotaging, which can cause the reaction of seeking attention for those acts.

Tumblr has always been an extremely popular platform for those struggling with mental health issues. Some teenagers post about their struggles and use the platform as a place to be vulnerable by posting images of self-harm. Putting this type of behavior on a pedestal gives support to the act of self-harm, further encouraging this negative coping mechanism.

This stigma also presents itself in shows such as “13 Reasons Why.” The Netflix original series attempts to tackle difficult topics, such as depression, suicide, sexual assault, bullying and gun violence.

However, the major fault in the show is the justification, dramatization and glorification of these serious issues. The show is found to be triggering by many viewers, who were victims of these afflictions and even those who were not.

Characters struggling with their mental health are portrayed as weak, defenseless,

hopeless and isolated. The show fails to demonstrate healthy and helpful ways to support someone with a mental illness.

With so many poor demonstrations of the media interacting with mental health, it is important that people do their own research on the topic.

Mental health is a sensitive issue and the symptoms of these illnesses are easily triggered by outside factors.

People struggling with mental heath need a strong support system and it is up to society to stay informed and not add to the stigmas.

Do not rely on possessions for joy

Every day, we make decisions about the lifestyle we want to live. We decide with whom we want to spend time, the things we want to do, and what we choose to buy or own.

American culture encourages people to greatly value material possessions. People

want the biggest houses, the latest trends and the most stuff. However, leaning on material possessions for value and fulfillment can lead to various problems.

In an endless cycle of needig more things, a house can become too cluttered, debt from spending can creep in, and it can be difficult to just appreciate what one has.

In recent years, many people have turned to minimalism in terms of how they live. As a result of the trend of living with only necessities and few “unessentials,” many people have decided to buy fewer decorations or limit themselves to neutral colors as an aesthetic choice. However, that is not the purpose behind the practice.

I do not think that minimalism is the key to success, nor do

I personally practice it, but I do think they bring up important points for people to consider.

Valuing quality over quantity is important for many reasons.

It allows one to reduce the risk of clutter, for one. Nobody wants to have a garage or a room full of things they never use. Despite the fact that it might hold hidden treasures worth some money, it can become overwhelming and be more stress than it is worth in the long run.

Choosing to shop for higher-priced, higher-quality items might seem expensive up front, but it can also be a way to save money in the long run.

Buying a limited amount of high-quality, versatile clothing pieces can be more beneficial than subscribing to fast-fashion trends that will soon fade.

Especially when it comes to clothing or shoes, cheaper items may lose value or deteriorate quickly, but high-quality purchases can last for years.

Another thing to consider is that buying more stuff means that stores produce more stuff, which leads to more waste in the end. When you eventually throw away all of your unloved clothing or your extra possessions, it produces more waste.

One does not have to be a minimalist to be mindful of shopping habits. Buying less can be worth more in the end.

Do not submit to the pressure society places upon people to keep buying the latest technology, clothing trends or decorations. People should choose what they need to survive, be happy and stick with it. No more, no less.

Live in the moment, drop the phone

In today’s society, people center their entire lives around their phones and social media.

It has gotten so bad that many people view this as a normal habit for modern society.

Recently, I went to a concert and to no surprise witnessed a sea of phones held high to record every movement of the artist on stage. There was hardly anyone simply stand-

ing there and enjoying the moment, the people around them or the music being played.

What happened to living in the moment?

I will admit there are times I contribute to this mass display of social media allegiance, but it is saddening to look around and see everyone consumed by their phones rather than enjoying the company of the people around them. At times, it is shocking and disappointing how drastically this generation’s values have changed.

I have eaten at a restaurant and seen two people at a table, sitting across from each other but not saying a word.

They just stare at their phones distracted, scrolling through Twitter or some other form of social media. This is a problem.

This should not be considered normal.

When people are consumed by their phones rather than

their present surroundings, they can develop a lack of alertness and risk missing out on social interactions that contribute to making friends and developing character.

I work at a pizza restaurant where I regularly witness people interacting with their phones more than the people sitting across from them.

It happens all the time, and it makes me wonder what could be more interesting to someone than conversing with the person in front of them.

Phones have taken up too big of a role in our daily lives.

Instead of looking at a phone all day, people could be spending their time developing a skill, reading a book, interacting with other people or enjoying all the beauty the world has to offer.

When Apple sends me a weekly notification about my cell phone usage, I almost feel a

sense of accomplishment when it says that my phone usage has gone down a certain percentage. It is as if disconnecting from technology is a grand achievement.

We do not live in a world where young people would rather live in the moment than record and document every second of it to post on social media.

The pressure social media places on our society puts people in the position in which they feel the need to keep up with the latest trends or show off by sharing new experiences.

That is the sad truth.

People need to spend less time concerned with what is happening on social media and more time worrying about the things that actually matter, such as building relationships with loved ones, cherishing the little moments, and growing as an individual.
