School of Music to add graduate program, major BY TESS SCHOONHOVEN NEWS EDITOR

“Inspiring students to the highest standard of musical craft and personal character, preparing them for success in musical professions” is the new Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Music’s mission statement at California Baptist University. The new vision of the School of Music is being spearheaded by Dr. Joseph Bolin, dean of the school, and bolstered by chang-

es that have taken place this year. It will continue to mold and shape the school well into the future. Changes have been instilled in the School of Music such as degree requirements and offerings, new faculty, launching of new marketing techniques, new classes, student participation requirements and degree name changes. Bolin said every change being made is done with the goal of furthering the mission state-

ment and philosophy behind the school. “The changes we are making in the School of Music in the season are directly related to a fresh vision for the School of Music,” Bolin said. The school is seeking an increase of diversity and degree offerings to further the outreach the school has to better prepare students for multiple facets of musical careers. “When I say preparing them for success in musical profes-

sions, I mean as music educators, instrumental performers, vocal performers and also as worship leaders and composers,” Bolin said. “We want our programs to be effective in preparing our students in those areas.” Bolin also said the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the Collinsworth School of Music’s accrediting association, suggested to CBU that the bachelor of arts in Worship Arts & Ministries degree be

changed in name to give more clarity of purpose and function of the degree. Therefore, another substantial change taking place in the next year is changing the degree name to a Bachelor of the Arts in Music: Worship Arts & Ministries. The addition of the word “music” in the degree name creates more accreditation for students graduating with a worship arts degree,” Bolin said. Ally Simmons, freshman

worship arts & ministries major, said she expects the name change to benefit her job opportunities once she graduates. “Changing the name of the worship arts degree is a great move because it will open up more opportunities in music as well as ministry,” Simmons said. “The new name really encompasses all of the music classes we are required to take for this degree plan, as well as the min-

‘Beams are Creaking’ to discuss faith on stage BY AUDREY STODDARD A&E EDITOR

“The Beams are Creaking” is coming to Wallace Theatre this March starring the historical-character Dietrich Bonhoeffer; a theologian, a social justice revolutionary, a spy and an assassin. The play is set in Berlin in 1945 — post World War II. In the play, a group of survivors takes a jump back into time to tell the story of Bonhoeffer. As a theologian, Bonhoffer’s goal was to create a unified church. He was one of the founding members of the underground church during Nazi-Germany. Caleb Leal, junior theatre major, will be staring as Bonehoffer and said he has taken the time to get into character by reading Bonhoeffer’s biography and some of his writings. “This is my first time playing a historical character. So it’s a challenge in that sense of creating an honest representation of
