Navigating your 20s: Wisdom from those who have been where you are now Written by Krista Abrahamsen Illustrated by Heather Finnigan h, to be 20 years old. The crippling stress of college. The constant feeling you are not doing enough. The looming fear of the future. All of these factors can overshadow the thrill of being young, but people who have conquered this part of life constantly say the best years of their lives were when they were in their 20s.

Through conversations with a professor at California Baptist University and two undergraduates in their later 20s, a range of advice — from changing majors to dropping out and facing the unknown — is shared through their wisdom and experience.

A common source of worry for young adults is what career path to choose. There can be intense pressure to find a career that is both financially stable and enjoyable.

Dirk Dallas, assistant professor of graphic design, says he studied a subject in which he was not as interested for the wrong reasons before he decided to switch to a discipline he

is still passionate about today.

“I (originally) picked elementary education so I could be a school teacher, and a big reason was to be financially stable,” Dallas says. “My girlfriend at the time, who is now my wife, could tell I was not into it. I would really light up when I was creating things so she encouraged me to pursue that further.”

Dallas transferred schools and began his education in graphic design at the age of 20. He eventually dove into the world of commercials and marketing, something he genuinely wanted to do.

Similarly, James Earhart, 26-year-old junior graphic design major, says he experienced a significant life change when he was not able to go to a university he thought was his dream school.

He worked hard to become the highest scholarship earner in Southern California with $98,000 in scholarship funds. Despite his scholarships and financial aid, the cost was

During his time at a community college, Earhart began studying business, a subject his mother confronted him about because she felt it was not right for him.

“She said it was not me, and she said she missed how I used to be. I got back to my art, and in the past two years I make my own commissions and have gone viral on my YouTube account, Power Chords Project,” Earhart says.

When Dallas reflects on his time spent in college, he says he did not realize the beautiful opportunity he was given.

“Most people in college probably aren’t married, probably don’t have two car payments, a mortgage and kids,” Dallas says.

“What a special time to take advantage of the four years where you can really grow.”

Other than teaching, he now works as a photographer and motion designer. Dallas has built himself a brand online with his Instagram account @dirka, amassing 300 thousand followers.

Dallas says people should not be in such a rush to get into a career because they have the rest of their lives to do so.

“People are so anxious to get out and work.

You’re going to be doing that until you’re 70, take advantage of this time,” Dallas says. “Do not see school as some task to check off, but as an opportunity to explore and experiment.”

Laura Sims, 27-year-old junior public health major, is an example of someone who took her time with college. She was 18 years old when she initially went to a community college and had plans to transfer to the University of California, Riverside, with a friend but dropped out two years later after, she says, struggling to pass math.

After working for a few years, she decided to go to massage therapy school and even opened

her own business for the practice. When the job became too demanding, Sims made the tough decision to quit and go to California Baptist University full time. In spring 2018 she finally passed math, which gave her the push to keep going and take more tough classes.

“I felt bad that I quit going to college at the time because I missed the opportunity to go to UCR with my friend, but things do happen for a reason so I’m actually happy I came back at the time that I did because I am more mature about it,” Sims says.

Financial maturity is a core threaded through the discussion with all three individuals. Earhart says he wishes he was not scared of student loans or debt when he was beginning college and mentions it costs money to make money.

“My mom is a single parent, my brother is mentally disabled, and I grew up in a very poor home,” Earhart says. “I was always afraid and would say, ‘I have no money. I can’t really do that.’ But when you pick the career that you know is meant for you, and when you have the drive, that changes things and people see that. Don’t let money be in the way of what you want to do.”

Dallas talks about how a similar principle can be applied to picking a career.

“Being financially stable is important and a good thing to think about, but when you get to

the heart of it, I was trying to take things into my own hands so I wouldn’t have to trust God,” Dallas says.

Sims encourages younger students to remember to work on themselves and not always rely on other people.

“I see this a lot with my friends, they absorb themselves to other people,” Sims says. “In relationships they become that person, but they should have their own identity. Even with your career or schooling, don’t do something because of another person — what if something happens?”

A major piece of advice Dallas offers students is to guard their identity in Christ, saying identity is not defined by their major, current circumstances or worries about the future.

“I am a child of God and have access to God, hope and a future. I am a new creation,” Dallas says. “I am so much more than just my major. What if I had a position right now at some great design firm and then I lose my job? If my identity is wrapped up in my job, I’ll be super-depressed.”

No matter what walk of life you are in, your identity stands with God, not a degree, career or relationships. And take a deep breath — life continues regardless, so it is best not to rush the time you have now. ◆

HOW STIGMAS AGAINST MENTAL ILLNESS CAN DAMAGE ONE EMOTIONALLY AND SPIRITUALLY, AND THE NEEDED CHANGE Written and photographed

oday, according to studies by The National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in four college students is diagnosed with a mental illness.

Mental illnesses work directly against a person, replacing confidence, peace and hope with a dark and gloomy state of insufficiency.

They replace all hope with despair and anxiety.

Destruction in place of flourishing. A sense of overwhelming worry in place of peace.

In simple terms, mental illnesses tear people apart from within and are the root causes of self-harm and rising suicide rates.

NAMI also found that many who are suffering from mental illness have not received help or compassion.

For those looking for empathy and support, judgment and confinement are usually handed to them instead.

Mental illnesses have different causes; some are hereditary, others emerge from posttraumatic stress and some build in the form of anxiety and depression from a difficult time in a person’s life.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, mental illnesses are common health conditions based on changes in thinking, emotions and other behaviors that are caused medically and function like any other disease.

Recovery from mental illness can be difficult and can be accompanied by negative social stigmas as victims are pushed deeper into their own feelings of hopelessness. Across multiple religions, a stigma against those

suffering from mental illness persists.

Some branches of Christianity have come to conclusions that a true Christian could not suffer from mental illness, as this means a person must not have a true faith in God, who supplies peace, hope and joy — thus making a mental illness impossible.

This stigma is traced to Bible verses, such as Philippians 4:6-7, which says: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

The verse says that when believers lay their fears and anxieties on God and his promises, their hearts and minds will be guarded, which has led many Christians to believe only unbelievers could suffer from mental illnesses.

David Mandani, pastor of Mental Health Ministry at Saddleback Church, says this stigma has deep roots, but should no longer be an injustice against mental illness victims.

“This stigma is not new. For example, people with leprosy were stigmatized,” Mandani says. “They suffered greatly living a life of isolation just like many Christians who have been impacted by mental illness today. When you have a heart attack or diagnosis of cancer people come with compassion to care for you and your family, but when a family member gets hospitalized for a mental health crisis, no one typically comes to care — this is because of stigma.”8

For those affected by mental illnes, this stigma takes away any hope, as religion usually brings belonging, aspiration and identity.

When a Christian is told that he or she is hurting because they are not believing enough to be truly healed, it may take away the one ounce of hope that keeps them from giving up.

Mandani says he not only believes those with mental illnesses are hurt emotionally by this stigma, but also spiritually.

“Stigma affects people impacted with mental illness in many ways. It can be a barrier for people to get care, leading to unnecessary pain and suffering,” Mandani says. “Furthermore, stigma labels people with mental illness, thus stripping them of their God-given dignity.

Stigma perpetuates pain, includes social rejection and dehumanizes others.”

For those affected by mental illness, these stigmas questioning the authenticity of their faith can make their recovery more difficult, as it also causes them to have to justify their faith to others.

Stephanie Seidler, junior music composition major, says this stigma directly influences her battle with depression and anxiety.

“A lot of people believe if you have God, you shouldn’t be anxious,” Seidler says. “This makes me feel bad that I have mental illnesses — like I should just flip a switch and stop worrying. It makes me feel like I’m not true to my faith when I really am, but they don’t think that.”

Christians are sometimes quick to forget even some of the most faithful and devout followers of God suffered from depression, hopelessness and emptiness.

Elijah, a prophet of God who selflessly served him and obeyed his laws throughout his years, asked God to kill him. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah found himself in depression, begging for God to take away the pain of the grief, fear and hopelessness he felt.

Another one of God’s most faithful servants, David, is also seen throughout Psalms crying out to God because of the pain and hopelessness that is too hard to bear in his life.

These examples of God’s greatest servants are often overlooked as concrete examples of true believers who suffered from mental illnesses.

Jamie Counihan, freshman entrepreneurship major, says the judgment she has faced as a Christian struggling with anxiety has made her fight more difficult.

“When people say mental illnesses only affect nonbelievers, it makes me feel judged,” Counihan says.

“Just because my mental health isn’t in perfect shape,

it does not reflect my relationship with God. It breaks my heart to know that some churches and institutions will belittle someone else solely because of their mental state.

“God has never given his children something they cannot handle. Mental health is a subject that needs to be normalized in personal conversation and especially in conversation in the church.”

As some Christians are quick to assume victims lack faith, they also forget the need to embody Christ-like love, forgiveness and compassion. Christians battling any mental illness should not be defined by the struggle they did not choose to have, but rather by the title onto which they hold: being a Christian.

People who suffer from mental illnesses are struggling. It is a battle in their mind that constantly rings through their head, reminding them how scary situations can be while introducing a lack of self-worth and a wealth of inadequacy. It is a suffocating and exhausting battle that leads many to hide their

thoughts and believe their escape from the pain is hopeless.

However, God offers a different peace, one that should not be ruined by Christians who believe those battling a mental health crisis are not doing enough to receive it.

Dr. John Montgomery, dean of Spiritual Life, says Christians should be working to proclaim the right message toward mental illness, one of restoration instead of hopelessness.

“Where there is a stigma, it seems there is a belief that the healing we find in Christ is supposed to solve everything to some degree,” Montgomery says. “Of course, this is not reality. Justification, or salvation, is about placing us into right relationship with God through Christ, and sanctification, the process of becoming more like Christ, according to Romans 8:29, is a progressive and gradual process that we participate in, but it can be a bumpy road as we learn to die to self.

“Expecting that our lives, whether mental, emotional, physical or spiritual, will

instantaneously be transformed to a heavenly reality is not taught in Scripture.”

Christians are not perfect people, and having God in your life does not bring about a spotless life. In fact, the Bible says a life with Christ will be difficult. But these biblical truths do not mean mental illnesses equal a hypocritical faith or insufficient salvation, but rather a season in need of further reliance and trust in God. Those suffering from mental illnesses should not be told they are not enough.

“It is not a sin to be sick,” Mandani says.

“Your illness is not your identity. Your chemistry is not your character.”

Churches today that preach of Christ’s love, forgiveness and restoration should not be preaching hopelessness and undeserving blame to those Christians who struggle with mental illnesses. Instead, they should show the Christ-like love they preach to them with open arms and minds. ◆

lifestyle t’s a story we have all heard before. Boy meets girl and it is love at first sight. Soon, wedding bells are ringing, a white picket fence borders their new life together, and they live happily ever after. This is the rom-com fantasy of countless young men and women.

Yet, in the fast-paced culture of 21st century America, this is no longer the ideal mode of meeting and interacting with potential romantic partners. Society has transformed and reflects a new value – love at first swipe.

Now, mobile catalogs of all prospective love interests nearby are one swipe away. Apps such as Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and others dominate popular dating culture, drawing in many younger users, particularly 18-25-yearolds. In fact, 40 percent of Americans use dating apps and an estimated 20 percent of current, committed relationships began online.

The dating app scene took off four years ago when Tinder became two years old and started reaching a record one billion swipes a day. Since then, the popularity of dating apps has continued to grow. While plenty of comical interactions have come from online dating sites, many would-be romantics still flock to apps to find soul-mate love. Users join in hopes that first impressions will separate the wheat from the chaff, and help them narrow down who they may actually want to date in real life.

But are these dating apps really beneficial to their users?

Dr. Douglas Wallace, associate professor of sociology, says dating apps can be valuable if used properly.

“Can it work? Yes, if there’s a high degree of awareness and intentionality, but that doesn’t happen enough,” Wallace says.

Wallace contends that when used carelessly, dating apps minimize the people on the other side of the screen, recklessly playing with other people’s emotions rather than treating them as human beings. This mentality has led to many new dating trends, such as “ghosting,” where someone will simply never reply again leaving the other party to wonder what happened.

Remarking on the trend, Wallace says, an individual would not do that in real life.

Before the advent of online dating, meeting romantic interests often happened organically through mutual friends and being a part of similar circles. This makes ghosting nearly impossible, as the other person will still be around even if communication ceases.

However, with this new ability to connect from a distance, ghosting has become an unfortunate reality.

Wallace says he believes the source of this problem is people’s unwillingness to push through hard moments in a relationship and forge something better.

“We don’t fix relationships; we just throw them out and find a new one,” Wallace says.

“The problem is that doesn’t give us the time or the opportunity to develop the intimacy that we really all crave.”8

Glamour magazine writer Dana Schwartz describes Tinder as a place that turns people into “cardboard cutouts” of themselves. People are flimsy versions of who they really are, reduced to a photo and a quippy bio.

“Our attraction to a person in the real world is based on their smell, the sound of their voice, the things they laugh at,” Schwartz says, lamenting that Tinder has killed the excitement and delight of a “crush.”

Similarly, Fabiola Rivas, senior early childhood studies major, says that after using dating apps she realizes that it is not how she wants to find love.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that I want my partner to be my friend before anything else,” Rivas says.

Rivas explains that the dates she went on from apps were experiences mainly ruled by awkwardness as they both attempted to learn the basics about one another and form a connection. She says there is pressure on all the small things they say and it felt overwhelming.

lifestyle “It is very hard now for me to believe someone can fall in love and create a life with a stranger just because of what they see on social media,” Rivas says. “Trust is important for me in a relationship and I find it hard to trust someone I don’t know and no one around me knows either.”

Rivas advises anyone who may be interested in using dating apps to clearly understand their motivations for doing so first.

“Don’t let desperation drive your decisions.

It is OK to be single,” Rivas says. “Everyone needs that time to get to know who they are and what they want in life. The right person should come into your life without you having to put much effort into it.”

However, Wallace points out, “Whether dating apps are good or bad, they’re here.”

It’s true — the reality is dating apps are not going away anytime soon. New apps gain popularity all the time. The real struggle for the modern single is not whether or not to use dating apps but learning to approach them with wisdom and discernment rather than being a mindless swiper.

“Like all technology, it should be a tool, but we should be aware of our own humanity and the limitations there, to begin with,” Wallace says.

Dating app users must reckon with this reality and be conscious of the downside of looking for love online. As society moves away from the dream of Prince Charming and a “glass slipper,” people will continue to look for that perfect match online, hoping that the “one” is just a swipe away. ◆

Artistry Abroad Seattle’s Influence on Artisans of Every Discipline

F

erries emerge through the low-hanging clouds that hover over the “hub of artistry” for the Pacific Northwest. Artists of every discipline find collaboration not only with each other but also with the energy the city provides.

Seattle has remained an ever-changing center for innovation, community and art since its quiet beginning as a logging town. From music, art, food and more, this city has made a name for itself in the creative world and has impacted its residents by developing a rich culture.

Frye Museum The Frye Museum sits atop a hill overlooking downtown Seattle and the sleepy waterfront skyline. It houses almost all local artists with a constant rotation of works that challenges its viewers to look at life differently. Only one mile from the more well-known Seattle Art Museum, Kelsey Barnes, gallery guide, says she chose to work at Frye for its mix of traditional and contemporary artwork that allows for exhibits that are outside the box.

“It has that mix of the old and new but it seems like there is a focus on Seattle artists that you don’t see in other museums in the area,” Barnes says.

The most recognizable section of the museum is the salon. The main room houses the initial collection of portrait and landscape paintings that were integral to the founding of the muse-

um. The 150 varying works of art are hung from floor to ceiling and are displayed to imitate how they were viewed in Charles and Emma Frye’s home before donating to the museum space.

Glass Blowing Seattle is not only a home for art created long ago but a bustling community of artists that share a beautiful sense of support and encouragement rather than a competitive nature.

At Glasshouse Studio, a sense of comradery among the artists are instantly felt as customers walk through the doors. The laughter of the artists echo through the showroom as they face the open flame to pull and pry the malleable glass to form its desired shape.

After seeing glass blowing on TV, Hugh Willa found a studio where classes were offered and has been blowing glass professionally for 13 years. He works primarily out of Seattle Glassblowing Study but visits other shops to collaborate and learn alongside friends, such as Yoshie Sugo and Colin Satterfield, who both worked the flame behind him. A resident of Seattle, he says he finds energy and inspiration for his work from his interactions with the world around him.

“Typically, my everyday experiences with people (drives me creatively),” Willa says. “I do a lot of work based on my weird, emotional interactions or strange things that happen. It can be hard to imagine what that is in glassblowing.”

Satterfield began his career in Dallas but says he enjoys the greater number of artists who reside in Seattle and the talent with whom he gets to work alongside.

“You see somebody excel and it pushes you to do better. You can learn — ­ no one is really keeping the secrets to themselves,” Satterfield says. “Glassblowing is really a team effort.”

Coffee The booming coffee industry in Seattle comes as a surprise to none, but it extends far past the reach of Starbucks. Originally from Phoenix, Nathan Wirrig left his coffee shop in Dayton, Ohio, for the fresh roasteries of the Pacific Northwest. Although typically on the corporate side of things, Wirrig took a break and put on his apron for the day to serve alongside his fellow baristas at Slate Coffee Roasters. He says he is proud of the environment he has been able to cultivate at Slate.

“We prep not only amazing coffee, but also provide the hospitality behind it,” Wirrig says.

Despite the typically fast-paced shop that matches the city, he takes 30 seconds to make an impact on someone’s day and make him or her smile.

Every milk brand and pastry is carefully chosen to accompany the coffee they roast in house — down to the seed to enhance and respect the work of the farmers who provided them. It is not just a cup of coffee, but an experience8

unlike any shop previously visited in Seattle, with everyone giving a personal touch.

Wirrig says every shop he has worked at has shaped him in different ways. The coffee community in Seattle is smaller than expected but there is a competitive nature in this field since everyone is working to impress the customer and each other.

Wirrig says he does not give into the coffee-snob culture. He jokes that while there is an ethos or a paradigm around specialty coffee

and that group, they do not want to force black espresso on customers, but still offer sweet-syrup and pastries and make them well.

Chocolatier Hidden among the variety of coffee shops on every corner sits Intrigue Chocolate Co. and its proud head chocolatier, Aaron Barthel. He says he is prepared to open one’s mind for a culinary adventure that was previously thought impossible.

His hobby grew from his background in ecology and botany but it soon bloomed into a business. He made truffles for a friend’s catering business for a year and a half before branching off to form his own chocolate lab of concoctions.

“I have always wanted to be a mad scientist, but it’s all about the plants, herbs and spices,” Barthel says.

Basil was the second flavor he came up with 18 years ago after brainstorming a more interesting spin on the overdone mint-chocolate flavor.

He stands behind his counter with the 400 flavors that have come into existence since that flavor breakthrough almost two decades ago.

He questions customers on their individual preferences and shares his personal favorites, each truffle unlike anything tasted before. He requests that, during each tasting, customers wait and savor the chocolate they are trying, letting it melt fully.

“The reason for melting is your tongue only tastes five things — salt, sweet, sour, bitter and

umami,” Barthel says. “Everything else you taste through smell.”

He says that the people of Seattle are willing to be surprised so he is not afraid to take risks in his work. He draws inspiration from the culinary scene around him, sampling flavor combinations on menus and food blogs and bringing them into his own kitchen.

“The first thing I always do is that I try it on its own in a truffle — you see what it will do and how it will express itself,” Bathel says. “If I build

a flavor profile, what holes do I want to fill in, what do I want to build around it?”

Seattle has become an epicenter for artists in the Pacific Northwest in every form. This melting pot of creativity has formed a community that builds off one another and inspires each one for a surge of positivity and forward thinking. As more young artists migrate up north, a new generation of storytellers and innovators join the cloud-covered hills as they dream up what is next in this rainy city. ◆

or many college students, using a weekend to admire art may not be at the top of their to-do list, but with the museums and exhibits around Los Angeles, skipping these cultural epicenters for another beach day could result in missing out.

Museums are escalating the appeal of many artforms and creating an inviting space for those of varying interests and art appreciation backgrounds.

Whether a die-hard Taylor Swift fan or a sucker for the perfect Instagram photo, LA houses a museum for every interest. Some of the most popular in the area are The Broad, The Getty, the Grammy Museum, the Griffith Observatory and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which all offer amazing experiences for visitors.

For the Social Media Lover The Broad in Downtown Los Angeles offers trendy modern art, unending photo opportunities and experiences. This museum continues to grow in popularity because of its Instagram-famous exhibits.

One of the most renowned exhibits currently at the Broad is “The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away” by Yayoi Kusama. The exhibit reveals an infinity-mirrored room that isolates one visitor onto a platform — surrounded by mirrors, lights and even water — producing an image that is infinitely unlike any other art installation.

Megan Escobosa, freshman photography major, says she enjoys museums because the more time an individual spends in a museum, the more noticeable the detail and thought is behind each art piece or experience.

“I enjoy museums as they take you back in time to see the creative processes people had,” Escobosa says. “There are so many exhibits, sculptures and paintings in The Broad that show the intricacy and thought behind the cre-

ators’ visions. It’s extremely interesting to see a piece of their story, as well.”

The Broad is also known for its sculptures, including a gigantic, blue, balloon-animal dog, giant multicolored metal tulips and an oversized wooden table and chair set under which visitors can walk.

For the Classic Art Lover One of the most visited museums in the LA area is the Getty Center and the Getty Villa on a separate campus in the Pacific Palisades.

Keishia Gu, head of education at The Getty, says museums have a lot to offer students, specifically.

“Museums can be a source of creative inspiration, a place to learn about world cultures across time, a venue to connect with and share meaningful experiences with friends, as well as a place for quiet contemplation and rest,” Gu says. “With free admission and great views, The Getty offers all of these experiences and more for all students wishing to partake. With free Wifi and ample espresso drinks available at our coffee carts, on a sunny day, we even make a great space to write a term paper or study for a final exam.”

The Getty also offers specific events and programs for college students, including paid internships, college nights, concerts and workstudy programs.

“We consistently look for opportunities to institutionalize the ways that we can enable our museum and college academic departments to collaborate fruitfully,” Gu says, “and we want to strengthen the educational role of The Getty and its collections in the teaching and training of undergraduates and graduate students.”

The Getty offers two annual college nights, one at the Getty Villa, typically in the fall, and one at the Getty Center, in the spring.

Gu describes these events as a celebration of all things creative. The museum is open exclusively to college students and includes art-making classes, performers, tours and

many other experiences.

Whether or not students visit during a college-specific event or just for a fun day with friends, The Getty is known for offering a lively experience to its visitors.

Lance Bordon, freshman entrepreneurship major, says his latest visit to The Getty was fascinating.

“I enjoyed seeing the creativity of other eras and being able to appreciate the world of the past and the world we live in today,” Bordon says. “My experience at The Getty was awe-inspiring as everything had some prolific element implemented into it, all the way from the architecture to the over-engineering of the simple doorways. However, the most intriguing part was the fact that these works were created by hand so ornately without the use of any modern machinery we have available (today).”

For the Music Lover The Grammy Museum is not a typical gallery-style museum as it steps out of the usually reserved museum atmosphere and provides multiple interactive exhibits for visitors.

Starting on the top floor of the museum and working back down, elevator doors open to reveal a hallway playing clips of previous Grammy award speeches, and centered in the room are models of each improvement to the Grammy award itself.

Among the four floors, interactive band equipment, recording studios, sound equipment and records of historic music are spread throughout for visitors to discover and become artists and producers of their own.

Other traveling exhibits focus on certain artists, such as Johnny Cash, Katy Perry, Michael Jackson and The Beatles.

As the LA area, and even Riverside, holds many museums, there are art experiences awaiting every type of person. Whether music lovers, Renaissance fans, or even Instagram addicts, there is a museum for each and every visitor. ◆

Majestic bronze bells overlooking the sacred courtyards. The California missions have been an important aspect of this state’s culture for hundreds of years, as well as a source of education and inspiration to many since their founding.

The history Twenty-one different missions across California were established between 1769 and 1823. Sixteen of the 21 missions are located in Southern California, including San Luis Rey in Oceanside and the San Juan Capistrano.

Four of the missions, including San Luis Rey, are still operated by the Franciscan order and seven of them are National Historic Landmarks.

The missions have become excellent windows into the past for Southern California natives to explore the history of their home.

John and Tina Caporello, Orange County residents, explain the historical significance of the missions to Southern Californians.

“California does not have a lot of older history because most of our history started after the Gold Rush, which was almost 50 years after the missions were built,” John Caporello says.

Many of CBU’s California-native students spent their fourth-grade lessons diving into the history of these missions and recreating their own with sugar cubes and other art supplies.

Those who lived near these historic landmarks went on field trips to the missions at one time or another —

making them a staple of California culture.

The Caporellos explain that they enjoy revisiting the missions as adults as they were excited to see how the missions have changed over the years.

Growing up “We grew up in Southern California and as kids we learnined about the missions in school. Coming back here was a great experience, especially seeing how much the missions have grown since we were in school,” Tina Caporello says.

However, you do not have to be a Southern California native to appreciate the significance and beauty of the missions.

only for their excellent cultural and educational experience, but also to learn more about the immersive history of California and the impact immigrants have had on the country.

major, originally from Washington, said she has never been to the missions but is interested to learn more about them.

“I would visit the missions (as) it is important to learn from the past and face some of the difficult things in our past to learn for the future,” Johnson says.

The historical and religious significance of the missions cannot be understated. The missions have long been signs of hope to weary travelers and Native Americans seeking hospitality from the Spanish Friars.

Mechelle Adams, executive director of San Juan Capistrano Mission, says even today the missions serve as sources of hope to many.

“People with terminal illnesses and many others come to the chapel to experience renewed inspiration and hope that they can’t buy in a jar. It’s a natural presence,” Adams says.

“There is a lot of disagreement (in society) and it is nice to go to a place that is an oasis from all of that.”

unique features Each one of the missions has its own unique features that draw thousands of people to them each year. San Juan Capistrano’s two koi ponds and San Serra Chapel are two of Capistrano’s most attractive and popular features.

San Serra Chapel is the most historically significant church in California as it is the only remaining California mission church in which Father Junipero Serra celebrated mass.

San Luis Rey’s cemetery, which is the oldest in North County, and San Juan Bautista’s Guadalupe Chapel both illustrate the beauty of the missions.

These missions, which were originally set up by the Spanish in an attempt to convert Native Americans to Christianity, are symbols of the Spanish heritage and culture that is still highly evident across Southern California.

They diffused Spanish culture into Southern California through their unique architecture and by establishing numerous churches and

spreading Christianity throughout the region.

The missions are being well-preserved to help keep their aged architecture and sacred chapels intact for the coming generations to explore. Restoring the missions is necessary for continued education and exploration, with many becoming learning centers and historical landmarks for children and adults alike.

The administrations at the missions are working hard to ensure that they will be around for years to come.

“It’s important to keep historical landmarks relevant and have a place for people to come back to time and time again,” Adams says.

Southern California’s missions exemplify the beauty and culture of California, boasting their educational and cultural significance.

They are windows into the history of California and the impact immigrants have had in shaping not only the state, but the country as a whole.

Whether a native Californian or visitor, a trip to the missions is a worthy excursion for anyone and is sure to be filled with rich history and California beauty. ◆

I’m good, just tired.

Four words heard consistently in the college circle. It seems everyone is lacking sleep. Even for the few who are getting the suggested seven to nine hours, it still is not enough to keep them happy and alert at all times.

The issue of sleep deprivation looms over students’ heads like a dark cloud that never goes away. It can be escaped for a little while by retreating for a nap, but it is not long before emersion from one’s apartment is inevitable and the real world must be faced, again being enveloped by the gray shadow of sleeplessness.

Is this cloud permanent, or can it be driven away with better habits and consistent effort in a healthier direction? Is it even a concern?

The National Sleep Foundation says that sleep is a key element to keeping your body strong and able to fight sickness.

“Without sufficient sleep, your body makes fewer cytokines, a type of protein that targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response,” the foundation’s website says.

“Cytokines are both produced and released during sleep, causing a double whammy if you skimp

on shut-eye.”

In the winter and early spring season, sickness races through students in colleges. Spending a large majority of the day surrounded by people who carry bacteria, the likelihood of catching a cold may rise.

Lack of sleep is the “cherry on top” to slighting the immune system.

A proper sleep schedule is key to keeping one’s body not only physically healthy but mentally healthy, as well. Is it possible to pass classes, maintain a social life and keep a happy persona when the cloud of sleep deprivation follows every step? How much does sleep really affect a positive mental state?

Amber-Leigh Morris, senior nursing major, says she immediately feels mentally and physically drained after a sleepless night. Morris says a lack of sleep directly affects a person’s attitude and ability to think properly.

“When you don’t get enough sleep your body goes into overdrive,” Morris says. “That actually keeps you from losing weight and sometimes makes you gain weight because your body8

doesn’t have enough time to recover at night.

“You need the sleep for your body to build back its metabolism. Then, mentally, nothing functions right. Your brain doesn’t get enough oxygen and it just doesn’t work right.

You’re not going to be at your maximum brain capacity.”

Graceson Lassley, junior psychology major, says that the main issue she faces in regard to sleep is that there simply are not enough hours in the day to get everything done. Lassley is a resident adviser in The Colony apartments in addition to her studies, which adds another demand on her already busy life.

“If I want to hang out with people, do my job and get my homework done, I have to stay up late,” Lassley says. “If I did get sleep I wouldn’t get those things done, so what’s better?”

Many students face the same dilemma as Lassley and search for a solution. Students may face long-term ramifications for poor sleeping habits despite trying to cope with quick fixes such as caffeine or skipping classes to nap. Most understand this is not the healthiest or wisest option, yet do it anyway for lack of a better option.

“You’re filling your body with caffeine to substitute what your body is supposed to be

doing, which is getting a healthy amount of sleep,” Lassley says.

Sara Rockvam, senior nursing major, says she believes college students, in particular, may disregard the danger of bad sleeping habits because they secretly think they are invincible and act as if their bodies can do anything.

“At the age that we’re in, 18-20 years old, your brain actually is not (fully) developed in knowing the consequences of your actions, so a lot of college students think they’re invincible,” Rockvam says. “They’re not really taking care of their bodies because they believe they can do anything and it’s just because our brain isn’t to that point where people can fully see there are actual, real consequences to this and they need to stop.”

Avoiding over-commitment can be one way to manage time efficiently, allowing for more sleep.

“Learn to say ‘no,’” Lassley says with a chuckle. “It’s how you prioritize your life.”

But staying up late and sacrificing sleep can be a social adjustment, as well. Many times students congregate for hangouts in the evening hours. This brings out the night owl in students, even if efficiency may be higher

in the morning. They would rather stay up late and get things done slowly with friends than get up early and get things done alone.

“That’s my time to spend with people at the end of the day,” Lassley says. “I’m willing to compromise sleep in order to get work done and build relationships with people.”

Morris says the tendency to prioritize other things over sleep shows people do not understand the value rest has on overall well-being.

“From an outside perspective, if someone says, ‘I got 10 hours of sleep last night,’ others will ask, ‘Why weren’t you studying?’” Morris says. “It seems lazy or selfish rather than, ‘No, I’m taking care of myself so I can be more successful.’”

Lisa Bangean, senior nursing major, says a lack of sleep is something college students will even celebrate.

“It’s more glorified to run on less sleep because it shows you’re more productive,” Bangean says. “But it’s not true.”

However, it is often the habits right before going to sleep that cause even those few hours of rest to be less helpful.

Taking efforts to have a healthy routine before bed in a more purposeful way can yield significantly better sleeping habits. Things that should be avoided include eating right before going to sleep, looking at a phone and even doing homework in bed.

“I know I don’t get good sleep when I’m stressed so I try to find time for self-care before bed,” Lassley says. “When I’m really tired, I take a shower before bed and read a book.”

Students will often try to “catch up” on their sleep on weekends or less busy days, but trying to replace missed hours of sleep all in one day does not accomplish the same purpose as getting a consistent amount of sleep.

The sleep foundation says that making up missed sleep can help for a little while but is ineffective in the long run.

“The best sleep habits are consistent, healthy routines that allow all of us, regardless of our age, to meet our sleep needs every night, and keep on top of life’s challenges every day,” the foundation’s website says.

Lassley admits to trying this tactic on the weekends like many of her fellow students, but also encourages naps in 20-minute increments. To help monitor this Lassley suggests an app called “Sleep Cycle” that tracks sleeping habits throughout the night and determines how well-rested users are or how well they slept that night. The app wakes people up at just the right time within their REM cycle to be the most awake.

“It tracks your sleep throughout the night through your movement, or you could (set) it for sound,” Lassey says. “You just put it on your bed and you set an hour increment that you want to wake up and then the app wakes you within the perfect time in that hour,” Lassley says.

Escaping the sleep deprivation cloud can seem like a lofty task but the positive results of taking better care of your body through sleep are unmatched. So grab a pillow and take a nap. You’ll thank yourself tomorrow. ◆

Clutter is everywhere. Whether someone’s phone is jumbled by too many applications or one’s desk is too messy, there is always room to reorganize and take steps toward a minimalist approach to life.

As more people are becoming aware of the extensive clutter in their lives, many are turning to minimalism. This lifestyle encourages the practice of living with fewer possessions than the average person and focusing on necessities. It decreases clutter and eliminates unnecessary distractions, leaving people feeling refreshed.

Today, minimalism has become a trend.

Whether someone has heard about Marie Kondo’s new Netflix series, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” (2019), watched the documentary “Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things” (2015) or seen the rise in popularity of YouTube videos dedicated to the topic, it seems to be appearing everywhere.

The approach stands out for being a simple, modern way to decorate a house. Fewer items

lay around or on walls, and everything has a purpose. It is an appealing lifestyle for many people, and it is difficult to understand what being a minimalist really means and how to get started.

Three years ago, YouTuber Lia of “Lia’s Loft” decided to become a minimalist. Unsure of whether or not it would work, she began a YouTube channel to document her experience.

The channel is not only a bi-weekly lifestyle video and blog hub but a community of like-minded people who are also on a journey toward simple living. Their goal is to maximize life aspirations, potential and values, her channel says.

“Minimalism allowed me to strip away the layers of things I had for the sake of who I thought I should be versus who I was,” Lia says. “It allowed me to connect with myself, realize my identity and then to only keep things that aligned. I now live by ensuring that every action I take, and everything I own, is a reflection of my own needs and values rather than those instilled through my past or consumerism. It’s brought me clarity, simply put.”

How A Minimalistic Lifestyle Can Bring� Clarity and Align Identity With Values

However, Lia advises that people should consider minimalism as a long-term change, not a short-term trend to follow.

A NEW MI NDSET “The biggest tip I have for someone looking into minimalism is to take the time to prepare your mindset. Understand why you’re doing it and ensure that you see a long-term lifestyle goal — not a short-term aesthetic,” Lia says.

“Start sitting down and questioning why you’re making purchases that you don’t want or need and what that’s trying to fulfill for you. Do you have trouble saying no to others? No to sales?

No to your impulses? It’s breaking down the mindset so you can be conscious during your journey. This, I find without a doubt, leads to the most successful experiences.”

Madeline McJunkin, junior intercultural studies major, decided to stick with a minimalist lifestyle after living abroad with few possessions for a year.

“I just realized the more stuff I had, the more stressed out I was. That’s just part of our culture that we think our accumulation of stuff

equates to happiness, but it really doesn’t,” McJunkin says. “I lived on (about) five shirts and five bottoms for a year and that was more than enough, so afterward it was just really freeing not having as much stuff and I wanted to carry that on.”

McJunkin says one of the challenges she faced turning to minimalism was deciding what to keep and what to shed.

“I have a hard time throwing things away because sometimes it feels wasteful. Even if you’re giving it away, it’s just kind of hard to let things go sometimes, especially if they have sentimental value,” McJunkin says.

Not only does minimalism reduce clutter within one’s life, but it also serves as a good way to reduce spending. If one stops buying unnecessary items, more money will be available, either to save or to invest in long-term items that will serve a purpose.

McJunkin says living a minimalist lifestyle challenged her to value quality over quantity when shopping. She tries to be smarter about her purchases and buy things she truly enjoys.

“It makes me more cautious about what I buy. I realized that I would use shopping sometimes as an emotional buffer or something. I would do it when I’m stressed out, but it’s not really healthy,” McJunkin says.

Austin Lentz, sophomore accounting major, says that though American culture teaches materialism, it is not always necessary.

“The misconception when you’re growing up is that you have to get cheap stuff, but the reason behind that is when you’re buying clothes for kids, you get worse (quality) stuff for them because they are going to grow out of it,” Lentz says. “But it’s better to just get something expensive that’s a one-time thing, will last longer and have a better quality life.”

LI FESTYLE CHANGE Lia and McJunkin both emphasize that people should not participate in minimalism just because it is trendy. It is important to recognize that living minimally is a lifestyle change, not a way to decorate a room.

Regardless of whether or not someone chooses to partake in minimalism fully or by making subtle changes, it can change lives for the better.

That pile of old blankets sitting in the closet? The stack of notebooks in the desk? Take a look at what you have and evaluate whether or not it serves a purpose. One does not have to be a minimalist to take a step back and declutter every once in a while. ◆

This is Jackson Waldrop’s skateboard, a memento of his time learning tricks, grinding rails and hopping curbs. A board that will likely join the stack of broken boards Waldrop has been collecting ever since he began skating at 8 years old.

Waldrop, sophomore communication studies major, grew up in Prague and Istanbul and embedded himself in the skating culture there from an early age.

“Since there was a culture of skating that I already knew, it was a way in,” Waldrop says.

“That’s the thing about skating: You can go anywhere, any sort of place in the world — any city — but if you go to a skate park and you’re a skater you’re already accepted.”

As Waldrop integrated into the skating community internationally, he developed a deeper understanding of the language and the people, absorbing wisdom from those around him and teaching those just starting to learn.

An Intern ation al commun ity “People in America treat it like a hobby, but in Turkey it felt more like a lifestyle. There’s a family and culture to it that a lot of people don’t understand,” Waldrop says.

Throughout his childhood and young adulthood abroad, the skating community became an integral part of Waldrop’s life. So when Waldrop returned to the United States to attend California Baptist University, he came with this same mindset of building a skating family.8

“I would seek out people who legitimately skated. I would go to the caf and see boards outside and say ‘That one has scratches. This guy knows how to skate.

I need to meet this guy who owns this board.’ I wanted to know everyone who skated,” Waldrop says. “If you have a board, if you want to learn tricks, I want to know you, I want to be your friend, I want to skate with you.”

Johnathan Cadenhead, sophomore film major, met Waldrop at Welcome Weekend two years ago and was immediately welcomed into the skating community.

“Jackson really encouraged me like, ‘You got that board, you use that board, man,’” Cadenhead says.

Though Cadenhead acknowledges his own lack of skating skill as a new CBU student, he says the nature of the skating culture here, due in part to Waldrop’s — Johnathan attitude, made him unafraid of new challenges.

“Because of how collaborative and encouraging that community was, I wasn’t afraid to go to the skate park with these guys who have been skating for five years or more because I probably have something to learn from them and they’ll probably teach me,” Cadenhead says.

Raymond Alva, freshman photography major, has been skating since he was 5 years old and had a similar experience after meeting Waldrop.

“Jackson and I initially bonded over skating,” Alva says. “Instantly, when I showed up at the skate park, he and a bunch of other people who go to CBU were all there and it was an instant community that we had.”

As the skating community has continued to grow on campus, the familial relationships formed have impacted and shaped skaters’ time at CBU. “For the most part, everyone is Christ-centered and believers, so it’s really cool to see skate culture mixed with Christianity,” Alva says.

“He’s very motivating when you skate with him, which just makes the whole experience better. He definitely knows what he’s talking about,” Alva says.

“Jackson’s a phenomenal skater,” Cadenhead says. “Out of all the skaters at CBU, I would consider him the highest.”

This combination of humility and skill has made Waldrop an asset to the skating community at CBU. From learning to do a handstand on a skateboard at age 8 to one of his most recent successes, learning how to perform a nollie kickflip, Waldrop has maintained an attitude of perseverance and openness.

I

n the streets of major cities and small towns, strangers lurking in the shadows tear apart families, coercing children into working at brick kilns, slaving long hours in the heat of the day. Boys and girls, some as young as 5 years old, are forced to perform sexual acts for cyber users and teenagers are deceived into accepting work in which they ultimately sell their bodies.

This may sound like a problem in developing nations. Except it isn’t.

Human trafficking, also known as modern-day slavery, happens everywhere and can affect anyone. It does not differentiate the rich from the poor, the sick from the well. It is a worldwide, multi-billion-dollar criminal industry carried with the sole intent of exploiting vulnerable individuals, robbing them of their freedom and basic human rights.

International Labour Organization, a United Nations agency whose mandate is to advance social justice, says forced labor and human trafficking refers to any situations in which people are coerced to work through the use of violence, intimidation or by subtler means, such as manipulated debt.

It Can Happen to Anyone Looking through the global lens, modern-day slavery captures public attention and community outcry when injustices of the developing nations are exposed. Many media outlets have covered rescue missions such as the recovery operation of children in Ghana forced to perilously fish through Lake Volta and of young women freed from night brothels in Southeast Asia, heavily affecting how people view human trafficking.

In some ways, it has depicted the crime as an injustice that solely targets poorer nations.

The problem with that mindset, however, is it further exploits those living in underdeveloped conditions simply because they fall closer to poverty.

Brianna,* a survivor of sex trafficking and psychology major at Lee University, says it is imperative that onlookers recognize the reality of in-person trafficking as pervasive crimes that disrupt First-World livelihoods, as well.

“It can happen to anyone,” Brianna says.

“It’s literally happening right under our noses and people just turn a blind eye.

Traffickers aren’t idiots; they know what they’re doing and how to beat the system, and often times, we walk right into their traps unknowingly.”

A Worldwide Problem The undeniable and gripping reality is although human trafficking may appear to be a bigger problem across the developing world, it is also a major First-World issue. How it looks in First-World countries in comparison to developing nations may seem different, but the crime remains the same.

Modern-day slavery, which can take on multiple forms such as sex-trafficking and labor trafficking, has the power to exist in every neighborhood. To correctly understand and tackle such a widespread issue, it must also be challenged in parts of the world that appear to be free of the problem — because chances are they’re not.

The United States — land of the free; home of the brave — is no exception. It was estimated by the Global Slavery Index’s 2018 report that during 2016 more than 400,000 people were living in conditions of modern slavery on any given day and approximately 49,000 cases of trafficking have been reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline within the past 10 years alone.

Danielle Strickland, a leading social justice advocate for the western territory, has spent the last 20 years fighting human trafficking in the United States while regularly visiting women who have been victimized in “the life,” as it is called.8

One of her initiatives, BRAVE Global, strives to empower vulnerable women and girls who’ve been abused, entered foster care and faced trauma — all catalysts of local sex-trafficking rings.

“Most of the women I’ve met on the streets and in the brothels of western cities haven’t come from far away impoverished villages on the other side of the globe, like we so often hear or imagine,” Strickland says.

Her research, along with that of many other smaller grassroots organizations, has shown that modern-day slaves are trapped right here in our own backyards.

Victims can be neighbors, coworkers and even friends, oftentimes trafficked by someone they know, someone they have trusted. Street and indoor prostitution is a serious crime within the United States, affecting hundreds of thousands of individuals, 70–80

percent of which, Strickland says, come from the American foster care system.

Every Story Is Different However, each case story for victims of human trafficking will vary. Madeline MacDonald, communications manager for Dressember Foundation, a nonprofit that uses fashion to spread awareness and dismantle modern-day slavery, says although the term sex-trafficking can be understood by many in one phrase, the experiences and stories of those who have lived through that pain are matchless.

“Every survivor that I meet proves to me that there is no ‘one story’ in regard

to human trafficking,” MacDonald says.

“It’s important to realize that human trafficking situations can look different.”

Victims, whether male or female, are usually manipulated in some way by their perpetrators. It may be with gifts and money; others sometimes are starved and beaten to break down any resilience. It is the perpetrator’s end goal to get their victims in their weakest spot.

Tracy*, another sextrafficking survivor and CBU alumna, says she was initially in love with her trafficker, mistaking his verbal abuse, as many victims do, for words of love and protection.

“He said no one else would ever love me like he did. No one would ever understand me,” Tracy says. “He said he would make sure I never got another job or boyfriend again.”

A Change of Perspective So how did Brianna and Tracy end up trafficked and living out the stories so often only heard of in the rural, remote lands of the earth? How did these American women, both normal college students with normal young adult lives, become the victims of such offense?

It’s not because they were violently kidnapped, or because they suffered the incurable and social repercussions of being impoverished like many movies try to portray. Rather, Brianna and Tracy were trafficked because modern-day slavery has raised its vile head in all places of the world.

Being a well-educated individual protected by First-World laws does not make one immune to the perils of the rest of the world.

Brianna and Tracy’s stories can serve as a reminder to everyone of the power

modern-day slavery is given when people refuse to see it in its entirety.

“Simply recognizing that we’re all vulnerable in some way helps us to connect and find ways to relate to one another and help build each other up so as to prevent those weaknesses from being our downfall,” Tracy says.

Human trafficking is a highly malicious, complex and global issue, causing the deterioration of every person and relationship in its way. Like a predator to its prey, it feeds on the weak. It happens everyday and everywhere in places you couldn’t imagine and to people you would least expect.

That’s the reality. That’s the truth. ◆

wo men wait in a conference room, neither speaking for a solid five minutes. Security guards and officials shuffle in and out to prepare one of the men for his day. Finally, the first man speaks, a warm smile on his face.

“Hello, I’m George (H.W.) Bush,” he says. The other man smiles back. “Yes, Mr. President. I think I know who you are. My name is Michael Elderman and I will be your photographer today.”

That conversation took place in 1992 when President Bush came to Riverside to speak at the Riverside Convention Center as part of a fundraiser for his re-election campaign. Local

photographer Michael Elderman was asked to capture photographs of the president during his visit.

Elderman is many things: a husband, teacher, mentor, friend and an awardwinning photographer. His nickname and social media handle is “The Eyes of Riverside,” a name given to him by an old friend when honoring Elderman for his photographs of the Evergreen Cemetery.

The name reflects his presence at Riverside events and his talent in photography. This name is one many people agree is accurate.

Elderman began his career in photography in 1978 at the University of California,

Riverside. Steven Cahill, a friend of Elderman’s who worked in UCR’s photography lab, suggested they take their beloved hobby and turn it into a professional business.

“We grossed about $10,000 that first year, but when you combine it with all the money you have to put out for equipment and everything, it’s hardly any (money),” Elderman says, “but it was just the first year.”

The duo continued their business for seven years, lasting from ’78-’85. Elderman’s friend decided to release his portion of the business when an offer came for him to teach at a school in Claremont. Elderman purchased complete rights to the business and camera

Heart, Not Just The Camera equipment and continued the business alone.

Though his professional career began in 1978, Elderman’s love for photography began as a young child in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

“When I was a child, I loved to take photographs. I remember one year photographing the Miss America parade when Marilyn Monroe was the grand marshal, and I was really excited for that,” Elderman says.

“My aunt, who was a great woman but did not often have a lot of kind words to say about people, saw the photo and said ‘Hey, that is a really great image.’ So when she said that, I knew I was doing something right.”

Elderman moved to Riverside in 1966 and attended UCR as an English major when he was an undergraduate and then went on to receive his master’s degree in English. Even when he taught English at his alma mater, he says his heart was in photography.

Typically considered an event and commercial photographer, Elderman has taken photos for many clients, including the Riverside County Bar Association, Riverside Chamber of Commerce, California Baptist

University, UCR and Fox Performing Arts Center.

However, he also shoots landscape photography and says both forms show his contrasting personality. Commercial photography lets him be more social, but landscape photography shows a more personal and private side.

“My work is typically more artistic, more artful. But really my work (shows) an appreciation and a love of Riverside,” Elderman says. “I am both a landscape photographer and a commercial one. I love both. The commercial side lets me talk to people which, I love to do — I couldn’t not do that. But my landscape work is quieter and lets me escape the chaos of a city for a while, so I couldn’t not do that either. I really am both.”

Elderman has captured a wide range of people through his career as a photographer, ranging from local politicians, such as Riverside Mayor Rusty Bailey, to other prominent political figures including senators Barbara Boxer and8

Dianne Feinstein. He has photographed four U.S. presidents including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. He has even photographed Coldplay and Chris Rock. His work has been published in newspapers across the nation, including the Los Angeles Times, Herald Examiner and Publishers Weekly.

Despite this success, his most prominent work is within the city of Riverside itself.

Not only is Elderman known as the Eyes of Riverside, but he has built lasting relationships with Riverside’s residents on every level.

People can walk down Market Street or University Avenue with Elderman and locals will wave and say, “Hello Michael,” and he knows them, too. It is a respectful relationship 40 years in the making.

“It is the love of this city, and her people.

It is an energy — the constant changing, improving and the growth of this city — that has kept me photographing this place for the past 40 years,” Elderman says.

Los Angeles native and a long time friend of Elderman, Chuck Spitler, said it is Elderman’s love for the city that makes him stand out.

“Michael is a true professional who is often present at the events and special happenings in and around Riverside. Quite often, our paths cross at these events,” Spitler says. “Over the years, our friendship has grown because of

the humor we share and our mutual interests in the quality of life in Riverside. When you view Michael’s photographs of Riverside and the region, it becomes obvious that he has a sincere passion for the city of Riverside and its people.”

Elderman’s work was published in a book titled “Riverside’s Fox Theater: An Intimate Portrait,” and he now has a permanent display wall at local coffee shop Back to The Grind, which he updates every two months.

Not only has Elderman’s artwork provoked emotions and made lasting impressions on Riverside residents, but it has also served as inspiration to aspiring college photographers.

Chase Kelly, senior public relations major, who shot photos of Elderman for a PR plan, says his work and his personality encompass what she hopes to achieve one day.

“Michael’s photos show a side of Riverside that not many people really see,” Kelly says.

“I like that he doesn’t just shoot photos of Mission Inn or Mount Rubidoux, which is what a lot of people think of when they picture Riverside, but I like that he shows a more personal side, a more real side, and he shoots with his heart, not just his camera.”

Elderman says he has no plans to ever stop his photography. He jokes with his friends that he’ll one day use a walker and attach a tripod to the front of it so he can still do his photography.

“I plan to continue (shooting) until I physically am unable to continue going, until I am too sick and run down to take pictures,” Elderman says, adding, “Even then, who knows.” ◆

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MAN hen the word “gender” comes to mind, it is often thought of as either male or female. However, men and women can be both masculine and feminine. Though women are typically still seen as feminine while exhibiting masculine traits, the same cannot be said for men who exhibit femininity, which can create some problems.

Oftentimes the definition of gender is misconstrued with what is referred to as sex. Gender is different from sex in that it is not as binary, and is seen as a spectrum in which men and women can exhibit both masculine and feminine traits. Sex, on the other hand, relates to biology and refers to anatomical and genetic differences.

Gender is highly shaped by socio-cultural expectations.

What some might consider feminine in one culture may be considered masculine in another. This explains the constant dissonance that often emerges when trying to define gender roles.

Dr. Kathryn Short, professor of education and director of the early childhood studies program, says studies show that children as early as 2 years old are able to accurately label themselves as a boy or girl and begin to gain genderbased activity preferences. From ages 3-6, children begin to stereotype interests, activities and occupations, and from

ages 7-11, their gender identity begins to include gender perceptions while expressing gender contentedness. Short says these roles are learned through socialization, but biology plays a role as well.

“It really is both nature and nurture. Children, for the most part, are highly social and oftentimes their play reflects a gender-bias perspective because a major part of a child’s social and emotional development is the role of imitation,” Short says. “Children observe other children — children of the same sex — and want to emulate that by playing with the same toys and playing the same games.”

Short also says studies show that between the ages 7-11 gender-based behavior continues to strengthen for boys; however, girls may continue to develop and retain an interest in some of the more masculine activities. Women can play sports and have the same jobs as men and can typically still be viewed as being feminine, yet the same cannot be said for men who express feminine traits.

Men who exhibit feminine traits are often seen as weak and sensitive. This can lead to bullying that can be attributed to a term sociologists refer to as “hegemonic masculinity” — a practice that maintains the male species’ dominant position in society and objectively focuses on making the common male and female behavior to appear subordinate.8

Dr. Cynthia Boes, professor of communication studies, teaches gender and communication on campus. She says that for men to remain dominant, they must impose their masculinity on those who lack it.

“Part of having the right to be in control is to reinforce characteristics that are seen as being important and when somebody stray s from that, there may be some danger there,” Boes says.

From the day that boys are able to establish gender roles, they are told to live up to the roles of stereotypical men. Boes says society, family values and the media reinforce these ideas and contribute to toxic masculine traits.

“If men are continually told by their parents, by their schools, by the media that they are supposed to be powerful and supposed to be the ones that take care of everyone, that means they have to be in control of their emotions and they have to be in control of all the situations around them,” Boes says. “They can’t be weak because if they’re weak then they’re not going to be able to be a ‘true man.’

It’s harmful for men, too. It’s not just a problem for women. It’s harmful when they’re not allowed to be true to who they really are.”

It would be an exaggeration to say that males are never allowed to express empathy or compassion, as there are many men who show their feelings and feel comfortable doing so, such as Anthony Maldonado, junior nursing major.

When Maldonado wakes up the morning he says he makes his bed, thanks God for another day, has coffee, if necessary, and heads to Inland Regional Center in his scrubs, where he cares for families with disabled children. Maldonado is a male nursing student and is contributing to the rapidly growing demographic of male nurses in America.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, there are approximately 345,000 registered male nurses in the United States. In comparison, there are nearly 3.5 million registered female nurses. Although male nurses make up roughly 8 percent of the nursing population now, the number has doubled from the 1980s when male nurses accounted for only 4 percent of all registered nurses.

“Nursing is one of those careers that demands a lot of those traits that you’d typically see in women. (Nurses are) caring, compassionate and empathetic,” Maldonado says. “You have to care about the person you’re taking care of. It’s not one of those traits that guys specifically choose to show, but I have encountered those situations where people assume it to be feminine.”

male nurses possess, many face stereotypes that question their masculinity, often in the form of jokes.

“There’s a lot of joking around (about being a male nurse), which is just joking around, but it’s like what they say – every good joke has a grain of truth in it,” Maldonado says. “I feel like the times that other guys have done that to me, usually they’re people who are haters.”

While they may be only jokes, like Maldonado says, there is some truth behind them. In relation to hegemonic masculinity, the jokes are often used in ways to emasculate men who express feminine characteristics. This hegemony creates an impossible standard for males to abide by and in turn may create toxic behavior in the form of bullying, physical and sexual abuse and discrimination.

These behaviors are used to subdue not only other men but women, as well.

Short says these gender traits are largely because of biological makeup, but society has been pushing for males to be more open with their emotions.

“Boys are taught at an early age ‘rough and tumble’ play. Just by the nature of a boy’s physique versus a girl’s, they are stronger and can be more physically dominant,” Short says. “I honestly think this is changing. Both males and females are openly displaying their emotions and parents are encouraging showing emotions. It is not uncommon to see boys and men cry.”

Boes says she agrees that societal expectations of men are changing, but because of the growing awareness, it has created a causality, inviting a growth in the opposition.

“It’s becoming really polarized. There’s a larger group of men who are more aware that they don’t have to be aggressive to be a good man,” Boes says. “That group of men is growing, but because of that, there are men on the other side who are still following the idea that a man is supposed to be powerful and strong. There is no vulnerability allowed there.”

Allowing men to be vulnerable, see gender as a spectrum and embrace their masculine and feminine traits is a healthy combatant against hegemonic masculinity. Hegemony is a complex social construct that has been ingrained, institutionalized and has become a sometimes subconscious act in society. However, by being able to identify toxic traits that may be created when vulnerability is suppressed, young boys can learn more positive methods to handle their emotions and not see femininity as a weakness, but a strength that can make them into even stronger men. ◆

desert x DESERT X

what you missed at the famed coachella valley exhibition

by Lauren Sawdey esert X, an outdoor art exhibition sprawled over 50 miles of the Coachella Valley, made its second appearance this spring. Attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers, Desert X has carved a global reputation for itself.

Open to the public from late February through mid-April, this year’s iteration included installations by 19 leading local and global artists.

Artistic director Neville Wakefield and curators Matthew Shum and Amanda Hunt thoughtfully focused the site-specific exhibition on the changing desert landscape.

The installations have brought environmental issues to the forefront, opening discussion on the shrinking Salton Sea, climate change, the hope of refugees, and the shifting nature of borders, specifically the U.S.-Mexico border. Other works highlight the culture and history of the region’s indigenous people and even recognize Palm Springs’ famed mid-century modern architecture.

superflex Tall against the mountains of the desert stood Dive-In, an expansive pink structure created by Danish collective Superflex.

Giving history to the name behind the Coachella Valley, Superflex notes how a mispelling changed the orginial name from Conchilla, meaning “little shell” — a name dubbed by early Spanish settlers who discovered an abundance of fossilized marine life in the desert region.

In keeping with the history, the Danish

collective chose to highlight the drastic changes the desert has gone through, saying that what had once been underwater was now stripped by an arid landscape. Dive-In represents the exploration of geological history, global warming and rising water levels. The geometric architecture, which mimicked the look and texture of coral, was created under the idea that the structure would be appealing to human and marine life, as if it had been underwater so many years ago.

Lover’s Rainbow, a two-site installation set in the Coachella Valley and Baja, Mexico, was an identical pair of rainbows shaped from painted rebar. The bending of the rebar structure signaled a replanting of hope into the land, while the rainbow itself stood as a symbol of hope and fertility. A native of Mexico, Pia Camil created this installation to highlight the role of the rainbow in re-establishing hope and inclusiveness against current immigration policies. The location of the set of rainbows was designed in such a way that viewers would be pressed to expand their perspectives on such issues, seeing the symbolism behind the connectedness of the separated rainbows.

sterling ruby

Sterling Ruby’s SPECTER, a vivid orange monolithic structure, stood in eye-catching contrast to the stark desert landscape surrounding it. The minimalist form blended the lines of the structure with the mountain terrain behind it, allowing for the color to become the main attraction.

Appearing as an optical illusion, the composite shape reflected the form of a shipping container, military bunker or even an abandoned homestead. The outstanding color highlighted the reversal of ideas regarding orange as a traditional color of warning or safety, with the structure instead being set apart from the desert environment, hiding in plain sight.

Revolutions nancy baker cahill As part of a multiple-site installation, Revolutions explored augmented reality with colorful, explosive animations overlooking a wind farm in north Coachella Valley just outside of Palm Springs.

Inspired by augmented and virtual reality, Los Angeles-based artist Nancy Baker Cahill utilized these influences in her work to allude to the capturing of energy among the surrounding windmills.

Through the lens of a smartphone, and utilizing the Fourth Wall app, the installation thrusted the fluid, interactive sculptures onto the surrounding landscape.

Because of the ever-changing conditions of the desert, the moving art produced a special experience for each viewer. â—†

rowth. That is what any member of The Color Society will tell you characterizes their band. Despite having already released an EP and a single, the band insists it has all been for the purpose of finding their sound.

Local indie band, The Color Society, started

by Daniel Shrader, junior psychology major, began with a simple flyer advertised in a music shop. When Shane Teague, a 19-year-old musician local to Riverside, found the flyer the pair hit the ground running. Their alt-pop sound has found inspiration from bands such as The Beatles, Real Estate and Turnover.

“We just started writing together and found that we had all of the same influences. We loved the same kind of music and wanted to make a similar kind of music,” Shrader says. “I initially started (the band) but ever since I found Shane,

he has been a huge driving force behind the band. It’s been 50/50 ever since we found each other.”

An Outlet for Self-Expression Both Shrader and Teague point to music as an important outlet and tool of self-expression, noting how influential the art form can be for each of them.

“It’s a very powerful medium … You can communicate stories and relate to people in a way you can’t do with many other things,” Teague says. “It really does break barriers.”

With this passion and vision in mind, they created the band’s first EP, “Coastal Visions.” It became a collaboration between Shrader and

Teague who wrote, played and sang all four songs themselves. These four songs were their proof of concept, a way to show others what they were trying to do and bring new members to the band.

Join The Band Soon after releasing the EP, they found guitarist Isaiah Sanchez, a high school student at Orange County School of the Arts.

Sanchez says he believes joining The Color Society became a way to continue honing his skill and passion for music.

“Growing up being a quieter kid, music was always a way for me to express myself,” Sanchez says.

After recruiting a bassist, it was time to start working on their next big project – another EP, consisting of four more songs that would embody what the band hopes to be. Shrader and Teague began the arduous process of writing

more songs, presenting them to the band and recording. Over the course of eight months, the band turned Shrader’s home into a studio, using any piece of the home that could provide the best sound for their new music. Each and every song was recorded with their own sound equipment, things all bought or put together by the band members themselves.

This new DIY studio was a step up from the recording of their last EP, which all occurred in the cramped space of Shrader’s bedroom, which he notes is crowded even without music equipment. Even more unorthodox, their single, “Starlet,” was created in the bathroom of a neighbors house for better sound quality. Ever the dedicated artists, they shoved amps against the cool tile in order to make the best music possible. Listening to this track, it would be impossible to tell that it was made with the help of bathroom acoustics.

band to complete their new EP. “Being able to do everything DIY was super cool,” Shrader says. “It’s a very tedious process but at the same time you’re not paying for the studio so you can live in the studio and go the extra mile to make everything perfect.”

Using this makeshift home workspace, the band would play songs over and over again to make sure they had made each and every piece sound exactly right through their collaborative writing process.

Creative Freedom The band is a point of collaboration with no one reigning as the owner of any particular song. Each member of the band is free to suggest changes or tweaks that will be attempted and evaluated.

“Part of the reason we can function so well is because we have an understanding that none of us are bringing our egos to the table,” Shrader says. “Our only goal when we come together as a band is to make good music.”

This attitude of humility allows the band to continually inspire one another to try new things and push the envelope with what they play.

the EP, Isaiah would record something very safe and we’d be like, ‘Dude, go hard. Turn on your amp.’” Shrader says.

They all agree one of Sanchez’s best guitar solos came out of this mentality, their willingness to challenge one another and collaborate on every aspect of the music elevating each song.

A Family Affair While the EP is now completed, new bassist and cousin to Shrader, Nathan Shrader, has only just joined the group in January. As one of the first people to hear the new songs, Nathan Shrader says he looks forward to creating the same kind of music with them soon.

“It’s something I am personally really excited for in the future — just writing with these guys,” Nathan Shrader says.

As The Color Society looks toward the future, Daniel Shrader’s father, Mark Shrader, is one person to whom they all say they owe so much. Mark Shrader has been a creative influence on Daniel Shrader for his entire life — the band name even is a reference to his father’s first band back in the ’80s.

“My dad’s first band when he was in high school was called Color,” Daniel Shrader says.

“It was something that we liked, and thought was appropriate for the music and a call back to my dad because he has always been a musical inspiration for me.”

In fact, the entire band refers to Mark Shrader as “our dad” as he has helped them through every step of the music-making process. With his help, they all know this is the best music they have made yet.

“Especially when it comes to music, you’re always going to be your own worst critic, but this is something even I can look at and say, ‘Wow this is really good.’ It’s the best thing I’ve ever been a part of,” Teague says.

This next EP is the first tangible thing that has exhibited the sound the band was striving for, says Daniel Shrader, acknowledging the trajectory of growth and change they have been on since Teague first picked up that flyer.

As their new EP released on March 15, the future looks bright for The Color Society. Get ready to become a fan because, as Shrader puts it, “We’re only going to get better from here.” ◆

Korean and Mexican flavors combine at this favorite fusion-style restaurant. Since its inception in 2011, Kimchichanga has been a local hot-spot among university students and the Downtown Riverside workforce.

Offering true fusion cuisine, the restaurant uses kimchi (Korean spicy, pickled cabbage) and bulgogi (thin-sliced steak) as two main staples in their perfected recipes.

The Kimchichanga — the namestake dish of the eatery — is a new style on the classic deepfried version that includes a rolled tortilla stuffed with kimchi, beans and kalbi, covered with spicy mayo and sriracha sauces.

The bold, colorful decor echoes the flavorful and eclectic food pairings that make for an authentic, lively dining experience unlike many others.

This is not your typical cinnamon-roll dessert shop. First open in 2010 in Downtown Berkeley, Calif., Cinnaholic was born from the co-founders’ shared passion for eating a plant-based diet.

Transforming that passion into baking, Shannon and Florian Radke created the concept for their dessert shop - gourmet vegan cinnamon rolls. The scratch-made products accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions and lifestyles, using 100 percent vegan, dairy and lactose-free, egg-free and cholesterol-free ingredients.

A combination of their menu — bowls, cups and pops — Bolcupop is a trending shop that offers a fresh take on acai bowls, also including aguas frescas and popsicles.

Entrepreneur Sallimar Lorenzana, a Corona native who began selling acai bowls through her own food truck and delivery business, is now a tenant at the Riverside Food Lab. After trying an acai bowl for the first time while training Jiu Jitsu with her brothers, Sallimar realized she could take an otherwise basic bowl and add her personal twist — thus creating Bolcupop along the way.

The bowls include a variety of base flavors and toppings, such as handcrafted and dailymade sorbet, watermelon and taro. If you’re looking to diverge from a more traditional acai bowl, opt for the corn bowl, which includes sweet corn tossed in mayo and topped with cojita cheese, tajin chili powder and more.
