EDITOR’S NOTE

U

pon returning to CBU from Christmas break, I found a medium-sized, white box sitting on my desk with a beautiful ceramic coffee mug inside — one of my favorite things to collect. My roommates took a trip to Australia, remembered my obsession with coffee mugs and brought back the perfect souvenir for me.

I lovingly put it on display next to a set of books on my desk, thankful for my roommates’ thoughtfulness and impressed by their expertise in choosing exactly what I would want.

Unfortunately, the books didn’t have as much reverence for this cup as I, so when they, in a domino-like effect, collectively tipped over, the mug I had for all but 24 hours toppled off the table and onto the floor. There were casualties.

The handle of the mug broke off into five, sad little pieces.

I was heartbroken. The books had tipped over plenty of times before and yet I still placed my new mug in a spot for which it was clearly not suited. My

only two options were to hop on a plane and fly to Australia for a new one or get some super glue and put the pieces back together.

As I evaluated the situation, it looked simple. But the task of fitting each piece together like they were part of an intricately planned puzzle was more tedious than I had originally expected.

I hoped each piece would naturally fit together until I realized one missing sliver of broken mug threw off the entire fitting.

Or that one missing piece left a chuck of unpolished ceramic staring at me, teasing me for my clumsiness.

And that seems to be how a lot of situations turn out, don’t they? Sometimes we believe our lives will fit perfectly with the plans we’ve created since say, childhood. Or maybe we expect to implement plans made at the start of the year and then by February realize nothing is as expected. A career, hobby, romance, material possessions. Plans break, change and evolve and we are left trying to

squeeze new ones into our life.

After gluing pieces back together, I’ve come to realize I can’t plan my future in that first evaluation, when I thought everything would be simple. There’s no doubt that we will be broken at times.

Maybe we will put ourselves in places not suited for us with plans for a future that don’t fit.

Luckily, God holds those broken parts we try so hard to piece back together and gives us ones that fit better. He gives us promise that our previous intentions will be delicately replaced with something lovely.

And it’s always for the best possible good.

So it’s a new year with plenty of new plans and pieces of our lives that we think will undoubtedly fit. When they do, rejoice!

We will rejoice with you. When they don’t, take a breath, look forward and realize there is a small ceramic piece, perfectly crafted to fit your previously broken handle.

why can’t we be FRIENDS?

LIKE ANYTHING WORTH HAVING, FRIENDSHIPS INVOLVE TIME, EFFORT AND INTENTIONALITY TO THRIVE.

B

uzz and Woody. Monica and Rachel.

Frodo and Sam. These iconic duos may not be real people, but they represent something to which each of us can relate: friendship.

We all have a mental check-list of what makes a quality friend. Sam’s fierce loyalty to Frodo, Rachel and Monica’s unfailing honesty with each other and Buzz and Woody’s ability to appreciate each other’s differences are qualities that make them memorable, lovable and people we consider to be best friends.

If we have the ability to recognize quality friendship and, therefore, the understanding of how to be a quality friend, why do so many people struggle to make deep, lasting friendships with one another?

Because we forget we must work for it like we work for anything else we want — with intention. Although we know what has to be done, it is impossible as

an imperfect human to be constantly selfless, uplifting, reliable, supportive and available for every person we consider a friend. True friendship takes quality time and effort to grow and maintain the spiritual accountability, constructive honesty, and emotional balance that are part of a healthy relationship.

Kayla North, senior nursing major at California Baptist University, learned the importance of intentionality in her friendships the hard way. When she graduated high school, she and her closest friend chose to attend colleges on opposite ends of California. After meeting through mutual friends in high school, they connected over their love of sports and opened up to each other about personal aspects of their lives. However, once college began, they drifted apart.

“She became a back-burner person for me (unintentionally),” North says.

North’s friend reached out, telling her she did not want their friendship to fade.

North says she made a conscious effort to talk to her friend, arrange visits and to be there for her once again. Because of that, she and her friend are closer than ever.

“We both feel open enough with each other to call each other out if we are making stupid life choices, and we know that it is done out of love and care for each other,” North says, adding that “I learned great qualities to look for in friends by knowing her.”

Confronting our friends isn’t easy, but it adds depth and value to a friendship. A friend like that is a treasure that should not be taken for granted.

Like a treasure, these friends are sometimes found in unexpected places, such as the dorms — the setting of far too many horror stories about crazy roommates who never shower or who leave their toenail collection out on display. Sometimes in those cramped rooms, though, lifelong and seemingly unbreakable bonds can form.

Ashley Hoppes, senior marketing major, and Emily Jenkins, senior nursing major, moved into their Simmons Hall dorm room at CBU their freshman year as complete strangers. Three and a half years later, they are not only roommates but the best of friends.

Their college memories have woven together in many ways with exploits ranging from movie nights and giggling in their room as they fall asleep to trips to Starbucks in their matching onesie pajamas to gallivanting across Europe together over spring break. The pair

agrees their college experience would be severely lacking if it were not for their friendship. And their friendship is built on more than just the fun times they have experienced together.

“She keeps me grounded and points me back to Christ,” Hoppes says. “No matter where life takes us, I know we will always be best friends.”

It is natural for relationships to go through times of hardship, but the test of a true friend is whether or not they are willing to work through it. These times of contention, if handled appropriately, can lead to the strengthening of a friendship strong enough to stand the test of time.

“If we aren’t making an effort to be real friends, relationships will become stagnant and never blossom into true, deep friendships,” Jenkins says.

The support a friend offers — whether in the form of a well-timed hug, a knowing look or a shoulder to cry on — is essential in the puzzle of the human experience.

Developing an intentional relationship means being in tune with the needs and emotions of friends. That effort allows a person to know exactly when a kind word or hug is needed, even without any mention of it.

The worth of a genuine friendship is immeasurable. The intentionality required of a true friend is something that does not come easily, but the reward gained from the time, effort, laughter, tears and sacrifice that go into a sincere friendship is something worth seeking. Although these relationships are delicate and rare, we can all find our Buzz, Monica or Sam.

NOT HAVING A CELLPHONE IN MY POCKET HELPED ME MAKE THE MOST OF THE MOMENTS IN FRONT OF ME. Seven days sans smartphone left me with 92 unread text messages, 13 missed calls, 15 unopened Snapchats and 67 unread emails. After owning a cellphone since I was 13, I knew going a week without it would be strange but what surprised me was just how dependent I have become on the simplicity my phone brings to my life.

For an entire week I was only able to use my cellphone as if it were a landline at my apartment. Other than the occasional phone call, which I made from my apartment, my iPhone sat untouched on my dresser all week. Here are a few of the realizations I came to throughout those seven long days.

DIGITAL ALARM CLOCKS ARE OUTRAGEOUSLY COMPLICATED. It takes me roughly five seconds to set an alarm on my iPhone before going to sleep. Don’t double, or triple, or even quadruple that number, but multiply it by about 30 — that’s how long it took me to set an alarm on the digital alarm clock I had to use all week. Because I was never able to decipher how to turn the alarm off, I was forced to unplug the alarm clock each morning to get it to stop yelling at me. That seemed like a valid solution until I had to spend five minutes every night resetting both the time and alarm. Putting the alarm clock at the back of my closet, hoping I would never have to use it again, was the highlight of my week.

IT IS AMAZING HOW MUCH YOU LEARN IN CLASS WITHOUT A PHONE TO DISTRACT YOU. Just like the rest of the responsible students at CBU, I never have my phone out during class. I certainly never find myself scrolling through Instagram, sending unbelievably attractive Snapchats

or making lunch plans via text. As I went through my first week of classes without a phone, I was shocked to realize how much of a distraction that phone had actually been in the past. Rather than only halflistening to my professors, I was able to really be present and engage in lectures.

MEMORIZING PHONE NUMBERS IS A LOST ART. How many phone numbers do you know by heart? My answer: zero. The only phone numbers I can rattle off the top of my head are my home phone number, which my family discontinued more than half a decade ago, and my nextdoor neighbor’s phone number, which I haven’t called since I was in sixth grade.

If I needed to borrow someone’s phone to make a call during the week, I would have been completely out of luck.

THREE AND A HALF YEARS LATER, I STILL DON’T KNOW MY WAY AROUND RIVERSIDE. Without Siri politely telling me when and where to turn, the chance of me getting lost around Riverside was almost guaranteed. Although I could successfully get to places I frequently visit, the few times I ventured off to new locations required an extra 15 minutes of driving to make up for my subpar sense of direction.

I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE ATTACHED TO MY CELLPHONE. On multiple occasions, I found myself being the only person in the group not on a cellphone. How often do we see an entire table at Brisco’s completely ignoring one another, eyes glued to cellphone screens?

Not having my phone allowed me to better interact with the people around me.

Looking back on my week, the word that best describes my experience is “free.”

The first couple days I felt anxious without my phone wondering who had texted me and what else I was missing. In a sense, I had to relearn how to be an adult — someone who can read a map, keep a schedule and hold a conversation with an acquaintance without defaulting to the natural crutch our phones have become.

After the first few days were out of the way, I almost forgot I needed it. Not having a cellphone in my pocket helped me make the most of the moments in front of me.

There are luxuries I missed. Yes, I’m talking about that alarm clock. While my phone simplifies my life in many ways, it’s not something on which I need to depend.

Maybe accidentally leaving your cellphone at home every once in a while isn’t a bad thing at all.

Knowing and understanding love languages helps California Baptist University students strengthen relationships with family, friends and significant others.

cts of service, quality time, words of affirmation, physical touch and gifts. To some, these may be random phrases but for those who can identify with one, these words mean love.

Love languages, developed by Dr. Gary Chapman, senior associate pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in North Carolina with a doctorate in adult education, describe the ways individuals best receive and express love. Chapman’s book, “The 5 Love Languages,” includes an extensive test that diagnoses which love language, or languages, pertains to the test-taker.

Andrea Gonzales, junior marketing major, learned her love language was quality time in a condensed version of the official test.

“Although I always knew I enjoyed spending time with others, it was never really clear to me until now,” Gonzales says. “It helped me unravel myself and my preferences instead of focusing on (the preferences of ) others.”

Understanding your own interpretation of the love language that describes you best is key to finding the most rewarding way to feel loved by others.

“I tend to find compassion in the form of adventuring with people I love, both mentally and physically,” Gonzales says. “You will never find me in a personal relationship with another (person) unless we interact in some sort of physical activity or mental breakdown of each other’s thoughts, one-on-one, face-to-face.”

Brandi Plata, senior communication disorders major, also has quality time as her love language and says if we all knew each other’s love language, we could better approach and connect with people when they need someone to build them up.

Nothing builds up Bryce Suyenaga, junior public relations major, more than love in the form of words of affirmation.

“I like getting compliments and having people encourage me,” Suyenaga says. “It makes me feel valued and know others notice and care for me.”

Nick Worrell, sophomore Christian studies major, learned one of his love languages includes reception of acts of service.

“Acts of service express to me that they genuinely care and are willing to go the extra mile to help or serve me,” Worrell says.

Some may feel self-conscious about having gifts as their love language, but for Logan McGown, sophomore civil engineering major, the love for receiving gifts is a misunderstood concept.

“The love language of gifts has a connotation of selfishness, however, I’ve come to see how what is assumed isn’t always true,” McGown says. “I appreciate the things people go out of their way to surprise me with. Whether it is a card or a larger present, gifts with intention behind them make me feel valued.”

Taylor Schram-Bishop, senior psychology major, says it is extremely meaningful when someone shows he or she cares for her according to her love language, physical touch, especially with her fiancé.

Test results of the love language not only apply to relationships with significant others, but are applicable in every type of relationship.

It is equally important to show and receive love through love languages with family. For SchramBishop this comes in the form of snuggling with her younger sister while watching movies and receiving “bear” hugs from her father.

Love languages are not only helpful in knowing how to be intentional with others but are beneficial in understanding why you are drawn to certain people and the way they interact with you.

“Love languages should not only be used for the search of potential ‘wifeys’ or ‘hubbys,’ but more for your personal well-being,” Gonzales says.

“Your love language should be applied to everyone because, in the end, it is only going to make your heart happier by welcoming in the select few who catch your attention by the preferred attention they give you.”

WHICH LOVE

LANGUAGE ARE YOU? Whether it’s binge-watching Netflix, exploring a place you’ve never been before or having a valuable conversation, little is more fulfilling than receiving undivided attention from those you love. Spending uninterrupted time with those you love is crucial in filling up your love tank.

A warm hug, a back scratch while watching TV, or holding hands makes your heart melt. Nothing shows your loved ones care for you more than physical contact. When someone you care about sits close to you, it demonstrates they love you — no words needed.

You love when people speak up. Being recognized for an accomplishment or hearing you are appreciated means everything to you. This love language is about knowing how a person feels about you; being reminded of that connection warms you up inside.

You don’t need to be showered with presents — just the thought behind the gift is key. It means the world to you when someone doesn’t just give you a gift card for your birthday but takes the time to give a gift that is meaningful to you.

What’s even more meaningful is receiving a gift when there’s no occasion.

Actions speak louder than words, especially if this is your love language.

When someone you love takes the time to help with dishes or helps you process through a tough decision, this shows you that you matter to them. Doing things for you with a positive attitude — and without being asked — makes you feel cherished.

The Van Buren Swap Meet has something for everyone. The incredible variety of items sold there is almost overwhelming for shoppers. From fresh produce and flowers to power tools and toilet paper, the swap meet has just about anything one

could need at a bargain price. Three Pursuit writers set out to the swap meet on a Saturday morning with $20 each and one mission — to spend all the money on the most ridiculous items they could find in only one hour.

ever in my life would I have guessed I would own a $7 umbrella purchased from a man also selling truck tires and a pile of machetes. With its interesting variety of items and random interactions of shopping through other people’s stuff, the swap meet is basically the perfect place to dish out $20.

My primary function walking through the market was just to get myself a decent churro and meet a nice fruit cart man to share anecdotes with. That all changed once we parked and walked up to the rows of tents. I was distracted by just about anything that caught my eye. Everyone seemed to be rocking the whistle/fruity bubble necklace that day, so with the desire to blend in, I bought one for $1.

as their children are willing to translate.

I did not find my nice fruit cart man, but instead an intimidating fruit queen bee who conducted her fruit booth with the help of her husband and six grandchildren.

Any vegetarian’s dream, the swap meet’s fresh veggie options were endless. However, I had to give into the nostalgia of my childhood snack of Fuyu persimmons (aka pee kakis for my Japanese peeps) for two pounds for only $1.

My experience would not have been completed without my Fishy bubble gun decked out with a flashlight and musical feature that played The Sound of Music’s “The Lonely Goatherd.” For the bargain price of $5, I have the infinite power to bring joy to young children and blast all of my worries away to a funky beat – batteries included.

or less than $15, I picked up six different items that are both funny and practical. I found a quality loofah with durable rope and excellent exfoliation capabilities for only $2.

A whole booth was dedicated to comic books, where I found a Marvel Avengers comic book for 50 cents. Most of the comic books were anywhere from 50 cents to $2. I don’t even collect comic books.

When I’m trying to stay hydrated, I tend to look for bigger straws and I found a 50 pack of boba straws for $2. They were even individually wrapped so there is no worry about contamination of other straws when your friend tries to grab one out but touches every straw possible.

For a reasonable $3 I stumbled upon a Santa Biblia that I couldn’t pass up. I don’t speak or read Spanish well enough for this to benefit me but it was a quality purchase nonetheless.

There are a lot of cellphone accessory booths at this swap meet, and at the rate I go through iPhone chargers, it was wise for me to buy a new one. I picked up a Hello Kitty light-up lightening bolt charger for $5, easily making it my favorite purchase. It’s genius — no one will steal it.

“No, Matt, this is definitely my Hello Kitty charger.” Nice try, pal.

Lastly, the lawn art really spoke to me. At first I didn’t think this fist-sized crab with little legs attached by springs was for sale. Lucky for me, it was only $2.

nlike some, I didn’t sacrifice quality for quantity during my swap meet shopping experience. I may have gotten fewer items than the others but rest assured, my most valued purchase, a toy bubble gun for $5, will last me decades of fun. I kid you not, it is the coolest little toy I’ve ever bought. It lights up and shoots bubbles like nobody’s business. It needed batteries, though, so I made sure to pick up a pack (for only $1!) from the same stall.

I wandered the swap meet fruitlessly waiting for my next purchase to jump out at me – and it literally did. Balthazar, as he was soon dubbed, is a walking Tyrannosaurus rex with wings on its back.

Another $5 later, I got to take him home with me. Never mind that the little stick that made him walk fell off 30 seconds away from the stall where I purchased him.

My last purchase was probably the most difficult for me. I had $9 left and our time was almost up. I needed to find something and fast. Then I saw it, discreetly lurking on a table with dozens of its kind – a child-sized, homemade beanie made to look like a minion from the animated film “Despicable Me.” Want to guess how much it cost? Just $8 – hey, big spender.

How to Find, Get and Keep AN INTERNSHIP

ollege internships can take on many forms and can make students fall in, or out, of love with their majors. With so many choices, finding the right internship can be daunting, but with the right research it does not have to be impossible.

The first step is making sure to plan ahead.

Chelsea Royse, associate director of the Career Center, says students should start looking at least six months in advance. Athletes or students busy during the fall and spring semesters may want to consider summer internships.

“Students don’t understand the value of doing an internship and how valuable internships are,” Royse says. “Resumes are just one little piece of the puzzle. I would love students to get experience.”

Once timing has been taken into account, Royse recommends students use all available resources. Many major companies have internship opportunities posted on their websites and credible search engines such as internmatch.com can also help the internship hunt.

When it comes to securing an internship, draft resumes directed toward the specific position for which you’re applying. Research the position and the company before the interview. It doesn’t

hurt to have a solid answer to the notorious “tell us about yourself ” question that opens most interviews.

“Sixty-seven percent of hiring bosses say they know within the first 90 seconds if they’re going to hire you,” Royse says.

Professionalism is another thing that will help students grab and keep internships. Treat it as a job, regardless if there is a paycheck involved or not. Besides, some companies have opportunities that lead to paid internships down the road.

“This is the opportunity to test drive your career,” Royse says. “The reputation you gain now is hugely important. It’s definitely a mutual exchange, but there are some employers who will invest in you. You want to make sure you show gratitude in that.”

Alecia Gage, senior early childhood studies major, exemplifies how an internship can lead to opportunities, even if it no longer applies to a student’s major. Gage’s internship focused on what she thought was going to be her future career: mechanical engineering.

When Gage changed her major, the company kept her in the same position and gave her more responsibility including training a new employee.

If there is a specific company you dream of interning for, first look up their internship program. Next, call their offices to see if they have internships or if shadowing is an option. You never know if you don’t ask, so never be afraid to make a phone call.

“I started out as the newest intern, and I have worked my way up to the head of the project,” Gage says. “This has helped me learn new skills like management, communication, prioritization and time-management. Moving my way up through the company was definitely not what I expected when I first started.”

Adam Vergara, senior biology major, found an internship that gave applicable hospital experience as a clinical care extender at COPE Health Solutions through a CBU internship fair. For Vergara, his internship’s unpredictable shifts helped assure biology is the major for him.

“One day you may only restock shelves and take a few vitals,” Vergara says. “Another day you may walk into a trauma in the Emergency Room. A nice thing about this internship is the degree of freedom the internship allows because you are not only allowed to take vitals and interact with patients, but you can also witness surgeries and other medical procedures.”

Having the chance to see things that apply to a student’s field is invaluable. Internships add real-life experience to resumes that will be helpful later on in a student’s career. Even internships that show students what they do not want or intend to do can help them plan ahead for their future career and should be utilized whenever they are available.

arely knowing each other as you walk down the aisle – arranged marriages were the norm around the world until the 18th century, and they still exist in some countries.

As the world of marriage evolved, courtship came into play. Men and women went on dates to get to know each other before entering into romantic relationships.

Once again, the dating world has changed and many couples experience an entirely new and distinct world of dating: the online world.

As technology continues to intertwine itself in people’s lives, it’s no surprise the Web has become a major player in social interactions. Online dating has not only become a common means of meeting someone, but also a successful dating medium for many Americans.

Last year, the Pew Research Center found that one in 10 Americans, most of whom are in their mid-20s to mid-40s, use online dating services. Other statistics report sites such as eHarmony, Match.com, Plenty of Fish and OkCupid are responsible for connecting as much as 20 percent of couples today.

Now the third most common way to meet someone, right behind mutual acquaintances and work or school,

online dating has forever changed the dating scene. While research on the topic is sometimes dubious at best, it doesn’t take a complicated algorithm to see that online dating is all around.

“The trend is not going to go away,” says Marilyn Moore, associate professor of behavioral sciences at California Baptist University. “From a social scientist’s perspective, the number of arenas where you can find a potential mate has become so small that if you don’t turn to some kind of technological way of connecting with people, you stand a chance of not being able to find somebody.”

For many, there is a sense of safety and comfort behind a computer screen.

It eliminates the stress some feel when meeting face-to-face and allows them to be matched with individuals with similar personalities, interests and beliefs.

“It’s easier to meet people online because you have time to think about what you’re going to say rather than the nervousness that most men get meeting a girl for the first time,” says Joseph Gonzalez, sophomore Christian studies and Christian behavioral science double major.

The average user on Tinder, a common dating app in the college demographic, spends 77 minutes a day in the app, scrolling through profiles and connecting with other users.

Gonzalez is not the only Lancer to utilize technology in his personal life.

For CBU students Jacob Fry, senior kinesiology major, and Robyn Fry, senior psychology major, Facebook allowed them to connect months before meeting in person.

After being connected by a mutual friend, the two seniors utilized sites such as Facebook and Skype to create a base of Continued on Page 24

Avoid Getting CATFISHED 1. Be Cautious

On the Internet you must be mindful of everything you do, especially when trying to meet your soulmate. If you are not being cautious, the Internet may not be the best place for you.

2. Give ‘Em the Old Google

Don’t be afraid to look up your virtual “friend” on Google or social media sites to make sure he or she is real. Many online dating websites will ask to link your profile and Facebook account. If the profile is not linked, maybe he or she doesn’t want you to see what he or she has on Facebook, such as a wife or husband, children and a golden retriever.

3. ‘Stalk’ Them

Once you have made a connection with that person, don’t be ashamed to keep tabs on them (but not in a crazy way). If they tell you they’re flying to Seattle, Washington, on a business trip but Facebook checks them in at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, that’s not cool.

4. Don’t Disclose Too Much, Too Soon

You don’t have to tell your online romance every single thing about yourself — especially not right away. If they are willing to learn about you slowly, they are looking for something more serious than just a fling.

5. Get Face-to-Face

Once you have found a person you are interested in, FaceTime or Skype them at least three times before meeting in person. It’s definitely a red flag if they don’t want to FaceTime or Skype.

friendship, which eventually led them to the altar in 2014.

“I’d call it love at first Skype,” Jacob says. “In our case, Facebook was a means of connecting and getting to know each other really well.”

Although the two first connected through the Internet, Jacob says that, for them, they didn’t call it “dating” until they went on a real-life date.

“After our first Skype session, I knew he was the man of my dreams,” Robyn says. “Later, after our first date, I realized he would be the one I was going to marry.”

The Frys are not the only couple their age who owe their successful relationship to technology, but its widespread implications on the ability to connect remain to be seen.

“If you really think about how much time we spend on (cellphones) and on (computers), we’re losing the ability to critically listen to one another,” Moore says. “That’s going to have a profound effect on how we connect with one another.”

Has online dating changed the way we think of dating? Of course, but the Pew Research Center also found that, despite the definite uptick in Internet dating, most couples in committed relationships for five years or less reported meeting each other for the first time in person.

The moral there might be to keep your eyes off your screen long enough to see what — or who — is right in front of you, but there’s no reason to slight social media’s potential in the dating world.

THINGS TO DO SEDONA HAS ITS FAIR SHARE OF INTENSE HIKES, BUT MOST HIKES ARE MILD TO MEDIUM INTENSITY AND AVERAGE TWO TO THREE MILES. WILSON CANYON Wilson Canyon has stunning views north of Sedona and offers a mild hike on well-maintained trails. Directly off AZ-89, this trail also offers spectacular views of Midgley Bridge, as well as the red rock mountains that engulf the city.

CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CROSS Chapel of the Holy Cross is a 70-foot-tall Roman Catholic church in the side of a 1,000-foot red-sandstone mountain. From the top of the church are views of Cathedral and Bell Rock, as well as south Sedona. To get there, take AZ-179 south and turn left onto Chapel Road.

Munson is an avid hiker and has given hiking tours in Sedona. Her dog Jeff accompanies her on most of her adventures.

“I love hiking all over Sedona,” Munson says.

“But it was Cathedral Rock that became my first favorite hike. You really can’t go wrong with any hike here. It just depends on what type of hike you want on that particular day.”

THE BALDWIN TRAIL The Baldwin Trail runs in two directions that lead to some of the best views. Head south of Sedona on AZ-179 to the outskirts of town and make a right on Verde Valley School Drive.

Follow the dirt road to the Baldwin trail head where this hike begins. Open fields lead to narrow trails of rich, red soil that have striking views of both Oak Creek and Cathedral Rock. This trail is mild but has some parts that are more of a climb.

RED ROCK CROSSING Red Rock Crossing is a major attraction for those looking for a perfect view of Cathedral Rock and its reflection in Oak Creek. This specific area is one of the most photographed locations in Sedona and reveals the most breath-taking views of the area.

Take AZ-89 south toward West Sedona and make a left turn at Upper Red Rock Loop. At the fork turn left onto Chavez Ranch Road and then a right on Red Rock Crossing.

Three CBU affiliates involved in “Les Miserables” have each had their own unique journey that brought them to the stage.

Pauline attributes his theater career and beliefs to the support of an “army” of friends and family to back him in all he has done.

“I am currently successful in my career due to the support of my friends, theater mentors and especially my parents,” Pauline says. “I am fortunate to have such supportive parents. They would drive me to school, which was about 30 miles away from our hometown, just because I wanted to study theater.”

Vasile considers “Les Miserables” a great opportunity after graduating from CBU in spring 2014, but says she was hesitant to jump into her role on the women’s ensemble without knowing anyone at Theatre Royale’s productions.

“It is my very first professional show and I have never done a paid show.

Having a regional tour on your resume is a great thing,” Vasile says. “Even if it’s just ensemble, it’s a great way to work myself up and network myself. I had to say ‘yes’ I was so excited.”

Rosen has been working with King, who owns Theatre Royale with his wife Carolyn King. Rosen met King through dancing while he was teaching in the Lake Elsinore School District. After seeing how proficient Rosen was at dancing, King hired her as the new choreographer. Now, six years later, after assisting in directing at Cornerstone Christian School and doing stage management at the church and school, Rosen has become the production manager for Theater Royale.

“Scott asked me in March about an assistant production management position. I was immediately like, ‘Yes! How can I rearrange my school schedule to make this happen?’” Rosen says. “I have been blessed that there have been opportunities to take on a lot of responsibilities, even in this production. Now we are getting close to the finish line and I’m not the

production assistant anymore. That is really cool.”

The opportunities that presented themselves to Pauline, Vasile and Rosen have given the trio open doors to share the love of Christ through their passion for musical theater.

“It is my place of worship because I am able to create, I am able to love people, I am able to get inside the heads of people that may either be lost or found; it doesn’t matter,” Pauline says. “I am using the gifts God has given me and by doing that, this is my act of worship.”

For Rosen, she thinks “Les Mis” is a wonderful story for followers of Christ who are wanting to share the gospel through musical theater.

“It is a story about redemption, grace and mercy,” Rosen says. “It is a story about undeserved grace and forgiveness that’s granted and about God being there to give hope in the lowest and worst times.”

June dates for Theatre Royale’s “Les Miserables” tour are yet to be released, but the long journey for Pauline, Vasile and Rosen continues. As each glorifies God through their skills and talents on the stage, they also remind each other to always worship under the spotlight.

“It doesn’t matter if we are (performing) for a house of 1,000 or a house of one, if we have our focus on God, whatever happens, happens,” Pauline says.

These students are taught that striving for what they believe is worth the effort.

SHAPING THE WAVE A DOCUMENTATION OF HOMEGROWN CRAFT & HONESTY

LIKE AN ARTIST WITH A BLANK CANVAS, MICHAEL WOODHEAD SEES ONLY ENDLESS POTENTIAL.

Location: Huntington Beach, California.

He sits in his garage, admiring the glow of the early morning sunrise. Another day awaits him as he not only prepares to venture out in hopes of riding the perfect wave but to create the ideal board to touch the cool water.

For centuries, surfing has captivated those who share a passion for the ocean. But for Michael Woodhead, senior marketing major at California Baptist University, his love of surfing is more than just catching waves.

In his garage, Woodhead has built his own personal surfboard-shaping workshop to create, customize and design surfboards. Spread out in the corner on a small wooden box lay several different tools that Woodhead 40 | PURSUIT

uses to shape his boards.

“Ever since I was little I’ve tried to stand on a boogie board and enjoyed the sensation of riding a wave. Ever since then, it’s become a part of my life,” Woodhead says. “I really enjoy the water and love experiencing God’s creation through the ocean and seeing how crazy and powerful it is. Being able to ride (the waves) is awe inspiring.”

For 12 years, not only has Woodhead admired the skill behind surfing but he also found admiration for fine art. From canvas painting to woodworking, Woodhead says he loves working with his hands.

The root of his inspiration for board crafting and his artistic side runs in the family.

Woodhead’s father and grandfather have never shaped surfboards; he is the first in his family to do so. What they passed on to Woodhead, though, is their carpentry skills.

“My dad learned from his dad and has his own shop where he does intricate woodworking. I had the opportunity to work with him for a while and have learned the trade from him,” Woodhead says. “It’s been cool being blessed to work with a dad who admires working with his hands just as much as I do.”

About three years ago, Woodhead discovered his talent for crafting surfboards. While surfing, Woodhead wiped out and broke his board in half. As he looked down at the broken piece of foam, he had two options — pay for a new one or attempt to create one himself. He thought to himself, “It doesn’t look too hard.”

After two hours of work, Woodhead was ready to put his creation to the test. In spite of a timid first run with his newly crafted surfboard, it wound up a success.

“I was really scared to try my new board not knowing if it would float or not,” Woodhead says.

Woodhead began to put time and effort into his new hobby, which blossomed into something he enjoyed.

Now after having crafted 10 boards — one of which Woodhead made specifically for himself and uses to surf today — shaping has become more than just a hobby for him. Shaping combines woodworking with Woodhead’s artwork and he says it provides a stress release.

Woodhead not only takes pre-existing designs to see if he can repeat them but also tweaks them farther according to how he would like his boards to handle in the water.

“It might be cheesy, but I love grabbing a massive chunk of foam and telling myself, ‘OK, this will turn out to be a surfboard. I’m just going to shape this, and eventually, with enough care and diligence and handling, a surfboard will come

out of this piece of foam,’” Woodhead says.

All his fondest memories of surfing and shaping come from quality time and support from his family and friends.

“I would have never known it if (Woodhead) didn’t mention he made the board he was riding,” Frisch says. “He took off on a big wave down Salt Creek and just launched himself in the air off the wave, came down really hard and, once he came up for air, he was more worried about the board than himself.”

One of the things that makes Woodhead’s boardshaping so special is his brand name. Known as MAW Surfboards, which stands for Michael Allen Woodhead, the name centers around the theme of having no limits with his work.

“His signature MAW stamp is his own hidden signature. He says it’s just the abbreviation for his name but it’s more than that,” Frisch says. “It’s his years of passion and skills going into every little detail.

He loves taking the time to make everything work and do it perfect.”

One of the most notable boards Woodhead has shaped and designed is The Octopus. It began by taking the concept of an octopus and cross-hatching to making the ink appear in different colors. Woodhead wanted the octopus to be rather plain and the ink that surrounded the creature to grab the attention.

“One of the most special things about Michael and his board-crafting would be that he is willing to serve others through it,” says Kayla Plouffe, junior graphic design major. “He’s been able to help teach people how to shape boards of their own and has such a big heart for surfing and for other people. He doesn’t do it for money, but for the pure enjoyment of helping others and doing something he loves so much.”

may be unexpected from someone whose friends see him as humble. Longtime friend Ryan Wildland has not only seen the talent that pours out of Woodhead, but also his inspiration and perseverance.

“It’s not easy. It demands detail and finesse, which he does so effortlessly,” Wildland says. “His love for surfing and art is reflected through his shaping.”

Wildland says Woodhead’s talent is something special that seems to come to him naturally, but Woodhead encourages others to give it a try.

“If you’re interested in shaping don’t be afraid to go for it,” Woodhead says. “Take a risk. Maybe mess up a blank or two but if you start getting it, I’ll guarantee you’ll enjoy it.”

Woodhead’s talent and heart have inspired many.

His humility, compassion and uncompromising personality encourage others because they say they see Christ through everything he does.

“I do not want there to be boundaries with my

work or make it so it is placed in different categories,” Woodhead says. “If I’m painting something it works together with surfing as well as it works together with my woodworking. It gives me free range to do whatever I want on these boards, like having a huge blank canvas.”

As an ocean shapes its waves, Woodhead continues to shape both his heart and his boards as he awaits countless more sessions in the water.

tudents who walk into the Staples Room at California Baptist University may stumble upon a music video in the making.

Connor Smith, senior music composition major and aspiring singer/songwriter, has come a long way since his grandmother Madge Rodda, a renowned organist, used to pay him to practice playing the piano.

“One of my first memories with music is her making a deal with me,” Smith says. “If I practiced piano for an hour a week and came to my lesson, she would pay me $5.”

Although he grew up surrounded by music, it was not until Smith came to CBU that he realized his gift for songwriting. Using YouTube as a platform, Smith showcases his talent by filming original and cover song videos and posting them on his YouTube channel, ConnorsPlace, which has gathered a following of more than 650 subscribers.

“Connor is very much a self-starter in 46 | PURSUIT

this process. He takes a long time to film his videos because of what he wants the result to sound and look like,” says Morgan Teruel, CBU graduate with a degree in music education.

Drawing his inspiration from lyrical role model Sara Bareilles, Smith strives to create lyrics with which his subscribers can connect.

“My favorite part of making music is the connection,” Smith says. “There’s nothing more fulfilling than that.”

Smith’s first music video was a rendition of Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

“It was an acoustic cover that we filmed in one-take style. We probably did eight or nine takes of it before we were satisfied,” Smith says.

With the first video of his channel uploaded, Smith sought support from others through comments, likes and shares. Smith has now uploaded a musical, five original

songs, 11 covers and more than 100 video logs on YouTube since he started his channel in 2012.

“What makes our generation so amazing is we have the opportunity to start our careers right now, on our own, with YouTube and other social media,” Smith says.

Smith’s most viewed video, “Sweet Nothing,” has received more than 59,000 views. It is a medley arranged with Desmond Clark, CBU graduate with a degree in music composition.

“YouTube is where the unsigned performer turns today to get discovered. I hope that one day soon, that too is where I will be discovered,” Smith says.

Armed with aspirations to succeed, Smith is paving his own way into the music industry for all to see through his YouTube channel, hoping to be discovered.

t’s not like we can call up Paul the Apostle and ask him, “Hey Paul, what do you think about saying the word @#$%?”

This isn’t the world we live in. As Christians, we live in a perpetual struggle.

We may struggle with our faith, with temptations, with waiting for God to answer us.

But one of the most pertinent struggles to our Christian lives is connecting the God-inspired book, written 2,000 years ago with our ethics, personal convictions and opinions of today.

How do we take this sacred, lifebreathing text and apply it to our daily interactions?

How do we, as Christians, feel or think about the controversy that cussing can bring?

How do we respond to other believers and nonbelievers when they approach the issue differently from us?

We should start a conversation to achieve a more sophisticated answer than what’s taught in Sunday school. Through taking Scripture and talking it out, a communal application can be generated in our churches, friendships and class discussions.

CHRISTIANS TACKLE THE DISCUSSION SURROUNDING LANGUAGE, INTENTION AND HOW SPEECH REFLECTS CHARACTER.

Jordan Lagana, senior film studies and English double major, believes “the ‘clean’ version of a phrase is just as bad as the ‘explicit’ version of the phrase because of one reason: intention. The intention and meaning is entirely the same. Saying ‘Gosh, darn it!’ or ‘Heck!’ are two obvious substitutes for other, less desirable phrases. But, these phrases, clean or otherwise, are still coupled with the sinful feelings we are expressing through language. You may be saying one thing, but the feeling in your heart is tell-tale enough.”

Matt Myatt, sophomore marketing major, said that, “Christians often overemphasize (cussing) as a horrible sin, while permitting others, such as gossip, that are far more destructive to the church body than using a word that is deemed inappropriate.”

Christabel Acusa, senior nursing major, says, “When we consider the motive behind swearing, it’s mostly out

of either anger or trying to please others by being funny, which is a practice called people-pleasing. I can’t tell you one time that I’ve ever heard someone cuss to bring glory to God, have you?”

Ricky Ortega, senior Christian behavioral science major, says, “The heart of the matter is what Jesus brings up: It’s not what you eat or what you ingest that defiles a man, but what comes out. Where the heart is, the mouth speaks. In the matter of cussing, in many ways, it can indicate where someone’s heart is. But it’s more of a correlation thing than a causation thing.”

Leonard Lee, founder of LINC Ministries, advises not to, “take the Lord’s name in vain. That was a biggie growing up. It made the top 10 in the Bible. In the places I traveled that meant primarily one thing. Don’t use God’s name in your swearing. Don’t carry the name of God in a way that makes it void of its meaning.

“Today, that might look like a person who bears the name ‘Christian’ but does

not trust God enough to give, does not seek ways to love others, does not think enough of the name to let it shape their words and thoughts, never shares the one name by which all people will be measured — Christ Jesus. This is taking the Lord’s name in vain, much more so than ‘gosh’ or ‘golly.’”

Colossians 4:6 says,“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

By thinking about these things, we can begin to resolve the internal struggle the issue can cause.

As Christians, we need to ask ourselves what the Lord requires of us. What pleases him?

How should we speak in a way that would lead him to say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant?”

As human beings, are we speaking words that improve upon a silence? Ponder these things and choose words that will build up those around you, because that is when ministry happens.

SWEET ON HONEY

The busy bees work their magic, buzzing from flower to flower to create a delectable sweet that is so versatile, it can be used in any step of your meal. No need to find a hive or purchase a full beekeeping suit to enjoy; just grab that plastic bear bottle, who is no doubt smiling because he’s filled with his favorite treat. Cook up love this spring with these recipes you’ll want to share with your honey bear.

DRINK: BUMBLEBEE CHAI INGREDIENTS 2 cups water 2 black tea bags (tags removed) 3/4 teaspoon ground cardamom 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 whole cloves Pinch black pepper Pinch salt 2 cups milk 1/4 cup honey 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract Whipped cream 1 cinnamon stick

STEPS 1. Mix water, tea bags, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves together in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil.

2. Reduce heat and let simmer for five minutes.

3. Add salt, pepper, milk and honey.

4. Bring mixture to a boil.

5. Remove from heat, add vanilla extract and strain liquid through mesh sieve into mugs.

6. Top with whipped cream and one cinnamon stick.

APPETIZER: SWEET GREEN BEANS WITH ALMONDS

INGREDIENTS 1 pound fresh green beans 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons sliced almonds 2 tablespoons honey

1. Cook green beans for five minutes in boiling water. Drain beans and return pan to heat.

2. Put beans in oil and add almonds. Turn off heat and drizzle honey.

3. Set mixture on a plate and serve.

DESSERT: SWEET AND SALTY PIE INGREDIENTS 1 9-inch pie shell 1/2 cup unsalted

butter, melted 3/4 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoon white cornmeal 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

3/4 cup honey 2 teaspoon white vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 3 eggs 1/2 cup heavy cream

ENTREE: HONEY CHICKEN PENNE PASTA INGREDIENTS 3 cups penne pasta (10 ounces) 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped thyme leaves 2 2-pound rotisserie chickens (cut in cubes) 2 cups seedless red grapes (cut in half) 1 cup sliced celery (2 medium stalks) 1 1/4 cups mayonnaise 1 tablespoon coarse-grained mustard 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon milk 1 teaspoon salt

STEPS 1. Cook and drain pasta. Rinse with cold water, drain again.

2. Mix oil and 1 tablespoon of thyme leaves in small bowl.

3. In a large bowl, toss in pasta, chicken, grapes and celery and pour in oil mixture. Toss to coat.

4. In a separate bowl, mix mayonnaise, mustard, honey, milk, salt and remaining thyme.

5. Cover chicken mixture and mayonnaise mixture separately and refrigerate both for 4 hours.

6. Remove from fridge, toss mixtures together until fully coated and serve.

STEPS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Mix melted butter, sugar, salt and cornmeal in a large bowl until a thick consistency. Add in honey, vanilla and vinegar for the honey filling.

3. Add heavy cream and whisked eggs in honey filling.

Mix until all ingredients are combined.

4. Pour filling into aluminumlined pie shell.

5. Bake on lowest oven rack for 40 minutes. Move to middle rack and remove foil from crust.

6. Continue baking for 20 minutes and then remove from oven. (Filling will be puffy when pie is removed from oven.)

7. Let sit for an hour and add a dash of sea salt on top.

8. Slice and dollop with whipped cream.

Dr. Joseph Pelletier, assistant professor of psychology and director of research, proves classroom settings can combine fun and learning.

Dr. Joseph Pelletier is one of the most interesting people you’ve never met on the California Baptist University campus.

Growing up in Texas, the assistant professor of psychology thought he would be a mechanic. After attending college because his parents issued him an ultimatum, he ended up a professor who has thrived in the educational world, holding a doctorate in social psychology from the University of Kent

in England, where he previously taught — and from where he was deported.

Equipped with an awesome “man-bun” of fury, Pelletier references video games and media during his lectures to make his students more receptive to psychology concepts. But Pelletier is more than just a “fun professor”: His life has seen a number of unexpected turns that eventually led him to the School of Behavioral Sciences at CBU. Photo By Niza Pattimukay

MY LIFE IS LIKE A LONG STORY OF HOW, DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS, GOD MADE SOMETHING WONDERFUL HAPPEN WITH THE PEOPLE AROUND ME. PURSUIT: DID YOU EVER CONSIDER NOT GOING TO COLLEGE? PELLETIER: Absolutely. I never intended on going to college as a kid. When I got to high school, my parents wanted me to go to college and I wanted to be a mechanic. They never went to college and it was their dream. My dad basically said, “You have three options: you can go to college as planned; you can join the Army; or we’ll disown you. Pick one of the three.” I went to college, which is good because 9/11 happened almost a year later. I probably would’ve seen combat at one point.

My life is like a long story of how, despite my best efforts, God made something wonderful happen with the people around me.

PURSUIT: HOW DID YOUR PASSION FOR PSYCHOLOGY DEVELOP? PELLETIER: I had a really good high school psychology teacher named Dr. Welch. She was awesome and a Christian. We just connected. I always had an interest in the subject, but that’s when I realized psychology is what I wanted to do and from there I decided on my major.

PURSUIT: WHAT LED YOU FROM TEXAS A&M TO KENT UNIVERSITY? PELLETIER: In high school, I dated a girl who was British. We broke up during high school but stayed friends. I went to visit her and fell in love with the country. I thought maybe for grad school I would apply in England. I did all sorts of research and found if I was going to grad school, Kent University is the school I wanted to go to and if it’s meant to be, God is going to make this happen. I applied and got in. In hindsight, I don’t know how I got in. My GPA wasn’t very good. I had actually never been to the part of England that I applied for. I just knew I liked the country and thought, “What the heck? I might as well.”

PURSUIT: AFTER BEING ABROAD, HOW DID YOU END UP AT CBU? PELLETIER: The short answer for this one is God again. I got deported; it was unusual. My wife had a great job as a researcher. We had two cars paid off. We were doing really well and had this awesome life and all of a sudden God was like, “Nope, not here.” February is the first month we can legally go back to London after five years. I sent in my application (for an opening at CBU). I saw the tagline “Live Your Purpose,” and I thought, “That’s my purpose.” They offered me the job and I moved blindly again. I had only been to Riverside once for the interview.

PURSUIT: WHAT INSPIRES YOUR UNCONVENTIONAL TEACHING METHODS? PELLETIER: I have a limited attention span and feel like so much of what you are taught isn’t retained. Especially among students that have three or four classes in a day, they have a hard time retaining the information they are taught. There were so many professors who talk slow. I would think, “You’re bored, and you’re paid to be here. How am I supposed to be excited about this?”

PURSUIT: HOW DOES YOUR FAITH CONNECT WITH YOUR PRACTICE IN PSYCHOLOGY? PELLETIER: I like to think that everything I do reflects my faith. I decide things based on my perspective on faith. I do a lot of work on prosocial behavior, for example, which focuses on kindness. When I think of hypotheses and human behavior, I think about them in the context of faith. I assume that there is some mechanism of faith at work.

HAIR CARE & TATTOOS PURSUIT: WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR HAIR CUT? PELLETIER: I don’t like haircuts. I don’t like the idea of strangers putting sharp things around my face.

PURSUIT: WHAT HAIR PRODUCTS DO YOU USE? PELLETIER: The cheap stuff. I use the cheap stuff.

PURSUIT: FAVORITE ‘STAR WARS’ MOVIE? PELLETIER: ‘Return of the Jedi.’

PURSUIT: IF YOU HAD TO HAVE ANY OTHER CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? PELLETIER: At this stage of my life, I would be a Lego designer to make new sets based on different designs.

PURSUIT: HOW MANY TATTOOS DO YOU HAVE? PELLETIER: I don’t know what the number is. Hours-wise, it’s about 130-140.

The air becomes thin, your eyes are peeled open and adrenaline races through your body. This is a rush that cannot be fulfilled by just any ordinary sport or extracurricular activity.

Originally from Breckenridge, Colorado, Zach Mullins, freshman visual arts major, came to California Baptist University on a diving scholarship. Even though spring diving is part of his life on campus, off campus he participates in a different kind of diving that some call him crazy for doing: cliff diving. Mullins grew up in a family where leaping off of cliffs was a routine activity.

Mullins remembers the first time he tested his courage in the third grade and free fell for 40 feet. Since that day, Mullins has traveled throughout the West Coast in search of cliffs that will fulfill his need for an adrenaline rush.

“There is one (cliff ) in Colorado called Paradise Cove, which is where I usually go that has a 100-footer,” Mullins says. “(The 54 | PURSUIT

water) is 15 feet by 15 feet and goes down 30 feet, and that’s what I’m jumping into.”

There are different types of adrenalinepumping experiences, but Mullins says the one you get from dropping off a 40-to-50foot cliff is the ultimate stomach drop. The feeling of jumping off monster cliffs from 80 to 100 feet, he says, is indescribable.

“The stomach-drop feeling,” Mullins says. “That’s my favorite feeling in the world. Everything feels like (it is) freefalling a little bit. You’re falling fast but you feel like you’re up there for an hour and you’re just looking around.”

Jack Bergstrom, freshman kinesiology major, entertains his need for speed by riding, racing and watching motocross.

Bergstrom recently went to the first Monster Energy Supercross race of the 2015 year held in Angel Stadium just 35 minutes from CBU. Anaheim One is the first of 17 races in the Supercross circuit and one of three races held at Angel Stadium throughout the year.

“I was 5 years old when I got my first bike. The second I threw my leg over it, I never wanted to get off, and it’s been that way ever since,” Bergstrom says.

Milestone Motocross Park in Riverside is a track where Bergstrom can be found during his free time — riding up to 50 mph and jumping dirt jumps that launch him 20 to 40 feet into the air. Bergstrom says there is no feeling like racing his motorcycle and that is why he chooses motocross as his adrenaline fix.

“My vision is narrowed, my heart is racing but my mind is calm with the adrenaline pumping through my body and I’m ready to go to battle,” Bergstrom says.

Raymond Hernandez, Master of Science in counseling psychology student, took a leap of faith and changed his repetitive daily routine with the extreme free fall: skydiving.

“Working seven days a week and having the same daily schedule started getting old,” Hernandez says. “I was burning out fast with school and work. I decided to do something that was out of the ordinary.”

Hernandez says he was shocked by the beautiful view as he traveled from the safety of ground up to the unknown of the sky. The door of the airplane opened, the instructor asked if Hernandez was ready and all he could do was nod. As Hernandez held on to the plane before jumping, he could only clear his mind and look at Lake Elsinore below him.

“The 60-second free-fall was the greatest adrenaline rush one can get,” Hernandez says. “From spinning in circles and doing flips, not having a care in life was really all I needed.”

Between going to school full time and training every day for the CBU dive team, Mullins can relate to Hernandez’s thoughts on escaping a mundane daily schedule but considers cliff diving a way to relax and let go.

“Cliff diving is nature’s way of diving,” Mullins says. “I’ve learned how to let go because if you think about things too long, you psyche yourself out and you don’t understand it. I think about nothing and just step off.”

For these unique CBU students, they have found locations around Riverside that accommodate their not-so-common sporting activities.

Not all students have the need for speed or crave the ultimate adrenaline rush, and some may call Bergstrom, Mullins and Hernandez crazy for what they do. But for these three students, it’s just a way of life.

Do the same movement as beginner but once you are in the frog-like position, stand up. Squat back down and jump into original pushup position.
