EDITOR’S NOTE

C

omplacency is simple. Contentment is not. A thin line is often blurred between complacency and contentment.

Our crafty minds have figured out ways to hold us hostage to desires we no longer have simply because we are comfortable with how the situation is at that moment.

Sometimes, we stop chasing what we want and start pacing between the things we already know. We stop our pursuit.

Don’t be satisfied with a dead-end job, a lackluster relationship or most devastating, a dull spiritual life. We are made to be more. We are made to be in pursuit of the good in life.

We are created to appreciate, not vegetate. Stopping to smell the roses is great if you still have the intention of walking through the entire garden. If you don’t, think of all the lovely sights you’ll

miss. Be thankful for the beautiful scenes you’ve encountered and continue on for more.

But we must also be careful of dissatisfaction with our position now.

Always wanting more, we tell ourselves the next acquisition will finally make us happy ... until it doesn’t.

There is a thin line, indeed.

Only through Christ do we find a true passion and joy in what we are already given. In him, there is a beautiful balance of satisfaction and drive.

This issue of Pursuit is dedicated to California Baptist University’s president, Dr. Ronald L. Ellis, a man who leads a team that has learned to dodge the trap of complacency and find fulfillment in Christ. Twenty years later, his dreams for CBU are still developing.

The vision for CBU was not one

accomplished without the reliance and understanding that God would bring about the best, regardless of if it was more or less than originally hoped. Now here we are, relishing in the wonderful aspects of CBU that leave us fulfilled as Lancers.

So define the line. Put in your all.

Strive to be the best you can be in order to bring God glory. That’s how we were designed after all — to take his grace and find joy in what we have while still improving daily to declare his goodness.

There is nothing like the beautiful contentment found when we learn to strive for the best and still appreciate where we are in Jesus Christ.

Makeup

A WEEK WITHOUT

WITH LAURA QUACH

THERE IS A SENSE OF FREEDOM THAT COMES FROM NOT FEELING OBLIGATED TO LOOK A CERTAIN WAY.

C

oncealer, powder, foundation, blush, eye shadow, mascara, lipstick, heat-protector and hairspray. If this list sounds ridiculously long, that’s because it is — and I could easily keep going. Many women, myself included, wake up hours before they need to in order to get ready for their day.

After going a week without getting “dolled up,” this is what I realized:

I REALLY DON’T LIKE THE TERM ‘SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE.’ As the years have gone by and I have gotten closer to graduating from college, I’ve put less effort into looking a certain way that makes me feel accepted by society. Rather than spending two hours — yes, two hours — every morning doing my hair and makeup, I’ve either given myself more time to sleep, or I’ve used it to do school work. I’d be happy to show up to school without having done my hair, sans makeup and in sweats if my redirected efforts got me As in my classes.

I AM CONFIDENT WITH MYSELF UNTIL I REALLY NEED TO IMPRESS SOMEONE. As a graduating senior, I’m busy looking for jobs and trying to get my Photos by Raine Paul Previous page photo by Tim Kothlow

career started. Working in the media industry, I can’t look merely acceptable; I must look professional and glamorous.

Don’t get me wrong, I will never turn down the opportunity to go shopping for a new pair of heels and lipstick, but I wish I could represent myself and influence potential employers with my ability to do exceptional work without having to impress them with my appearance. It would certainly save time in the morning.

AS IT TURNS OUT, STYLING MY HAIR IS A WASTE OF TIME. “Doing my hair” automatically means I single-handedly put that hole in the ozone layer with all the hairspray I used.

The natural texture and appearance of hair looks as if I spent the entire day at the beach and I love it. However, bohochic hair doesn’t necessarily translate into a serious, working professional, which is where the hot tools come into play.

FACIALS AND HAIR CUTS ARE A MUST. Because of my usual hair and makeup routine, I hardly see my skin and hair in their naturally poor state. During my week without makeup, I began noticing sun damage on my face and acne scars I didn’t

even know were there because they were hiding beneath layers of concealer. Luckily for me, my mom is a skincare professional and was able to give me a facial to cleanse the impurities in my skin, which is coincidentally caused by wearing makeup.

LESS IS MORE. On a day-to-day basis, I am more comfortable not wearing makeup and doing my hair. There is a sense of freedom that comes from not feeling obligated to look a certain way. Truth be told, people will judge me for how I look with or without my hair and makeup being done.

I would rather have people judge me for being me — the me that God made — and not criticizing me for going too bold with my eyeshadow or not blending my foundation with my skin tone.

BIWEEKLY FACIALS, HAIR TRIMS, A COAT OF MASCARA AND SOME LIP BALM IS ALL I NEED TO FEEL CONFIDENT WITH MYSELF. Natural is beautiful, raw and honest.

That should be made the norm, but a little lipstick never hurt anyone. Being glamorous should be playful and carefree, not a criteria women must meet to feel socially accepted.

The playful personalities of dogs naturally create a lighthearted environment for those around them. Dogs like Rugar at the School of Nursing are specifically trained to brighten someone’s day.

A

fter a long night of studying, nothing could satisfy students’ craving for relaxation more than Netflix in the comfort of their bed. That is, until the door swings open and Rugar trots into the room.

The moment Rugar, a Goldendoodle — half Golden Retriever, half poodle — therapy dog, walks into the room, worries 10 | PURSUIT

immediately fade as students watch him pant in excitement as he is introduced to new friends. Rugar roams around the room, easing any trace of anxiety lingering in the group of nursing students about to take an exam.

Dr. Juliann Perdue, director of the undergraduate nursing program and professor in the School of Nursing at California Baptist University, trains Rugar. She says he’s the perfect breed to be trained as a therapy dog because the blend of retriever and poodle makes for a loyal, friendly and smart companion.

Perdue is training Rugar as a therapy dog for the nursing students, but he will also be taken to several hospitals once he is fully trained so nursing students can

observe animal therapy in action.

Rugar is the first dog Perdue has trained and is just a few tests shy of receiving his full animal therapy certification.

“There are specific things you have to do for the certification test,” Perdue says.

“But the last and most difficult one is walking on a loose leash, which means he won’t pull you next to someone else with a dog and he has to sit while you stop and shake someone’s hand without going to the other dog.”

Perdue got the idea of training a therapy dog from a conference she attended a few years ago. She says that one of the speakers from the Cancer Treatment Centers of America brought

her Goldendoodle and led a session on animal therapy.

Not only did this woman’s training experience prompt Perdue to train a dog of her own, but her personal experience with a therapy dog made a significant impact on Perdue that eventually led her to purchase Rugar.

“When I was in the hospital, I had a therapy dog come and it just made my day,” Perdue says. “Just from (Rugar) walking in the classroom, I see the smiles on my students and (hear) the ‘awes.’ How can you not love that and feel better?”

Perdue knows how animal therapy aided in her own recovery, but now she specifically sees how animals can positively impact her students in other ways, as well.

“Rugar came in right before our test and that was really calming for a couple minutes,” says Kayla North, senior nursing major. “We weren’t so anxious about taking the test anymore.”

Jordan Kloosterman, senior nursing major, says he saw a therapy dog come in

during his pediatric rotation.

“The kids just flocked to (the dog) and gave it hugs and it made them feel more comfortable in the hospital,” Kloosterman says. “I see a benefit in children’s hospitals because they’re scared and sick, so they probably miss their dog at home.”

North says therapy dogs help with people who are undergoing long-term care because it takes their mind off their worries and puts their focus on the dog.

No smile could be wiped away from their faces as nursing students gathered on the floor in a circle taking turns petting Rugar.

“From the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, they have a population of people who just don’t feel well and the stories (they tell) prove the impact these animals make,” Perdue says. “There is evidence-based literature that it decreases blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety.”

As the only dog permitted on campus, Rugar has a meaningful purpose with each visit. He brings a calmness with him to all who need respite from their worries.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS CROSS BORDERS

THE LANCERS OF CALIFORNIA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY WELCOME ATHLETES FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THIS YEAR THE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM IS JOINED BY TWO FRENCH STUDENTS WHO HAVE HAD TO ADJUST TO MANY ASPECTS OF THE LANCER COMMUNITY.

f college wasn’t already difficult enough, imagine moving to a foreign country, learning a new language, and on top of all that, being on an athletics team.

Two French students are doing just that this semester at California Baptist University. However, they say the support from their track and cross country team makes the transition enjoyable as they learn to live on a different continent and compete in America.

El Hajjami and Robert say cross country and track are more than just sports for them and they cannot stress enough the importance of teamwork.

They say the support from their team has significantly helped their transition into American culture.

“The difference between France and here is that in France I train alone and here we work as a team,” Robert says. “It helps you train better.”

El Hajjami says they have had to change some of their habits from racing with clubs in France in order to adjust to the team at CBU. He also says he enjoys the environment and encouragement he

receives from his Lancer teammates.

Dr. Ben Gall, men’s head cross country and track coach, says he believes relationships are the key to team spirit, and that team spirit, in turn, drives them forward as a unit.

“We try to do a lot of things, but a lot of it develops organically because they are around each other so much and are pursuing a common goal,” Gall says. “It’s important to try and keep them all on the same path — they’re all a part of a bigger picture.”

Gall says the team spends time in prayer, holds team devotions and Gall meets with the team members individually so they know they are cared

for outside of the athletics program.

“The team spirit here is natural because we are together every day,” Robert says of his CBU team.

Gall says working on a team teaches the members endurance, accountability, teamwork and several other skills they can use in the future outside of sports.

“When someone does bad we comfort them and encourage them to be better the next time, to help them with the physiological aspect of the sport,” El Hajjami says.

With their busy schedules, El Hajjami and Robert agree there has to be a balance between athletics, academics and friends.

Gall says he makes it a point to help the team members balance their complicated schedules.

“They may be stretched a little thin, but they have a support system and cannot fall through the cracks,” Gall says. “Abdel and Valentin come, they work hard and they encourage everyone else. If they have an off day they just move on — it helps everyone else.”

While Gall says El Hajjami and Robert are hard workers, they like to keep things light, too.

“They are great,” Gall says. “They provide a good balance and they are both kind of goof balls.”

Robert says he likes to take naps in his spare time and El Hajjami laughs and agrees, “It is wonderful, isn’t it?”

Robert says his goal is to go to nationals this year and become an AllAmerican. El Hajjami says he wants CBU in the Top-10 cross country teams and also wants to be AllAmerican.

Although El Hajjami and Robert are more than 5,000 miles away from home, they say the relationships they have formed with their CBU team members have helped them become more comfortable in America.

lashback Fridays and throwback Thursdays on Instagram feeds are not the only glimpses from the past worth paying attention to these days. Fashion, just as so many other things, has been inspired by foregone eras.

As we move forward in the 21st century, fashion is again looking in the rearview mirror and returning to trends that are now resurfacing at the forefront of cultural consciousness.

Fashion trends from the ’90s are coming back in full force, drawing inspiration from both the street and the music fashion of that decade. These looks, ranging from high-waisted shorts to crop tops, are inspired by the underground “grunge” look of the ’90s.

Amy Straight, a self-proclaimed fashionista who studied fashion merchandising at Sonoma State University, says fashion trends usually come in 20-year cycles and the clothes people are seeing in stores now are clothes that were big in the underground scene of the 1990s.

“Fashion trends follow music trends a lot of the time,” Straight says. “Indie pop and pop punk are what’s big at the moment, the same as in the ’90s, which contributes to what we are seeing in stores today.”

Straight says that music, more than anything, is what influences style in popular fashion.

“Basically, it’s all about keeping things simple,” Straight says. “Using accessories such as denim jackets or different types of platform shoes or boots as a statement piece in looks is important. It’s the kind of thing you see at music festivals, but translated to the everyday for people even a little interested in fashion.”

Then again, the ’90s are not the only era gaining ground in fashion culture today.

Other fashion statements, such as the bell-bottom jeans seen in the 1970s, are making their way back into people’s closets in 2014.

Danica Kinne, freshman psychology and anthropology double major, says she sees a number of these trends on women around her, including circle lens sunglasses, brightly colored basic attire and even bold chokers. These trends date back to the ’60s, ’80s and ’90s.

“I appreciate unique, flattering trends that come back into style over time, because they are a reminder that humanity tends to repeat actions and interests, in general,” Kinne says.

As a double major in studies that focus on how people express and define themselves, Kinne notes that she can see why and how fashion often factors into human expression.

“Fashion trends tend to go in a full circle throughout time with styles and types of clothing going in and out of style,” Kinne says. “The circle of trends can be seen in today’s society with obvious influences from recent decades.”

Of course, guys can’t be left out of the “throwback fashion” of the modern day. Mid-thigh length shorts and pastel-colored shorts are gaining popularity among university men in the United States. This style originally Photos by Emily Gallina

gained popularity in the 1980s. Flannel shirts, baseball snapbacks and “reissue” sneakers from brands such as Nike and Adidas, which were popularized by athletes in the 1990s, are coming back in style for men today.

Kameron Farmer, sophomore health science major, sports a sense of fashion similarly styled in the trends of the ’90s and says fashion is really just a means to express himself and his personality.

Palms sweaty and heart racing, the unemployed university graduate is about to hand over his or her resume.

The employer only needs six seconds to form an opinion about the document. After a once-over for consistent formating and relevant work experience, the employer is impressed.

With first impressions formed in so little time, a strong resume is key in landing a job. Crafting one that stays on top of the employer’s acceptance pile, though, can be difficult without guidance.

Chelsea Royse, associate director of the Career Center at California Baptist University, outlines a few ways for students to keep resumes focused and up-to-date. Royse says color is unnecessary when producing a resume but the format is important.

“There have been studies done where there are two resumes with the same amount of content and one is submitted beautifully and one is not,” Royse says.

“The one that is formatted pretty will be looked at more than the other one.”

Royse says that a resume is only a snapshot of someone who will get the interview and ultimately land the job.

Royce’s five steps to creating a successful resume could help a student land his or her dream job.

Focus on being relevant to who you are and the position for which you’re applying. If you’re applying for a job in graphic design, your resume might incorporate design. If you’re applying for a finance job, avoid superfluous design flourishes.

You’re making a professional resume now, so we are going to assume you graduated high school and you can omit that information.

Some basics you should have in your resume include a personal objective, your education and any previous work or volunteer experiences.

It’s important to have key points bold and formatted cleanly so the right things jump out at your potential employer.

Cut the fluff. Long lists of hobbies distract from job-related information and clutter the page with more type. Display your winning personality in the interview instead.

Just as trends in the fashion world constantly change, the world of music evolves just the same. While there was once a time where electronic dance music may have been considered noise and certain genres weren’t blended, artists today are vastly changing the sonic landscape.

oday, musicians are trying to carve out their own space in a market more saturated with new music than ever before, thanks to digital downloads. Electric dance music and other genres merge together as a new take on music that has found its place in the world and the hearts of students.

Genres that should, in theory, clash with one other now create a different vibe and a fresh, new sound.

Jacob Quintanilla, freshman prenursing major, says he listens to artists that have a beneficial effect on his life such as Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers and Lana Del Rey. Although Lana Del Rey and Vampire Weekend may not be mainstream radio staples, Quintanilla says he listens to artists like these because they sing about sadness and real issues people face, rather than singing about the happy love that many pop artists portray in their music.

Some musical elements considered a part of the past are beginning to resurface into the music world and into the hearts of the audience.

“Five to 10 years ago, music mainly consisted of pop and hip-hop and, although those genres are still popular, other genres such as rap, indie and alternative music have become just as popular,” Quintanilla says.

“In the ’90s, there were a lot of boy and girl bands such as the Backstreet Boys and Destiny’s Child. In the 2000s, it shifted away from that and many artists went solo, but now it’s coming back into style with bands such as One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer and Fifth Harmony.”

In a time where a mix of pop and electronic dance music is accepted on the radio, numerous people have grown to like the whole experience of EDM music and continue to make the genre popular.

“EDM is really popular because of the music festivals, such as Escape and Day of the Dead, where people can dress up in bright colors and crazy costumes while listening to the sounds and beats they enjoy,” Quintanilla said.

Artists such as David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Daft Punk and Avicii continue to dominate the charts as they mash up elements of pop music with the sounds of

Whether it is records from decades ago or songs on the radio today, music continues to have a timeless influence on listeners.

At the same time, folk artists such as Mumford & Sons and classic acts like Fleetwood Mac are enjoying popularity as some people search for authentic sounds amid the wave of computerdriven music.

Of course, trends and tastes in music change with time.

Josh Houston, junior philosophy major, says he was interested in hip-hop during high school but began exploring other genres when he started college.

His current interests range from classical jazz to producer beats, gospel and Korean pop and hip-hop.

“I liked the sound I was hearing from (Korea),” Houston says. “Their music is somewhat similar to what you would hear in the U.S. but there was a purity in that music that I enjoyed on a whole other level.”

Haim’s use of off-kilter rhythm and tight harmonies alongside rock guitars, signals a return of music with strong melody and groove.

“Groups such as Daft Punk and artists like Robin Thicke and Bruno Mars are bringing back that disco-funk inspired type of music,” Houston says. “Much of the music today is combining mainstream and underground. Artists are also experimenting with different genres in trying to create new sounds and appeal to different markets.”

For students, music can be more than just a song with lyrics or a three-minute beat. The digital accessibility of essentially all recorded music allows people to listen on a greater level and hear a message that can speak deeply to personal situations.

“The frequencies in the various music types can affect a person’s mind, leading them to think positively or negatively,” Houston says. “This is why music has such influence. It speaks universally to the

soul, which reaches to the deepest part of you.”

Sydney Funderburk, junior film studies major, is involved with concert band, University Choir and Orchestra, Choral Union and pep band. She’s also part of a band, Leather Tramps.

Strong beats and synthesized instruments are some of the elements Funderburk says she likes in music.

“I was into Paramore and other alternative bands but my taste has developed into music that is thoughtfully written, such as interesting guitar lines or all types of brass and string instruments,” Funderburk says. “The music I listen to inspires me to create something I find interesting and unique.”

Although music trends will change over time, music itself is a constant.

Whether individuals are fans of the popular music playing on the radio today or prefer to jam out to the oldies, music transforms lives.

KICKS OF THE DAY

licking down the hallway or squeaking down the court, shoes reflect not only one’s personal style and recreational activities but also his or her personality.

Though college students may be known for rolling out of bed and rushing to class, California Baptist University students express their style not just with their outfit choice but also with what they decide to slip onto their feet.

“My favorite shoes to wear to class are my Sperrys,” says Lauren Bissell, junior accounting major. “I love wearing my boat shoes because they are comfortable and cute.”

Aside from look and comfort, one’s shoe choice can also be reflective of his or her interests.

Chris Brown, senior sociology major, can be seen wearing Nike sandals to class. He says comfort is his top priority and uses bold colors to display his personality.

As a guard for the CBU men’s basketball team, Brown says he has taken part in a number of shoe trends sporting LeBron James’, Kevin Durant’s and Kobe Bryant’s basketball shoes on and off the court.

“I am most often seen wearing 22 | PURSUIT

my cowboy boots or my boat shoes,” Bissell says. “I am completely obsessed with anything American so I love to wear my cowboy boots. I may be from Orange County but I like to think I am a Southern girl deep down inside.”

Aside from pulling on her cowboy boots, Bissell also expressed her excitement about the upcoming winter shoe trends.

“I have seen a lot of fun boots and Uggs with embellishment advertised this winter,” Bissell says. “It’s still so warm in California that I think people will be able to continue wearing their flip-flops all year long.”

Stepping out into the world in style, shoes serve more than just the purpose of comfort; they are a representation of one’s personality, interest and fashion sense.

They say that venturing out and choosing to live away from home is a life-changing experience but it can also be challenging. Although the adventure is thrilling, CBU students give some helpful tips on how to find a sense of home while living abroad.

our suitcase is packed, your boarding number has been called and your flight is ready to take off. The thrill of the unknown flutters in your heart as you prepare for what will greet you in your new home away from home.

Traveling abroad is an invaluable opportunity that California Baptist University offers its students. However, living abroad can sometimes leave a void for what a traveler leaves behind.

Analyse Montejano, senior Christian studies major, says she had a life-changing experience when she participated in the study abroad program on a ship at sea.

“Travel is the only thing you can buy that will make you better,” Montejano says.

She added that it is important for travelers to push past their comfort zones in order to learn from their experiences and spending

weeks or months away from home can be overwhelming.

Many students say they find themselves having difficulty creating a homey environment abroad.

“It was definitely a sensory overload,” says Aubrey Kerckhoff, junior early childhood development major.

Kerckhoff spent most of her summer in Bangalore, India, through CBU’s Summer of Service program and says the adjustment was trying at times.

“I was exhausted from the 12-and-a-half hour time difference, the smells were very new and not very pleasant, it was hot and humid and I was trying to understand why (Indian) culture did the things that they did,” Kerckhoff says. “I don’t know if I ever fully adjusted to the Indian culture, but I began to

love many parts of it after about a month or so.”

Kerckhoff says the sense of community in her SOS team and the relationships she built with the locals helped her transition from American culture to Indian culture.

She says she eventually began to consider India her home.

“We also became very familiar with the city,” Kerckhoff says. “(My teammate) and I joined a dance studio and took classes about three times a week.”

Kerckhoff says she was able to make a few friends who showed her around the local neighborhood and found that many people she met were welcoming and friendly. She says making the effort and immersing herself into the culture helped her significantly.

Matthew Phillips, senior political science major, also found that community was the key to adjusting to life away from home when he studied in Washington, D.C., for a semester.

“It never really felt like I was that far from home because of how close everyone in the program became,” Phillips says.

“I still talk to my friends from it almost every week; we became like a family.”

In India, Kerckhoff says she and her teammates became a family too. They found that doing things they would normally do at home was a great way to become acclimated to unfamiliar territory.

“I went to a coffee shop almost every morning to read the Bible with my team,” Kerckhoff says. “We went around the city to different colleges, restaurants and neighborhoods, then in the afternoon I would go to my dance class. At night, we girls would sit on our couch, eat Nutella and watch chick flicks or Bollywood movies, which really made me feel like (it was) home.”

Kerckhoff and Phillips both say that it is important to jump right into life abroad and have fun.

December in Southern California is, shall we say, dry — far from the snowy postcards of log cabins your parents send out at Christmas time. Sure, Big Bear is only a few hours away, but the snow quickly disappears the second you leave and start driving down the mountain. About five hours north of Riverside lies Mammoth — one of the top winter destinations in California.

Though the town is small and the people are friendly, it is still easy to get lost in the hub of it all so we tested it out for you. Here is a rundown of where to go for food and fun in Mammoth. Plus, we tossed in a few places to just sit, relax and admire the scenery.

Food is a highlight on any trip and Mammoth has dozens of dining options to explore. After a long day on the ski slopes, there are a number of restaurants available and we’ve highlighted some of Mammoth’s best eateries.

SNOWBOARD & SKI At an elevation of more than 11,000 feet, Mammoth Mountain offers some great views. Tickets range from $86 for one day to $227 for three days. If you plan on staying for a while or making a few trips to the area throughout the season, the Mammoth College Pass truly is a bargain.

For $299, students can get a season pass to Mammoth and June mountains as long as they can prove they are taking 12 or more units. Be sure to doublecheck travel dates because there are 18 blackout days.

Mammoth’s Main Lodge is the most convenient option for snow boarders and skiers to rent gear, but other local options are cheaper.

For that sweet tooth, you will want to walk a few stores down to Cathy’s Candy.

(more) things to do SNOWMOBILE Most hiking trails are not accessible during the winter, but do not let that keep you from experiencing the untouched beauty surrounding Mammoth. Take a guided group snowmobile tour or rent a few for you and some friends and hit the trails. Bishop Motosports and DJ’s Snowmobile Adventures are good for solo rides or group tours. If you just want a guided tour, go for Mammoth Snowmobile Adventures.

CROSS COUNTRY & SNOWSHOEING If you want to explore the area on foot but do not feel like sinking your body halfway into the snow, go for these options. Trek across miles of trails throughout the mountains and if you are up for it, you can even go to Devil’s Postpile, a popular spot during summer that is only accessible by ski or snowshoe during the winter. For a longer trail near Mammoth Mountain, go to Tamarack Lodge and Resort. For a short trail, go to the Welcome Center, and they will point you in the right direction from there.

PANORAMA GONDOLA As long as you are not afraid of heights, this can be one of the best activities to do in order to see Mammoth and the surrounding area. Catch the scenic gondola ride from Mammoth Main Lodge to the top of the mountain for $24.

BOATING Boating is still an option in Mammoth during the winter months. If you get there before the lakes freeze over, row out to the middle of one of the several lakes and enjoy the scenery. Twin Lakes is a good place to view Mammoth while Convict Lake is a nice place to get away from the busyness.

With each passing year, more goals are achieved by a man with a passion and a plan for CBU.

he young man, only 38 years old, strides to the podium set up on stage to address the chapel audience. As he begins speaking, the barely noticeable Louisiana drawl makes every word spoken into the microphone more endearing.

“Briefly, who am I?” he begins. “I am a positive thinker. I enjoy life.”

He illustrates his background, his life in Louisiana and Las Vegas. He expands on his time at Houston Baptist University, graduate school at Baylor University and his doctorate at Texas A&M University, leaving the crowd intrigued to hear the rest of his chapel address. He continues on about the future.

“Enough about the past — what about CBC (California Baptist College)?” he asks

the crowd. “The next years, I believe, will serve as a testament as to what can happen when groups of talented, dedicated, focused people demonstrate faith in a common vision by their uncommon motivation and productive work,” he says.

“We will visualize the future. We will roll up our sleeves and we are going to work.

We are going to trust in God’s willingness to bless; and, I believe he is going to bless us tremendously. What do I see on the horizon?

Phenomenal growth is at hand for Cal Baptist.”

As students applaud the new president’s remarks in that 1994 chapel at CBC, they have yet to realize and experience the truth of the words from Dr. Ronald L. Ellis.

Now in his 21st year as president of California Baptist University — a tenure nearly unheard of for college presidents — Ellis quickly became the beacon for the ambitious vision behind the establishment and growth of CBU. His understanding of how to create the conditions for success and uplift the team behind him have created a university that continually moves forward with the plans he shared with the students of California Baptist College in that first chapel address.

In November, as the university commemorated his 20th year at the helm with special events, students had the chance to observe what’s always been right in front of them, to peer behind the scenes at the daily workings of a college president who has given himself over to the task of making CBU what it is today and visualizing what it can become tomorrow.

“We’re not going to understand all the mysteries of life. But that’s not really important this side of heaven,” Ellis says.

“What’s important is that as we go, we look for those opportunities of ministry and service. And it could be anything. Once you start living and viewing it this way, you begin to look for opportunities, and you tend to see what you’re looking for.”

Seeking out those opportunities while maintaining stability, though, requires a flair for improvisation.

“If you’re in a situation where things are changing, how does one navigate through those changes, especially if you have responsibilities for a family or an organization or a group of people? Being true to your values and principles but living very much in the present and leaning to the future. Being nimble is extremely important — i.e. Indiana Jones — deciphering if this is a ball rolling at us in a cave, or snakes in a pit, or poison darts. Grab the bottom of that airplane and get out of there.”

wide-brimmed fedora and bullwhip and display courage and nimbleness.

As a sports enthusiast, Ellis teamed up with vice president Kent Dacus and Dr. Micah Parker, CBU’s athletic director, to move many teams from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to the National Collegiate Athletics Association. Although moving to a larger division means tougher competition for CBU’s teams, several of them came out as conference champions in their first year with the NCAA. Ellis’ office is home to a hefty collection of Lancer athletics memorabilia from throughout his term. Signed softballs, volleyballs, basketballs, trophies and other keepsakes rest behind the glass doors of a large, wooden hutch behind his desk. With 19 teams in the NCAA and

THE BOW TIE CHALLENGE

F

ew people have seen Dr. Ronald L. Ellis in a bow tie.

Scarcely any have challenged him. Even fewer have worn a bow tie on campus every Tuesday from November to April. But Trent Ward, Associated Students of California Baptist University executive president, is not afraid to tackle all three challenges at once for a friendly competition with Ellis. Call Air Force One — we’ll need some air traffic control with all the presidents around here.

Some call it crazy. We call it the pursuit of what you want. Go get ‘em Trent.

35 national championships in his legacy, it’s hard not to be proud of the accomplishments from athletics alone.

But athletics are just one aspect of CBU that has grown exponentially from that first day in chapel in 1994 with students of CBC. Back then, the school had 808 students, with a goal of 1,000 students set for the following fall.

When the next fall rolled around, the school had 1,226 students. Enrollment jumped to 1,687 the following year and 2,009 the year after that.

“We went from a place that had empty beds, empty parking spaces, empty chairs and classes, to none of the above,” Ellis says. “Now we have to build capacity, and we’re still building capacity, whether it’s acquiring hardware for beds or parking spaces. We brought on two food venues this year, and a new campus store and so forth. That’s part of the fun — to keep the growth going.”

The stereotype of the driven, successful

PURSUIT: How and why did you come up with your bow tie challenge with Dr. Ellis?

TRENT WARD: It was literally on the spot — it hit me.

I want students to view Dr. Ellis as a down-to-earth guy and I feel like bow ties do that to people automatically. So we were talking about bow ties and I was just like ‘I want to see him in a bow tie. What can I say or do to see him in a bow tie.’ I was actually shooting high wearing a bow tie every Tuesday. I thought if I wear one every Tuesday for five months, he might wear one for a day.

PURSUIT: Do you have a lot of bow ties?

TRENT WARD: No, I might hint at him to reach out for some bow tie resources.

PURSUIT: So are you going to document this? Will people just start noticing you wearing bow ties every Tuesday?

TRENT WARD: That’s pressure. I may not advertise it until I get some more bow ties. I currently have three bow ties, one of which is a clip-on and two are tie it yourself.

PURSUIT: Which do you prefer?

TRENT WARD: Oh, tie. You have to tie it yourself. It shows the true mark of classiness.

PURSUIT: So every Tuesday until April 7?

TRENT WARD: Yep, April 7. It’s been an undercurrent movement, Bow Tie Tuesday. If we get Dr. Ellis to endorse it, that would be a cool way to see the connected bridge between administration and students — you know, Bow Tie Tuesday; everybody’s got to wear a bow tie.

businessman is often one of ruthless pragmatism, of cold confidence and of distance from his support system of employees. Ellis couldn’t be farther from that mold. A down-to-earth man, he’s always willing to strike up a conversation with students. Sometimes, when the opportunity presents itself, he even gets outside and throws the ball around.

“We played catch last year at recess,” says Trent Ward, senior marketing major and executive president of Associated Students of California Baptist University. “He was throwing out the first pitch for the Recess championship wiffle ball game and I was catching the first pitch. You know, even presidents have to warm up. We played catch for 10 minutes and it was a lot of fun. He’s always been pleasant to bump into; he’s very engaging and energetic and enthusiastic and funny.

He’s very relatable.”

Ellis, recently named one of the Top-25 most influential people in Riverside over the last quarter century, is an extremely accomplished individual and a hard-worker at heart.

His tireless efforts have been evident since his first job mowing lawns at the age of 8.

Perhaps his dream of turning a struggling Baptist college into the

thriving community CBU is today was one he had envisioned since childhood.

Maybe expanding the school from 59.5 acres in 1994 to today’s 160 acres was an ambition he wouldn’t abandon. It may seem as though these milestones have come together without a hitch but behind each peak is a man dedicated to the advancement of a renowned university, providing a sense of fulfillment to anyone who walks the campus.

“He is the one that has cast the vision, led us and driven us,” says Kent Dacus, vice president for Enrollment and Student Services. “Every area on campus can be attributed to his leadership. He is very passionate about what he does and who he is. He is passionate about his leadership and passionate about CBU and being the best. He wants everyone to be their best.”

The young man on the chapel stage in 1994 had lofty dreams for his presidential term. Countless numbers of those dreams have become reality because of the drive and dedication he presented that day at the podium. As many of his dreams continue to come into existence, Dr. Ronald L. Ellis looks to the future for the success and enduring joy of those at California Baptist University.

I

t is easy to see President Ellis as the perfect mixture of extraordinary visionary and down-to-earth friend. He is a president that enjoys spending time with students and envisioning a future for them. He isn’t afraid to mingle, joke around or enjoy some Lancer Lane Celebration ice cream with those nearby. He even plays catch with students from time-to-time. Ellis is a star, and here are just a few reasons that prove it.

fter a few years in ministry, Ellis says he felt competent at pastoring but it didn’t make his heart race as it should, yet he still felt a calling to Christian ministry. He wanted to serve God while using his gifts and interests and began exploring his options. An opportunity arose for which he applied an analogy: one about a biology student told multiple times by his professor to study a fish in

I often think about Indiana Jones.

Remember the early movies? In all the Indiana Jones movies, he is going from one snake pit to poison darts chasing him, to something else and something else. Sometimes life seems to be an Indiana Jones movie doesn’t it? But it can be wonderful, as more obstacles are placed in our way and we

“After a while he’s getting really frustrated because he’s not given very much direction (on what to look for) but after a couple weeks of doing that he really begins to delve into this fish.

He begins to learn everything he needs to know about this fish to the point he becomes an expert about that fish,” Ellis explains.

Ellis mimicked this same method

when offered an interview as president at CBU, requesting every piece of information on the school he could get his hands on. He hunkered down to study his fish.

“I spent about 150 hours preparing for the interview. I studied my fish and so I requested a number of things to get ready for the interview. You name it, I wanted it. I literally got two boxes of materials mailed,” Ellis says.

ne of my favorite things is to observe people,” Ellis says. “I love seeing people enjoying (CBU) – students walking to class smiling, people having conversations.

That’s probably the most pleasing thing, seeing people smile and have a good time. I’ve always loved college

because you’ve got highly motivated people who are trying to better themselves. And that’s an exciting place to be, whether it’s academically, athletically, spiritually or socially: To be able to be around people who are living a full life and are optimistic.

students — that’s why we’re here. To see students come in as freshmen and grow and develop and mature, and see them graduate and realize they’re not finished but it’s been great to be along the journey. To know what you do each day is hopefully having a positive impact on people.”

Has Hollywood lost its touch filming and producing original ideas? In a culture where creativity seems to be on the backburner, Pursuit went behind the scenes on what happens inside the minds of those creating new blockbuster hits.

T

he lights in the cinema dim.

Families and friends wait in anticipation for the movie to begin. As the previews play, the screen shows teasers for films coming soon. But something is not right. These upcoming films seem to be recycled stories told before.

Over the years, Hollywood has produced countless films based on popular and trending franchises. Although some original movies are produced, sequels and reboots seem to outnumber them.

Micheal Eaton, associate professor of film studies and film production at California Baptist University, says he believes the main reason for Hollywood producing adaptations and sequels is because many studio executives today come from business, legal and marketing backgrounds. Eaton says they rarely have relationships with creative talent the way studio executives had in the past.

“Hollywood studios have come to rely

on the marketability of their ‘product,’” Eaton says. “Before a movie even gets a green light at the studios, the marketing ideas and materials have already been put into motion.”

Though Hollywood seems to rely on rehashed ideas, Easton says there have also been a number of original scripts produced by studios in recent years including “Gravity,” “The Croods,” “Elysium” and “Pacific Rim.” “Adapted material is highly original in its execution and the studios are, in fact, making some original movies,” Eaton says. “‘Frozen’ is an example of very high quality entertainment and box office gross by adapting an 1844 Danish story.”

Christina Lee Storm, international and independent movie producer, has worked on screenwriting and visual effects for more than 20 years. Her most notable work includes her Christian film, “To Save A Life,” and her role as production supervisor for the Academy Award

winning silent film, “The Artist.”

Storm says the big reason Hollywood relies on rehashed films is because of economics. She also says she does not think it is necessarily a wise way to look at movies in a long-term strategy. “(Hollywood) is starting to shape the pace for the audience,” Storm says.

“What’s going to happen is audience members are going to grow dissatisfied with most of the franchise-film concept coming out because it doesn’t fill up all their expectations.”

Although they are not as notable today, original ideas are still being produced and financed through independent production companies, say Storm and Eaton.

Companies such as Annapurna Pictures, Alcon Entertainment and Walden Media are examples of independent production companies that are financed by billionaires whose often original movies are being distributed by the studios. That original material will need financial peers and distribution behind the project and those that decide to be involved with the production will see success.

“Original ideas for movies often come from proven Hollywood directors with major talent, including Guillermo Del Toro for ‘Pacific Rim’ and Alfonso Cuaron for ‘Gravity,’” Eaton says. “Unproven directors, like myself, have a much harder time getting original scripts greenlit within the studios and are, therefore, much more likely to be working with independent production companies to get movies made.”

Storm says the most original aspects of these films nowadays are visual effects because the writers are creating something out of nothing.

“What ends up on screen from that source material to the feature film, there is going to be originality in (visual effects) because of how the director makes the film different,” Storm says.

Storm says she respects novel adaptations more than a rehashed movie

or sequel because she sees it as a way of getting young adults to read.

“I hope it’s not a fad because then what would happen is that the influence the novel had on society and culture will start to grow, which is great. Books are so important in our culture and society,” Storm says.

Though many might see this as a fad, Storm says novel adaptations can have a positive effect on young adults.

“In media what direction are we, especially for teens, guiding them toward?

Is the material focusing the reader or audience to be only self-centered or is the material allowing them to be a servant to society and asking how can I make a difference in the world?” Storm says.

Both Storm and Eaton say they do not consider recycled movie ideas as creative, but screenwriters and directors are hired to bring some original ideas and a fresh new

“You can have a film that is trending, but if the story isn’t solid, that doesn’t matter. People might see it but it is not going to have any kind of longterm influence on them,” Storm says.

“Really strong material goes beyond the trends people are interested in because the characters are so truthful and the journey they take us on is interesting and intriguing.”

Movies have effective ways of narrating stories. Whether the story is telling something new or old, if done right, it should be able to leave an impression on its audience for years to come.

ith a history of performing for college students, Citizens & Saints said their visit to California Baptist University was memorable and hope to be back soon.

This indie-rock band from Seattle is bringing a new energy and their own twist to the Christian music scene. After their recent concert, lead singer Zach Bolen talked with Pursuit about the band’s new album, journey together, experience in the music industry and more.

Pursuit : How did the band come together and how did this shape the band as a whole?

Zach Bolen: We started as a church band at Mars Hill Church in Seattle. Initially, we focused on taking familiar hymns and doing something to them that was a little bit different than what people had heard before. The congregation we were singing to really shaped our sound because we saw it as less about five guys in a band and more about all of God’s people coming together and singing praise to him. We’ve always seen it as a collaborative process. (We know) that as soon as we step away from leading the

church and being personally invested in it we lose the heartbeat of what we’re about. It’s something we started with and something we want to continue with as we go forward.

Pursuit : Does the band have a favorite song to preform?

Bolen: As far as hymns go, one of my favorite is “Nothing but the Blood.” One reason I love that song is how cool it is to have 2-year-olds and 80-year-olds singing together. I really like to take a step back and take in that image. Another one I really like is “Praise to the Lord.” Our arrangement to that one gives more room

to think about what you are singing.

Pursuit : Where does the band find inspiration?

Bolen: Our greatest inspiration, even if we are not viewing it as that, will always be God’s word. Sometimes we fail in that area and need to regroup and refocus. From a musical standpoint, what inspires us is the music we love. We pour everything we have into making music that we believe in and love. Then (we) trust that people are going to respond and appreciate it in the same way we do.

Pursuit : What’s your experience been like as a Christian in the music industry?

Bolen: Early on we made a commitment as a band to be focused on writing and singing gospel songs and to do so in a way that encourages and helps local ministries. We want to be known as a band that loves Jesus and loves to write songs about him that will hopefully encourage and lead others. We’re grateful to have this opportunity and to see what God has done. We just sing about what we love. I think that’s why when people hear us they don’t think we sound like typical Christian music. We’ve had a really positive experience with it all, making some great friends along the way, and hope to continue to do that.

Pursuit : Writing, performing, traveling, ministry: Do you have a favorite part of the daily activities of being a musician?

Zach Bolen says playing for college students has always been a highight for the band and visiting CBU reminded the band of their roots.

Pursuit : Least favorite part?

Bolen : The thing that’s always going to Bolen: My favorite part is definitely be a struggle for us, but is something I writing music. I love leading, but I love definitely am learning to grow in, is the songwriting. Worship music is one of culture that has been created within the the hardest genres to write. I say that Christian music world. The idea that because as men and women who have been created by God, who is very creative, bands are just performers. I don’t think that is an appropriate posture to have. One we are called to something a little bit thing that was very cool about playing at more than just the status quo. Not only CBU was that while it was a show, it was must you write music that is creative clear we were there to worship Jesus. Part and melodies that are singable, but you of the dislike is that I constantly have to also have to make sure they align with break down those walls, but I’m happy to what the Word says. There are so many do that because it hits to the core of what components that make it challenging. I we are called to be, which is worshipers enjoy the puzzle of bringing a new song of Jesus. We are not called to worship together.

Bolen: It’s cool to know that in the few years we’ve been a band we have had many different people participate and be a part of what God has done. Other aspects of the journey have shown God really growing us as men and understanding more and more of the vision he has for this band. That has been our biggest journey: God helping us understand what it is he wants us to do with the band and what it is he wants us to focus on.

WE ARE NOT CALLED TO WORSHIP WHAT HAS BEEN CREATED BUT TO WORSHIP OUR CREATOR. ZACH BOLEN

Bolen: The title of the album, “Join the Triumph,” is very intentional. We believe part of our role is to call people into participatory response. This album is about calling people into the triumph of Jesus and his work. It is a call for people to participate in the worship of God — not just people who know God, but also people who don’t.

Our hope is that the gospel message will be clear and people will be saved through it. The album has a lot of variety that I hope people will enjoy. The main theme we want to hit home is this call to God’s people to join in the outward expression of love and gratitude to God — singing, shouting, clapping to actively worship a great God.

BEHIND THE SCENES Pursuit : If you could collaborate with one of today’s popular Top-40 artists, who would it be?

Bolen: Bryan Adams.

Bolen: “Long Gone Before Daylight” – The Cardigans.

Pursuit: What was the first song you learned to play on the guitar?

Pursuit: Since you share the same hometown as Starbucks, what is your order?

Bolen: “Silent Night.”

Bolen: I actually don’t drink coffee but if I do go there I usually get a hot chocolate.

Sometimes I get crazy and get a salted caramel hot chocolate.

Bolen: Definitely flying.

Pursuit: What is a meaningful Bible verse for you today?

Bolen: I am constantly drawn to, recently especially, Ephesians 2. Remembering that we are the workmanship of Christ. It is not my work that I get to boast in but God’s.

Pursuit: If you had to delete all of the music off of you iPhone except for one album, which would you keep?

Pursuit: If you could have one super power what would it be?

Pursuit: What is your favorite internatinal desination you have visted?

Bolen: I really loved Poland. I loved it because the history there is just so different from the U.S. Pursuit: Since you are a musician in Seattle I must ask, how many flannel shirts do you own?

Bolen: Well, I’m wearing one right now!

I think only four, but they are often circulated.

ost might agree that at some point in our lives we have experienced difficulties and have focused on overcoming them.

Jonathan Blair has captured the essence of human triumph in his new film, “Found on South Street.”

The film centers around Arthur Hodges Jr., a deaf man who through a series of lifealtering events discovers where his identity truly lies. This powerful message provides the vision of Blair, the film’s writer and director and sophomore film studies major at California Baptist University. His father, Danny Blair, professor of American Sign Language and director of the Center for Deaf Studies at CBU, serves as the film’s producer.

Jonathan says he drew most of his PURSUIT | 51

inspiration from his mother, Angela, who is deaf. Growing up, he was made aware of the obstacles deaf people face and was able to write the film’s storyline with his mother in mind.

“Many of the events that happen to the main character (Arthur) are based on her (Angela) and other people’s real-life experiences and struggles,” Jonathan says.

Despite Jonathan’s crucial role in the creation of the film, he was not the only Lancer to participate. He was joined by fellow CBU student Austin Cary, senior liberal studies major.

Cary decided to get involved in the film after reading the script. Although he had never acted before, he was approached

by Jonathan to be the lead actor for the film. Right away, Cary knew the type of impact this film would have and wanted to promote it.

“I didn’t know what to expect, I just knew I wanted to be a part of it,” Cary says.

the campus provided most of the film’s backdrop. The support of CBU behind the deaf community and the film is what drove this team to make something of which they would be proud.

“Seeing it come together onscreen gets me teary-eyed as I think back to all the challenges and miracles God has brought us through,” Danny says. “The fact God gave us such favor with volunteers within our CBU community, helping us in so many ways, allowed us to create what could easily be a six-figure film for less than $20K. But that’s the big picture; there have been smaller miracles all along the way.”

According to Jonathan Blair, “Found on South Street” is set to premiere in December both locally and nationally, with special screenings on the CBU campus as well as the Regal Riverside Plaza Stadium 16 theater.

“We want more opportunities for everyone to access the film, so we are hoping to have captions and possibly a

Putting in personal time and resources are the small sacrifices the actors put forth in order to raise awareness of something in which they all believe.

“We would work for 16-18 hours straight with short breaks. We were determined to finish the film because it provides a good start for people to become more aware of the deaf community,” Cary says. “We want viewers to know that the deaf community, as well as the hearing, can do everything and they’re not limited by anything. This film provides people with hope in finding their purpose and identity in life.”

voice over in the theater,” Cary says. “It’s weird for me to think that I could be on the big screen, but I’m ecstatic. However, most importantly, I want to honor God with all that I do. My identity is not in the world and God has a plan for me as well as others, regardless of who you are.”

These words cause one to think about self-identity and it is clear that the film’s team is passionate about creating thoughtprovoking art. Many words could be used to describe “Found on South Street” but perhaps the best summarization is within the words of the director himself.

“I believe in the power it has to reach deaf people and others with the love of Jesus in a way they wouldn’t expect while also raising awareness, shedding light on the issues and triumphs that deaf people experience everyday,” Jonathan says. “My goal is keep telling stories any way I can.”

Why Church Is Not

Music graduate student Benjamin Halsne says he enjoys leading worship at his church because it is a chance for him to serve God with his talents.

We expect church to cater to all of our needs. Do they have the right music, the right people and the right programs?

If not, we are out the door. But here’s the thing — church isn’t all about you.

E

ver since I was a child, church has been a major part of my life.

I know all the stories, all the routines and all the right things to say.

But once I hit high school, church started to get boring. I began to think I knew everything, so nothing was ever exciting or new to me. I went to church to be filled up and entertained, and when it stopped doing that I wanted to change churches.

I started to treat church like a shopping mall. If a store doesn’t have exactly what I want, why stay any longer than I have to?

I would just move to the next shop. My consumerist mindset spilled into my idea of church, as well.

Maybe you have experienced this. You are the churched kid who is tired of the same routine every Sunday. Maybe you are not, though. You might be the person who is new to church and not exactly sure what to look for in a good church. Whichever category you fall into, the way to find a good church is to make one.

When I was in high school, I went on several mission trips. That was when I realized what Christianity is actually about: serving. We all get stuck in the rut that church is the place where we go to get spiritually fed, but that is not its only purpose. The church is to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

major at California Baptist University, attends East Hills Community Church and realized this at a young age. “My dad instilled in us the truth that the church was not just a community that was to meet our needs but was also a place and group in which we were to invest,� Gomez says.

Authentic Christianity comes from

living an authentic life like Jesus, and he spent most of his time serving others.

The times when I have felt closest to God and strongest in my faith have been when I was serving other people.

Whether it was in Guatemala building houses, in Kenya leading a kids rally or here in the United States working the

nursery at church, serving has proved to be an essential part of growing closer to God. Music graduate student Benjamin Halsne has been leading worship at East Hills Community Church since high school and has since become the worship arts administrator. Halsne said he originally got involved after he became interested in music and wanted to put his gifts to use at church. He said he has been able to cultivate his passion for music by serving in his church.

“When I was in high school and junior high, (college students) were the people who I looked at even more than my youth pastor,” Halsne says. “They were the people who had the strongest influence in my life growing up. If I’m not willing to be there to have the same influence, then I feel like that’s going to be missing a link there – a very crucial link.”

Not only is serving in a local church a way to grow closer to God personally, but it is a way to help others grow closer to God, as well. As college-aged students, we hold influence over the younger people in our lives. They look to us as examples.

There are teenage girls at my church who struggle with their faith and with the world around them. It would be great if they would talk to their parents about it, but the reality is they are not doing that. They are going to their friends, to the media and to celebrities for advice on how to be happy and live a “good” life. They need older people to look up to and be able to talk to about what they’re going through.

But my church is not the only one with this issue. There are young teenagers at every church who are searching for role models and we cannot be those if we don’t show up.

I made the mistake of thinking church was about me – about what I could get out of it. I forgot that church is supposed to be a community of believers where everyone contributes.

A church is not measured by its booming sound system or its number of young, single adults. It is not even measured by its attendance numbers on a Sunday morning. It is measured by how effective it is to the community it serves.

Churches should not have to impress you with their shiny toys so you won’t run out the door. They shouldn’t have to act like salesmen to get you to stay.

You will never find the “perfect” church.

It doesn’t exist so stop hopping around trying to find it.

Find a church with a committed body of believers and figure out how you can serve. You don’t have to lead worship or preach the sermon on Sundays. It might be as simple as taking some of the teenagers out for coffee and asking them about their lives. You have a specific skill-set so find out how and where you can use it best.

Church is not about getting, it’s about giving. It’s God’s Plan A to bring the world the good news. There is no Plan B. So what are you doing to bring people to him?

Essential Christmas A GIFT IDEAS

s Christmas quickly approaches, we all have the same question on our minds: “What should I get my loved ones?”

With so many different personalities and hobbies, it’s often hard to pinpoint the perfect gift. Money and gift cards are always easy, but try thinking outside the box this holiday season and take a look at these gift ideas.

FOR YOUR BOYFRIEND:

If your boyfriend loves his music, the gift for him might be as simple as buying him a new pair of headphones because his old ones are worn-out from listening to music 24/7. An iTunes gift card is also always good so he can download his favorite tunes. For a more memorable gift, find a cheap, local concert for an up-and-coming band and spend a night rocking out together.

FOR YOUR GIRLFRIEND:

If your girlfriend loves to travel, find a map or a travel book for her next trip to help her prepare. Or maybe buy a box and glue a picture of a place she wants to travel so she can start saving money in it for the trip. Take it one step further and buy her some travelfriendly items such as a pocketknife, rechargeable external battery or an add-on iPhone lens.

FOR YOUR ROOMMATE:

For the roommate who loves to cook, make a cookbook of his or her favorite recipes, subscribe him or her to a food magazine or find a unique cookbook with recipes to challenge his or her cooking skills. If cooking isn’t the thing but eating definitely is, put his of her favorite foods in a giant bag with some festive decorating. Or, get a mason jar and put all the ingredients of a cookie or pasta recipe inside for an all-in-one meal or dessert — but don’t forget to include the recipe, too.

FOR MOM:

You could give her the gift of service this holiday season and make a coupon book of chores and things you will do that your mom likes. Moms love homemade crafts, so get creative and find a family picture and, with the help of some Scrabble tiles, spell out the names of all your family members. If you’re not the crafty type, try a sensitive touch and buy her a nice bouquet of flowers with some seeds to plant in her garden. Finally, if she is a coffee-lover, get a French press or an exotic brand of coffee for her to try. The Pursuit staff recommends Wild Goose, a local brand with a charitable bent.

FOR DAD:

Take him out to his favorite restaurant and maybe even throw in a movie while you’re at it. Along the same lines, buy him his favorite movie and spend time watching it with him, or introduce him to one of your favorite books or TV shows.

Then kick back and talk about it with him.

Or maybe he is the dad who is always breaking things? Equip his electronics with the newest protective cases to avoid the next disaster before it happens.

If she’s girly in any way, buy her a new outfit complete with jewelry, nail polish and shoes. If the prospect of picking

all that out overwhelms you, buy her a subscription to Birchbox, a monthly gift box filled with beauty supplies that will be delivered straight to her door. You could even buy supplies for a quick DIY project you find on her Pinterest and create the project together.

FOR YOUR BROTHER:

Guys are simple: video games. If gaming isn’t his thing, treat him to lunch at his favorite restaurant and catch up.

Maybe he loves to exercise? Buy him a gym subscription or some new weights.

If he thinks the zombie apocalypse is coming, play on that. Buy some of his favorite eats to survive along with a flashlight and his favorite zombie movie.

Put it in a zombie-proof container and your brother will be ready when the zombies come knocking.

FOR THE MONEY-LOVERS:

For those who only want money for Christmas, get creative with how you give cash to them by finding an old pizza box and putting the money in a circle in place of the “dough.” Another option is to use an empty box of chocolates and fold the money to fit in the little squares where the chocolate used to be. If those are too subtle, buy an umbrella and attach the money to strings on the underside of the umbrella. Nothing like raining money.

RUBY RED RECIPES

Peppermint mochas, peppermint bark, peppermint ice cream, chocolate peppermint cookies.

A surefire sign the holidays are approaching is the blitz of peppermint products in grocery stores. Peppermint may have the spotlight, but there’s one traditional holiday staple that remains underrated — cranberries. There’s just something about these ruby-red berries that screams winter in the most simplistic and refined way.

DRINK: CRANBERRY CHILLER INGREDIENTS 18 ounces chilled cranberry juice 18 ounces chilled red grape juice 8 ounces chilled ginger ale 1 lime

STEPS 1. Mix juice and ginger ale then pour over ice.

2. Garnish with lime wedge and serve.

APPETIZER: CRANBERRY SALSA INGREDIENTS 2 cups fresh cranberries 1 bunch cilantro 2 cups pomegranate arils 2 cups fresh pineapple 1/2 cup yellow onion 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 1 jalapeño

STEPS 1. Dice all ingredients and combine in mixing bowl.

2. Squeeze orange juice over entire mixture.

3. Mix and add salt and pepper to taste.

4. Serve with tortilla chips.

DESSERT: WHITE CRANBERRY POPCORN INGREDIENTS 6 cups popped popcorn 1 cup white chocolate 1 cup craisins 1 cup macadamia nuts 1 teaspoon cinnamon

STEPS 1. Spread out popcorn on a baking sheet lined with wax paper.

2. Melt white chocolate and drizzle over popcorn.

3. Mix in craisins and macadamia nuts.

4. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

5. Allow popcorn to set before breaking into pieces.

ENTREE: TURKEY SAGE MEATBALLS IN CRANBERRY GLAZE INGREDIENTS Meatballs: 1 1/4 pounds ground turkey 1/4 cup plain bread crumbs 1/4 cup ricotta cheese 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons chopped sage 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

STEPS

Glaze: 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 3 cups fresh cranberries 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon orange zest 2 tablespoons ginger 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

Meatballs: 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

2. Combine all meatball ingredients in a large bowl and mix gently.

3. Form meatballs one inch thick and fry in a skillet with vegetable oil over medium heat until golden brown.

4. Place meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Glaze: 1. Combine all glaze ingredients except for the cayenne in a medium pot and simmer over medium heat for 10-15 minutes.

2. Turn off heat and stir in cayenne pepper.

3. Strain into a sauce pan, making sure to press through any remaining juice and pulp.

4. Heat glaze over medium heat, then reduce and let thicken. Add meatballs and coat with glaze.

ARMS: ELEVATOR PUSHUPS BEGINNER – 4 sets of 6

These are regular pushups but in slow motion. Go from your knees and lower yourself to the ground slowly while counting to three. Hold position when you come up.

INTERMEDIATE – 4 sets of 5

Standard pushup position with your feet on the ground, still taking three seconds to lower yourself and holding at the top.

ADVANCED – 4 sets of 6

Continue doing slow pushups, but instead of just holding the position at the top, turn your body sideways and lift one arm in the air. Hold for five seconds.

LEGS: LUNGES BEGINNER – 4 sets of 12

With both feet facing forward, take a big step forward and then lean your body into your front leg. Next, bend your back knee until it almost touches the ground. Come up and repeat with the other leg.

INTERMEDIATE – 4 sets of 10

Add a weight; 5-10 pounds is recommended.

ADVANCED – 4 sets of 8

Do a regular lunge then jump as you come up, switching legs while in the air.

ABS: LEG LIFTS BEGINNER – 3 sets of 10

Lie flat on the ground with your hands face-down on the floor. Lift your legs in the air then slowly lower them back down to the ground.

INTERMEDIATE – 3 sets of 10

When you lower your legs, don’t let them touch the ground.
