I

woke up at 0500 hours a few times this past month to observe our Reserve Off icer’s Training Corps cadets and cadre. As the pre-dawn darkness gave way to the sun’s glow, I witnessed their structural discipline give way to earnest affection for one another.

Finding balance in life is not easy.

It has been diff icult for me recently to understand the balance between rigorous, vital theology and glittering, blithe faith. I struggle with processing decisions that throw standards and people out of balance. I fear the extremes of doubt and pride. I f ind myself clinging to the unrealistic ideals of one side of the scale of life, f lashing my eyes at the other and refusing to open my mind.

Sometimes balance does not appear to be equal. Compensating for those around you who need help may mean adding more to your side of the scale, but maybe during another season they will do the same for you. A two-sided scale may not look even, but does it indeed balance out?

While struggling to f ind balance in all areas of my life, I have read this passage from Isaiah and imagined

our great God and how “ he’s got the whole world in his hands.” From childhood days singing this song in the back seat of my mom’s Bronco, I have memorized these words and never once did I imagine how those sweet, carefree words could affect me as an adult. The prophet Isaiah says God's hands hold the world in a balance. He measures the waters and weighs the mountains and yet, he himself is immeasurable.

This puts life into perspective for me because, while the Lord keeps his creation in balance according to the glorif ication of his name, it also shows how small the world and its mysteries are compared to just his hands. In comparison to his splendor, in contrast with his master plan to redeem creation, our lives are but dust that has settled into the creases of his palms, and yet, those palms cradle that dust so preciously. How does that make sense at all? How does affection for mere dust balance out in relation to his power?

The stories in this issue of Pursuit echo the diff icult reverberations of how unbalanced life can be at times. They also portray ways for the weight of life to be shifted accordingly.

There is balance in the equilibrium

of discipline and love in the ROTC program. Graduating athletes may feel thrown off balance as they gaze into a future without their sport. In ministry, or just in a life dedicated to Christ, we must choose the “road to burnout” or a road of balance. Maybe, balance is also as simple as f inding those unconventional and surprising treasures along an interstate that most of us dread traveling along.

T h i s s pr i n g , w he t he r t he impl icat ions of ba la nce in your own life are simple or profound, be encouraged by our God who holds all things together. We are called upon as Christians to prioritize and be a part of his plan to bring balance back to this lopsided world. We are upheld by his own perfect “true zero” in this scale called life. God equalizes the values and cancels them altogether — something we could never have the power to do ourselves.

Instagram is a place where waiting rooms are bypassed, our attention spans are allowed to be as short as a goldfish’s and our favorite Pinterest quotes are finally put to use to accompany our #ThrowbackThursday.

The majority of Instagram is cliché, predictable and, well, basic. But, hey, that is why we Lancers love it. When you take that gorgeous picture of the waves at Huntington Beach, #BeachLover, or find the perfect angle for your new selfie, #GoodMorning, there is a sense of excitement as you find the best filter and caption to compliment your artistic post. Sometimes, in order to

get that perfect photo, it takes thinking out of the box and looking a little ridiculous while doing it. But it is so worth it!

We follow celebrities, friends, friends of friends, humor accounts and cute animals, scrolling through each day to "like" something we will more than likely forget about as soon as we exit the app. However, we may come across that inspiring photo to replicate sometime in the next two weeks.

From stretching an arm out and almost dropping our phones to get everyone in the photo to standing on chairs in order to show everyone the picture perfect study session, it really does not matter how ridiculous we may look while getting the photo. All that matters is how fabulous the photo looks

once it is filtered and posted. Or maybe the basic photos we take are as hilarious as we look while taking them. Let the "likes" pour in! ➤

Locations to Take Senior Portraits

enior portraits are more than just photographs. They tell a story; the story of a college graduate who persevered through numerous late nights, papers and exams to walk across the stage and claim a degree that once seemed so far out of reach. It is a time to capture celebration and location is key.

Pursuit asked Sarah Bohannan, senior communication disorders major, Lynnae Maki and Korey Baines, senior graphic design majors, about their favorite locations to photograph graduating seniors. These students behind the lens shed light on a few hidden local photo possibilities.

“My goal in a photo shoot is not to get the most amazing shot, although that is great too,” Bohannan says. “It is to capture the person’s personality through my pictures. I see my pictures not just as pictures but as stories of moments that I had the privilege of sharing with people.”

Looking for a “Pinterest-perfect” photo session or creative ideas for your own portraits? Check out these memorable spots:

Elyse DeFoe, junior intercultural studies major, and Sarah Bohannan, senior communication disorders major, practice exposure by shooting in open shade along the Santa Ana River in Riverside.

Downtown Riverside The downtown area offers simplicity with endless nooks and crannies for breathtaking portraits. Brick walls and alleyways provide the perfect location for an edgy, outdoor vibe for photos.

"There are so many different backdrops within one city block and it is normally a convenient place to meet,” Maki says. “Not to mention Molinos coffee shop is close by for a hot drink after the photos are done.”

Explore different areas near the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa for even more picture-perfect opportunities and get creative with the lighting and shadows during different times of the day. On

Saturday mornings, the streets are lined with a Farmers Market where fresh flowers could be a great accessory to this downtown photo shoot.

University of California, Riverside “My current spot that I shoot at would have to be the Botanical Gardens at UCR,” Baines says.

The gardens have countless greenery variations including succulents, roses and herbs in addition to several hiking trails.

Maki says she prefers shooting outdoors because of the natural light.

“Open shade is normally the best for taking senior portraits since it is a softer light,” she says. “I also love the diversity you have when shooting outside.”

Downtown Chino Backgrounds add character, texture and life to a photo. Chino's downtown offers a variety of backdrop options with which to get creative.

“There is a wall on the backside of Owen’s Bistro on D street that I love to take pictures in front of,” Bohannan says.

LACMA and The Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles For those who love the city, make a Los Angeles day out of the senior photo shoot.

“Have fun and don’t be afraid to try something different,” Baines says. “I have found that some of my best photos have been taken off of happy accidents.”

The “Urban Light” display at the LA County Museum of Art has hundreds of restored white street lampposts providing texture and depth to photos. The Griffith Observatory, known for its expansive view of LA, offers endless opportunities for photos with a view. ➤ PURSUIT | 11

Old Towne Orange This up and coming quaint downtown, known as the “Orange Circle,” has several walls with character. When exploring the nearby neighborhoods one will discover historical homes and buildings with vintage window panes. On Lemon Street, typically an hour before sunset, a tree shadow is cast onto a warehouse building adding a beautiful artistic element to a photo. Grab a vintage soda bottle from one of the local stores to use as a prop for this photo shoot.

Maki advises to remember to bring your graduation hat with you and not to take posing too seriously.

“The candid shots are always the best,” Maki says.

As the seasons change, the Botanical Gardens at UCR (below and right) present new atmosphere.

Crystal Cove State Park, Newport Beach With Southern California’s coast having endless opportunities for beautiful beach photos, Crystal Cove is a hidden gem in Newport Beach. Bungalow houses and tide pools are some of the many charming elements of this ideal private beach location for an elegant senior photo shoot.

“There is so much beauty around us that we tend to ignore because we are so consumed in technology,” Bohannan says.

“God made a breathtaking world and being able to capture a small snippet of the beauty through a photo shoot is my favorite.”

Different locations allow senior photo shoots to embody the personality of the subject. Get outside, have fun and enjoy the photos you will look back on for years to come. ◆

ix volunteer hours, five hours of teaching preparation for church, four different staff meetings, three one-onones per day, two papers and one week to accomplish all of this.

Her chest gets tight and her eyes widen as she looks at her to-do list for the week.

Each bullet point whispering, “I need you.”

God has given her these opportunities and it is her responsibility to say “yes” and complete them — no matter the cost. So she will skip a meal or two and run on two hours of sleep. Ministry is about sacrifice, is it not? People are more important.

On the first day, after her third one-onone, she finds 15 minutes to complete her homework assignment before her next class starts — her commitment to doing a “job well done” only extending to anything with the word “ministry” in the job description.

Any time someone asks her how she is doing her response is, “I’m good, just busy.”

After all, she is busy doing good things, so she will never admit it is getting difficult to manage. Her ministry flame is burning out.

Like the wooden blocks in a game of Jenga, she feels that if she pulls one commitment out of her stack, her whole ministry identity will crumble. However, this tower is getting high and it may only be a matter of time until things begin to crumble on their own.

This is a picture of me two years ago. I did not intend for my ministry life to be this way and, frankly, I was too busy to change it. I learned the hard way that saying “no” is sometimes necessary.

Ross Kwong, sophomore Christian studies major at California Baptist University, began doing ministry in high school. His church was going through a transition and did not have a pastor so he stepped in, leading the youth group and doing their Friday night messages.

“After about a year or a year and a half I was tired,” Kwong says. “Every week I would have to come up with a message and I remember I’d do hours of studying and it took a lot out of me.”

During this time, Kwong began experiencing feelings of depression. He says his misunderstanding of rest played a large role in his depression.

“I stopped being a leader, I stopped going to church for a little bit,” Kwong says. “I was just so depressed I couldn’t get out of bed and I really didn’t know what to do. Rest wasn’t restful — all I did was sleep.

That was physical rest but I don’t think that’s the type of rest I needed.”

Kwong says he thought he had ministry under control. He rarely asked for help and counted on no one other than himself.

Through his depression, he realized he could not hold the weight of his ministry with just his own strength. He needed help.

“Seeking help seems like a very scary ➤

thing because you admit that you don’t have everything together,” Kwong says.

Bethany Scott, assistant director of Residence Life, says rest is imperative to ministry. As a mentor to campus resident advisers, Scott says she and her Residence Life team try to be intentional about making sure their RAs are practicing self-care by asking them directly.

Ministry in and of itself is something good. However, sometimes too much of a good thing can become unhealthy.

“If you are doing 15 good things, how are you going to do them well?” Scott asks.

“Our question is, ‘What is the Lord really calling you to right now and what do you need to put the majority of your time to when it comes to things like ministry?’”

Scott says sometimes finding out what God is calling you to do means stepping away from leadership positions.

Stepping down from leadership is difficult to do and, sometimes, people feel they cannot say “no” for fear they will let down those to whom they are ministering.

Natalie Specht, senior liberal studies major, has had ministry experience in her church and has had different roles as a student leader at CBU. Her current leadership role as community adviser for Simmons Hall, paired with her school work and social life, limits her ability to rest, but she recognizes the value of rest and accepts she cannot do everything herself.

“God does not call us to produce followers who are dependent on you and you alone. You are not their savior, he is,” Specht says. “Taking time to rest is an important discipline and doing so is actually a great way of modeling its importance to those in your sphere of influence.”

Scott says those who are struggling with guilt in stepping down or saying “no” to ministry tasks need to ask themselves why they are doing the ministry.

“It’s not about you. The world carries on without you,” she says. “I struggle with the, ‘If I don’t share the gospel with this person or if I don’t do this, what’s going to happen?’ But practicing the art of saying ‘no’ is a really good life skill.”

Scott says the unwarranted pressure we place on ourselves does not mean we should never do ministry. She recommends having 16 | PURSUIT

someone keep you accountable in your rest to ensure your ministry is not becoming unhealthy.

“Sometimes we think we have to do it all and then you’re almost robbing someone else of the joy of that ministry because you are trying to do it all,” Scott says.

Scott also adds that sometimes the worth someone feels when he or she a full plate is specific to our culture and has a tendency to seep into ministry life.

“It’s praised,” Scott says. “If we’re not busy, we feel like we’re not good enough or we’re not productive enough.”

Kwong says resting does two things.

Natalie Specht, senior liberal studies major not God. He continues to say ministry has an eternal impact that can change someone’s life forever but sometimes people get carried away without meaning to.

“If you have that willingness and you have that power it kind of makes you want to become like God,” Kwong says. “What rest does is that it reminds you, ‘OK Ross, you’re not God and you didn’t have to be God.’” The second thing Kwong says rest does is that it gives you the ability to be effective in your ministry.

“I imagine one very sick person because he hasn’t rested in God leading another very sick person who doesn’t rest in God either,” Kwong says. “That’s why at the end of the day it’s OK if I don’t get everything done because I don’t think that was my goal in the first place. My goal in ministry is to be faithful with what God’s given me — my time, my ability — and really stick with that and to understand that God allows time for rest.”

Dr. Dan Wilson, professor of biblical studies, says we can try to balance our

lives perfectly, but often the best ministry opportunities do not happen within the confines of a schedule. Because this has happened so often in his own ministry, he says we must learn to prepare for the unexpected.

“That doesn’t mean planning to do nothing, so we’re not busy when the opportunities come,” Wilson says. “It does mean that we need to be prepared to kick up the pace, work on efficiency and think through priorities before the anticipated schedule gets blown away.”

There also needs to be accountability with not using rest as an excuse to be lazy and never get work done because you are taking care of yourself. Wilson says rest is a result of hard work.

“Take care of yourself, but ministry is all about taking care of others; you must find the balance between the two,” Wilson says.

Dr. Jeff Mooney, associate professor of Old Testament at CBU, has the experience of learning how to live a balanced life since being a pastor at Redeemer Baptist Church and a professor for 10 and a half years.

He says for him the balance comes through delegation and realizing some things have to be sacrificed in order to give the most important things his undivided attention. Sometimes that means picking

one thing over the other. He sees this in the way he relates to his family — while spending time with other families is good, devoting time to his wife and children is more important. He says he will say “no” to the former in order to give his all in the latter.

When you ask yourself why you are doing ministry, Mooney says it becomes easier to pull away from unnecessary things that might present themselves to you in ministry in order to focus on primary things.

“You can’t invest in everybody, you just simply can’t,” Mooney says. “Attempting to is an exercise in absolute futility. Investing in a small group of people and encouraging them to turn around and invest in others is a way to multiply faster and far more efficiently.”

About 2,000 years ago, a woman was caught up with the similar conflict of service and rest. A very important visitor was coming to her home and Martha wanted everything to be perfect. She slaved away in the kitchen, making sure her guests had everything they needed, especially Jesus.

This was all for him, after all.

Being a hostess was a lot of work. She glanced over at her sister, Mary, who seemed to have no concern for the busyness Martha was experiencing.

Frustrated with the lack of help from her sister, Martha went straight to the one she was hosting to file her complaint. Instead of reprimanding her sister, Jesus, the one she desired to please the most, warmly addressed her.

“You are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.

Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Both things are good, but one thing is necessary. One thing is crucial. One thing is better — sitting at the feet of Jesus and simply being in his presence.

There is one "yes" more important than hundreds of other "yeses" you can say. ◆ PURSUIT | 17

An Appointment With

T

he door swings open and reveals a smiling face rushing around to prepare for the busy day ahead.

“Don’t mind me,” she says. “I’ll be right with you.”

She covers her client in a cutting cloth after sitting him down in the black and white leather barber chair that resembles an old car seat.

Old rock songs play in the background while the whirring of the barber’s razor echoes off the walls filled with miscellaneous hubcaps, license plates, gas nozzles and oil pans.

The hands of Veronica “Roni” Lynn, 34, owner of Motor Head Barber Shop on Adams Street in Riverside, glide knowingly with the comb and razor over the client’s hair as she smiles brightly and makes polite conversation about the shop she has created.

“I’ve been around cars my entire life,” Lynn says. “My dad buys cars, fixes them up, then flips them around and sells them.

We actually came up with the idea (for the barber shop) together. We just went in the backyard and started picking stuff up.”

She pulls out a squirt bottle and sprays some water on the hair of Mark Machado, assistant golf coach at California Baptist University before combing through his short, blond undercut.

“I feel really comfortable coming here,” Machado says. “It can be intimidating for a guy to come into a haircut place. The first time I came in I had no idea what I wanted.

I was like, ‘Can you help me? I have no idea what I’m doing.’”

Lynn creates a welcoming environment for her clients and the car decorations spark conversation among her clientele. She says her favorite decoration in the shop is the one hanging around her workstation mirror.

“This is a 1934 gas pump handle,” she says, pointing to the mock mirror frame.

“It was so rusted and wrecked. I found it underneath an original gas pump, cleaned it up and sent it to get polished.”

Lynn and her father will get up at 5 a.m. some days to search for car parts at Mark Machado, CBU assistant golf coach, enjoys conversing as Roni trims his hair and pays meticulous attention to detail.

The assortment of auto parts makes Motor Head Barber Shop one of a kind. Roni Lynn knows each piece well and she is able to tell the story behind every one.

“Ever since I was a kid my dad has been collecting cars,” she says. “I watched him redo things in the backyard. He’s just a car guy. We both are. We’re motor heads, I guess you can say.”

Lynn grew up in Riverside, and two weeks after graduating from Arlington High School, she joined the Army. However, her career in the military was cut short because of an injury.

“I broke my hip and femur and was medically discharged,” Lynn says. “I had to figure out what to do with my life. I had to figure out my Plan B.” Lynn’s “Plan B” was cosmetology school, though she says she did not take it seriously at first. When she earned her cosmetology license, she began cutting and styling women’s hair only to discover her dislike for it.

“I hated it,” Lynn says. “It was too time-consuming. My attention span is too small.”

Laughing at herself, Lynn greets a walkin and lets him know how long it will be until she can attend to him.

Lynn returns to her current client’s haircut.

“I decided to try men’s hair instead,” she says. “I fell in love with it. I didn’t want to do anything else. This spot here was probably the best location we found in Riverside because it has so much traffic.”

Lynn says CBU ROTC recognized her convenient proximity to the university and often sends cadets over to get their fade haircut.

“I feel like I am giving back (by cutting hair for ROTC),” Lynn says.

Lindsey Gonzalez, 26, Motor Head Barber Shop employee, says she has a lot to learn from Lynn.

“Roni is a great teacher. She knows what she’s doing, very professional. She looked at what I had to offer and said I had talent to work with,” Gonzalez says.

Setting down the razor, Lynn picks up a blow-dryer and turns it on. She raises her voice above the noise and says she likes her job because she is able to indulge in her people-person side.

“I love to meet new people, I love to laugh,” she says, “You never know who you’re going to meet.”

She uses the blow dryer to clear trimmed hair off the cutting cloth and sets it down at her station, looking around her barber shop with a closed-lipped, contemplative grin.

“It’d be fun to open up a chain of Motor Head someday,” Lynn says. “I don’t know though — just living one day at a time, I guess.”

Three walk-ins and one appointment later, Roni Lynn begins cleaning her tools before welcoming her next customer to her chair to chat about life and cars while giving him a haircut. ◆ PURSUIT | 19

Using collaborative community to end human trafficking.

A

glint of sunlight reflects off the small divots on a small, hammered piece of brass. The first and largest brass circle is connected with four others that are slightly smaller, two on each side hanging from a necklace chain.

There is also a glint in her eyes.

Lindsey Malcolm, graphic designer at International Sanctuary and 2013 California Baptist University alumna, wears the Stella Necklace from the winter 2015 line of PURPOSE Jewelry, created by the hands of a sex-trafficking survivor in Mumbai, India. iSanctuary exists to provide housing, counseling, medical care, education and job skill training for women rescued from sex trafficking in Orange County, Calif. and Mumbai, India. In collaboration with other organizations, iSanctuary has been asked to extend its aftercare program to 10 different countries, including Mexico, Cambodia, the Philippines and Taiwan by the year 2020.

After graduating, Malcolm was seeking to work with victims of human trafficking.

This is a desire she acquired while taking a class taught by Dr. Amy Stumpf, professor of society and religion at CBU, and reading the book, “Half the Sky.” “I hadn’t really heard at all about human trafficking before that point,” Malcolm; says. “So as I was doing research, I was completely shocked that there are more people enslaved today than at any other time in history and felt really compelled to do more.”

Crowds walking the streets of Mumbai look very different from Orange County, feet moving beneath colorful saris instead of tight-f itting jeans. Conversations brushing past ears are spoken in Hindi instead of California slang. Despite cultural

LIFESTYLE differences in the crowded streets, the people are strung together by a commonality — some faces pass by unnoticed, some exploited and enslaved.

Human trafficking is a term used to describe the complex issue regarding the commoditization of people. According to a study conducted by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, human trafficking can be identified in two main forms — forced labor (about 20 percent) and sexual exploitation (about 80 percent).

Statistics cannot grasp the full extent of human trafficking to give a specific number of how many millions are currently being enslaved and what small percentage ever find freedom.

With the awareness of this injustice, Malcolm also became aware of the call to followers of Christ to participate in his global purpose of making all people right with himself.

Stumpf says the correct definition of justice is the right use of power.

“We are to use this power to make right relationships,” Stumpf says. “Sometimes the Bible calls it reconciliation; I call it ‘rightification’ — that God’s business is to make things right. He’s been in that business since Adam and Eve sinned.”

Becoming aware of God’s global purpose, Malcolm sought to use her skillset and passion to the work of “rightification” and began to work with iSanctuary.

As founders of iSanctuary sought to address sex trafficking in Orange County and Mumbai, a community began to grow

on both continents. Malcolm says many of the survivors describe this community of iSanctuary as a healthy family. She says this is especially significant since many women were initially sold into sex trafficking by their families or face rejection from family after rescue because of social stigmas.

Wendy Dailey, co-founder of iSanctuary, says walking alongside survivors in their journey to reintegration takes a breadth of collaboration among different organizations.

“When you see all the different components that are needed in order to bring true freedom to a survivor it goes beyond just rescue,” Dailey says.

Dailey says a significant amount of research and reaching out to other organizations already working to bring justice to victims of human trafficking was done before the launch of iSanctuary in 2007. Their research and countless conversations led them to discover one of the greatest needs in survivor aftercare is job-skill training.

“One of the big things is employment, especially after (the women) leave the aftercare homes,” Dailey says. “If they don’t have any education or employable skills, that’s when they are exploited and don’t have any way of bringing in any income.”

The focus on meeting the need for employment and partnering with others already at work enabled the founders to use their own skill sets to make an impact where it was most needed. The PURPOSE jewelry line was formed out of founder

Stephanie Pollaro’s knowledge of jewelrymaking. She sought to use a skill set she already knew and taught it to other women.

“Anybody can help and we need everyone’s efforts,” Malcolm says. “It doesn’t really matter what skillset you have, it can be utilized.”

The job market in Orange County and Mumbai are very different, so many women in Mumbai are trained in jewelrymaking while women in Orange County learn office skills. Malcolm says there is a sense of ownership that has happened organically among the women. From design to shipping, women have begun taking initiative and innovation in these departments and taught the younger women as they go.

Just as collaboration in community is crucial to the healing process of survivors, it is also key among organizations joining the effort to bring justice to victims of human trafficking.

“If this is an issue that you feel called to I would discourage (you) from starting something brand new without doing (your) due diligence,” Dailey says. “There are a million efforts going on right now and before you start something identify the needs, do the research.”

She calls this effort of collaboration and groundwork passion with perspective.

“I would encourage people to look at their daily lives and ask what changes can (they) be making in their daily lives to affect this issue,” Dailey says.

She says real impact is made globally and collectively when consumers use their dollars to support companies, when organizations and brands have ethical standards, and when men take a stand against the sex industry.

H

eavy-eyed and drowsy, I stare at the dullness of the concrete pool deck beneath my feet. My toes are frozen and all I can think about is the warmth and comfort of my bed. Practice is about to start as my coach begins the 10-second countdown to jump in the pool.

Even with clouds of steam rising into the dark skies above, the water still presents an unpleasant invitation.

About to jump into a pool that will awaken my sore muscles and make my skin crawl, I question my decision to become an athlete as I envy the students still sleeping soundly in their cozy beds.

After the initial shock of the cold water passes, I am whipped back into reality realizing life as a student-athlete is a privilege.

Growing up I played a variety of sports such as soccer, softball and basketball.

However, it was the chlorinated community of water polo of which I became most fond.

Fast-forward 13 years — my time as a water polo player is dwindling down to numbers that can be tallied in my head.

Thirty-five games. Eight tournaments.

Four months. These are the countdowns defining the last season of my waterpolo career. With one final semester as a Lancer at California Baptist University,

the painfulness of reality begins to evoke emotions of uncertainty, nostalgia and fear.

As much as I have complained about the countless early morning alarms, grueling workouts, one-point losses and irrational referees, water polo is a pillar in my life and the vision of living without it is difficult to grasp. I have grown up with a tight-knit group of teammates always by my side and the thought of not always having a friend close by to vent to about practice or share endless laughs with makes the transition from a student-athlete to a graduate daunting.

My life has been absorbed by water polo. I have grown accustomed to a lifestyle routine consisting of eating, sleeping and practicing. With this type of schedule on repeat, I have been stuck in the “athlete bubble” for more than half my life — I have not experienced what life is like without the word “athlete” associated with my identity.

Right now my relationship between player and person is inseparable, reinforcing the fear I have for my future. Like most athletes, I have become a target of identity foreclosure — my sport has taken possession of who I am.

My days have been measured by hours training in the pool; my needs have been focused around sleep and protein; my emotions have been controlled by wins and losses.

Investing most of their lives into a ➤ PURSUIT | 23

sport, some athletes may suffer from a loss of identity when they graduate and must say goodbye to athletics. They grow up with their sport as their brand — everyone who knows them associates them with the sport they play.

James Bogdanovich, senior kinesiology major on the CBU men’s soccer team, says soccer is engraved in his identity and it was not until he decided to take a break from the sport his freshman year of college that he noticed how much people associated 24 | PURSUIT

him with soccer.

“Soccer was what I identified with; it was my brand growing up,” Bogdanovich says. “My freshman year (at CBU) I didn’t play and people thought of me as James, but when I started playing again, people thought of me as the soccer player.”

Although a sport consumes an athlete’s dedication, some student-athletes are able to break free from the fated identity and characterize themselves as more than just a name on a roster or a number on a jersey.

Jim Bossert, a kinesiology graduate student on the men’s swim team, says swimming plays an important role in his life, but he finds his identity in Christ.

With 20 hours of practice a week, daily trips to the athletic trainers and constant muscle soreness, life as a collegiate athlete is not very glamorous. Despite the rough patches an athlete may face, the love they have the sport is what drives them to commit their time and sacrifice their bodies for a chance to compete.

Bossert says swimming provides an outlet where he can escape the realities of life and serves as a unique way to show who he is as an athlete and servant of God. “Swimming has taught me so much about life in general and it’s always been an escape from portions of my life I’ve wanted to get away from and distract myself from,” Bossert says. “It has taught me about who I am as a person, what God has to teach us, who God is and his love and grace for us.”

With the same training schedule on constant replay, an athlete’s life takes on a rhythmic pattern, forming a devotion that becomes hard to break away from once the time to clean out his or her locker has come.

Eric Carnohan, a 2015 CBU political science graduate and men’s water polo alumni, decided graduation was not going to be a pre-determined finish line to his athletic career.

Now a professional water-polo player in Spain, Carnohan says he will know the time to stop playing competitively will be near when his body can no longer withstand the impact of the sport and, even then, it will not stop him from being a part of the water-polo community.

“That will be the most difficult part, knowing that my body cannot compete where my mind wants me to be,” Carnohan says. “My career will never completely end, as I plan to coach as a career and continue playing club for the rest of my life once I retire professionally.”

According to the National Collegiate Athletics Association, only 1 percent of collegiate athletes go on to play professional sports, making cases like Carnohan’s exceedingly rare. With this dose of reality, collegiate athletes need to accept the departure from competing is inevitable.

represent a school once they move on to the next phase of their lives, they are not stripped from their sport completely. Many athletes try to stay involved in sports through coaching or continue their career.

Chris Brown, a 2015 kinesiology graduate from CBU and men’s basketball alumnus, is working at Adrenaline, a private athletic training facility in Corona. He has the opportunity to help kids reach their fullest potential through training and gets to stay in shape himself.

“I am still very involved with (basketball)," Brown says. "I work out almost every day, play in adult leagues and I also train at my job. I get to help kids get the best (workouts) and I get to work on my cardio, strength and skills. I love it.”

Just like Brown, Kimberly Allard, kinesiology graduate from CBU and women’s soccer alumna, says her sport is still a part of her identity even though it does not play such a prominent role in her life and daily schedule as it did in college.

Jim Bossert has a moment of solitude in the aquatic center as he reflects on his time as an athlete and how the next season of his life will look.

“My identity is still surrounded by the sport of soccer and fitness,” Allard says. “I recently have been hired to work at UFC Gym as a personal trainer and I play in coed leagues.”

A sport can always be a part of an athlete’s life, whether it is coaching, participating in adult leagues or simply playing a quick pick-up game with friends.

However, once graduation comes, an athlete’s career is sidelined and he or she must figure out a new way of living without his or her schedule focusing around practice and school.

Jeff Couto, CBU diving coach, says the transition from being a student-athlete to a graduate may be daunting at first, but rather than being intimidated by the change, athletes should focus on how being an athlete has trained them to make a statement in the workplace.

“Athletics teaches (athletes) steps along the way on how to become a better employee and it builds time management because (athletes) have to balance a busy schedule of academics, athletics, extra-curricular activities, personal life, church involvement and so many other things.”

Trophies may collect dust, wins and losses may fade into the seasons played, but the athlete within will never go away.

Saying goodbye to a sport after graduation may bring confusion for athletes, but the life-lessons gained and the passion for the sport will forever be a part of athletes and will create a smoother transition into life after being a Lancer.

With only a few months remaining in my water-polo career, I am learning to no longer look at early morning wake-up calls or two-a-day workouts as a chore, but something I should cherish before time slips away. ◆

GUIDE Healthy Conflict & Communication Styles

oung adults may find conflict with family members who eat their leftovers, professors who do not acknowledge the impressiveness of an essay written while half-asleep or with a significant other who would rather not spend every date night glued to the couch.

Arguments stemming from differences in personality and lack of communication are common. Finding creative ways to communicate and handle these situations may be the key to less tension and more constructive conflict.

Sarah Wells, resident director of Simmons Hall at California Baptist University, highlights the importance of communication.

“In order to live at peace with people, you have to learn how to communicate,” Wells says. “It would be easy to brush all of your issues aside and hope they go away, but they rarely do.”

Improved communication may start with an understanding of gender differences. Dr. Cynthia Boes, associate professor of communication studies at CBU, says men and women communicate differently because of the way their brains are chemically wired.

“Men tend to communicate more instrumentally to get a task done or get Illustrations by Allison Cordova

something accomplished,” Boes says.

“Women tend to communicate more relationally to create connections with people.”

According to “Gendered Lives,” a book written by Julia Wood, author and researcher, men tend to have greater development in the left lobe of their brain, making them more focused on linear thinking.

Women, on the other hand, tend to have greater development in the brain’s right lobe, which is linked to imagination and creativity. This developmental difference plays a part in the personality and communication tendencies of an individual.

Boes says conflict can be constructive as it allows individuals to know one another better. However, many people do not understand how to communicate in a healthy way.

“If you are communicating with people as if everyone thinks the same as you, you will come out very disappointed,” Boes says. “You are going to get very frustrated because the other people aren’t doing what you expected them to do and you’re more likely to lash out at them or give up on the relationship.”

Dave Obwald, pastoral care director at The Well Community Church in Fresno, says resolving conflict starts with

one’s self.

“The lens we take on (conflict) really matters,” Obwald says. “Recognize if you have started to assign blame (to the other person). Most people in conflict want to start with the other person. The Lord wants us to work on ourselves first.”

Obwald says even if you only contributed a small part to the argument, it is important to own up to all of it.

“If you go humbly into the argument, you bring water, not gas,” Obwald says.

“Gas only adds to the fire.”

Resolving conflict goes beyond knowing your side of the argument. Wells explains how resident advisers are taught to handle conflict with CBU residents.

“We teach to approach the subject not as ‘me vs. them’ but as an ‘us vs. the issue,’ so the two parties involved in the conflict can work together to figure out the real issue,” Wells says.

Obwald says some individuals argue in a more graceful manner while others are defensive. People who are open and honest during confrontation tend to have a better chance of it ending positively. Some who hold on to bitterness tend to avoid speaking their mind.

“We are all human beings, we have a lot of similarities,” Boes says. “These obstacles we have in relationships are not insurmountable. Be willing to work with other people.” ➤ PURSUIT | 27

Competing Shark Sharks reflect a competing conflict-management style. Sharks are less concerned with relationships and are typically more goaloriented. Sharks may use aggressive behavior to resolve conflicts and assert their authority, many times being considered intimidating.

Sharks have a strong desire to win, creating a “win-lose” situation when conflict arises: a win for the shark and a loss for the other individual.

Collaborating Owl Owls have a problem confronting and collaborating conflict-management style. They greatly value goals and relationships. Owls view conflicts as problems to be solved and find solutions agreeable to all sides, creating a “win-win” situation.

Avoiding Turtle Turtles have a withdrawn conflict-management style. Turtles hide from conflict instead of stepping out of their comfort zone to resolve it. Turtles are often known as unassertive and passive. Turtles may give up their own personal wants, desires and goals, which creates a “lose-lose” situation.

Accommodating Teddy Bear Teddy bears have an accommodating conflict-management style and are very relationally inclined. Teddy bears often subdue their own goals and give into others in order to resolve conflict. The teddy bear may be unassertive and cooperative. This creates a “win-lose” situation, in which the teddy bear is the one who loses.

Compromising Fox Foxes have a compromising conflict-management style. They are goal-and-relationship oriented. Foxes are willing to sacrifice so long as the other person is willing to sacrifice, as well. They can compromise and assert themselves, which can create a “win-lose” or “loselose” situation depending on the outcome of the compromise-based conflict.

I

t is 1400 hours and on the basketball courts of California Baptist University the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is conducting an important tryout for a competitive, four-person, color guard team known as Pershing Rifles.

The camouflaged caps and laced-up boots in the lineup move together in one motion. The cadets — students in the ROTC program — are perfectly synced.

Old Glory unravels her red and white bands into the wind above them. The stocks of rifles weigh heavily into their palms.

In the center of the court, three cadre, or Army ROTC instructors, observe and take meticulous notes.

Walking around campus in uniform,

cadets say they experience the occasional ogling passerby or the common “thank you for your service.” Although most cadets are yet to be considered active-duty, they are following in the shadows of their cadre who have been deployed collectively to more than eight different countries, including areas of the Middle East.

“A lot of the time people don’t realize that we are actually active-duty military,” says Sgt. 1st Class Jason R. Winkle, ROTC military science instructor at CBU. Cadre are assigned to specific ROTC companies throughout the country as teachers, mentors and advisers for the cadets. They are given the responsibility of overseeing the organization of that particular company, instructing military science courses and leading cadets in daily soldier training. ➤

Capt. William R. Brookshire, assistant professor of military science and recruiting operations officer, says the difference with ROTC students is an addictive sense of community that comes with service and sacrifice.

“I love the Army life,” Brookshire says.

“It ‘bit me’ to the point that I couldn’t walk away.”

The Pershing Rifles tryouts have finished. It is now 1520 hours. Brookshire is moving toward the team of cadets as they respectfully roll up the American flag and wait for the results of the tryouts. His countenance wrinkles with a grin and he raises both hands to high-five two cadets.

The bustling group of cadets begin discussing romantic relationships and funny YouTube videos. Winkle has now joined in with his own bantering. The chatter seems disjointed — “Yes, Sergeant” and “No, Sergeant” bouncing between chuckles and chitchat.

“Camaraderie, the care from superiors, then moving into positions of leadership, we are a family and we take care of each other,” Brookshire says.

This is a military program. Underlying the “family feel” is discipline. There is a balance to be found amid the joking and the structure. Discipline is love; love is discipline. Ultimately, Brookshire says it is a soldier’s conduct that affects the entire

unit in which he or she is placed. Morale goes a long way and Winkle says a leader’s personality can influence that morale and deeply affect the bond between soldiers who may someday face combat together.

“We’re going to give them some hard love; we’re going to give them some personal coaching. Sometimes there’s going to be teamwork, sometimes team building, but at the end of the day, when they’re reporting to their units and they’re in front of other soldiers, they are going to be in charge of America’s sons and daughters and they’re going to be in charge of getting them home safely,” Winkle says.

Cadet Jacob Treadway, senior psychology major, says he has learned different, but equally important, leadership qualities while under the mentorship of his cadre. From Winkle, he has learned about

RELATIONSHIPS caring for the interest of other individuals, and from Brookshire, he has been challenged in his personal growth.

“They inspire us to get the job done right and efficiently,” Treadway says. “They have high expectations. It is very challenging but is also very rewarding.”

Cadet Bryanna Mora, sophomore communication studies major, says the idea of leadership is something that flows down the ranks and into the hearts of the cadets.

Because of the inspiration of her cadre and cadets before her, she has seen more potential in herself as a future leader.

“I walked in without any leadership skills,” Mora says. “Now I am a lot more confident in myself to be an army officer because of the discipline, leadership skills and the influence of other leaders.”

Pending graduation, contracted cadets are commissioned with full-time employment as a reserve or active duty officer, overseeing fellow servicemen and women. Regardless of the specific responsibility given to each cadet, they are indeed being trained through the unique experiences of their cadre.

Mora attributes the cadre’s role-model qualities to the fact that they have both already done so much for the Army. She says she hopes someday to be as successful as she knows they already are.

Winkle says the current generation of cadets is training to be leaders under the experience of many recently seasoned military personnel.

“They get to hear it and experience it through our eyes,” Winkle says.

The cadre will soon move on from the program because Army assignments change every three years, and Brookshire and Winkle will not see many of their cadets through to graduation. The cadre say they are proud of the work the CBU cadets have demonstrated and enjoy the process of seeing them reach self-actualization and moving up in rank.

“I know when they finish here, and when they go on to start their service, I would be happy to serve with any one of them again down the road,” Brookshire says.

Throughout years of service, these men and women will serve with many others.

Those connections create an interwoven relationship spanning the nation and the world, the active duty service member and the reserve, the cadet and the cadre.

“You have people to reach back to,” Brookshire says.

ROTC Success Story for CBU's Program

N

ow ranked as a second lieutenant, Kevin Valenzuela graduated from CBU in December 2015 with a bachelor of arts in psychology. He completed the ROTC program with an impressive resume of awards and titles, including commander of the battalion covering CBU, University of California– Riverside, California State University– San Bernardino and Claremont McKenna College.

Also on his list of achievements is husband and father.

Sgt. 1st Class Jason R. Winkle, ROTC military science instructor at CBU, says because of the mature way Valenzuela balanced school, ROTC and family life, he is truly a “success story” for the program.

“He is going to go on and do great things for the Army, not to mention he is going to be a great father, a great husband, and still maintain putting bread on the table,” Winkle says.

Valenzuela says he knew the sacrifice he and his wife, Natalie, would have to make

to finish strong and keep their family even stronger. He wanted his story to be inspiring and influential for both of his young boys — Kevin Jr. (KJ), 3, and Nikoli (Niko), 1.

“What are your goals?” Valenzuela says. “You have to show it. You have to work hard. You have to make sacrifices.”

Most importantly to Valenzuela is the strength he found through faith in God and relying upon the promises in the Bible.

Valenzuela is currently in Missouri for more training and will move to Fort Drum, N.Y. as he is commissioned there as an active-duty combat engineer.

“Good kids that are well-rounded and want to serve their country — I want to see the future continue with that,” Brookshire says. “We have some really awesome kids.”

determination, excellence, professionalism and maturity placed on these leaders-intraining who are relatively young.

It is 0700 hours a week later and ROTC is assembled under the trees of the Billie and Eugene Yeager Center. In four rows, the cadets stand at attention, listening as Winkle walks among them discussing their successes and failures of the 6-mile ruck march they have just finished. Brookshire stands to the

side observing, wearing a bright yellow “Cadre” crew-neck sweatshirt. Winkle wraps up his remaining comments. The cadre then turn on their heels and walk away in opposite directions, leaving the formation only under the authority of Treadway and one other senior contracted cadet. Winkle looks over his shoulder one last time and nods to himself before disappearing behind the building. ◆

The petite shop is in between a print shop and newspaper office and serves fresh, made-toorder ice cream with unexpected toppings. The ice cream base is 100 percent organic and all supplied from local businesses.

Selections such as Orange Honey, Strawberry Balsamic, Espresso Bean and Chocolate Lavender are a few of À La Minute’s menu staples, while seasonal and daily specials are also offered. The menu is family-friendly including vanilla and chocolate flavors for kids and adults who may like to stick to the basics.

Quality, innovation and time are required in order to craft these liquid nitrogen desserts. The ice cream is smooth, creamy and perfectly shaped into a scoop of greatness.

Slickables, Riverside Slickables, located in downtown Riverside, attracts college students with late-night cravings. Step into this small, yet cozy, venue and smell fresh baked cookies as Slickables is best known for its ice cream sandwiches or, as they call them, “sandwiches you can lick.”

Far from your average ice cream sandwich, Slickables serves two signature cookies with customized ice cream holding the sandwich together. I recommend strawberry swirl with two sugar cookies. The strawberry flavors complement the different-flavored sprinkles on top of the cookie. Slickables is much smaller than most ice cream parlors, but this does not discredit its quality. One scoop of ice cream or an ice cream sandwich ranges from $1.50-$2.16.

Afters, Chino Hills The “milky bun," a plain glazed doughnut, is what sets Afters apart from other ice cream parlors. Here, customers have the option of choosing one of the 16 different ice cream flavors. After picking a flavor of ice cream, it is then placed inside the bun, covered with custom toppings, and then sealed.

Afters plays with hot and cold dessert components, mixing the warm doughnut and cold ice cream to make a unique dessert experience.

Every Afters menu item is locally sourced and made in-house to preserve its quality.

Co-owner Andy Nguyen’s love for fashion is evident in the store’s design and setup, which is similar to a boutique and appeals to the hipster community.

With more than 100,000 followers on Instagram and five different locations serving thousands of people each day, Afters has created a new culture when it comes to ice cream.

Prices range from $3.50-$5.

T

raversing anywhere between Northern and Southern California typically means a road trip straight through the Central Valley on Interstate 5, which has been coined by the New York Times as “the epitome of all the highways that turn driving to drudgery.” Personified by miles upon miles of flat farmland, wild tumbleweeds and the occasional cow, I-5 is truly where all dreams go to die.

Many students at California Baptist University make the trek two or three times a semester. Two such students, seniors in CBU's Journalism & New Media and Public Relation program, decided there had to be more to the infamously boring I-5, and therefore dedicated a day to exploring the 268-mile stretch of interstate between the Bay Area and the Grapevine with the hopes of making the journey a little bit more enjoyable for many. Here is what they found.

Pea Soup Andersen’s – Santa Nella Village After leaving the Bay Area and traveling south on I-5 for about one hour, you will find Pea Soup Andersen’s nestled in the rustic looking shops of Santa Nella.

It primarily serves travelers the dish for which it is most well-known — you guessed it — pea soup. First established in 1924 in Buellton, Calif. its sister restaurant in Santa Nella can be spotted from I-5 by its iconic windmill, and it boasts a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. The all-you-caneat pea soup “Traveler’s Special” is perhaps the reason the restaurant can go through up to 600 gallons on a busy day during peak season, which lasts from November to January and May to August.

“People stop from anywhere for the pea soup,” said Chef Salvador Garcia, 46, of Los Banos. “We don’t make any other soup.”

While waiting for your food, you can take a look through the marketplace gift shop for ornaments, magnets and other trinkets to take back home to friends and family. Other menu highlights: chocolate éclair, fried chicken.

Mercey Springs Produce Fruit Stand – Los Banos Just a few miles down I-5 from Pea Soup Andersen’s is a small sign leading to Mercey Springs Produce Fruit Stand, a family-owned business that sells everything from figs and apricots to almonds and walnuts. Even though the most popular produce sold is cherries in the busy summer season, the fruit stand also offers items ➤ PURSUIT | 39

such as chilli-lemon pistachios for the more adventurous of taste buds.

“We get tourists coming here to see what we grow in California,” said Samuel Torres, 20, of Los Banos.

His father started the store 15 years ago and now Torres and his wife, Ixselle, run the business. Much of the produce, including grapes, pomegranates, mandarins, lemons, oranges and watermelon, are grown on the Torres’ 10-acre farm, while some of the more seasonal foods such as mangoes are imported. For whom it may concern, the produce is also organic.

Bonsai – Coalinga Harris Ranch is not just known for the unfortunate smells of bovine from the nearby cow farms of Coalinga; it is also known for stellar shopping, including a small stand off the side of the road called Bonsai. Hyu Kim, 57, Coalinga native and owner of the stand, has grown and sold the trees for almost 15 years after learning how to make them from his father.

Kim sells more than 50 different types of trees at his stand with a price range of $20 to $350, depending on the size and type. The most popular type of tree sold is the traditional juniper bonsai tree.

Kim says some of the trees he sells are 30 years old. The largest trees at the stand are up to two feet tall.

“They can even grow to 50 or 60 years,” he said. “But you have to take care of them very carefully. If not, they will die.”

Bonsai hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday through Saturday.

Kern County Raceway Park – Bakersfield About 17 miles before the northern side of the Grapevine is Kern County Raceway

Park, affectionately known as Bakersfield’s version of NASCAR. Conveniently placed within the park is a motocross dirt track, built up and shaped by Rick Hollenbeck, 49, of Bakersfield, who has been riding motocross nearly his entire life. The track is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and only closes in the event of bad weather or broken equipment.

Anyone can practice on the track for $25 a day, and the riders are sent out on the track at staggered times so no one is turned away. All levels are encouraged, from peewee to pro.

“We probably have five of the top miniriders (12 and under) in the nation that are living here in Bakersfield,” Hollenbeck said.

All five riders practice at the track, including 10-year-old motocross prodigy Ryder DeFrancesco.

KCRP will be holding the 2016 Loretta Lynn Motocross Qualifier from March 1213 and while Hollenbeck’s attempts in the past five months to revamp the racetrack have been successful, he believes the qualifier will only further “set this place on fire.”

Outlets at Tejon Ranch – Arvin The last stop before going over the Grapevine is littered with traveling favorites such as In-n-Out, Starbucks, Panda Express and a variety of gas stations for people who like to be on the safe side and fill their gas tank before heading up the mountains.

However, with the grand opening of the Outlets at Tejon Ranch in 2014, travelers can also now stop and shop ‘til they drop.

“Since we’re so close to the freeway, everyone stops when they’re coming or going, so that’s when it gets really busy,” said American Eagle Outfitters jean expert, ➤

Hyu Kim diligently waters and cleans each of the Bonsai trees in his roadside stand along Interstate Highway 5. Kim’s father taught him the art of caring for these miniature trees and he is now sharing that experience with travelers along the highway.

Stores like Charlotte Russe, Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store and Fossil appeal to a variety of clientele. While some people come from far away to shop at the stores, some people are on vacation or traveling up and down the I-5 for school.

The outlets are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday through Saturday.

Old Ridge Route Antiques – Lebec Just a few minutes after entering the Grapevine is the exit for the small town of Lebec, which will take you down the road to Old Ridge Route Antiques. Once a grocery store, it was converted into an antique store 20 years ago and is now owned and operated by Paula Clevenger, 67, of Cuddy Valley. A friend and partner of the original owner, she sells antiques from 15 different dealers all over the state of California.

Although peak season is January through May, she says the store has better sales going on during the holidays. All kinds

of people come in to shop, including movie stars and film crews or production designers coming in looking for items for movie sets.

“It’s a fun business,” Clevenger said.

“I like the people, I like the find, I like the research, I like the selling. I like all parts of it.”

Old Ridge Route Antiques is open every day of the week except for Tuesdays and major holidays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and sells antique items from books and clothes to car parts and furniture.

Near the end of the Grapevine, I-5 splits off into Route 210, 14 and other highways taking travelers various places throughout Southern California, and so ends the journey.

Next time you find yourself driving on I-5 on your way to visit friends and family or traveling back to another semester at CBU, remember a few places along the way that will perhaps change your mind about “the epitome” of driving drudgery, otherwise known as I-5. ◆ PURSUIT | 43

Head Full of Dreams” is the sevent h stud io a lbum from Coldplay and t hough it is rumored to be their last, it is perhaps their most saccharine work to date.

This album is full of similarly colorful beats and high production.

The technicolor ambition of “A Head Full of Dreams” stands in stark contrast to the melancholic g rays and blues of 2014’s “Ghost Stories," written in the wake of lead singer Chris Martin’s breakup with his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow.

I n “A Head Fu l l of Dreams” Coldplay has swung the emotional pendulum toward relentless optimism.

However, in the pursuit of capturing a euphor ic and upl ift ing feel ing, Coldplay may have oversold their ability to raise humanity’s spirits.

The album is unabashedly pop in its majority with lyrical and sonic

ot To Disappear,” the latest studio album from Daughter, i s a h au nt i ngly i nt i m ate col lect ion of alternat ive rock/pop tracks that are simultaneously cold and contemplative.

Smooth guitar-work, poetic lyrics and the occasional synthesizer give “Not to Disappear” an icy feel.

Lead singer, Elena Tonra, expounds upon the introspective poeticism of previous ef forts in a notably-honest approach to songwriting on this album.

Lead single, “Doing the R ight T h i n g ,” i s a he a r t- w r e n c h i n g examination of A lzheimer’s and its impact on family life.

Throughout the album, Daughter repeatedly discusses deeply relatable fears and common struggles of the

ambit ions. However, ba l lads such as “Everglow” and “A mazing Day” hearken back to Coldplay’s origins.

The standout on this album is its closing track with a title as uplifting as its message: “Up&Up.” Ful l of bombastic lyrics, choral backing vocals and a riveting guitar solo featuring Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, this track is a f itting conclusion to the album.

If “A Head Full of Dreams” is indeed the f inal Coldplay album, this is the perfect song to encapsulate their career.

Cage the Elephant ‘Tell Me I’m Pretty’ Dan Auerbach

el l Me I’m P ret t y,” bei ng their fourth full-length studio album, Kentucky alternative rockers Cage the Elephant wear their inf luences on their sleeve as they utilize well-worn instrumentation to create perhaps their best-produced album yet.

The a lbum, produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, is a slick blend of Auerbach’s blues and garage-rock revivalism and Cage the Elephant’s sig nature r ugged, neopsychedelic sound.

It is diff icult to distinguish where Auerbach’s creative inf luence ends and the voice of Cage the Elephant truly begins in this album. “Tell Me I’m Pretty” may be the band's most commercia l a lbum yet, producing several catchy radio-friendly tunes such as the lead track, “Cry Baby.”

Instrumentally, Cage the Elephant has really come into their own on this

album. From the fuzz-fueled pedal work of g uitar ist Brad Shultz on “Too Late To Say Goodbye” to the tight drumming of Jared Champion on “Sweetie Little Jean,” the band’s instrumentation is at a peak.

The standout on the album is the work of voca list Matt Shultz.

On this album Shultz leaves behind his traditional wailing vocals in an excha nge for ef fect ive rest ra i nt.

Regardless, this album perfects a sound that has become both familiar and reliable in alternative radio and the discography of Cage the Elephant.

Essentially, “Tell Me I’m Pretty” is a polished commercial from what has previously been a rugged act. With Auerbach’s careful guidance, Cage the Elephant sanded away many of their rough edges, but perhaps at the cost of what made them so unique in the f irst place. ◆

De-stressing with Adult Coloring Books Written by Natilee Ruiz

M

ore than just calming outlets and creative stimulations, adult coloring books have become the ultimate hobby for young adults and college students, and the trendiest form of rest and relaxation therapy.

As one of the most popular 2015 Christmas gifts, adult coloring books reach into the hearts of the youthful and bring serenity to the frequently hectic lives led by college students and working adults. A growing number of people are trying these books and using the calming activity as a way to intentionally relax.

Marilyn Moore, associate professor of sociology at California Baptist University, says coloring is one of the easiest ways to relax. “(Coloring books) are very useful for therapeutic purposes,” Moore says.

Loving the consistently growing trend, Moore attests to the personal benefits of coming home to the hobby after a long day of work.

For some, the simple act of filling in white spaces with a colored pencil or marker provides the perfect outlet for stress, anxiety or even anger. Moore, who offers her time working with at-risk youth, says that in high-stress situations 46 | PURSUIT

where youth may be coming in because of to substance abuse, one of the first tools she gives them is coloring pages.

“I’m going to introduce coloring to them as a de-stresser because a lot of the girls come in and they’re already trying to detox from drugs,” Moore says.

In her past, Moore has experienced first-hand the effects of substance abuse and the benefits that come from positive rehabilitation.

With a strong testimony and emotional battle with drug addiction, Moore is passionate about her work with at-risk youth. She says introducing c a l m i ng, peacef u l met hod s of rehabilitation, such as coloring books, creates a safe environments for those who are struggling.

She says her journey through several struggles and addictions is God’s healing so that she may relate to those who are struggling with similar situations.

“I was a cutter. I had eating disorders. I was a substance-abuser. I was agoraphobic for a while. I have a lot of stuff from my past that is useful in talking with at-risk youth,” she says.

Historically, coloring has not only been used in classrooms as a learning tool or pastime for children, it has also been implemented into therapy and counseling

for both adults and children.

Moore says utilizing coloring in rehabilitation and support groups helps start the conversation, while providing a relaxing and warm social environment.

"Sometimes, when you’re sitting around in a circle, they don’t want to talk," Moore says. "But if they’re sitting around at a table and they’re all coloring and I mention something, somebody will talk about it and all of a sudden you have this cross-talk that’s going every which way and you get into things you never would have gotten into if you looked them in the face and said, ‘Can we talk about (some topic)?’"

The tranquility created within a room of people coloring is what Moore says is the best way to delve into the heart of issues that may oftentimes take a long time to open up about.

College can cause students an overwhelming amount of stress and is a key factor in the high demand and purchasing of coloring books for adults.

Rose Huckabee, junior psychology major, says coloring is one of the ways she finds an outlet for her anxiety and the common stress she experiences at school.

ARTS enjoys coloring as a practical way to settle down from her busy life. “(My grandmother) knew I liked coloring a lot, but she also knew I get stressed out really easily and made it for me for when I’m at school. (Now) I can get away and color,” Huckabee says.

Whether coloring alone or alongside her boyfriend Dominic Nelson, junior constr uct ion management major, Huckabee schedules in time to pursue relaxation.

“It helps take your mind off of everything that’s going on around (you) and causes you to focus in on what’s between the lines and not what’s going on in your head,” Nelson says.

Whether using coloring books for a fun and quiet pastime, or using them to peacefully stimulate positive rehabilitative functions, this once childlike activity has proven to possess irrefutable benefits. ◆

Ingredients of an

A

lthough artists come in all different forms, an artistic lifestyle is made from the same core ingredients: talent, passion, a love for their craft, and most importantly, hard work and dedication.

Emily Draughon, senior viola performance major at California Baptist University, is an artist to her core. Her passion for art, whether it be sketching, sewing or music, has always been a part of her life. She says she has always gone into craft stores and picked out random pieces and tried to make something.

The first time she tried cake decorating was through a class at Jo-Anne Fabric and Craft Store, but she says the cake they were decorating was not very interesting.

“I just started doing my own thing. I made a poker table and took green fondant and draped it over the cake like the felt on real tables. Then I made a deck of cards— a royal flush—and poker pieces,” Draughon says. “The instructor was a little surprised, but was like, ‘Oh, that’s nice.’”

After the class, Draughon says she decided not to go back to a class setting but rather learn through practice, working on cakes at home. She says she learned by making mistakes and fixing those mistakes.

In 2013, Draughon made her own wedding cake. She says she remembers assembling the cake in her wedding dress and someone coming behind her to put an apron on her because she told them there was no time to put an apron on.

“People said that I was crazy for making my own wedding cake, but it actually was not a problem,” she says.

After making that cake, people noticed her craftsmanship. She says they started asking her to make their own specialoccasion cakes, including Aly Lagana, CBU alumnus, who got married in June 2012.

“My husband was the one who found out she made cakes because they were in University Choir and Orchestra together,” Lagana says. “The cake she made us was a two-tier, chocolate cake with raspberry filling, all white outside with sea shells. It was beautiful, I loved it.”

Lagana says since then she has become close friends with Draughon she sees how great of a work ethic she has.

“She works hard at what she does.

Whether it’s making cakes, practicing viola or doing homework, she is a diligent worker and always has amazing results,” Lagana says.

them cakes), so I just kind of keep doing it,” Draughon says.

Making cakes has taken its toll on Draughon. She says she enjoys the finished product but decorating is extremely stressful and straining on her body.

“I would be standing in the kitchen from the morning until really late at night working on cakes,” Draughon says. “(I am) hunched over at the counter and once (I am) done, I just lay on the floor and I feel super-tense and have to release. I have cried so many times making cakes — things go wrong, and I’ve dropped a cake before.

Physically and emotionally, it’s really tough.”

Draughon says while she enjoys cakedecorating as a hobby she would never want to do it as a career.

“I actually don’t even like cake," Draughon says. “I don’t think it tastes good.”

Though Draughon’s artistry extends further than just cake-decorating, her enjoyment for it is evident while her hands kneed the fondant to the correct consistency and width, placing it carefully over the cake and making sure each edge and air bubble is smoothed down.

With her talent coming in many varying forms, Draughon has all of the perfect ingredients — kind of like a cake. ➤ Emily Draughon, senior viola performance major, places each fondant flower precisely onto the bubblegum pink cake that the Pursuit staff created with her help. ursuit decided to take a cakedecorating class from Emily Draughon, senior viola performance major at California Baptist University, to test their artistic ability outside of the newsroom. From the very beginning, Draughon had to fix the Funfetti, cakebaking mishap.

Once the actual cake was saved by Draughon, she taught the staff members how to keep the cake from falling apart by spreading frosting on in a thin layer to hold it together.

“Who wants to try?” was constantly being asked with the response of shy staring at each other and waiting for someone else to volunteer, afraid to try for fear of messing it all up. Finally, resorting to rock-paperscissors, the winner (or loser depending on how you look at it) was chosen to drape the quickly sagging fondant over the small 6-inch cake.

The fondant was smoothed over the iced layers of cake with the redeeming factor of just placing fondant flowers over the dents and bubbles like Band-Aids.

Two hours later, with green and pink covered palms and crumbs of cake pieces on the corners of their mouths, the Pursuit staff had a finished product of a delicious, not-terrible-looking cake resembling something from a Dr. Seuss book. ◆

To "level and torte" a cake is to provide a flat surface ideal for stacking, icing and covering in fondant decorations.
