The Story From its earliest days in the 1920s, the American Songbook has had a love affair with New York City. And like any love affair, the feelings and sentiment have run the gamut of bliss to blistering.

The music’s universal themes struck a chord with people everywhere, reminding them—convincing them?— that despite all the headaches and hassles, there was no better place to live, visit, or be in love than in New York. After all, isn’t a love affair about loving despite all the flaws you recognize?

The Songbook not only narrated city life but was versatile enough to speak to everyone, no matter where they lived or who they loved. The music fit in at jazz clubs in Harlem, on Broadway stages, in midtown dance and nightclubs and even elegant supper clubs uptown.

Join us as we celebrate this timeless music that speaks to the magic of New York and reminds us that, despite all the headaches and hassles of life in the city, it’s a magical place to be.
