LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR This year marked the centennial of Nat King Cole (who we were able to honor with our tour by the great Freddy Cole in May), so it seems appropriate to start this welcome with his well-known quote, “I may be helping to bring harmony between people through my music.” What Nat said almost 75 years ago might as well be a tag line for JAZZ AT THE BALLROOM. As you will discover in the following pages, we have done nothing if not bring people together through music in 2019. This past year was meaningful in that we increased our number of shows considerably

and were able to share our special style of classic jazz concerts from the San Diego area up through Napa Valley. Mixed throughout them were shows at hospitals, senior living communities, and schools, workshops, and master classes. The year ended with our artists spending Christmas performing at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and Mills Peninsula Hospital. I look forward to sharing with you the successes, lessons learned, and plans for growing and bringing America’s greatest art form to more people.

Suzanne Roche,

Executive Director

LETTER FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR 2019 was the biggest year to date for JATB. I finally got the sense that with frameworks in place for our community work and concerts, we were able to achieve the impact we want. Focus is the word I’d use. With focused attention on targeted community groups, you make a deeper impact, as opposed to giving “one-off” concerts (those are still great, but students, elderly residents, and hospital patients seem to relish the repeat performance). It allows them to build a rapport with the repeat musicians. This is what sets JATB apart. Performances are intimate and performers are accessible.

Finally, our Scholarship Program continues to find some ridiculous Bay Area talent! Amazingly, the average age went down this year and again we had applications from 12 schools from across the Bay Area. Students who don’t win the “grand prize” end up getting hired to play before concerts. We have built an exciting relationship with This is real life experience and absolutely ATRIA in Foster City. The residents and invaluable. We guide these young budding staff have enjoyed close to a concert per talents through the process of working as month. Our newest hospital affiliation is professional musicians. Obviously, their incredible – bringing jazz to Lucille Packard faces all glow when they get paid some Children’s Hospital. This partnership was pocket change for performing, thanks to started late into 2019 but will flourish the strong fundraising effort in 2019. The into 2020. Be it the surprised look on a model for the fundraiser was small, quaint, doctor’s face as they walk through the hall classy, and managed to raise $60,000. The to their next surgery, or a young patient impact of this money is immense because who gets wheeled out of their hospital of the focused nature of its distribution to room, the notion of art, color, music schools and patient-care facilities. 2019 filling the hallways brings people out to also saw numerous shows outside the glance, smile, enjoy a coffee, and escape Ballroom, which brought new subscribers whatever toils their situation is bringing to JATB and attracted new and eager faces them. I don’t have the appropriate words to the coveted Ballroom series. to explain or describe what I see there and how amazing it is to feel the impact of the music in this setting. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Naturally, when we dreamed up the idea of a scholarship program back in 2018, we had an existential moment where we asked ourselves “If we offer it, will they apply?” We didn’t know how many schools and students were familiar with our organization, and there’s nothing worse than an award program with no applicants. Fortunately, the first year of the program was everything we had hoped and more. With applicants from over fifteen schools throughout the Bay Area, we received an incredible variety of musicians sharing their take on jazz standards. It was hard to choose between many of the students and that is a wonderful problem to have (and not one we expected). The three winners received $1500 each to use for their music education, and the music departments at their respective schools also were awarded $1000. As part of the scholarship prize, the three winners came in April to perform with professional jazz musicians. Sound check was an impromptu master class and once the concert began, the students were supported by a room full of family, friends, and teachers. Our annual gala fundraiser funds this program. For the coming 2019-2020 season, we hosted a thank you dinner and concert at the French Club in October for everyone who contributed to the Scholarship Program. We raised close to $50,000 thanks to our generous donors, Carole Middleton, Billy Harris, Nick Casagrande, and the John Pizzarelli Trio. 5
