Creating and Delivering More Immersive Programming In recent years, JA has clarified what we stand for and refined our programs to become an even more effective partner to educators and businesses alike. We have elevated our focus on outcomes for high school students and created many new and immersive entrepreneurial, career readiness, and financial literacy programs. We have met with business and education leaders to listen to their needs and adapt our programming approach. Explore all of JA’s programs
A YEAR OF IMPACT JA offers programs that help students explore career possibilities and build skills that better prepare them to enter the workforce. We provide exposure to diverse career paths through job shadow days and career panels with speakers from local employers. Our career preparation programs include resume workshops, mock interviews,

CHEREECE BURRELL JA ALUMNA Chereece Burrell, a JA alumna, is a determined and accomplished young woman. She immigrated from Jamaica to the United States at the age of four and ultimately, she attended the Global Communications Academy in Hartford.
CAREER CONNECTIONS FOR YOUNG WOMEN (CCYW) Our Career Connections for Young Women program continued in a hybrid format with sessions being a mixture of in person at the JA office, offsite, and virtual. A strong cohort joined us for this life-changing 10-week program that encourages and inspires young women in grades 10-12 to explore and prepare for career options, and to focus on building toward financial literacy. Students participated in a variety of after-school workshops, activities and lessons, including industry-specific panel discussions, soft skill training, and career exploration.

Chereece’s JA journey began with Career Connections for Young Women and continued with the Entrepreneurial Academy. She earned a JA scholarship to help fund college, explored her passions and dreams, and graduated early from the University of Connecticut with degrees in psychology and human development. Chereece credits JA for essential skills like resumebuilding and interviewing, which have propelled her success as a Reaching Back Coach at Hartford Promise and a Behavioral Therapist with TheraCare. Her story exemplifies JA’s profound impact on young people striving for success.

Last year, we provided Resume Workshops for nearly 350 students, held over 10 Mock Interviews with almost 450 students, and held over 50 Career Days with a total of 2,500 students featuring 42 different companies and organizations. This helped thousands of students build the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their chosen careers.

Strengthening Financial Literacy
Connecticut recently passed a Financial Literacy Mandate, requiring all high school students to complete a financial literacy course before graduating. JA offers a wide array of programs starting as early as Kindergarten with JA Days in elementary schools and running through high school and wants to work with our schools to meet this mandate, helping students develop the skills and knowledge they need to make informed financial decisions. Highlights from this past year include several programs that would help students meet the new mandate, including: • JA ran two semester-long courses focused on JA Economics that provided a combined total of more than 5,000 instructional contact hours. The 72 students that participated, each received 70 hours of JA engagement. • JA partnered with North Central Connecticut Habitat for Humanity to run three financial literacy focused workshops during their Youth Advocacy Conferences. Students learned how to create a household budget while staying within their means. • JA ran a family workshop in February for GEARUP in Meriden. Over 20 high school students and their families participated in establishing S.M.A.R.T. goals and learned how to successfully reach those goals.
COLENE CENIGLIO AN INSPIRING EDUCATOR & JA PARTNER For the past 7 years, Colene Ceniglio, Secondary Career Counselor at Enfield High School, has championed impactful JA programming at her school. From the beginning, Colene and her colleagues have regularly requested new programming and “JA would make it happen.” The relationship has grown over the years, with JA becoming the school’s primary financial literacy and work-readiness partner, and “has made programs we otherwise couldn’t do a reality.” Among the creative programs have been job shadows and career walks with diverse local businesses, a career speaker series with representatives from over 70 businesses, a special program that engages the school’s hundreds of 10th graders on financial literacy, resume writing and interviewing, and a trade and tech school day.
The JA Economics course teaches high school students economic principles and skills for real-world applications and future financial success. Through a variety of experiential activities and tangible case studies presented by the teacher and volunteers, students learn to apply economic reasoning and build the skills necessary for future financial literacy success. The course addresses all economics standards identified by the Council for Economic Education for a high school economics course and can fulfill a school’s need for Economics education.

JA’s Entrepreneurial Academies and the JA Company Program give students the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship from experienced business leaders, gain

real-world experience conceptualizing and running a business, and develop important skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and communication. The Academies are run after school at corporate locations in Greater Hartford (hosted by The Hartford, Pratt & Whitney, and Stanley Black & Decker), students are brought together from a number of schools throughout the region after applying and committing to attend each week for 15 weeks. In addition to the Academies, the JA Company Program allows teachers to bring this experience to their entire class during

the school day. In 2022-23, JA ran the JA Company program with 5 different schools and organizations serving 132 students with nearly 3,400 hours of JA instructional contact time.

JA STEPS TO SUCCESS JA continued to run our JA Steps to Success programming

delivered virtually straight to students in the comfort of their own homes. We held two sessions, each spanning six weeks, with 25 students participating. The first session used the JA Be Entrepreneurial curriculum and focused on the stages of business plan development from ideation through the day-to-day operations. The second session used the JA Take Stock in Your Future curriculum and provided students with a deep dive into the world of investments and how the stock market impacts various aspects of their lives. JA of Southwest New England was the first and remains the only JA area running after school programs like this that parents can directly enroll their students in.

POISED FOR AN AMAZING CAREER Dev Goel, a Farmington High School Junior, embraces the power of JA at the highest levels. In 2023 alone, he was the featured speaker at our Business Hall of Fame and Master of Ceremonies at our Partners in Achievement Breakfast – speaking confidently to 1,000 business leaders combined. He also participated in the Entrepreneurial Academy at Stanley Black & Decker, and had an amazing Summer experience as an Empower Intern at KPMG. His JA participation started in 1st grade, continued every year since, and he’s even started to volunteer, teaching JA to younger students. Dev’s commitment to JA is no accident, it’s a family affair his sister Sia participated in JA throughout her K – 12 schooling and his father, Praveen Goel, has vounteered and taught JA for more than 15 years. Through his JA experiences, Dev has learned a great deal – from keys to financial literacy and entrepreneurship to the importance of networking and professional etiquette. Dev is already enjoying great success and his future couldn’t be brighter.

What’s Next JA INNOVATION CHALLENGES In 2023-24, we will debut an exciting new statewide competition where students learn rapid business planning and pitch their ideas to a panel of judges like on TV’s Shark Tank in regional events throughout the state. For the first time, JA will have a final culminating challenge among the first place teams from each regional competition at the University of Hartford.
JA STOCK MARKET CHALLENGE In 2024, JA will host our first Stock Market Challenge! Students and teachers will learn about the stock market and compete by utilizing simulated funds to invest and trade.

This new event includes a daytime competition for students that complete the curriculum as well as an evening event pitting teams of adults against each other. Through this engaging competition, participants fine-tune their stock selection skills, cultivate financial acumen, and learn about the risks and rewards of investing.
THE FIRST JA TO OFFER FREE COLLEGE CREDIT JA offers 10 ready-to-teach, semester-long course curricula, like JA Economics outlined on page 7, that align with Common Core and other standards, as well as support the new financial literacy graduation requirement. In an exciting new development, JA is preparing to work with local universities and colleges to offer free college credits for completion of these JA courses.

POWERFUL SEEDS GREW INTO A THRIVING CAREER & JA CHAMPION When Gregg Burton was a sixth grader in Kansas City, like nearly everyone his age, he had little idea of what went into running a business. Like thousands of other students in that area, though, he had the good fortune to participate in the Exchange City program, a predecessor to the current JA BizTown program. It was a life-changing experience that clearly left a mark.

Through JA, I learned how to communicate in efficient ways, delegate, problem solve, create ideas, and collaborate. I learned lifelong skills that I can transfer over into my college and future career, while also learning a lot more about myself and the type of female leader I want to be in the word. JA BIZTOWN AND FINANCE PARK JA has conducted a feasibility study with community leaders to explore building a JA BizTown/Finance Park facility in Hartford. This life-changing program exists in more than 20 other states and involves students completing 12 weeks of financial literacy lessons before spending 5 hours at our JA facility for their capstone experience in career exploration, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.

After great success through high school, college and law school, Gregg has built a thriving practice as a real estate lawyer at one of Connecticut’s leading law firms, Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey. He has also become a committed JA volunteer, board member, and is leveraging his real estate expertise to advise JA as it approaches the possibility of building its own BizTown. Who would have guessed that a sixth grader’s experience would inspire a thriving career and lay the groundwork for building a facility similar to the one he visited that will go on to serve thousands of students each year in Connecticut?

JA Scholarships The Karl Flemke Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of a former JA USA President, Karl Flemke, and is awarded to a senior who participated in varsity athletics as well as JA programming, while demonstrating exceptional leadership, teamwork, and academic achievement.

The Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, Inc. Scholarship, is awarded to a senior who actively participated in JA programs while demonstrating exceptional leadership, teamwork, and academic achievement. The Elaine Dwyer Scholarship, named in honor of long time JA Chief Administrative Officer Elaine Dwyer. Elaine dedicated 40 years to JA and was, herself, a participant in the JA Company Program as a high school student. This scholarship is awarded to a senior who participated in the JA Company Program and demonstrated exceptional leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurial spirit.
AALEYAH MCCULLOCH John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury Received the JA of Southwest New England Scholarship “Aaleyah [McCulloch] is respected by her peers and admired by the entire Kennedy High faculty… she has always displayed a high degree of responsibility, honesty, and integrity”, says John F. Kennedy High School Mathematics Department Chair Danielle Byron. In addition to being a standout participant in the JA Career Connections for Young Women program, Aaleyah finished third in her class on top of participating in more clubs than can be counted on one hand and completing a mind-blowing 163 hours of community service during her high school career. In the fall, Aaleyah will be attending Sacred Heart University to get her medical degree.

ETHAN DEROSA Oxford High School Received the Karl Flemke Memorial Scholarship “It would be an understatement to say Ethan (DeRosa) epitomizes responsibility, kindness, and academic ability and drive…He is a model for both his peers and younger students”, says Susan Blozzon, Oxford HS AP Chemistry Teacher. Youth Conservation Corp Coordinator Joe Lanier echoed this saying of the YCC’s intern, “I’ve witnessed a consistent ability to motivate and bring students together on completing tasks”. Vice President of both OHS Class of ’23 and the National Honor Society & Captain of the Swim Team, Ethan brought his leadership experience to the JA Pratt & Whitney Entrepreneurial Academy program as the Chief Financial Officer. TAYLOR WILSON Weaver High School in Hartford Received the Elaine Dwyer Scholarship “As class valedictorian, [Taylor Wilson] is a model of excellence for every student-athlete… I think she would make a great coach herself some day,” says Matthew Fuller, Weaver HS Assistant Softball Coach, about the Team Captain. Syreeta Rawlings, ReadyCT Program Manager at Weaver, says “Taylor has shown her spirit of leadership and civic engagement through her work at the school with her peers and teachers”. This leadership and engagement was seen when she continued with the 2020 Entrepreneurial Academy cohort that stuck it out even when the pandemic shut every other program down. Junior Achievement’s Special Events This past year, Junior Achievement was excited to bring all of our events back in person. With strong leadership from our board of directors, event committees, sponsors, and individuals, JA had an incredibly successful year. We are thrilled to have collectively raised over $450,000 and had over 1,700 individuals participating in the Business Hall of Fame, Partners in Achievement Breakfast, Office Warriors, Golf Classic, and Bowl-a-thon events. The proceeds from these events not only helped bring valuable JA programs to thousands of Connecticut students, but also provided opportunities for those same young people to make valuable connections with members of the business community and be inspired for their future careers. Many of JA’s events invite alumni back to share their JA stories through speaking engagements, networking opportunities, and program highlights. Through these experiences, many alumni have not only gained the confidence they need to be successful, but many have landed internship and employment opportunities as well.

After a three-year hiatus, JA was proud to welcome back two Bowl-a-thons hosted by The Hartford and Eversouce. Between these two events, nearly 600 bowlers helped to raise nearly $100,000 in important funds for JA while having fun!
