This year’s outstanding honorees exemplify the meaning of success and the richness of giving back to their community. By their example, they inspire thousands of children in our state to strive for greatness. Each of our honorees brings special meaning to the mission of Junior Achievement: to empower young people to own their future economic success.

HALL OF FAME LAUREATE Rich Caporaso Partner KPMG US

Rich Caporaso retired recently after 47 years in public accounting, including 20 years as a partner at KPMG, working with the financial services industry and specializing in insurance. He was Managing Partner of the KPMG Hartford office for nine years, 2008 - 2017.

His extensive insurance experience includes serving as the lead audit partner on some of the firm’s largest and most prestigious insurance clients. Technical areas of specialization have included SEC and statutory financial reporting, audits of SEC registrants, audits of insurance statutory financial statements and merger & acquisition due diligence.

He has served as chairman of the Auditing Standards Committee of the Connecticut Society of CPA’s, and on the AICPA Insurance Liaison Task Force, Insurance Purchase Accounting Task Force, and Task Forces on Demutualization of Insurance Companies and GAAP for Mutual Life Insurance Companies. Prior to joining KPMG in 2002, he served in Arthur Andersen’s insurance practice, including 16 years as a partner.

Among his many community activities, Rich has been a Board Member of the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the MetroHartford Alliance’s Connecticut Insurance and Financial Services, as well as serving as Board Chair of the Christian Heritage Educational Foundation. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Villanova University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD Jeffrey Flaks

President & CEO Hartford HealthCare

Jeffrey Flaks, President and CEO of Hartford HealthCare, is one of health care’s most progressive leaders, at the helm of Hartford HealthCare which provides services in more than 400 locations and is the state’s second largest employer. With a network of integrated healthcare providers, services, facilities and technology, the organization cares for nearly two million patients and customers annually.

Flaks’ tenure at Hartford HealthCare began in 2004, serving in executive and operational roles at MidState Medical Center in Meriden and at Hartford Hospital, where he was named president in 2011. He became Hartford HealthCare’s chief operating officer in 2013, its president in 2016, and CEO in 2019. He has been recognized widely within the healthcare industry, serves on the American Hospital Association’s Health Systems Council and been named one of the nation’s top 12 industry leaders by Modern Healthcare. He has created landmark strategic partnerships with academic institutions to build an essential pipeline for the healthcare workforce and keep jobs in state.

A Connecticut native, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Ithaca College and a master’s in health services administration at The George Washington University. Flaks is an innovative executive committed to creating an organization that values its colleagues, celebrates diversity and inclusion, and advances health equity for all. He is a director of the Connecticut Science Center, Connecticut Public Broadcasting, the Bushnell Performing Arts Center, and the Connecticut Hospital Association. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as co-chair of the Governor’s Health System Response Team.

SPIRIT OF HOPE Paulette Fox

Executive Director OIC - New Britain

Paulette Fox is Executive Director of Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) in New Britain, which she has led for nearly 39 years, helping adults and youth succeed in school and work.

She was one of the founders of a Saturday Academy Program for African American females in middle and high school, when she was a member of the Coalition of 100 Black Women, New Britain Chapter. She later established the Moving Mountains Sullivan Academy Program, a “Best Practice” program which has served over 900 youth.

Paulette serves on the boards of the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce and the Hospital of Special Care, is a former member of the New Britain Youth Network and is an active member of the school district’s Diversity Equity Leadership Team. She is a member of the New Britain NAACP, and a former member of the Executive Directors Association of OIC of America, including two years as President.

She is a Practitioner for Courageous Conversation About Race, has been a volunteer with the New Britain Museum of American Art for almost four decades and was chairperson of the African American Advisory Committee and founder of Juneteenth New Britain. A graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, she earned a master’s degree in education administration from the University of Hartford.

HALL OF FAME LAUREATE Jeff L. Hubbard

Senior Vice President, Regional Manager Liberty Bank

Jeff L. Hubbard is Commercial Banking Senior Vice President, serving Connecticut’s Greater New Haven Region, for Liberty Bank. He is responsible for business banking development and building commercial relationships, leading his team in the expansion of commercial, middle market and small business lending.

With over 30 years of industry experience, he previously was Market President and Commercial Bank Sales Leader for Connecticut and Western Massachusetts at KeyBank, supervising commercial banking business, specialty lending, capital markets and financial services. Prior to that, he was Commercial Banking Regional Vice President at TD Bank, managing daily business activities in the Hartford region.

Jeff was a 2019 Education Foundation Honoree for ACES; earned the 2019 Commitment and Service Award from the Connecticut Food Bank; and received the 2018 Community Partnership Award from the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, among numerous other awards.

He sits on several boards including New Haven’s Shubert Theater, CT Tourism & Convention Board, Connecticut Bankers Association, Gateway Community College President’s Council, and University of New Haven Business School Deans Council. He is also co-chair of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association. Jeff earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University System of New Hampshire and a Mastery Certificate from UConn Business School, and is a graduate of the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

ENTREPRENEUR David Light

Founder & CEO Valisure

David Light is a prominent biotech entrepreneur and scientist with more than 15 years of broad experience in the field. As Founder and CEO of Valisure, an independent laboratory that checks and certifies the chemical composition of medications and healthcare products before they reach consumers, he helped found, fund, and invent the core technology at Valisure, and led the company’s entry and impact in the market.

A graduate of Yale University, David studied molecular biology and previously worked in a variety of scientific and business roles at start-ups, including Synthetic Genomics and Ion Torrent, prior to Valisure. At Ion Torrent, he developed key technologies that directly led to the semiconductor DNA sequencing company's acquisition by Life Technologies and ran its flagship technology programs through development and global commercialization into the number two sequencing technology in the world.

David is named inventor on numerous patents, published in numerous professional journals, and has been invited to submit testimony at congressional hearings on the introduction of critical bills regarding medication safety and quality. Locally, he sits on the boards of nonprofit organizations, committed to supporting the local community, particularly in advancing entrepreneurship and improving public health.

SPIRIT OF HOPE Alexis Smith

Executive Director New Haven Legal Assistance Association

Alexis H. Smith is the Executive Director of New Haven Legal Assistance Association (NHLAA), a highly regarded leader with a deep connection to the agency’s mission of providing legal services to the poor and advancing justice and equal rights under the law. She previously served as Deputy Director (2012-2017), and before that was a staff attorney at Greater Hartford Legal Aid where she represented children facing denial of their educational rights.

In addition to leading NHLAA, Alexis has served in numerous leadership roles for the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA), including as Secretary of the CBA, a member of the CBA’s House of Delegates, and as co-chair of the CBA Task Force on Policing. She has also served as president of the George W. Crawford Black Bar Association, has earned awards and welldeserved recognition from The West Haven Black Coalition, New Haven Probate Court, and Gateway Community College Foundation, and was named to Connecticut magazine’s 40 Under 40.

Committed to community service, she currently serves on the board of directors for LEAP, ConnCAT, Neighborhood Music School, Horizons at Foote, Common Ground High School, and New Alliance Foundation.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Alexis earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Duke University and law degree from University of WisconsinMadison.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE HONORING R. Nelson "Oz" Griebel June 21, 1949 - July 29, 2020

A highly respected businessman, public servant and community leader, Oz Griebel spent decades as one of Connecticut’s most passionate boosters and staunch defenders, a dynamic and insightful leader who left an indelible mark on his longtime city, region and state. He gave voice to the hopes and dreams, the potential and the possibilities that he could see clearly in Connecticut, so deeply did he care about people, the region and this state.

He constantly and consistently sought ways to bring people together and build bridges, to advance honest, substantive policy proposals and to stand up and speak out for what he believed in his heart and soul would be best for Connecticut.

The incomparable Oz was a leader whose enthusiasm was contagious, and whose relentless advocacy for Greater Hartford and Connecticut was widely known, well respected and highly regarded, within the Constitution State and beyond our borders.

For 16 remarkable years he skillfully led the MetroHartford Alliance, steadfastly combatting the notion that Connecticut was anti-business.

He built career development programs for young professionals, advocated for small business owners and constantly sought opportunities to bring investment to the Capital Region. More often than not, he achieved what he set out to accomplish, gaining new allies and admirers every step of the way.

Tragically taken from us in July 2020, Oz left a legacy that endures and inspires, informed by widespread admiration and appreciation that has not faded or faltered.

“He loved this state and the people who live in it, and he enthusiastically believed that its best days are ahead,” remembers Governor Ned Lamont. “You couldn’t help but be energized by him and by the work he did,” observes Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin.

And Monte Frank, his running mate for the second of two runs for Governor, vividly recalls a man possessing an enormous heart and an incredible intellect. A leader characterized by vision and courage, a man of determination and integrity.

Excelling in football and baseball as a New Jersey youth, Griebel went on to play baseball at Dartmouth College and pitched on the 1970 team that played in the College World Series. He earned a law degree from Suffolk University before becoming a teacher and working throughout the Northeast, prior to coming to Hartford from Boston in 1993 when he became chief executive of Bank of Boston Connecticut. He next led the MetroHartford Alliance, also serving on the board of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association and chairing the state’s Transportation Strategy Board. In his final years, he strongly urged election reforms across Connecticut.

The abundant passion for people that Oz possessed was also evident in his commitment to nonprofit organizations, proudly including Junior Achievement. He particularly enjoyed connecting the business community with students, opening pathways of opportunity that continue to reverberate in the lives of those who participated. He served on the JA Board for many years, including a term as Board Chair, and his leadership and guidance was indispensable in launching programs, including the JA Entrepreneurial Academy, that continue to thrive.

A former legislator who later worked for CBIA, Brian Flaherty is among the multitude, near and far - family and friends, colleagues and contemporaries, individuals in every corner of business and politics - for whom Oz continues to resonate: “He challenged us, cheered us on and left us better than he found us.”
