hen I entered the oil and gas industry 50 years ago in March, I had no idea of what I was getting into. Let me clarify that statement by

saying that my career in the industry has been very fulfilling and gratifying, and I cannot imagine myself in a different career path. In 1970, crude oil was selling for $3 per barrel, and natural gas was selling for 15 cents per thousand standard cubic feet ($0.15/MCF). We don’t even have a symbol on our modern keyboards for the word “cents.” At that time, those were not depressed prices.

GRIT AND PERSEVERANCE THROUGH THE GENERATIONS

He had one kid in college and two in high school. Teenagers are challenging and expensive.

He really went out on a limb when he gave up a good job with a steady paycheck to go out on his own.

One of the ways my dad passed his value of grit to his kids was by his strong work ethic in the good times and the bad. All three of his kids worked hard to have successful careers. We all had challenges in our careers, and that determination to succeed and loyalty to our employers has played a big role in handling those challenges.

It took me a while to learn that the challenges in life are what shape us, and how we handle those challenges helps determine our future and personal growth. I love this analogy: Mountaintops are beautiful, and the views can be breathtaking. It is great to be on the mountaintop and soak in the success of a good climb. However, if you have ever been on a real mountaintop above the tree line, you have noticed that almost nothing grows up there. The valleys are where the soil is fertile, and the green grass grows.

Like this analogy, success feels good, but you do not want to stay there too long and become comfortable. It is in the challenges or valleys where real growth and development occurs in someone’s life. That is where true grit is formed.

Pipe fitter on the Veritas assembly team Tristan and his wife Kelsie recently had twin baby boys. Shortly after birth, little Brooks began having issues breathing which resulted in him being quickly transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. At one point, Brooks’ brain activity was not functioning as normal. Friends, family and co-workers surrounded the Bowins with prayer and encouragement. Little Brooks’ brainwaves returned to normal and he was released to go home with his parents and be reunited with twin brother, Brantley.

Tristan shared that Brooks most recent tests “came back perfect.”

The job nicknamed Omega II in Oklahoma was unusual because the client purchased a pre-made plant from a competitor but had Vulcan crews perform the installation. “Because this job was not our plant, the teamwork really shines,” said Project Manager Clinton Felts. “When it’s our plant, we know who to talk to, who we need to call, and if there’s an issue we know where it is. When it’s not our plant, we really need to have our team set up from the get go. … The construction guys never get the appreciation they deserve. These guys are 7 days a week, 12 or 14 hours a day, knowing they are working toward a layoff. They keep their heads up and work hard.”

From your perspective, what are the biggest lessons learned in the Preakness project for Jasper Ventures?

SA:

The biggest lessons that I think I have learned from this project and may be a little different, but I still think are related. The first is communication. We talk about it and emphasize it, but I do not think we fully understand the effect that it has when we don’t communicate. Communication on projects this size is essential and key to the success of these projects. Second lesson is service. Every one of these groups and departments are serving a different group whether that is serving our clients or serving other departments. This aspect of service is very necessary to have and executing the work with this mindset is what makes us successful.

Each individual group is necessary and relevant to the project so if you took one of those groups away the project would not work and fall flat on its face.

Overall, it would be a congratulations to Jasper Ventures, the interaction between Veritas and Vulcan and all the different parts. The success of this project is a compliment to our ability to work together as a team.

LIVING OUT JASPER CORE VALUES I N N OVAT I O N

The outbreak of COVID-19 and the ensuing community response mandated innovation.

Rather than cancel the monthly Refuel + Refocus for the month of April, the Beyond Business team used creative thinking to come up with imaginative solutions. In April, Refuel + Refocus took on different forms so employees could attend safely. In Troup, five sessions were held to allow much smaller groups to attend. Tables were arranged so employees were socially distanced. For Whitehouse, Refuel + Refocus went virtual and employees were invited to attend via Zoom. Coming up with a game posed quite the challenge, but the same game (Never Have I Ever) worked in both contexts.

As guidelines changed and the office reopened in May, some employees were working from home, while others were present in the office. Regardless of how the guidelines morphed, the Beyond Business team remained committed to Jasper employees and used innovation to continue to serve others.

As Hospitality Specialist in Whitehouse, Su Taylor’s job is to warmly welcome and be the first point of contact for our guests and employees. So, when almost every employee is working from home and the guests are limited to our delivery partners, how does one perform their work? For Su, it was by living out our core value of integrity. Su had the choice to sit at her desk all day watching Netflix and shopping online – no one would really know because the way she normally did her job was not possible.

However, Su showed up every day with a smile on her face and ready to serve in whatever way she could. She intentionally found ways to assist others and meet needs. This is an excellent demonstration of the person Su is, even when no one is watching. She consistently showed up and demonstrated in tangible ways that she is a person of integrity and the employees in Whitehouse were beneficiaries of her servant’s heart and work ethic.

Our Jasper Ventures employees demonstrated responsiveness to the needs in their communities through the pandemic with bountiful generosity. With a total amount of $2.2 million given on the East Texas Giving Day, we are proud to say that Jasper Ventures employees gave $19,723.32. Because of Jasper’s Employee Match fund, we were able to contribute $28,388.32 to various nonprofits across the East Texas area. Thanks to all our employees who contributed!

The Jasper Ventures family had another opportunity to serve a local ministry during the stay-at-home. The REC in Whitehouse was providing more than a 100 snack packs per week to families with kids in our community.

The Quality Control (QC) team exemplified the value of ownership during a recent project.

The Oklahoma site, Omega II, turned into a trying project that the Quality Control team was not expecting, but they quickly rallied together to get the job done. Jeremy Lightfoot led the team from what should be a weekend-fix to seven weeks working in Oklahoma on the project. Jeremy said regarding his team members, “I had a great group of guys that stepped up when I asked without complaint and argument.” The QC team members who went to Oklahoma were Andy Norman and Elvis Carreno, while James McCarty held down the fort in Troup. “James wasn’t in Oklahoma and I didn’t have to worry about him and the others who were helping ­— they are great guys who have a lot integrity and they showed it.” Thanks to the QC team and others who took ownership of this project and made sure that it was completed with excellence.

Kelly Cooper, piping team coordinator at Veritas, really stepped up during these crazy days. Julie Doucet, vice president of engineering, said of Kelly, “He is well respected by those around him because of his striving for excellence as well as his positive attitude. As we work towards engineering and design excellence, Kelly is leading by example.

Being A Light in the Workplace

In these difficult times of a pandemic and oil industry waverings, it is easy to become overwhelmed with worry and step into that negative cycle as easily as one steps into a pair of work boots. But as the famously depressed donkey Eeyore from the children’s classic Winnie the Pooh said, “The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops. Eventually.” And so will be the case with our current struggles. In the meantime, how do we continue to carry out our duties in a way that promotes peace in our homes and working families, and is a light for those around us?

In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ instructs us to “Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to you Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). What better witness for Jesus Christ could we be than to be a light during our current national crisis – allowing others to see a peace that passes all understanding in a world heavy with chaos.
