A Roncalli Catholic High School Publication | Winter 2024
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Roncalli Catholic Family,
As the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to reflect on and celebrate the incredible Roncalli Catholic community. Our alumni, parents, teachers, students, and friends consistently go above and beyond to support our mission. I am filled with gratitude and joy for the unwavering dedication of this amazing community we proudly call family.
My heart is truly filled with gratitude for the hard work and dedication of our staff and students, both inside the classroom and in their determination and willingness to work with charitable organizations throughout Omaha. It brings me so much joy to witness their passion and commitment that makes our school such a special place.
In August of 2023, we embarked on a Capital Campaign in an attempt to raise $4.5 million dollars. Just over a year later we have raised more than $4 million, which is a testament to the high level of support shown by those in our community. In this magazine you can find our annual donor report for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
Our campus has been transformed and work is ongoing. Work on our athletic field and track was completed in October. The plans have been finalized for upgrading our science labs and work will begin in May 2025. The ability to teach both lectures and labs in the same room greatly impacts science education, and our students and staff will benefit exponentially from the upgrade of our science labs.
As we approach the end of the first semester and begin the second, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the amazing progress our students have made. We are so proud of their accomplishments, and we know that they have worked tirelessly to achieve them. As we move forward, we humbly ask for your prayers and support so our students can continue to flourish in their journey of growth and development. Your encouragement and guidance will help them cultivate the virtues of Wisdom, Courage and Faith that will serve them well throughout their lives. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students and their success. We are truly blessed to have you as part of our community.
Sincerely,

Sean Keisling President

RCHS senior Victoria Bilotta competed at the Class C Nebraska State Golf Championships in North Platte on Oct. 14th and 15th. Bilotta finished in a tie for 46th with a two day total of 199, which included a 97 on day two. “I could not be more proud of Victoria and her mental toughness,” said RCHS golf coach Chad Mustard. “She represented RCHS well.”
Honors Biology students finished up their chemistry of life unit by exploring enzyme activity. Hydrogen peroxide is formed continually as a by-product of biochemical processes in the body, but is also toxic to cells if not broken down. Students compared the rate of an uncatalyzed reaction to that of a catalyzed reaction using fresh pork liver containing the catalase enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide.

The freshmen celebrated the end of their first month of high school with their freshmen retreat on Sept. 6. The focus of the retreat is to get to know our four major patrons: St. Jean Baptiste de la Salle, St. Peter Fourier, Bl. Alix LeClerc, and of course, Pope St. John XXIII (Angelo Roncalli’s papal name). They also had opportunities for free time, playing ultimate frisbee and Jedi Hockey, finally taking St. Anthony of Padua’s “Be Satisfied with Me” reflection to the adoration chapel for some quiet time. In the end, they (along with other transfers) received their John XXIII pins which they may wear for their graduation in 2028.

“Pride in Our Future” Capital Campaign

Roncalli Catholic High School is a unique place, and in August leadership began the process of taking the school to the next level. RCHS partnered with Steier Group in 2023 to launch the campaign with the goal of making the RCHS campus even better.
President Sean Keisling, school leadership and the RCHS Board of Directors are committed to providing the school’s staff and students with all the resources necessary to be successful everyday. Committing to the capital campaign is a key step toward making sure that happens. The campaign has raised over $4 million to date, but the work is not done and higher goals are in sight.
September 13th was a special night at RCHS. We debuted our new athletic field complete with brand new turf and celebrated homecoming with our entire Roncalli Catholic family. The track has also been completed and we couldn’t be more thankful to all of the tremendous people who turned our dream into reality.
Construction of the new science labs is scheduled to begin in May 2025!

Quinn Left a Legacy at Alma Mater
RCHS grad displayed leadership on and off the field
Kevin Quinn grew up at 44th and Fort Street and attended St. Richard’s School playing in almost every sport. He was a standout leader at Rummel and Roncalli from 1971 to 1975, excelling both on the field and in the classroom. As a senior, Kevin was the quarterback and co-captain of the football team, ranking among the top players in the Metro Conference for passing yards and touchdowns. He also played basketball for four years and competed in shot put and discus on the track team.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Kevin was deeply involved in various social activities, including the Sodality Club and the Letterman’s Club. He is recognized as the spiritual leader for the first graduating class of Roncalli Catholic High School, the Class of ‘75.

Kevin earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Business Administration from the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), where he was the editor of the student newspaper, The Gateway, authoring hundreds of news stories from 1975 to 1980. He briefly played on the UNO football team in 1976, until a serious back injury ended his playing career.
For over 32 years, Kevin was a vital figure in the Omaha Irish music scene, performing in bands and touring in countries like Ireland and Scotland. He promoted numerous Irish music concerts and brought many bands from Ireland to Omaha, enriching the local culture. Kevin had a distinguished 36-year career at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring as Chief of Public Affairs due to health reasons. In his forties, he was diagnosed with scleroderma, a crippling and painful autoimmune disease for which there is no cure. Quinn ultimately lost his battle with the disease on Oct. 21, 2024.
Family, friends, music, and laughter were the cornerstones of Kevin’s life. Kevin often spoke of his parents who instilled an incredible work ethic in him and his six siblings. Kevin was a proud father to Hilary and Jarrod and a cherished grandfather to Zachary, Trevor, and Aubrey, with prayerful thoughts of his late grandson, Xavier.
1975 Roncalli Catholic graduate Kevin Quinn was a standout athlete for the Crimson Pride and was part of the first ever graduating class at RCHS.

RCHS Track Named After Special Family Educator, coach helped shape
lives for three decades
The road to building a new track at Roncalli Catholic High School has been a long one and on Oct. 4th the Crimson Pride family were filled with Pride when the Higgins Family Track was unveiled. The road that led to dedicating the track to the Higgins Family has been even longer.
It all started with one man, Roger Higgins, who in 1955, after an exceptional college football and basketball career, began teaching and coaching at St. Cecil-
ia’s Cathedral High School, where he remained for almost 20 years. Shortly after he started at Cathedral, he became a track and field coach, a passion he would hold onto until his death a half a century later. Higgins had a short stint teaching and coaching at public school, but during those few short years he never forgot his faith. The Catechism lessons his grandmother imparted on him as a child led him to follow his true vocation, teaching and coaching at a Catholic school. Higgins started at Roncalli in
1980 where he would work until his death 30 years later. During those 30 years he was a biology teacher, the activities director, a basketball coach, a football coach, the cross country coach, the groundskeeper, and the head track and field coach.
Roger Higgins’ love of athletics and Catholic schools went beyond just him. All eight of his children graduated from Catholic schools and all eight played sports. Because of him, most of his children decided to pursue careers as teachers, coach-
es, athletic directors, and or sports officials. Three of his children and one grandchild even worked here at Roncalli Catholic. Continuing this legacy, all 18 of his grandchildren were previously or are currently athletes, officials, coaches, or teachers. Seven of whom proudly graduated from Roncalli Catholic.
Throughout his 55-year career in education,. Higgins wore many hats, but his heart always belonged to track and field. Even after retiring in 1992, he remained a fixture at Roncalli Catholic until 2010, dedicating himself as the groundskeeper and, of course, a track coach.
Roger Higgins’ last day as a coach was May 22, 2010, at the Nebraska State
Track and Field Meet. His passion for track and field lasted until the very end. Just a few weeks after the state meet, he passed away, leaving a profound impact on the Higgins family and our community.
In that same year, Higgins and his family were honored with induction into the Nebraska Coaches Association Hall of Fame in recognition of their lifelong contributions to athletics. They continue to dedicate their time, talent, and treasure not only to athletics, but to our great school.
The dedication of the Higgins Family Track ensures that Coach Roger Higgins will live on through the hard work and dedication of the athletes at Roncalli Catholic High School.

On Oct. 4, we not only celebrated a new track but also the enduring spirit of a man who devoted his life to family, education, athletics, and faith.

We were honored and blessed to have members of the Higgins family on hand for the unveiling of the Higgins Family Track on Oct. 4 for a home game against Omaha Gross Catholic.
Roger Higgins’ impact on RCHS students can still be felt to this day. He dedicated 55 years of his life to education, more than 30 of those right here at RCHS.

Tom McNeil (‘81)
Tom McNeil is a proud Roncalli Catholic graduate from the Class of 1981. After a couple of years in college, McNeil took over his father’s business at the age of 28 while raising two-year-old twins. He led the company for 42 years, owning it for 32 of those, before recently retiring on September 1, 2024. “Roncalli Catholic has always held a special place in my heart, not only because of the lifelong friendships I formed but also because I believe wholeheartedly in the school’s mission and the work being done in academics and athletics,” said McNeil.
Roncalli Catholic is deeply grateful for the McNeil Family and their commitment to our mission at Roncalli Catholic. Their contributions throughout the years have profoundly enriched our school in numerous ways and with their help we are building a brighter future for our students and community.

1981 Roncalli Catholic graduate Tom McNeil took over Mainelli Mechanical Contractors 42 years ago and turned it into a one of the most successful mechanical contracting firms in the Midwest.

Swing with Pride
35th annual golf event hosts 216 players at Players Club
Mother Nature cooperated and offered up a beautiful afternoon for the 35th Annual Swing with Pride A. Len Leavitt Memorial Golf Open held at the Players Club at Deer Creek on July 19.
Alumni and friends got the day started with lunch and fellowship and followed it up with 18 holes of golf. After golf, participants were able to enjoy dinner and also got a chance to win raffle items and pin prizes.
“What an awesome day,” said RCHS Vice President T.J. Orr. “We love our golf event. Every year we get to see familiar faces and the sense of unity and camraderie among everyone is inspiring. And most importantly they know they are helping out our students.”
The event raised more than $60,000 for RCHS and is one of the pivotal fundraisers held throughout the year.
“Everyone has a great time, but most importantly the event is able to raise money to make sure our students and staff have everything they need to become successful,” stated Roncalli Catholic President Sean Keisling.
We’d love to see you at our next event! Learn more about upcoming events at Roncalli Catholic High School by visiting https:// www.roncallicatholic.org/ourschool/events.

Courage
As guides, we will help students face real-world challenges so they can persevere — with mental and moral strength — setting them on the right path to learn, grow and thrive in a diverse world.

Pride Magazine Update
We have made the decision to provide our Pride Magazine twice a year, in November and in May. The November magazine will be available in print and online editions and will include all of our year-end financial information and our donor report. This issue will also feature stories about the people who make our Roncalli Catholic Family so uniquely special. The May issue will be available at the end of the month as an online only edition.
