THEGREATNESSOFGO-NOODLE By Romy Frastai (Grade 2) If you want to be a healthy student or have a healthy child then I recommend an app called GoNoodle. To begin, more than 10 million kids get active with GoNoodle every month. The app helps them become their strongest, smartest, bravest, best selves. In addition, GoNoodle has been used by 1 in 3 teachers, trusted by millions of parents, and loved by kids everywhere. My teacher, Ms. Carolina, uses GoNoodle in our classroom. She said, ?After a long work session, we take a brain break and exercise by using GoNoodle. My students love it!? One parent had a comment about GoNoodle and wanted to share it.?My child used to be a girl who sat around playing video games and now she can exercise with GoNoodle every day, this has really turned her life around.? I also found out that GoNoodle: - Turns screen time into active time -Creates great family fun -Makes your home healthier - Improves behavior and attention -Betters academic performance
THEPLACEFOR MOUTHWATERINGSTEAK By Joaquin Donaldson (Grade 2) Yummy! Que rico! Wow esto es muy rico! That is what you hear when you go to Outback Steakhouse. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Santiago. Everyone that goes to Outback will love the food, service, and refreshing drinks. For instance, the blooming onion is fried to perfection with its crunchy shell and the sauce make it irresistible. This is the bacon cheeseburger and the meat is amazing. I bet you'll ask your mom and dad to go there again. Their hamburgers have a delicious taste, the meat is perfectly cooked, and you can add mayonnaise if you want. The french fries are perfectly cooked and they have a perfect amount of salt. This is the restaurant in Mall Vivo en Los Trapenses so you could just jog there because it?s so close! I recomend you go there with your entire family. Here is the information for the restaurant.

GUARDIANSOFGA'HOOLE ISAWESOME! By: Emma Garfein (Grade 5) My favorite series is Guardians of Ga?hoole by Kathryn Lasky (published by Scholastic Inc.). It?s a series about owls, every main character is an owl, but it?s an animal fantasy series. The progress and detail is astonishing, every single thing that happens, is covered in detail. There are lots of hooks on every chapter. These are stories about the owl kingdom and the fight between good and evil, like the war of the Guardians of Ga?hoole against ?The Pure Ones?. There are so many details in the books that I won?t write them all. The series is based on four best friends that later on become a ?band? with Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, and Digger. Soren is the main character, or protagonist, who keeps the band going on their adventures. Twilight is the fighter and the poet/ singer that scares the enemy by singing a weird fighting poem and makes them go yeep. To yeep is to fall out of the sky with their wings locked against their sides and fall to certain death, except if they regain themselves in time. Digger is the deep thinker and unlocks mysteries and digs deeper into answers. Gylfie is the brains and is super smart. Soren is a Barn owl Tyto Alba. Twilight is a Great Grey Strix Nebulosa. Digger is a Burrowing owl Athene Cunicularia. Gylfie is an Elf Owl Micrathene Whitneyi. Kludd is Soren?s big brother, he betrayed them. Eglantine is Soren?s little sister. Fun Fact, Burrowing owls barely fly, they are a lot better at running than flying so you?ll rarely see a Burrowing owl fly. There are 15 books in the series. During the first 8 books it?s all about them and the Ga?hoole tree. In the rest of the books it?s about the band and other main characters. One thing I found silly is that humans became extinct a long time ago and castles and gardens remain. Every other kind of animal is still alive. The world in the book is really cool. The southern kingdoms are Shadow forest, Beyond the Beyond (which is my favorite), Spirit Woods (where you can
the the scrooms (ghosts) of other owls), Silverveil, The Canyonlands (where the evil St. Aggies is), Forest of Tyto where Soren comes from, The Beaks, Desert of Kuneer where Gylfie and Digger come from, Forest Kingdom of Ambala, The Barrens, and the island of Hoole in the sea of Hoolemere, (where the the Great Ga?hoole tree is). The books don?t say where Twilight comes from. The Northern Kingdoms are, the Glauxian Brothers Retreat (island) , Kiel Bay (island), StormFast island, The Tridents Island, Eslemere island; Glauxian Sisters Retreat, Ice Dagger, Dark Fowl island, the Ice Talons, Bay of Fangs, Hrath?ghar glacier, Pirates Lair, Firth of Fangs, Lagoon of Moss, and the Hrath?ghar mountains. If you want to see how the map looks, I suggest you to go to the library and look at the first few pages of the books. Guardians of Ga?hoole is the best series in the world. I am a nonfiction book person, but I just LOVE this animal fantasy series. I can?t stop reading this mesmerising series. As soon as I read the first book, owls became one of my favorite animals. At the end of each book, it leaves you on a cliffhanger and you feel like you need to read the next book. So I recommend you to go to the library right now and check out Guardians of Ga?hoole, RIGHT NOW!!!!

THEPLAYGROUNDRE-DESIGN By Alex Arthur (Grade 5) You?ve probably passed, and used ( I mean, If you haven?t, you must have no sense of fun whatsoever) the big, new play structure glinting gloriously in the lower playground below the third grade soccer field. You may have walked by it after lunch, or probably after your second recess. This was most likely in the crowd of people rushing back to their respective classes, Probably talking to a friend. But have you ever wondered ?Wow, I wonder who could have put in the effort to make that project a reality?? It all started when the 5th Grade Math Group of 2014, now seventh graders, decided that they should try to get a new grade 1-2 playground. I myself had just entered 3rd grade, and left behind what I still know today as a place where you could spend your recess peeling rust of the slide, or running your fingers along the brick wall on the side, worn smooth by other generations (In other words, the grade 1-2 playground) It needed a change.
Now they did a splendid job, but their magnificent plan was never really utilized. There is still a model of that proposed playground hanging above Mr. Jason's desk. The next year, when I got into 4th grade, Mr. Jason decided to get something like this to actually happen, he needed a bigger team. So the 4th grade math group started to think outside the box. If you can?t beat it, join it. So we thought: ?Why don?t we just make NEW games that would fit into a NEW system to prevent the equipment from getting lost because i?m sure that you can remember the heat, shimmering over the astroturf, nobody really making an effort to play a game or return equipment. That?s why we wanted to make a change, so that if you lost a ball there would be consequences, and that we would know who checked out what.
the cascades of obstacles like long division, converting centimetres to inches(And vice-versa), cost and space, you know that this is all really what happened. I was always the last one looking around the table at lunch, robbed of somewhere to sit, without any rest from the sun getting magnified through the windows, tinted with dust. But pretty soon, growth mindsets turned into division again, and slideshows into Brain Pop videos about fibonacci. So with my math group teammates, I was able to fix, maybe even if you are an ever-smiling, face-glowing and permanent optimist, glorify, the playground. The playground was redesigned. It was done. Or was it? We still had the big moment to come. We needed to present to Mr. Jon. So we did. And it went perfectly. The system was approved, and the playground you can use now and have been able to use for over a month from when I?m writing this came to be. And throughout this struggle, this extraordinary piece of work, one theme remained. GRIT.
This being written by one of the people who actually worked on this project, I had a unique perspective. I felt the immense struggle in the push through all of 4

DOYOUWANTTOSAVENATURE? By Lizzie Arthur (Grade 3) Do you want save to the earth? If you do, keep reading. If you don?t, do not keep reading. Maybe try another article. On with the story. Now you?ll finally know who this is about Jane Goodall. She was born on April 3rd, 1934 in London, England. Jane loves animals. She spent all her time in her late teens to early twenty?s saving money so that she could go to Africa. To do this Jane had to work with lots of different jobs. LOTS of jobs! When Jane was 23, she finally had gathered enough money to go visit a friend who lived on a farm in Kenya. When she arrived, she stayed in her friend's house for a while, and then moved on to Gombe national park where she met English archeologist Louis Leakey, who offered her a job observing and studying chimpanzees. When Jane began to study chimpanzees in 1960, she had no training nor education. This may have actually helped her to study in her own unique way. Jane spent the next 40 years of her life studying chimpanzees. She discovered lots of interesting facts over her years of studying. When Jane started studying the chimps she named each and every one of them. At the time scientists used numbers instead of names, but not Jane. She named each chimp reflecting the chimps' personalities or their appearances. An example, she named the first one that approached her "David Graybeard" because he had a gray chin. Jane made lots of important discoveries. For example, she saw a chimp stick a blade of grass into a termite hole in order to get some termites to eat. There are lots more discoveries Jane made. Please go to Jane Goodall's website, Roots And Shoots. I hope you take my advice.

JOSEPHSCHOOLING: THEJOURNEYTOSUCCESS By Keira Simon (Grade 4) Splash! Splash! The crowd went wild as Joseph Schooling leaped as fast as a cheetah into the pool. He took the lead in the butterfly 100 meters swimming competition in Rio olympics 2016. He zoomed ahead of everybody, even Michael Phelps! Joseph Schooling, the 100 meters butterfly representative for Singapore, was ahead of all the other swimmers. He touched the wall with the the tip of his finger and immediately flipped and resumed swimming. The olympics record line was trailing behind him just a few meters behind. Suddenly, one section of the crowd went wild. There was screaming, cheering, and applauding. ?I can?t believe it! Joseph Schooling from Singapore won first place and broke the olympics record!!! ?Said the commentator in Portuguese astonished. But wait a second, don?t you wonder how this all started? Here?s what happened but first here are some facts about him:
He trains in the US He won Singapore its first gold medal ever He is 21 years old. His parents are Colin Schooling and May Schooling It all started when he was young,13 years old to be exact. He had a dream. A dream to be a olympics champion swimmer. A dream to help Singapore win their first ever medal. He pursued that dream for 7 years. Even at a young age,he always
beat the older kids at swimming. His parents suspected that the conversation that he had with his grand-uncle Lloyd Valberg, who was an Olympic athlete influenced him to have a dream to be a swimmer. Everybody in the neighborhood knew Joseph Schooling to be an excellent swimmer. His dream required him to move to the US and for his parents to shuttle in between US and Singapore. "I have got to take care of two households on both sides of the world,? said Mrs. Schooling. It wasn?t an easy road to success. Joseph Schooling?s road to success were filled with bumps and setbacks. In the 2012 olympics , which took place in London, he had suffered a minor setback. A setback which I personally think is silly. It was all the Singapore Olympics Swimming Committee?s fault. The Singapore Swimming Olympics Committee had provided him with swimming apparel that the olympics did not approve of. He had to wear some other swimsuit, swimcap, and goggles. He was so affected by that that he did not swim very well. As a result, he obviously did not manage to get a medal. He even missed the prize giving because he was doing a math test. He was devastated but that didn?t stop him from persevering and and getting to where he is right now. Eventually, after years of training and hard work,he beat Michael Phelps,Chad le Clos ,and Lรกszlรณ Cseh, tied them all in second place and broke the olympics record. You should watch it on youtube! If you have a dream, you should pursue it and don?t give up no matter what. Whether it is to be a singer like Taylor Swift, to be an author like J.K Rowling,a president like President Obama, or an athlete like Usain Bolt, that is how all successful people began. Follow your dream!

RECESSSOCCERATNIDO By Agustin Mejia (Grade 2) Grade 1 and 2 recess soccer at Nido can improve by following these tips. To begin, no slide tackles should be done. If you slide tackle during the game, the teacher will ask you to play something else that day for recess. This rule is to keep students safe, so please no slide tackles. If the ball is kicked out of bounds by the yellow team, the other team will get a throw in. Also, no hand balls. Recess soccer will also improve if all players follow these agreements: be kind, be safe, and have fun. Roberto Villavicencio, a second grade soccer player, says, ?Do not brag I won you lost!? Nacho Encensio says, ?Don?t do something bad to others. Don?t think you are the best.? Mr. Chad recommends, ?The soccer players could have even more fun if they improve their sportsmanship. They could start by giving more high fives to each other, lift each other up when mistakes are made, and pass the ball to everyone on the field.? If you play fair and show sportsmanship the teacher might give you a bucket filling, green ticket too. SOME IMPORTANT RULES TO REMEMBER: Throw-ins A throw-in is taken when the ball crosses a sideline and leaves the field. The two basic soccer rules for a proper throw-in are to have both feet on the ground and to throw the ball with both hands over the head. Fouls The common rule of thumb on fouls is ?If it looks like a foul, it probably is.? A player cannot kick, trip, jump at, charge, strike, push, hold, or spit at an opponent. Bumping, leaning or going shoulder-to-shoulder while competing for a ball is not a foul until the hands or elbows come up. No slide tackles at Nido.

THEGRITOFBETHANY By Briana Perez (Grade 5) Bethany Hamilton is one of the best surfers today but there?s a story behind her. On October 31, 2003 when Bethany was 13 she was out surfing at Tunnels Beach Kauai, Hawaii with her friends at around 7:30 a.m. At that time a bunch of turtles were swimming near the beach. Suddenly Bethany felt pressure on her left arm and noticed the water turning red. A 14 foot (4.2 meters) tiger shark thought she was a turtle and bit her left arm off!! It bit her arm just below her shoulder. Her friend?s dad made a tight bandage with a surfboard leash to try to stop the blood. They took Bethany to the hospital where her father was going to have knee surgery. But instead of her father having surgery she did. Bethany made it to today by having perseverance and grit. Bethany said that, ?not surfing... just didn?t work for me.? About a month after the shark attack, the doctor gave her the go-ahead to surf. Bethany went right at it. With happiness, nervousness, excitement, and many other mixed emotions that fueled her determination Bethany paddled out into the ocean even though there were butterflies in her stomach and other feelings fighting against her. She crawled on to her board and stood up while her family cheered her on. Despite the challenges she was able to catch on her first wave with one arm. Later Bethany competed in a surfing event, but it was much more difficult than she had anticipated. She was thinking about giving up, wondering if she could be successful anymore in the sport she loved. But instead of giving up, she decided to try a new perspective. So Bethany joins her church?s youth group on a missionary trip to Thailand where a tsunami had just hit. While she was there she learned that other people have even harder challenges. Like entire families dying from the horrific tsunami of 2004. During this journey she met a little boy, who appeared on the beach right after the tsunami. The boy didn?t seem to have parents, and he was so traumatized from the tsunami that he wouldn?t go near the water, and wouldn?t talk. Bethany showed him that the water was safe, and taught the boy how to surf. That boy taught her a lesson that even though he was scared, he went back into the water and didn?t give up. The moment also taught her not to be ashamed of how poorly she
did in the surfing competition that took place before her transformational trip to Thailand. Bethany has grit because she had to relearn how to surf, but this time with one arm. Bethany stated ?to me it was like never getting in a car again because you?re afraid of having another collision.? Since she had to relearn how to surf, Bethany had to start with a long board because it is easier. Then she slowly adapted and as she advanced in her surfing the boards decreased in size. Also Bethany didn?t just have to adapt to surfing, she had to adapt to cutting, dressing herself, carrying things, playing the guitar, tying her shoes, etc. To do all those things Bethany had to have GRIT and PERSISTENCE. She made all of these changes with determination, making the changes she needed to in small but steady steps. Even though she could surf with one arm on the smallest board there was still a struggle. The problem was that when she was duck diving (which is what surfers do when they?re paddling out to catch a wave and a wave that they?re not prepared to catch is about to break on them? they literally dive like a duck under the water to avoid being hit by the wave) Bethany couldn?t keep a good grip on the board and it kept slipping from her hand. Bethany tried many times but she could never keep a good grip on her board. To help her keep her grip her dad made her a handle for the middle of her board. The handle worked she duck dived just like she did when she had two arms. Even though some days were difficult Bethany never gave up A little bit later Bethany returned home from a competition with fifth place. ?If you can get fifth place you can get fourth place,? her mother remarked. Six months later Bethany competed in a even bigger contest in Waikiki. After that in 2004 she competed in Australia and won first place. Ever since the incident with the shark Bethany Hamilton is one of the most well known surfers. She has true grit. Many people have been inspired by her. You don?t need your arm to be bitten off to have grit or persistence just don?t give up. ?Courage doesn?t mean you don?t get afraid. Courage means you don?t let fear stop you.? -Bethany Hamilton11
Spot ligh t By Lena Espinoza ( Grade 4) Often times, humans like us tend to find grit in stories about sports and adventure, but sometimes the greatest grit is found in the tiniest animal! Meet Judy, Judy Hopps, a great bunny and police officer from Bunnyburrow, in the movie Zootopia. Even though her training was hard to become the first female and first rabbit police officer, she did it. How? By the power of GRIT!_________________ How did Judy first meet grit? It was when she was a young rabbit, back in her hometown. It was the official Bunnyburrow primary school show as all eyes gazed at Judy as she performed in the spotlight with her friends and declared her dream to the world, to become a police officer! After the show ended, it was Judy?s chance to shine, with the power of GRIT! To help her friends, Judy confronts the school bully who stole some fair tickets from her friends. Judy requests the tickets, but the bully, instead of being kind and friendly, he scratches Judy in the face with his claws. At that moment, Judy takes the tickets away and gives them back to her friends. What would Judy say about training in one word? She would say demanding, rough and of course encouraging to her police officer career, it was important to know that work could be
JUDY HOPPS AND HER GRIT demanding but you still do not give up, even though Judy fell in freezing cold water filled with ice to the top, also falling directly into the toilet and being shouted and embarrassed at. But at the end, she graduated first in her class and finally, after so much hard work, she became a police officer! Judy worked hard, she worked for what she believed, she worked for what she wanted and showed it truly throughout the movie, and so can you in your own life! You can do it in many marvelous ways, for example, in an important school project to becoming a better swimmer. As Michael Jordan said ? I fail, I fail and fail until I succeed.? and so can you. Even though Judy Hopps is a made up character she?s one of the greatest examples of grit ever created. Judy inspires me, who inspires you in your life?

STUCKINACAVE By Claire Gillen (Grade 4) It was a dark and stormy night at the beach and Claire was cowering in a cave hoping to be found before the next day. Now you might be wondering ?How did she get there, and how will she get out? It all started about a week before when Claire?s parents told her the news,? We?re going to the beach!? they said. ?When?? asked Claire. ?Tomorrow,? her mom answered. So they packed and the next day they headed off. As soon as they arrived at the hotel, Claire headed straight for the beach. She spent all of her time there collecting seashells, playing in the sand, and swimming. Seven days she spent there so far had only felt like 7 hours! On Saturday morning Claire woke up,dressed, and headed for the beach, but not before her mom stopped her. ?Whoa, whoa, whoa! Stop right there young lady!? Claire stopped dead in her tracks. ?Don?t you want some breakfast?? Claire breathed a sigh of relief as she sat down. ?Yeah but, after breakfast can I go?? she asked. ?Of course!? her mom answered. After she wolfed down her breakfast, Claire ran to the beach. She was going to collect seashells first. She found one that was purple, and one that had yellow stripes. But then she saw one that was even more extraordinary than the other two. It seemed to sparkle in the sunlight and was a light shade of turquoise. She immediately bent down to pick it up only to find that she would regret it later on. Suddenly, the seashell lit up a path and Claire followed it. She followed it into a
cave and kept on following until she realized that cave had shut behind her. Now you might be thinking ?How can a cave shut????!!!!??!?!? And in a panic,Claire was thinking the exact same thing! ?My parents will surely find me...I hope,? she muttered out loud. So she decided to sit down and wait. She tried to think happy thoughts, but it was hard not to wonder if her parents would never find her, or if she?d die there. She sat for hours and soon found that she was very, very hungry for she had only had a bowl of cereal for breakfast, and it was already past lunch. ?I?m so hungry!? she moaned. Soon she heard the plit, plit, platter sound of rain hitting against the cave. It soon turned to a much louder sound...plonk, plonk, plonk! It grew louder by the minute. Claire was sure it was going to become a big storm. Now she could hear thunder in the distance. ?Yep it?s going to be a storm, and a big one at that,? she sighed. She sat there for 4 hours until she realized it was nearly 7:00pm! She also realized that there was a path she never noticed before. ?Why not follow it and see if it leads me home?? Claire thought, ?I was so focused on my parents finding me and not trying to find them myself.? So she started walk through the twisty, turny path. However she had only walked for a few minutes when she came to a maze. ?Hmmm... strange,?she thought, ?I should probably turn back? ,but I?m not going to.? There were three paths to follow, one was yellow and squiggly, the next was red and zig zagy, and the third was purple and straight. She thought she should take the squiggly one because the path seemed kind of squiggly to her, kind of twisty and turny. She made her way through the maze and before she knew it she was out of the maze. Out of the maze and out of the path. In fact she was standing right in front of her hotel. ?Yay!?Claire shouted as she danced in happiness. She didn?t care that she was getting soaked in the rain, she was home!(Well at her hotel anyways).Claire was glad that she trusted herself and didn?t give up. She should grit! You should keep trying just like Claire did and not wait for other people to do things for you. Good luck and keep trying! 15

MOVIEREVIEW: HOWTOTRAINYOURDRAGON2 By Roberto Villavicencio (Grade 2) The recent movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, was the best animated movie of the year! The movie is full of action, and it only has two parts that are romantic. The story is mostly about Hiccup and his friends that save all the dragons from a mean ruler called Drago Bludvist and the Bewilderbeast . The main character is Hiccup who loves dragons. Hiccup has a Night Fury dragon named Toothless. My favorite part is when Hiccup and Toothless fight against the Bewilderbeast and Drago Bludvist. The movie was produced by 21st Century Fox in 2014. In that year, it was the most exciting movie. The main characters are Hiccup, Astrid,Snotlout,Fishlegs,Ruffnut,Tuffnut. Now it's your turn to watch the movie.
