By Arjun Randall (Grade 3) If you want the feeling of being in a totally different universe you must pick up the book, Wings of Fire written by Tui T. Sutherland. The story takes place in Pyrrhia' shrouded past. The setting is the Claws of Cloud Mountain. It is one of the oldest mountains in Pyrrhia. It is the home of the Skywing tribe and the location of Queen Scarlet?s palace. Another setting is under the mountain in the caves. The only two ways to get in or out are by swimming or going through the sky hole which has a giant boulder blocking it.

Dragon Charact er Descript ions Cl ay A burly (fat) from the Mudwing tribe who likes to eat and sleep.

Tsunami A fierce Seawing who is also the daughter of Queen Coral. She is the first one who wants to escape the caves.

There are seven dragon tribes in Pyrrhia.

St arf l ight The five main characters are called the Dragonets of Destiny because they are supposed to save the world.

They have to ESCAPE the mountain and go into to Pyrrhia, maybe changing the dragon world forever. The epilogues are crazy cliffhangers. So you will want to read on in the series. The prologues are awesome and the books are great. So stop wasting time and go buy that book now!!!

A very smart Nightwing who is a good thinker. He has read all the scrolls a bunch of times and knows a lot.

ANIMALS& NATURE ADAYINTHELIFEOFANORCA

By Sebastian Spinelli (Grade 2) A pod of orcas wakes up in the glacial waters off the McMurdo Ice Shelf! This pod has lived near Antarctica for generations and the McMurdo Ice Shelf contains many delicious penguin colonies and seal mating areas. The orcas are splashing around looking for their breakfast.

Just days before, a mother orca gave birth to a calf. The calf now leaps into the air and splashes down! Afterwards, the orcas spot two seals relaxing on a chunk of ice.

The oldest orca sees how thick the ice is and after that the orca makes a signal with its blow hole to make a massive wave.

They try to knock the seals off the floating ice chunk with the wave and they succeed. One orca circles the seals then two orcas go below and the only way out is up to the water?s surface. Oh no the seals are in enormous trouble. With the prey in the water they tear the seals apart. Their scarlet blood, tails and flippers look terrifying. Seventeen minutes later, the group of orcas finish their delicious meal.

Later that same day, the mother and calf are swimming together. Surprisingly, the calf gets separated from its mother because of the splashing waves of a dashing motor boat? But suddenly, the mama orca realizes the calf is missing. It zooms through the glacial waters, it?s family followed its mom. The orcas are together again.

ADAYINTHELIFEOFMYCAT

By Emilia Jane Graether (Grade 2) One morning, before the sun even rises, a soft yellow, white, and light-brown cat named Cinnamon runs to the house.

Somebody opens the door and picks her up. They bring Cinnamon into Emilia?s bed while the girl is fast asleep.

Cinnamon purrs and purrs. She is happy. With the lights off, Cinnamon?s eyes are glowing green as Emilia gets out of bed. Cinnamon watches closely and then runs away and hides under the kitchen table. Cinnamon hearts, ?Rarrr, Rarrr? coming closer. She runs as fast as she can. She wants to go outside. Then a nice girl opens the door, Cinnamon runs outside to find a comfortable resting spot. She sleeps for three hours.

The cat wakes up, stretches, then sees Emilia sitting in the grass.

Emilia sees Cinnamon too. They hug each other. Cinnamon?s tail swirls with happiness. Cinnamon rubs her soft fur on Emilia?s body while she enjoys the petting.

Later on in the day, Cinnamon jumps up in the air. She sees a small bird. Suddenly, Cinnamon?s sharp teeth grab the bird?s soft feathers.

Cinnamon sees the sun is going down. She runs to the house, eats her dinner, and waits until she is put into Emilia?s bed. When it?s time, someone picks up Cinnamon and puts her next to Emilia in bed. She spins her body into a curled up ball and when it is quiet she falls asleep.

HOWTO HOWTOMAKESUGARCRYSTALS STEP #1

By Imogen Wal ker (Grade 2) Recently, I made some amazing sugar crystals.They can sometimes be grown in different shapes. You can even decide on it?s color! I am thrilled to show you guys how to make sugar crystals.

Caut ion: Only do this experiment under parent supervision.

STEP #2 Materials: 2-3 cups of sugar

STEP #2

A saucepan 1 cup of water A clean wooden skewer

STEP #3

A tall,narrow glass with a lid that has a hole in it.

Food coloring (optional) Procedure Step 1: Pour the water into the saucepan and set to boil.

Step 2: When the water is boiling add about Âź of sugar into the boiling water.

STEP #5

Step 3: Stir the sugar and water until the sugar has dissolved.

Step 4: Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 until the water can dissolve no more.

STEP #6

Warning: Be extra careful when you do Step 4 because you co uld get burnt badly.

Step 5: Cool the sugar syrup for at least 20 minutes.

Step 6: Drop in some food coloring (it can be any color) Step 7: Pour the sugar syrup into the jar until it is almost full.

STEP #8

Step 8: Stick the skewer into the jar.

Step 9: Secure the skewer with plasticine.

Step 10: Leave the jar undisturbed for 3-7 days.

Don't be afraid to eat them, share them or keep them!

HOWTO HOWTOMAKEBRAZILIAN BRIGADEIRO

By Beatriz Souza Moreira (Grade 3C) I love eating brigadeiro especially and the best recipes to make brigadeiro are my uncle?s famous Brazilian brigadeiro recipe and my friend, Olivia her mum?s recipe is great. I think brigadeiros are the perfect sweets for parties, weddings, and celebrations. So why not make ten or twenty or maybe thirty! I am really electrified to teach how to make these yummy treats from my homeland!

Mat erial s 14 ounces of canned condensed milk 3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa Plastic tip spatula

Caut ion: Don?t l et t he mixt ure st ay t oo l ong on t he dry surf ace because t he brigadeiro wil l be t o col d.

Step 6: After the mixture cooled off, roll the mixture into balls.

Step 7: Pour the type of sprinkle that you chose into a bowl .

Step 8: Roll the chocolaty balls into the bowl with sprinkles (so it doesn?t stick in your hands).

Step 9: Make sure the candy dishes aren?t bended.

Step 10: Put each ball in each candy dish.

Step 11: Serve your guests.

Step 12: Enjoy your sweet chocolaty balls of lucky goodness.

CONCLUSION Make a bunch of these on a tray and you?ll have the best Instagram photos (if you have Instagram) ever but remember don?t put PERSONAL INFORMATION.

Procedure Step 1: Collect all materials and set them on the kitchen counter.

Step 2: Wash the pan because otherwise your brigadeiros will taste weirdly disgusting.

Step 3: Combine the condensed milk, cocoa, and butter in the saucepan.

Step 4: Bring the saucepan to a simmer.While stirring the mixture until thick which is about 10 minutes.

Step 5: Take the saucepan and place it on a dry surface until the heat has vanished.

NIDO'SGOTTALENT...ANDGRIT! How long do you practice?

By Olivia Neuhauser (Grade 2) Angela Duckworth, the famous researcher from Penn University, describes talent by something you can grow with passion, grit, and perseverance. She explains it like this, "Grit is a combination of passion and persistence.

Demonstrating grit could involve:

Maya: 3 and a half hours a day, 6 days a week, which equals 21 hours a week.

What do you do to practice?

Carmela: Listen carefully to coach. If we do the gymnastics move correctly then he congratulates us, but if we don?t do it correctly, then he encourages us to do it again, and again, until we get it right.

Maya: We need to focus on the moment. We need to be tight in our moves. We can?t be thinking about anything else during our practices.

-Finishing what you begin

How do you use a growth mindset ?

-Working hard even after experiencing failure or when you feel like quitting

Maya: When I?m stuck on something, Carmela helps me with advice or encourages me.

-Sticking with a project or activity for more than a few weeks.

Carmela: Sometimes I think I can?t do it because it was really hard, but with the help of Maya and my coach I continue to train and eventually I would advance.

I look at other people who are experts.

I practice quite a lot. I never quit reading. Even when I come to a word I don?t know, I push through and I eventually understand what I read.

How long do you read?

I read approximately 4 hours per day. Two hours in the evening, at least hour or more at school, and then almost an hour before school.

What do you do to practice?

What does it take to be an amazing gymnast?

Maya: A lot of hard work in the gym. It takes passion.

Carmela: Even during the times when we don?t want to practice or we are stressed, we continue. We just need to keep working because the more work we put into gymnastics the more we accomplish. The more we accomplish the closer we get to reaching our dreams.

Even though I know I love a specific book, if I choose a new book, I know I will become a better reader through that experience.

How do you use a growth mindset ?

What ever book I try to read, I don?t give up. I have confidence I can do it.

Karen: 20 minutes a day.

Karen: Go over all the songs.

How do you use a growth mindset or perseverance?

Karen: I never give up if a song is difficult to learn.

Mal ayka (Grade 5) Tal ent : Programmer What does it take to be an amazing programmer?

Malayka: It is something that I really wanted to learn. I didn't rely on the teacher, but I taught myself.

How long do you practice?

Tal ent : Goal ie

Malayka: It depends on the project, but I usually take at least 20 minutes or more to write code.

What does it take to be an amazing goalie?

How do you use a growth mindset or perseverance?

Matias: I practice specific goalie skills like diving, kicking, punching, and blocking penalty kicks.

How long do you practice?

Malayka: I made a remote control car. It took a lot of knowledge of electronics, coding, and design. There were a lot of times where things went wrong or I needed to make changes. It was a step by step process. Other classmates didn't take it a seriously, but I really wanted to do it. I was more focused than the others.

Matias: A practice with my family at home and with my goalie coach from Catolica Soccer School.

What do you do to practice?

Matias: My family members shoot the soccer ball and I stop it. The goalie can be the hero of the game, but you have to practice.

How do you use a growth mindset or perseverance?

Matias: Even when the team scores a goal against me, I still try to save the next one.

Borja Talent: Maker What does it take to be an amazing maker?

Borja: To be courageous and creative. If someone says "That impossible, you can't make that," you must keep going.

Ol ivia Neuhauser (Grade 2) Tal ent : Skiing I agree with the talented Nido students I interviewed. For instance, when I ski on the weekends I put a lot of effort into my lessons. I persevere by getting up after I fall and I keep trying. I practice every weekend, the entire day. I listen to my coach. For example, when she tells me to ski backwards or turn sharper I do it. I believe in myself, and I have confidence. I encourage you all to go out there and persevere, practice and believe in yourself with your interests!!!!!!

How long do you practice?

Borja: It took me two months to make my heelies.

READERSWRITE HAMMEREDHEAD

What woul d you t hink if I t ol d you t hat a kid sl ammed t he head of a hammer direct l y int o my skul l ?

Everything started in Pre-K B, when Ms. Pia and Ms. Keka told us to play with Play-Doh. Ms. Pia gave out the Play-Doh, while Ms. Keka gave us tools for the Play-Doh. Harmlessly, a wooden hammer laid on the table. The hammer was used to open the can of paint. To begin,I think I made a person out of Play-Doh. Because it was my first time using Play-Doh, I was really happy. In my best kinder voice, I was jumping for joy saying, ?Yaaaay!!!!!! I made a person out of Play-Doh!!!!?

My best friend sat next to me. Albert, my second best friend, sat next to me too.

My best friend Number 1 made a Play-Doh person like mine. He picked up the hammer and pretended that a gigantic hammer was smashing that poor, little human made out of Play-Doh. After the Play-Doh person was demolished, I asked him, ?Are you making another one??

He quickly replied to me, ?Yeah, I think so? ?

Then, I destroyed my person and built a horrible, nightmare-version of Sponge Bob. I wasn?t a professional Play-Doh sculpture-maker, but I tried my best. Suddenly, my best friend got the hammer, raised it high over his head, and SMASHED me in the head!

Because it was a heavy, rock-solid hammer, I started bleeding super hard and obviously crying.

Afterwards, Ms. Keka noticed me, she ran to me, grabbed me, and rushed to the nurse. Going up the stairs, she was soaked in my blood.

Ms. Keka dashed to the nurse?s office, cried for help, and lifted me up in the nurse?s bed.

The nurse called my house. My nanny picked up the phone and was shocked with the news.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pia called my mom to tell her that I was smashed in my head with a hammer. My nanny came to Nido De Aguilas as fast as lightning. She ran to the nurse to pick me up. The nurse had left me like a mummy, my head completely wrapped in bandages. My nanny picked me up, rushed to the taxi that brought her, and they drove me to Clinica Las Condes, the local hospital.

We entered in the Emergency Room and they put me in bed. The doctor quickly put me to sleep. Because of this experience, I decided not to use hammers while I?m still a kid. Whenever I see hammer, it makes me remember this horrible experience!!

As soon as I t hem t hey said t hat t here were t wo cat s in t he box. So I went back t o t he box, opened it and inst ant l y saw t he cat s in t here. One t hat was as bl ack as soot was curl ed up in t he corner, whil e t he ot her one [ it had one eye] was eat ing some cat f ood t hat was as crunchy as cornf l akes. My mum picked up t he one-eyed cat but my eye had gl ued it sel f on t he smal l bl ack kit t en in t he corner.

Here are my Top 3 Moment s t hat my brot hers have been annoying:

#1 I remember once when my brot her, Ben Rios, changed my Net f l ix user name t o, ?I have no f riends.? my heart sank wit h sadness, and I f el t anger rushing t hrough my bl ood. I al most pul l ed out my hair!

#2 That t ime when my ot her brot her, Nico Rios, burnt my dol l who had, brown hair, bl ue eyes,and a purpl e dress int o a t housand pieces. I peered down and t here was st uf f ing al l over t he f l oor one eyebal l in one corner and t he ot her one in anot her corner.

#3 And when my brot her Ben uses my bat hroom al l t he t ime wit hout permission. I put a sign on my bat hroom door t hat said, ?Keep Out , That Means You Ben!? And he doesn't even f l ush t he t oil et when he uses my bat hroom.

Yuck!

Obviousl y t hose moment s were real l y annoying, but af t er al l t hat I st il l l ove and care f or my brot hers.

Somet imes I want t o be an onl y chil d and not have t o share t he el ect ronics wit h my sibl ings, but we al l know t hat won't happen. Besides, it woul d be real l y boring t o be al one al l t he t ime.

SPORTS SHOULDTHEYBEKNEELING?

By Ben Rios (Grade 4) As most of you recall, some National Football League (NFL) players knelt during the singing of the national anthem during the last fews weeks of games. There are many different opinions about this, but I will simplify it by sharing Donald Trump?s perspective, Colin Kaepernick?s perspective, Fox New?s perspective, and my own perspective.

Let?s start with Donald J. Trump?s perspective. He thought it was a disrespectful gesture to the anthem and the whole country. So he?s tweeting all about it. Here are some of his tweets. ~Sports fans should never condone players that do not stand proud for their National Anthem or their Country. NFL should change policy! ~Great solidarity for our National Anthem and for our Country. Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable. Bad ratings! ~Many people booed the players who kneeled yesterday (which was a small percentage of total).

These are fans who demand respect for our Flag!

Colin Kaepernick?s perspective says it all in this quote. He explained his position saying, ?I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and police getting paid leave and getting away with murder.?

Now for Fox News' perspective. Lots of the news on Fox News has been about the kneeling. Most reporters on Fox have not agreed with the kneeling even though a handful do think that they had the right to protest. Fox News dedicated a portion of its airtime yesterday to complain about a team of eight-year-old children who decided to take a knee during the national anthem before their elementary school football game.

My opinion on kneeling is that Fox News shouldn?t have criticized the eight year old team because the eight year olds look up to football players and they probably don?t even know what it means. For Trump, I don?t think that he should say that football players should be fired because freedom of speech exists so he can?t make the coaches fire football players. Also, if Trump can?t handle a Twitter account he can?t handle a whole country. I agree with Colin Kaepernick because how the country treats some black people is awful. Colin knelt for equality towards Black people and minorities. What do you think about this?

WORLDOFART MANDALASAREAWAYTOPEACE

By Ayumi Kinoshita (Grade 2) When I?m working on a mandala, I feel peaceful. I think about different, beautiful colors. My first time I colored a mandala is when I wonder about peace.

According to Steven Vrancken an artist from Belgium, by simply coloring mandalas, you can accomplish the following: -

Relax & enhance your meditation

-

Balance your body, your mind, and your spirit

-

Make a spiritual connection

-

Expand your creativity

-

Increase your self-awareness

-

Encourage your self-expression

-

Just have fun, alone or with your friends

To start on your way to peace, you can choose a mandala.

Choose some colors so you could color in your mandala. I choose colors that are light like light blue, light green, and I also use orange. Then, imagine how you want to color. While you are imagining how to color it might need more colors. Also, if you don?t think well you could forget how you want to color. Later, you can start coloring from the middle. You could color in different ways. You color more and MORE and MORE!When you are finished you can color the background too. If you want to,you could cut out the mandala and you could give it to someone .If you did not cut the mandala you could draw some stars or shapes or dots around it before you give it to someone.
