WORL D OF A RT Growing up What About Believing?

By: Mason Pooley

By: Victoria Rios (Grade 3) Growing up, sometimes fun sometimes not. What about believing in ourselves? What about it all?

On the farm riding horses, we go slow and then we trot. Feeding pigs, picking figs.

Just because we grow up,

Going to bed in the barn in red.

Just because we grow tall.

Waking up, petting the pup, and this the way I grew up.

What about believing? All that we are leaving? What about all the adventures, We wanted to come true? What about all the dreams, We hoped that would come true?

Growing up, living in the city, is very busy. I watch the cars wizz by, the noise so loud I feel like I can fly! The air so hot, I feel like a boiling pot. No rain, I take the train. I visit colorado and boy I was so high up, and this is the way I grew up.

What about everything? What about the world? I guess it all changes, When we grow Big and old

Waking up to the sound of the waves, I?m in a very calm and happy faze. Walking on the beach, I find a peso but I can?t quite reach. I found a montaray, I?m having a pretty lucky day. I go swimming in the water, then I see my father. My father says, ?Hi little chump? and this is the way I grew up.

Wil l ow?s St ory- A Cat Forgot t en By Emilia (Grade 3) Mother goes to catch some prey, She goes, very, very, far away,

I was very enraged,

Across the stream and through the trees,

?Cause today, I was going further away still,

I hope that foxes let me be,

From the mother I loved with all my will,

WORL D OF A RT

Then we stopped, at their little house, I wait and wait

That I live in right now,

Through the night and through the day,

They call me Willow,

But mother still does not come back,

I live with 2 other cats,

So I wait and wait some more,

and they?re starting to like me,at very last,

I climb inside a dusty car,

Their names are Pepper, and Cinnamon to,

And warm up on the engine floor, In the morning I feel scared,

they?re family to me,and my grievings have gone through,

So I start to meow,

I love them, and I think they love me too,

?Mother, mother, please come back!? Then hands reach in and grab my back,

So does a girl, You might ask who,

And my heart began to race,

Her names Emilia,

The bring me out and the sun lit my face,

And she loves me, too.

I threw out my claws and they caught lace, The human screamed from all the pain, Out he didn?t let me go for all my disdain, They left me in a dark, dark room, They had food, toys, and what they called broom, In the day I ate and played, I would forget all my disdain, But in the night I would just weep and cry, I yowled my grief up towards the sky, My mom of course, I missed her touch, I loved her so,so,so, much, But now she was gone I knew that for sure, But I could still remember her soft, soft purr, And the touch of her messy fur, One day some people, put me in a dark cage and drove me away in a car, 2

DI D YOU K NOW The Birt h of t he Tel ephone and How it Grew Up

My Advent ure t o London, Engl and

By Agustin Rojas (Grade 2) Back at the year 1876 Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in Illinois in Highland Park he was inspired by his class of deaf people in the past telephones were connected by wires. And now telephones call with radio transmission telephones started in homes after 1950s and original iphones were attached to walls and couldn't move. Mobile phones were used in1990s now we still use mobile phones. Don't you wonder what will we use in 10 years? I think we are going to use holograms to call, what do you think? And getting back on track they were public telephones too when you couldn?t bring your phone and you needed to call someone you needed to use street phones(or public phones). Now to the smartphones we use today. They are amazing they are little and easy to move. The telephones that we now use were first used in 2002. Telephones could just call now we can do crazy thing with apps and photos in 2002 they use 3G or even 2G now we use 4G in a couple of years we will use 5G. Did you know that humans have be use telephones for 143 YEARS!!! The Telephone has grown up so much it is an amazing tool for all of us! Free phones for everybody! Just kidding! Question: What is your favorite type of phone through the 143 years?

By Francisca (Grade 3) I recently came back from a magical adventure to London. Here our my Top 3 places kids should visit when traveling to London on vacation : 1.Go to M & M Store! You can design M&M's with your face on . They have millions of colors and flavors to try. Any chocoloate lover will enjoy this store. 2. And if you don't like chocolate you can go to the Legoland Store. Walls are made out or pure legos. That is certainly amazing and there is over thousands Lego boxes and kits to choose from. 3.If you're a fanatic of toys you should go to Hamley's Toy Store. It is huge!!

Fun Fact-the first telephone was formed like an ear.

H O W -T O How to Grow Up With Success By Jeremy Liu (Grade 4) Have you ever thought about how to grow up with success? Well, I also thought about it. After researching, reading, and thinking, I have described four tips to grow up to be a successful adult.

1. Be a Team Pl ayer. Sometimes, only participating in teams can be difficult, but many problems can?t be solved by only one person. When you?re on team, be a team player, let everybody work, not only one or two people doing it. That?s why we need cooperation to solve problems. Then, show responsibility to your ?team?. Be friends with your ?team?.

T.E.A.M. = Together Everyone Achieves More

2. Sel f -Rel iance Some things must be done by yourself. No one can help you in these things. It is very important to learn to do things by yourself. The sooner you learn about this, the greater your confidence will be in the future. Think about things you can do by yourself, such as tying your shoes, dressing yourself, putting your toys in your own position or cleaning yourself. Continue to find more to do on your own and don?t be afraid to try more and more on your as you get older.

3. Quiet At t it ude t o Fail ures. There is a fact that everyone fails. But, some people shout or yell when they fail. DON?T DO THAT!!! When you fail, choose to be quiet. Think about how you failed, and also think how to not fail next time if you can do it again. In that way, you will be more successful and you can improve yourself, too!

4. Command of Foreign Languages. As the saying goes, ?the more language you know, the more people you are worth?, knowing more language is better for you. A command of knowing at least three language( language, ?first foreign language and second foreign language?) is a very good key to success. I think that the students at Nido will be better at this point. First it is a international school so that every student has their own native language, and then you need to learn English (to talk, study, learn, play, etc.) at school. Also because our school is in Chile almost everybody knows Spanish. So almost everybody knows 2~3 languages. Finally, KNOWING MORE LANGUAGE IS GOOD!!! Try to learn 3 languages!

SPOTLI GHT Growing up wit h Video Games By Samir (Grade 3) I think video games are awesome and I have reasons why, but it all started one day when I was playing video games with my sister. My dad shouted, ?Guys stop playing video games go outside?. I went outside, but I was left curious. How bad can video games really be?

Scientists say that video games benefit the following, ?Improves coordination, Improves problem solving skills, Enhances memory, Improves attention and concentration, It?s a great source of learning, Improves the brain?s speed, Enhances multitasking skills and also Improves social skills.

1.2 billion people are playing games, of those, about 700 million play online games. That proves more people play video games than board games or physical games. There are some reasons why video games are bad for you and reasons. They?re lots of violent games that influence you to be more aggressive.

As you can see video games are a controversial issue while growing up and that?s why I wanted to write about it in the Talon.

I play video games, read, do my chores, oh and I fly !

I recommend, next time you see your parents you talk with them about this topic and set limits or make plans about your use of video games.

Growing Up By Emilia Graether (Grade 3) Most of us kids in elementary are 30 years younger than our teachers. Most of them grew up in the 80?s and the 90?s.But I wonder what happened when our teachers were kids, and they were 30 years younger than their teachers,so I decided to interview the teachers Ms.Elizabeth, Ms.Rossie, and Mr.Travis about their childhood and about them growing up.

Quest ion: What was a memorabl e mil est one when growing Ms. El izabet h When I taught myself how to ride a bike in one hour while my mom was talking on the phone with my aunt. It really surprised my mom that I learned so fast, and taught myself. Ms. Rossie When I graduated high school, I was 17 years old, I had to leave to go to university in the united states all by myself and it was super hard because I had to leave my house, my friends, my family, my country, and I was very scared and excited all at once. Mr. Travis When I learned how to ride a bike!

Question: What was the most embarrassing part of Ms. El izabet h When I got a haircut that was so short that no one recognized me anymore, and they would call me a boy and I was embarrassed because one day I opened a door for an older man, and he said, ?Thankyou, son.? Ms. Rossie When I was turning 9, I was wearing this beautiful white dress, and I was out at the table with my friends, and a bird came and pooped on me and I only noticed when my friends started laughing at me. Mr. Travis Going through a McDonald?s drive through with two goats eating hay in the back of our truck.

Question: What was your favorite stage in growing up? Ms. El izabet h 4th and 5th grade, because that was when I started loving soccer, and I realized that I was going to be an athlete. I enjoyed moving, running, playing the game with friends, and being competitive.

Ms. Rossie Elementary school, because I lived really close with my cousins, we all went to the same school. and school was really fun. I was on the dance team, swim team, and I had friends from many places in the world.

Mr. Travis Late elementary school (3-5 grade) because I had a little more independence and I remember riding my bicycle all over town with my friends, playing games, and exploring the world with more freedom. 6

What was your f avorit e st age in growing up? Miss El izabet h: 4th and 5th grade, because that was when I started loving soccer, and I realized that I was going to be an athlete. I enjoyed moving, running, playing the game with friends, and being competitive. Miss Rossie: Elementary school, because I lived really close with my cousins, we all went to the same school. and school was really fun. I was on the dance team, swim team, and I had friends from many places in the world.

Mr. Travis: Late elementary school (3-5 grade) because I had a little more independence and I remember riding my bicycle all over town with my friends, playing games, and exploring the world with more freedom. What 's bet t er, being a kid or being an adul t ? Miss El izabet h: Being a kid is very exciting because kids are filled with a sense of wonder, curiosity, and creativity which I hope kids can keep as they grow older. And as a teacher, I?m an adult but I still get to be ?kid like?in the classroom with my students, so I get to be both at times.

Miss Rossie: Being a kid is better because it is so much fun! I had less responsibility. I had more time to do the things I truly loved when I was a kid. Mr. Travis: I like being an adult better because I have more freedom to choose what I want to learn and the adventures I can choose to go on, but I wish I would have focused more on being a kid when I was a kid. I spent too much time worrying about trying to become an adult. What advice woul d you give t o kids t hat are growing up? Miss El izabet h: My advice comes from a quote from the book Wonder. It says, ?Show more kindness than is necessary.? Being kind to others is such an important life skill and it will help to make our world a better place if we are more kind than necessary to each other. Miss Rossie: Slow down and enjoy being a kid. It is so much fun being a kid. Don?t be afraid to be who you are. Embrace your uniqueness and don?t worry about what others may think about you. Just be you. Mr. Travis: Try as many different things as you can including music, arts, outdoor activities, sports and so on. This will give you many skills and it will help you choose what you eventually want to do when you grow up.

Growing Up at Nido By Samiya (Grade 3) We are all student here in Nido de Aguilas , but some of us started school here from pre-k. Now some of those kids are grown and are in grades like ( 7 grade ) ( 8 grade) ( 9 grade). I sent an email to some of those student who grew up at Nido with some questions about how they grew up at Nido de Aguilas. Let's find out what they had to say.

Quest ion: What was t he most dif f icul t grade you were in? And why? Del: The most difficult grade was definitely seventh grade. It is the hardest grade because it is the year in which teachers stop reminding you of tasks. In seventh grade your learning starts being your responsibility so you have to stay focused on school. Nicole: 7th grade because it was too strict! Nico: 7th grade because it was a huge change from 6th grade to 7th.

Student recently concluded their work on the Alumni Project. Students researched the school's history and spent over 7 hours interviewing Nido alumni (adults who used to attend Nido). The goal of the Alumni Project was to help the Nido Alumni Association (NAA) meet its goals and get Nido alumni involved with the NAA's work. The result of the Alumni project can be found on the following pages. These pieces will be turned into a two meter by eight centimeter installation that the NAA will use to encourage alumni to get involved. The students also made a video that will be shared with Nido alumni from all over the world. Check out the next issue of Talon TV to watch that video.

IM A G IN A T IO N C R E A T IO N A Thoughtful Dragon By: Olivia Neuhauser (Grade 3) ?I?m Diane Bailey. I have a family of six people: Me, (Diane), my brother, Jake, my sister, Violet, my mom, Jessie, and my dad, James. We are the Bailey family. I don?t have many friends. No one WANTS to be my friend. It?s like they think I?m contagious. Like I?m poisonous. I?m not, if that?s what you were thinking. I want to get new friends, but no one else does. Or at least, as I already told you, they don?t want ME to be their new friend. I don?t know why.?I wrote in my notebook. ?My only friend is Grace. She doesn?t care what other people think about me. She cares about me.?I continued to write. ?All my siblings make fun of me because I only have one friend.?I stop writing. I heard the stairs creaking. ?It must be morning!? I think. I turn off my night lamp and pretend I?m asleep. My mom loudly walks into my bedroom and calmly says out loud to me: ?Wakie, Wakie! School time! Let?s go! Hop, Hop!? I pretend to yawn and I get up from bed. I yank on my clothes and walk down for breakfast. I eat a piece of toast with strawberry jam. I brush my teeth and my hair. My mom calls me to the car, so I pull on my jacket and my backpack, and I hurry to the car. ?Mom, can?t school start LATER??I groan. ?No, sweetie. I?m sorry. You?ll have to deal with it.? She responds with pleasure. gazed at her. No! It can?t be! She is still, not moving at all, as if she was paralyzed. But I knew that that was not the case. I was shocked. She was dead. Next to the dragons there is a pack of what looked like robbers. Then I noticed. They were trying to steal the baby. Then I poked out of the trees. I?d had enough. I know what it feels like to be bullied, but this was too much. ?STOP!? I screamed. The robbers freeze. They turn around. ?IF YOU WANT TO STEAL THAT BABY, YOU?LL HAVE TO GO THROUGH ME!? They started to walk toward me. ?OK.? they said. ?You want a fight? You?ll get one.?

17

They start to kick and punch me. After they finally ran away, I was bruised and bleeding. I breathed for a while, and then I carefully walked toward the baby. I took a extra blanket out of my backpack, I always have one in case of an emergency, like this one. I wrapped him in it. I stuffed him into my backpack, and I entered my house through the back door. The house was silent. I sprinted up the marble staircase and walked into my bedroom. I took out the baby dragon. He was bleeding, and had ropes attached to his legs. I got my spare knife and told him: ?This won?t hurt at all,? Responding to his scared look. I sliced the ropes and grabbed some medical tape. ?There we go,? I said as I wrapped up his injuries. READ ERS W RI T E Growing Up- Alexander Hamilton by Mason P (grade 3) Alexander Hamilton did not have a very happy beginning of life. Alexander was born January, 11th, 1757 in the British West Indies. Unlike most founding fathers of America, he was born into a poor and non famous family. Later Alexander's dad had to leave the Hamilton family and never saw the rest of the Hamilton family again. More tragedy struck the young Alexander Hamilton when his mom died of a fever when Alexander was only 11 years old! Alexander left to his older cousin, and after a year his cousin commited suicide. With no money and very little family the Hamilton brothers were left orphans. On October of 1772, Alexander decided to leave St. Croix and try to make a new home in New York. Alexander never considered going back to St. Croix. Later Alexander got into King's college and started school for the first time in his life. When Alexander heard the news of the Lexington battle during the revolution against England, he began to prepare for war. Alexander felt like he had to do something to help the king?s college men get prepared for war alongside him. So Alexander decided to make his own musket drill so the King?s college men could We practice shooting muskets and fighting. All the practice payed off have reached the when Alexander and his troops saw their first military action on the night of August 23, 1775, when he and his troops helped 23rd issue!!! capture 21 cannons at a british stockade on the tip of Manhattan Island. By March of 1776, Alexander was honored by earning the rank of captain by the age of 19. From the day Alexander was born he was already having difficulties and as Alexander grew he had even more. Having to be an orphan, not going to school for a long time, and going to war a lot, that is a pretty tragic childhood and after that he became one of the most important founding fathers of America. At the age of 21 Alexander was already going to war and was an orphan at the age of 11! Alexander inspired me and he should inspire you to, to become a better person.
