THEOTHERENGLISHSIDE

by Alex Arthur (Grade 3)

D DI

So, about England. Imagine it. Visualize the country of England. The sights, the sounds, the feel of England. Imagine it. What comes to mind? Wet streets, grey skies, strict rules, an unpleasant feeling? FALSE!!! The real deal includes mouth watering roast beef, world renowned museums, impressive castles, and much, much, more. It was the first and only place I got HEATSTROKE!! There are lovely hiking opportunities, easy transportation links to other European cities, and kind, friendly people!

THEMESSIESTPROBLEMATNIDO by Naomi Templeman (Grade 2) The Nido elementary school lost and found is like a battlefield. Thrown jackets, missing pants, old smelly lunch bags, and forgotten water bottles. It looks like a beast lives in the lost and found cart and has tangled, ravaged, and ripped everything to pieces. The cart and closet have no more room to fit anything else. It is over-flowing! I?m sure we all have stories connected to the deadly lost and found. For instance, I lost my hat on the K-2 playground and some kind person found my hat, and luckily did not bring it to the lost and found. Instead, they hung my hat on a wall hook near the recess area. I had been searching through the piles of clothes in the lost and found with no luck.

YOU

The English government and military may have made some wrong decisions in the past, but that was the past. Anyways, I?m hungry. Let?s skip straight into the foody bit. England has lovely curries and fish & chips. Also there are Kippers ( smoked herring ) and English Breakfasts ( bacon, sausages, fried eggs, potatoes, tomato and mushroom). London, the capital city, has the biggest metro or tube in the world. In Bayswater, one of the parts of the enormous city, my family lived in a hotel near sushi, pizza, asian restaurants, burger joints, and Greek restaurants.

buy the tickets, and visit london!!!! Although it is far, it is totally worth it, and you will remember the trip for ever. GOODBYE!!

If you?re in the mood for historical sites or museums, well you?re in luck. There is Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament, Brighton Pier, and Bovington, The Imperial War Museum. Brighton, an amazingly sunny beach, is only 50 minutes by overground train from London. Amazing ice creams, views from the pier, and a fun amusement park are also included. Also if you like art the Tate Modern is now displaying eye-popping art.

Our lost and found system is a big pile of clothes, and the problem must be solved. Mr. Chad and I came up with a few ideas, but we need your help. So, we decided to create The Nido Elementary School Lost and Found Solution Contest! You have three weeks to design your own solution and enter the contest. Send us your written solutions, drawings, or even voice recording solutions. The official contest email address is: thetalon@nido.cl. Winners will be recognized and celebrated in The Talon issue # 8.

Deadl ine: JUNE 18t h, 2015.

The British invented sport. Literally! British inventions include baseball, cricket, soccer, and tennis. Britain innovated tech items like the TV, the telephone, the jet engine, the train, the submarine, frozen food, and the light bulb. So I highly suggest you to go to england. Beg your parents, 1

SIBLINGS:GOOD... BAD... By Delfin Cartwright (grade 3)

D DI

"My older siblings are mean, annoying, and they make me angry!" Have you ever had that thought? But, what if they were never born? What if your older brother ran away one day? What if your older sister were kidnapped, or died suddenly? The hole that they would leave would be gigantically humongous! You would be heartbroken. For instance, when in the movie Frozen Elsa ran away, and Ana was totally devastated. She did everything she could to get her sister back. But really there is something everyone must realize and appreciate about our incredible older siblings!

would be bossy with other children, your feelings would not be as strong, and maybe even your grades would be worse. They are helpful, they recognize problems, and they help you practice the being respectful responsible and kind. So when you are mad at your older or brother or sister, just calm down and remember that they can be very helpful and kind. Yet, they are sometimes mean, annoying, and make you angry, nobody is perfect.

Our ol der sibl ings are who we are.

YOU

To begin with, older siblings often cooperate with you in certain ways. They help make your feelings stronger, and help us with our homework if you ask politely. Also, they comfort you so you do not get mad so easily when you?re in a situation where you need help calming down or they at least try to help you.

Finally, your older siblings help you to practice the Three Be's: being respectful ,responsible, and kind. You might be thinking how? Well, they help you to remember to say please and thank you. Your older siblings also help you by being good models for us. They help you to learn how to share. For instance, my brother Takoa and I always share pencils and erasers while doing homework. In conclusion, you should realize and appreciate your older siblings. You would not be who you are now, you

OW KN

Secondly, your older siblings help you to realize how to make problems smaller, instead of bigger. For example, teaching you how to smile about problems and understand you don?t need to be fighting about that very small problem. They also demonstrate how to just walk away and discuss the problem when we have calmed down and when we are not so mad. Your siblings can teach you how not to bring up the past, and forget problems that don?t need to continue.

parachuting accident. His doctor said ?he was a whisker from being paralyzed for life.? In the year 2000 he married Shara Canning. He also works together with the company Gerber to make great survival tools, knives, hatchets and clothes and backpacks.

BEARGRYLLS By Liam Purcell (4C) and Evan Dallimore(4C)

I jump out the door of the helicopter. I see the ground below. My heart rate nearly triples. I pull the cord to the parachute. It comes flying out. I suddenly realize with horror that there is a hole in the parachute! I only have a few seconds. I pull the release button and the broken parachute comes flying off. I pull the reserve cord. The parachute jumps out. I survived yet another near death experience.

PORTUGUESEALLOVERTHEWORLD By Melissa Alegretti (4E until June) Did you know that there are people who speak Portuguese on 4 different continents? With about 250 million native speakers, Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world! Definitely, I will tell you about these parts of the planet that share the Portuguese language. Here they are:

YOU

This is the life of Bear Grylls- British Survivalist. Bear Grylls goes to remote areas in the world and teaches you how to survive in many different scenarios. He risks his life every day. Bear grylls is a british survivalist. He specializes in survival techniques. He is widely known for his television series Man vs. Wild. He also takes part in other television series like Worst case scenario, Mission survival, Running wild, etc? He is not only a TV star, but has also written 15 survival books. Bear also takes some celebrities out on a two day adventure with only a knife and a backpack.

Bear Grylls risks his life every day and survives, so that people can survive if disaster strikes.

Brazil: This is the country where all my family is from. It is the largest of South America. 4 in every 5 Portuguese speakers in the world are in Brazil. This is the flag:

OW KN

His Man vs wild has become one of the most viewed TV shows in the world. For someone as tough as he is, he still has his surprising ?weaknesses.? Bear Grylls is afraid of brussel sprouts. He said that he would rather eat camel guts (he?s done that) than eat a brussel sprout. Bear also has led record breaking expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica. He has even summited mount Everest. At the time, he was the youngest Brit to ever to climb the tallest mountain in the world.

Portugal: It is not what you are thinking! There's only 1 Portugal in the world! It is the place that settled in all these countries below, and where the Portuguese language was born! It is in Europe right next to Spain, in the Iberian Peninsula. Here is the flag:

His childhood was spent at some of England?s top schools. Bear was educated in Eaton house, Ludgrove school and Eton College. His studies wasn?t the only thing he focused on in school. As a teenager he learned to skydive and got a black belt in Shotokan karate. After leaving school he joined the British special forces for three years. In 1996 he suffered a terrible freefall

Mozambique: One of the many countries in Africa that speak Portuguese. It is located along the Tropic of Capricorn, just like the south of Brazil. Angola: It is in Africa, in the south, just like Mozambique. It is the largest Portuguese speaking country after Brazil. Cape Verde: You can see that Verde is in Portuguese (verde is also in Spanish with the same meaning)! It is a small archipelago, right next to the African coast, close to Mauritania & Senegal. 3

PORTUGUESEALLOVERTHEWORLD Continued... Guinea-Bissau: It's in Africa bordering Guinea and Senegal.

D DI

São Tomé e Príncipe: As you can see, the name is TOTALLY in Portuguese! It is also another archipelago in Africa next to Equatorial Guinea & Gabon. East -Timor: The smallest of the former Portuguese colonies, located in Asia very next to Indonesia and Australia! Here is the flag:

YOU

Macau: It's in China. Let me tell you. Many, many years ago, in the city of Macau, Portugal settled in a place in Asia! In 1999, China got it back and, through the years, the people who lived there reverted to speak Chinese. Nowadays, almost no one speaks Portuguese there! But some kept the tradition. YOU SHOULD CERTAINLY KNOW THE FLAG OF CHINA! But, if you don't know, take a look:

places. First, you could experience the sights and sounds of the country?s capital city, Buenos Aires. It?s a fun city to visit with delicious meats, which is the typical food in Argentina. You have gizzards, sausages, and other very enjoyable pieces of the beef cow.I suggest a place called Cabaña Las Lilas. Also,in Buenos Aires there is a famous monument called the obelisk. The obelisk is a thin tall white tower which is not only in The famous obelisk of BA Argentina, it is in other countries, too. In this city, you need to be aware of the strikes. That?s when people are angry with each other, and that is very common in Buenos Aires.Sometimes, people close lots of stores and stop fun or good things, just because of the strikes! A very good solution for the city of Buenos Aires would be no more strikes, but people still disagree with each other. So remember,?No te pierdas Buenos Aires?.

Goa: The state of Goa, in India, was a Portuguese colony for 400 years. Like Macau, Goa was later reunited with its mainland. Also like Macau, most of the people reverted back to the local language, but some still speak Portuguese. Now that you have learned a little bit about the countries that speak Portuguese in the world, I've got a test for you! Here it is:

How many places did Portugal settled? What's the story of India & China? Well, I've got your score in the palm of my hands, 100% ! Bravo! Another thing that you really should know about these countries: just like the British and Americans, Portuguese has different accents in every place! Try speaking Portuguese, too, I encourage especially if you speak Spanish as these two languages, Portuguese and Spanish, are quite similar!

ARGENTINA! By Santiago Boccardo (Grade 3)

OW KN

Where is Portugal and the other Portuguese-language countries in the world?

Another city in Argentina you could go to is Bariloche in the south of Argentina. It is one of the best places to visit Skiing in beautiful Bariloche in the winter. It is next to the Andes mountain range. Bariloche is a very good place to go skiing. The Andes mountains that are close to Bariloche are very snowy in winter, they almost look like a beautiful young woman?s wedding dress. Just imagine how you skiers could go crazy skiing in that giant white blanket! My mom and dad went skiing to Bariloche several times.

If you haven?t booked anything yet for your upcoming June and July vacation, my suggestion is Argentina. If you want to travel to this amazing country, you will find some interesting

Finally, the last place I?m going to mention is Salta in the very north. This area in Argentina is a good place for summer and winter. In Salta, Argentina winter, there?s also snow, like in Bariloche, but in summer, there are lots of nice lakes and mountains you can climb. In the summer, Salta is much prettier than Bariloche. So remember, Buenos Aires and Salta are always fun and exciting, but Bariloche is only in winter. So go now, and have a great winter! 4

APPRECIATION

For the month of May, Nido has been focusing on the theme of Appreciation. The elementary counselors have been working with classroom teachers to support student learning of the importance of being appreciative in their daily lives. One way that some students showed their appreciation was by writing letters of appreciation to adults in their lives. Some of those letters can be found below, while others can be found under 'Nido Writers' section of thetalon.nido.cl

Dear Ms. Carolina, Thank you for being such a nice teacher and helping me learn so many art skills and techniques. I appreciate a lot your patience toward me and the class when we are not listening or being respectful. I know you spend your time saying think over and over again and you get frustrated. But look at us, Imagine what we would do without you! We wouldn?t know anything, how to weave, how to do portraits, how to do masks and Aztec pottery. I would also also like to thank you because you always let me come in recess although it is your free time, and you help me with my work. I?m sure every single teacher appreciates the way you are respectful towards their quiet time and try the class to do so. But thats not all, I would also like to thank you for making our class fun instead of putting quiet music and telling us to work silently.

Laura 5B

Sincerely,

YOU

Warm regards,

Dear Ms Nicole, I really appreciate how nice and patient you have been with me.You make learning fun. You have proven to me that people make mistakes, even teachers when they say something backwards or spell something wrong. Thanks to you every day I leave your class with a smile on my face.

Isabel

Dear Ms.Laura,

Dear Mr. Redd,

Sincerely, Ian Johnson 5B

I appreciate you for all the kindness, intelligence and fairness you taught me in fourth grade. You have been one of three teachers that showed me the great values of life. If I could turn to one moment in the past I would choose the time I entered your class for the first time. I will never forget how many chances you gave me to start over and fix my mistakes,, but you would always give me that opportunity with your heart open full of of and kindness. I know your 2013-2014 class was a headache, I honestly don?t know how you never exploded. You gave us warnings and sometimes we had to stay inside for recess but every time class started again you would be the same, nice, funny, awesome and fair teacher we all love. So I just wanted you to know how grateful I am for everything you could possibly teach me during the year I was with you as your apprentice, I really am a lucky student. Please continue being the same person for the rest of your life.

OW KN

I just want to thank you for being an awesome and funny teacher. You make learning like we are still at recess. The pranks on people are funny and always seem to make everybody?s spirit go to it's maximum potential. In math you made it fun and went step by step in every lesson to make sure everybody understands. Even though my friends and I made you frustrated at times, I want to thank you on how you always had a positive attitude. You also gave people chances to get it right. I had always admired how you teach. You teach with enthusiasm and a feeling like teaching is your favorite thing to do. I also want to Thank You on my indoor recess fun. You would let us play any game we want as long as it was silent and did not include running around. Thank you for making fourth grade (my first year at Nido) off to a good start.

Sincerely,

Ana 2013-2014 student

I sing and laugh with them As they sing across the big blue sky They say ?Make a wish and it will come true? They sign until the sun comes out. They shine until the moon is full. They bring me lovely dreams I dream that I fly and sing with the stars They bring me to the moon and I say ?Can I come back and stay?? She answers with a flash that illuminates the whole sky I wake up and open the window

Tree branches swing with the wind.

Roses feel soft, smooth and smell like watermelon. The leaves on little trees poke my fingers. The bees are bouncing from rose to rose. The sun is shimmering like a diamond.

I hear birds tweeting like the beautiful flowers. I smell fresh grass getting cut.

I hear crunching leaves when people walk by. Nature is the best!

NATURE SENSE POEM By Naomi Bone

I see mountains in the distance, birds gliding up in the sky through the big green trees and bees flying through the flowers.

I hear birds chirping, leaves crunching and bees buzzing all around me.

I touch soft grass with my hand and soft vanilla roses.

I?ll never forget the splendid nature outside

I smell sunny yellow roses and wet grass. Nature is as beautiful as the moon and the sun together. 9

MYINTERVIEWWITHALEXGUNN By Ariana (3rd grade) Alex Gunn is famous at Nido. She plays basketball every day. After her last class finishes in the afternoons, she runs to the GYM in excitement. I met her one afternoon as she stormed into the gym. She was very kind to answer some of my questions, and her love for life and basketball were easy to see. Alex has a very big passion for basketball. I wanted to interview her because she made history here at Nido!!! Yes, she is the first student in the history of our school to win all four SAAC tournaments!!! From her freshman year to her senior year she has brought home the SAAC cup. Amazing!

Who has been t he biggest inf l uence on your l if e or your basket bal l career? My friends, family, and coaches. They are always there to support me in stressful situations, and they?ve helped me balance school and sports. Tel l s us somet hing t hat st udent s and t eachers here at Nido el ement ary may not know about about you? Teachers may not know that I?m a black belt in taekwondo. What universit y wil l you at t end next year and why? I will attend UC San Diego. I chose the university because they have a great international studies program. UC San Diego is a lot like Nido with its internationalism.

s t r o Sp

Alex?s coach, Garrett Crosbie said, ?She is Miss Basketball. When we need a basket at a crucial moment in the game, we get the ball into Alex?s hands. She can play any position on the court, we trust her, and she really understands basketball. When she has had ups and downs in her life, she says she turns to basketball for a positive influence in her life.? What do you want t o be when you grow up?

I not sure yet, but I am very confident that I don?t want to work in an office. I want to serve people, help people, possibly in UNICEF. What was t he worst punishment you f aced so f ar growing up? I haven?t had many punishments, but I wasn?t allowed to play basketball yesterday because my parents said I needed to study for IB exams. It was probably good for me in the long run.

What was t he key in winning f our championships? Our team bonded really well. We were strongest together. We were all friends off the court and that really helped in winning championships. What was your most memorabl e moment in basket bal l ? The moment we won the last championship and we were huddled together, cheering, staring at each other all knowing that we did it and all the hard work had paid off. She inspired me with what she said. When I interviewed her she made me realise what I can do with life. She also made me love basketball in a way that I never knew of. I liked interviewing Alex because she is very nice to everyone around her.

THELONGWAITEDGLORYOFFUTBOL by Dan Jaime and Takoa Cart wright The pressure is on, as these twelve countries are going to battle to be the pride of South America, in a competitive tournament that has been watched by millions from all over the world.

country with the most victories is not our neighboring country of Argentina but Uruguay, who have been the best team in the Americas one more time that Argentina, with fifteen victories in the finals. Chile has never won a title and even though we have hosted the tournament six times, this being the seventh. Weirdly, since it started, this tournament is hosted sometimes every six months, or one year, or two, or three, or four, or six, or eight years but never five! In 1959 the tournament was played twice. The first in Argentina, where Argentina won, and the second in Ecuador where Uruguay won. From 1916 Copa America was played again in the year of 1917 in Uruguay, the home country won the cup. In 1917 there was a two years gap between the Copa America. From 1929 until 1935, there was a six year break in the Copa America. After the 1949 Copa America, the next tournament was held four years away, in 1953 where, surprisingly, the Paraguayan team hoisted the cup. When the tournament was held three years apart, it it was from 2001 fromm 2004. The longest break in tournament history was when from the 1967 tournament held in Uruguay, there was no Copa America for 8 years, until Peru won it 1975, where the tournament was held in no specific place.

Chile, MĂŠxico, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Jamaica, Brasil, Colombia, PerĂş, and Venezuela will confront each other this summer in the Copa America. The South American soccer tournament will bring the long waited joy of ?futbol?back into Chile. Like the World Cup, this tournament is highly watched and enjoyed by the all soccer fans. This winter on the 11th of June at 20:30, Chile will play in the first game of the Copa America, which takes place in the National Stadium. All of Chile will be watching as the team gets set to play against Ecuador on a very special evening. This soccer tournament is the oldest continental tournament, as we are in the 44th edition. This tournament has been played since 1916 and last years champion was Uruguay.

All right, let?s get started with a little background on the Copa America. This tournament like we said before, is in its 44th year and was first played in the year of 1916 in the country of Uruguay. The

Before we go into the groups stage you have to understand how the tournament works. Since they?re three groups the top two teams out of each bracket will advance. In total, eight teams will pass on to the next round, to decide that, the two remaining teams with the best record will move on. Since the Copa America rules are very complex past this point I took a screenshot of the following Bracket. Use this magazine to fill in your own predictions. Use a sharpie and try your best on the bracket. 11

FILL IN YOUR TOURNAMENT BRACKET BELOW:

The first round, like the World Cup, will consist in a group stage. Group A has Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, and Bolivia. To summarize this group, Chile is moving on. Ecuador has done well recently, but lately Mexico and Bolivia have had a weaker team. Group B has real competition as Uruguay and the World Cup finalist clash heads right away. The teams in this group are Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, and Jamaica. Probably Argentina and Uruguay are going to advance, clearly being the strongest teams in this group. In group C, Brazil, Colombia, our neighboring country Peru, and Venezuela will fight to move on, this will be an extremely hard battle for Peru and Venezuela, as Brazil is the most favored to win the Copa America and Colombia has amazingly talented players like James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao.

This tournament, like any other, past the group stage is unpredictable, but as we have said in multiple pieces and, and in one of the first sports articles we ever wrote? VIVA CHILE!!!!!!

THESEVENWONDERSOFTHEWORLD by Sofia Ricci (5E) The Seven Wonders of the World are the most mind-blowing landmarks that I have ever seen. The Seven Wonders of the World are some of the most interesting historic landmarks to study about. The Seven Wonders of the World have changed over time, with a re-election made through a global voting process changing the modern Seven Wonders in 2000. Since the re-election from 2000, the seven wonders of the world are: Petra, ChichĂŠn ItzĂĄ, Christ the Redeemer, The Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, and the Taj Mahal. I interviewed ES students to see what their favorite Seven Wonder is, and then I put each Seven Wonder in a ranking from first stop to top of your bucket list.

Behol d: Val ecnic by Antonia Vezzoli (4D) chapter 2: The Doorless Room ?You didn't have to hurt her,?a soft voice sighed. ?And if I didn't, then it would have probably run away and gotten caught,? a gruff tone replied. ?We have already discussed that she is not an it,? the soft voice solemnly answered. ?What had happened?? my head was laid against a pillow. My hands curled around my soft cotton blanket. At first, it all felt like a dream, yet I remembered it so well. The ?wind? was swooping freely across the sunlit sky not to forget the face I saw on the tree. How silly of me. ?Why in the world would I ever think of dreaming of a tree with a face?? I thought. But the images were all too clear. I couldn?t just sit here and think about them I decided. So I slowly lifted my head up, only to lower it down again. ?Why was the roof so low?? I wondered. I lifted up my blanket, and realized it was nothing more than a very old and dirty ragged black coat. Suddenly I felt an oozing pain in my head that I hadn't noticed before. My head was wrapped in a white linen cloth. I turned around and realized what I had thought to be a pillow was a pile of dry leaves tied together with a thin strip of moist bark. The room was little and made of gray uneven stones and there was only a tiny twine rug to suit the cobblestone floor. Was I still dreaming? I pinched myself, but sure enough, I wasn't dreaming. The pain in my body was too real. This place that I was in was too real. No, this was no dream. Just then, I heard voices. They sounded familiar, but they couldn't be. I stretched my

memory back to all the voices I could remember. Then I found it. It was the voice I heard that woke me up. In fact, there were two voices, not just one. I listened to them, but through the solid walls I heard nothing but mumbles. I searched, trying to go farther, and get out of here. That is when I realized there was no door. What could I do? Where could I go? ?Be calm... be calm,?I tried to tell myself. I had to work with what I had. I looked around, but besides the bed and the mat, there was only a small, old and rusty trunk. My mind flew into a panicky tizzy, ?what in the world would fit in that shabby box, and how can I use whatever is in there to get me out of here? I have to get out of here NOW!? Then I remembered I wasn't in my old world anymore, so potentially anything could happen if I opened the trunk. ?Well, it wouldn't hurt to try,? I thought. I sighed as I glanced forward. I slowly reached out to open the chest with trembling hands. The lid was made of what must have once been wood from a great pine, but now it was damp and fit for nothing except the dump. I quickly opened it and peered inside. To my disappointment there was only a jagged stone attached to a thin slip of paper. I curiously picked it up and closely examined the card. It was written in some odd language.

It said: serwaca dercom?aba sec?olin ope wensac ploki?juwy... How could I ever understand this language? I began to worry that maybe I would never leave. My stomach lurched, ?I will leave this place... I will leave? I told myself, but my mind was thinking elsewhere. I anxiously searched the label for a hint, a sign ,a clue, anything to get me out of here. Again, I looked closely at the letters, but there were no clues. Then I had an idea. It did not seem like a great idea, or a horrible idea. It was just an ordinary idea, but it was also something else: it was a hope. A hope of returning home, hope of watching the sunrise, hope of seeing my mom again. I thought of all of these things while I flipped the paper over, but I saw nothing on the other side. At that moment a tear slipped out of my eye, and I didn't try to hold it back. 20

Divided- Part 2 by Lily Lamb and Andrea Picciotto (5A) Two hearts seemed to skip a beat at the surprise of seeing someone so unexpectedly. They were astonished. Lily wondered, ?was this a girl from the A side?? She knew that it was forbidden for a girl from the A side to meet a girl from the Z side. She also knew that she was from the A side for having 'Pink uniform for princesses.?Andrea always believed that things like this could happen, but not to her because she lived such an isolated life. After the initial shock of seeing each other wore off the girls finally spoke to each other. ?Hi? I?m Lily the main princess of the Z side.?. ?Hi, I?m Andrea the main princess from the A side.?. ?Is this allowed, you know to be talking to each other?? Lily questioned as she looked around up make sure that nobody was looking at them in astonished look. It was clear. They knew they would be in big trouble if they were caught together, so they decided that they needed to go to Lily?s parents (the King and Queen) to make sure nobody tells on them first. Right before they entered the King and Queen?s royal chamber, Andrea stopped Lily? . ?Wait, wouldn?t your parents kill me or something.? Andrea did have an excellent point: it was the law for these two sides to stay separated after all. So the 2 girls went creeping down every room until they reached the safest place possible. At

least that?s what they thought. They made the decision to hide in a mini storage room where all the old stuff from the royal family was kept. After leaving for a brief moment, Lily brought some snacks back just in case Andrea was hungry. When Lily arrived with all the snacks they started telling each other what their land was like. Andrea was first to talk about the A land.?Wow, this is what the A side is like.? They spoke for a little while about the two kingdoms, amazing each other with the specific details that made the two lands different. Then, while they were sitting on the spare bed, they saw the door knob slowly turn. ?Hide,? Andrea whispered to Lily. Lily was speechless, but in her mind she was thinking ?you should hide... you are not allowed to be seen!!!? She pushed Andrea out of the bed towards the wall so she wouldn't be seen. Lily?s nana, named Katy, came walking through and asked one question with an incredibly serious tone: ?what are you doing in here? Your break finished like 20 minutes ago.? Lily froze. Her heart raced as she tried to figure out what to do. Andrea as petrified. She thought, ?uh-oh, now I am dead. If she leaves, then I?ll be stuck here, and we?ll get caught for sure.? Lily left the room and headed back to the teaching room. Without thinking, she left Andrea behind. Unfortunately, in her rush, she forgot to think through what she was doing as she left Andrea behind with the nana. Once she realized her error, it was too late. Lily knew she couldn?t go back, so she just hoped that Andrea could create a plan to save herself. The Dragon LUKAS Zoom, zoom, zoom? ? Andrea heard the vacuum cleaner. She was shivering with fear as she was preparing herself for the moment when she would get caught by the nana.

The Red Wit ch by Anna Mahar (4E) Chapt er 3 ?Ruff ruff? barked Prince, my new dog. After an hour passed, Aunt abby called for us. ?Scarlet, Mary come inside. I have some news to tell,? Aunt Abby shouted from inside. We dashed inside with Prince chasing behind us. ?Yeah. What is it? Are you going to give scarlet 50 more dollars?? Mary asked hoping for the best that she would say yes. ?No, that won?t happen.? I remarked. ?Alright, how do I say this? well, nothing to do but say it: both of you are going in a public moral high school because I can?t homeschool you any more and you are missing out on the teen life. You need to experience things like boyfriends, friends, grades, subjects, prom and an actual future to cover up the witch side of you. Also you?re both going to different schools and they?re already in the middle of school, so I hope you can catch up on school work and friends.? Aunt Abby explained, giving the shocking news. I couldn?t take it anymore! The pit in my stomach had grown too far. ?How come? Why are we doing this? It?s just not fair. You never told me about my parents, and now your boarding us off to mortal high school. I feel like a hole is in my heart just from not knowing who my parents are or where they are!!!? I screamed, out of control. I dealt with these feelings by dashing into my room and slamming the door. Prince was whining on the other side of the door After a while, I cooled down, and started to work myself up again. ?Why did she do this to me?? I thought, feeling sad about my situation. ?Why can?t she just tell me who my parents are at least?? I screamed into my pillow. ?Sweetheart, Scarlet save your breath. I will

explain.? It was clear that my aunt felt sorry for me, so she?d finally decided to tell me what happened. ?So, your mom was an intelligent white witch and your dad was,? sigh, ?a gargoyle? in fact, he was the king gargoyle.? She continued telling my parent?s story. While she spoke it was as though time was coming to a halt. I couldn?t focus on anything except her words. Everything that I?d ever wanted to know was finally being shared with me. She continued, ?and they knew it was forbidden to be in love with a gargoyle, expressly the king. So they loved in secret.? My aunt Abby continued to blabber on. The point that really caught my attention was that I was a red witch, and the only one of my kind. Plus, there were these other important details that my aunt told me. Things like, the lord gargoyle is going to try to kill me eventually. ?Oh okay, I?m ready. I?ll go to mortal school,? I said after my aunt finished. I?d decided that the idea of going to mortal school wasn?t so bad after all. I mean, how could mortal school be worse than knowing that the Lord Gargoyle was out there, waiting to get me. We darted down stairs and went to go shopping for clothes, bags, and tons more. I guess getting ready to go to mortal school wasn?t so bad after all. ?Hopefully we have enough clothes.? Mary said when we got home. ?Trust me, you?re fine. You got half of every store in the mall and almost all of our credit cards are maxed out.? I said, surprised that she could even suggest that we somehow hadn?t got enough clothes. Chapter 4 Today was the big day, we?re starting school in the middle of the year but that was ok. We came really early to school. Don't want to make a terrible first impression, you know. ?Ok, see ya, gonna go to school now.? Mary said as we were getting dropped off. Then, suddenly, everything changed. ?I will get you and your powers. Muahahahaha!!!? yelled an unknown voice. It was weird though because the voice was distant. I looked around to see if anyone else could hear the unknown voice. To read t he rest of t his st ory, go t het al on.nido.cl , and visit t he ?Nido?s Writ er?s? page. 22

Chapter one: The sentence ?I have all the evidence I need,? the judge declared. A tall man in a green robe reached into my pocket and pulled out a bag that contained a disc and some notes. It wasn?t mine. They played the disc. It had pictures and videos of secret government files and stuff that belonged to dukes, presidents, even kings and queens. The notes had strange symbols and battle plans that just confused me. I was trembling in the chains they had put me in. Then the judge spoke again, ?Rose Taylor has been charged with treason. I sentence her to death, she will be hanged tomorrow morning. For now, lock her up deep in the dungeons. ?Sentenced to death! I thought, what did I do? Two large hands gripped my shoulders and started to drag me toward a dark tunnel. ?No!? I shouted, ?no! I?m innocent! Please, don?t kill me! I?m just twelve years old!? I looked to the judge, but he only stared back with hard cold eyes with no hints of sorrow. I sobbed and sobbed. They threw me into a cell filled with cobwebs, shut the door, turned the key, and walked away. I sat in the corner crying and crying until my entire face was wet with tears. I picked up a shard of glass that was left lying on the floor and stared at my reflection. I saw my dark brown eyes, brown hair, red lips and pale complexion staring right back. I started to feel rage, like I wanted to rip something. Without knowing what I was doing I grabbed the shard of glass and used it to cut my palm open. That only made me howl in pain. I kicked the wall and it had the same effect. Then I heard a voice, ?What?s all the racket? I will be beheaded tomorrow at 8:30 am and I want my last sleep to be a good one!? at that sentence the voice cried.

?Sorry,? I replied, ?just a little depressed, you know, not really looking forward to being hanged tomorrow,? I looked up and saw the source of the voice. It was a girl with very blonde hair and crystal blue eyes. There was a silence then the voice came again, ?Oh. Thought you were a guard. So you?re being incinerated, huh. Tough luck. What did they charge you of, treason?? I was stunned that she knew that I was charged with treason but instead of asking how she knew I nodded and asked, ?How did you get in here?? she was silent for a while, but then she said, ?Murder, they thought I had committed murder.? I gasped, ?What do you mean they thought? Did you murder someone?? ?No,? she whispered, ?I was framed, just like you. Let me tell you something. I used to live here in England with my family and friends until King Brelscott arrived. Everyone I knew snuck away to live somewhere else since Brelscott?s ruling was awful. Nobody told me where they went or how they escaped they just told me that they did. So I was stuck working as a maid at age seven. When I was eleven Brelscotts wife, Queen Petunia, was murdered and they accused me of the murder. Since the loss was very hard on the king, I was to be locked up for a year and then beheaded. So here I am, twelve and about to die. How did you get here?? I was stunned. I shook my head and came back down to earth, ?All my friends and family were driving through this sad country with me and the car crashed. I fell unconscious. When I woke I was there in the courtroom being charged with treason. I don?t remember much, I just want to get out of here.? ?Hmm,? the girl spoke again, ?So, enough mourning what?s your name?? I told her, ?Rose. What?s yours?? She answered, ?Emily.? To read t he rest of t his awesome st ory, go t o t het al on.nido.cl

PUMPKIN PIE

TRAVELING 101

O T W O H

By Rowan Vogelsang 4A

By Anna Mahar (4E)

MUNCH. MUNCH. MUNCH. That feeling when you bite into that golden crispy Dorito or that super-sour piece of super sour candy had begun. I felt it melting away too soon, so, in an effort to keep it there, I took another bite. The party they were having in my mouth had begun again, but it was like they were all tired from the first party, so not as cool. As the party was beginning to be a kind of neutral party with just enough energy drink to keep all the excitement level. Thats okay. At least they werent all asleep. Now, spoiler alert, these are not people, but tastebuds. My tastebuds. This party begun when I took a bite of the first pumpkin pie success. The first time that I made pumpkin pie, I failed. I mixed in condensed milk instead of evaporated milk and it tasted like an over sweetened piece of pumpkin candy. Yuck. But after my second try, it did taste fantastic. So I followed the same pattern and now I will share the recipe with you.

Ingredient s: Easy pie crust: 2 ¼ cups of all purpose flour + ¼ teaspoon of salt + 125g of cold unsalted butter Filling: 14 ounce can of evaporated milk + ½ cup of cream + 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon + 1 teaspoon of ground cloves + 1 ½ cups of cooked pumpkin puree + 3 large lightly beat eggs + ¼ teaspoon salt + ½ cup of flour + ½ cup of sugar

How To: Mix the salt and the flour. Add the butter and use a fork to mix them together. Add the salt and mix them well. Put the dough into a pie pan and press it around the pan. Use a spoon to mash the sides smooth. You need to take the 1 ½ cup of pumpkin puree and mix the 14 ounce can of evaporated milk, the ½ cup of cream and the ½ cup of flour. Mix them in a bowl. Then add the ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, the ¼ teaspoon of cloves, the 3 lightly beat eggs and the sugar. You need to pour the sticky liquid into the pie crust and place it into the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Then cook the pie at a high temperature, about 200 degrees fahrenheit for about 1 hour. Then let it cool. Once it is room temperature, you can add whip cream and enjoy. The pie will stay good longer if it is kept in the refrigerator.

Do you know how to travel with wisdom beyond your years? I do because I?ve been traveling since I was 2, and always moved every two years of my life. and in between traveled to exotic places. I am going to tell you how to travel easily These are some helpful tips to be prepared before you fly and happy throughout your trip. . When traveling you always, beforehand have to pack 2-4 days ahead and pack necessary things like enough underwear, toothbrush, and enough clothes for how many days you're going to be there. Then there is your carry on, be sure they are light and easy to carry around with you. Me in general would use a backpack instead of a wheely because it can get stuck between people and it is easy to lose, where as the backpack can be easier to keep track of and has more room. I personally would pack entertainment like, an iPad (a charger for the pasific place you are traveling to), a book ,toothbrush, and be sure that you don?t have food or water because they will confiscate these things when getting on the plane and in security, so buy and drink after you get to your gate. On the plane it depends on how many hours you are going to be on the plane. The more entertainment the better. The food is not all Packing enough entertainment in your that great, but carry-on can help make your trip more the snacks are enjoyable. ok but don?t expect much. The size of the plane also depends on the time in the air. Small plane, small time and big plane, bigger time. Prepare to land, when landing it will get bumpy and hold on tight. Leave the rest to your parents because they tell me to be quiet during the rest. You should be at your destination.

THEHISTORYOFHIPHOP

1982 - A Rad Year For Music ?Boom, boom, boom, boom,? came the deep bass sound from the speakers. The DJ started to scratch, ?wicky, wicky, wicky, wicky, wicky.? I remember it as if it was yesterday. ?A hip? . a hop? a hippy to the hippity hop? ?, I flowed into the mic. The crowd was roaring. We were the best rap group around. I am THE rapping innovator, Wonder Mike. All that hip hop you hear in the radio was popular because of us, The Sugar Hill Gang.

Like any other culture Hip Hop has art, including graffiti (urban art), music (rap, Hip Hop music), dance (breakdance), and clothes (upside down hats, Adidas shoes, gold chains, baggy clothes, etc.). Rap has changed throughout the years though, before rappers used to focus more on the rhymes and the content of their lyrics, but now rappers focus more on the sound of the music. For example, some rappers repeat the same line over and over in different ways using robotic voices and several different electronic voices that get layered over the song to give it a unique sound. Back in the 80?s, rap was all about parties, but now rappers usually rap about problems that the economy causes or the challenges that people face in their daily lives.

Ask yourself this question: What is the history of hip hop? Hip hop is not only music, but a culture. It Before you read this article, started around the 1970's, you might have thought that in big cities like New York. Hip Hop was just a sound or It started when people style of music, but now you would have block parties in know that Hip Hop is a the streets. DJ?s (short for tremendous cultural disc jockeys) and MC?s movement that has changed This is graf f it i. The art of Hip Hop (master of ceremonies) the world of music, clothes, would entertain the crowd dance, and art. Now the only by taking records, putting them on a turn-table, and thing left to do is go on home and turn up the radio. mixing the sounds. The sound was strange back then, See if you hear one of the many rapping talents, a and the rappers and DJ?s called the sound that came movement that all started back in the 1970?s in from the records mixing on the turn-tables, Brooklyn, then blew up in 1982, and has since ?scratching.? Eventually, the MC?s would start to make transformed into a global phenomenon. small rhymes that they?d sing/ rap over the sounds that the DJ?s were making, Later on the MC?s small rhymes turned to full songs.. This new sound revolutionized music as we know it. It didn?t all happen at once. It started at these block parties, then local radio stations started playing some of the new sounds. Soon some radio stations were dedicated only to Hip Hop. It continued with the scratching and plenty of people started to enjoy this music. People loved Hip Hop and Rap music, but they also liked Hip Hop as a culture so in the ?Golden Age of Hip Hop? (the mid eighties when Hip Hop was EXTREMELY popular), you would often see people wearing baggy-parachute pants, backwards hats and wearing Adidas shoes with fat shoelaces as these were key parts of the culture.

Making Our Work Real : Advert ising in The Tal on You may have noticed the advertising in this issue of The Talon. We're proud to work with Nido's Aquat ics Program and Papa John's Pizza to help us meet a goal that we have set for ourselves: we want to be a self-sufficient magazine that helps us "give our readers a chance to think, feel, laugh, and connect with each other." To become self-sufficient, we are selling advertising space to Nido community organizations and local businesses. Our hope is to raise enough funds from these advertisements to pay for color printing, purchase the special cameras needed for The Talon's Student Design Team, and pay for any other specialized equipment and resources we need to make our magazine and webazine (thetalon.nido.cl). More important than the money raised from these advertisements is the real-world experience our Student Marketing Team is gaining from pitching our magazine space to adult business people. Our Student Marketing Team has researched magazine advertising, and has Skyped with Marketing professionals from some large local magazines to figure out the best ways to put together a polished pitch to these professionals. Students have had to speak with clarity and confidence, use data to persuade, and have had to negotiate pricing... just like what happens in the real-world. If you know a Nido community organization and/ or a local business that might be interested in advertising in future issues of The Talon, please encourage them to contact our Student Marketing Team at our email (thetalon@nido.cl).
