Welcome to the JASA Art Show Thank you for supporting these talented JASA artists! In this catalog, you will see work from members of our programs across New York City. Some artists are professionals and others are newer to the craft, having picked up a paintbrush or knitting needles for the first time at a JASA art class. Each artist shares one common goal: for their hard work to support JASA and the 40,000 older adults we serve each year. Art programming is one of the ways we combat social isolation while fostering creativity. The results are magnificent. All funds received from the purchase of artwork will go to support JASA services.

At the very core, JASA enables older adults to remain in their own homes and communities connected to the people and things that give them meaning. We do this through a range of 20+ services that address both basic needs - food, shelter, and protection from abuse as well as the need to connect with others. Laurene Buckley (84) Club 76 Older Adult Center Born in St. Louis, MO, Laurene has called New York City home for the past 61 years. With a distinguished career in the museum world, she spent three decades as a museum director, following earlier roles as a curator and registrar. As a lifelong artist, Laurene has been sketching and painting for as long as she can remember. She first learned about JASA through a mutual friend and has since become an active participant in her center’s programs. She enjoys joining classes at senior centers for the opportunity to exercise, create art in a group setting, and share meals with others. Her favorite activities include yoga, figure drawing, and aerobics, which keep both her mind and body engaged. Through art and movement, Laurene continues to embrace creativity and community in her everyday life. 4

Pedro Seleme (71) Brookdale Village Older Adult Center Pedro is a New York City-based visual artist, educator, and author whose creative journey began under his father’s mentorship. He holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and has taught art and design at both the high school and university levels. Pedro’s diverse practice spans portraiture, painting, and illustration, with work featured in international exhibitions across the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, and the United States. A multidisciplinary creator, he is also the author and illustrator of three books of poetry. Today, he continues to share his expertise through workshops in drawing and painting, remaining dedicated to the "brushes and pencils" that have been his companions since adolescence.

Walter Weir (In Memoriam) Bartow Older Adult Center Walter was born and raised in Harlem, New York City. His mother was born in Guyana, South America, and his father was born in the Bahamas. He began his career as a printer and then worked as a faculty member of the State University of New York's Brooklyn campus, where he taught vocational and academic courses. Walter earned a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Photography from the City College of New York as well as a Master of Art in Media Studies, Video, and Photography from the New School for Social Research. Unlike many artists, Walter's background in printmaking allowed him to be able to pursue his art fulltime. Walter earned various accolades throughout his career. He received awards from the Photographic Society of America as well as the prestigious Silver Medal from the Royal Society of Arts in London, England. Walter was an artist for all of his life and his favorite media included drawing, sculpture, and photography. "For me, being an artist means that I am able to visualize my own imagination, and place it into a medium that is comfortable for me."

Sharon Reeves Davis (68) Coney Island Active Aging NORC Sharon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but she has considered New York City her home since the age of three, when her family moved to Coney Island for her father's job. She has spent most of her life in the neighborhood, except for an eight-year period in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a switchboard operator. In the 1990s, she returned to Brooklyn to continue her work as a switchboard operator at Coney Island Hospital, where she remained into the early 2000s. Sharon loves making earrings and painting. She is continuously exploring her artistic journey, learning new techniques, and refining her craft. She finds joy in creativity and expresses her unique style through her work. “With art, you can do anything. You can be who you want to be.” 8

Olga Rogatina (68) Luna Park Older Adult Center Olga Rogatina is originally from Moscow, Russia. When she was young, she studied at an arts program with a famous Russian artist. She put her talents to use and became an engineering schematic drafter, and later worked as a home health attendant and beauty salon manager. Olga moved to Brooklyn 23 years ago, near JASA’s Luna Park Older Adult Center. When she retired 5 years ago, she started looking for art classes, and found JASA. In addition to art classes, she enjoys Zumba and Belly Dancing.

Steve Henderson (71) Van Cortlandt Older Adult Center Steve was born in Red Oak, Virginia, where he lived until he was six years old. His family moved to New York City in pursuit of the American Dream. Steve worked for 16 years as a housing specialist with Lenox Hill Neighborhood Housing, focusing on helping women find stable housing. He also helped clients with securing the proper paperwork and the physical relocation into their new homes. After retiring, Steve discovered a new passion for painting, which he began exploring in 2023. Seeking to deepen his skills, he joined the art class at his local JASA center. Steve’s love for art has grown as he continues to learn and express himself creatively in a welcoming community setting. 12

Maiya Rozenblat (87) Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Maiya was born in Crimea, where she worked as a physician. She relocated to New York City in 1995. Maiya has been attending JASA for over ten years and was first drawn to the center because of the art programming. "I always wanted to try out art as a hobby, and I see that I am getting better through the years. Here at the center, we are a community of amateurs learning from each other. It's a beautiful thing." Maiya feels that being an artist is a central part of her ability to maintain an active lifestyle as an older adult. When she is not taking art classes, she is spending time with her grandchildren helping them master the Russian language, and volunteering at the Center through a program that assists veterans of WWII. "It is so important to try new things. As people, we are always developing. At every stage and every age." 14

Galyna Barvinok (67) Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Galyna was born and raised in Minsk, Belarus. She got married when she was 21 and moved to Kiev, Ukraine where she worked as an animation artist for a movie production studio for five years. In 1996, she moved to Brooklyn and worked as a florist for another five years before becoming a babysitter. At the age of 60, she started attending JASA, which sparked her passion for artwork. This was five years ago. “We have a great teacher, have a great time, and have lots of friends. This community is filled with love and joy.” "I enjoy taking art classes at Senior Alliance because of the friends I have made." 15

Galina Bineman (80) Brookdale Village Older Adult Center Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Galina was born in Ukraine and worked as a hydraulics engineer in Almaty. Her career continued in the United States, where she worked as an AutoCAD operator and designer in architectural firms. Although she had never painted before, she loved it and admired the works of great masters while living in New York. Upon her retirement, Galina found herself with a lot of free time and decided to try her hand at painting. She took various online lessons and eventually found herself at JASA, where she stayed and continued to pursue her passion for painting. "This is a great place where you can not only learn how to draw, but also see the work of others, listen to the teacher’s comments, and take part in exhibitions. I really love traveling and always bring a lot of photographs from my travels, and now I have the opportunity to transfer my impressions to canvas." 16

Olga Malamud-Pavlovich (74) Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Olga grew up in the historic city of Yekaterinburg in Russia. She worked as a university-level chemistry professor. Twelve years ago, she moved to New York City and became an artist. “Throughout my adult life, I never really had time to participate in art. I have not painted regularly since I was a child. While I always wanted to, life kept getting in the way. I am glad that JASA gives me the opportunity to live my dream of finally being able to be an artist.” Olga’s favorite medium is paint, and she loves to depict landscapes. “My goal is to use art to depict the world around me. I am a big nature lover, and that definitely shows in my art.” She loves that the art instructor incorporates the historical context of different art periods into her lessons.

Doris is a New York City native and grew up in East Brooklyn. She worked for 28 years as a supervisor in child support and social services. Doris began attending Roy Reuther in 2019. The painting class intrigued her, so she decided to sign up. She discovered her love for painting through this class. Painting makes her happy, and it makes her feel great because she is accomplishing something beautiful. "I always made crafts for Christmas and all kinds of holidays, and so now I paint with my free time in retirement." 20

Larisa Vaness (73) Brookdale Village Older Adult Center, Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Larisa was born and raised in the USSR (Russia). She graduated from school and entered the Institute in Moscow. When she moved to the United States, she worked in the fashion industry. After retiring, Larisa discovered how much free time she had and realized how much she longed to draw. Ever since her childhood, Larisa had dreamed of learning to draw. While at her JASA Older Adult Center, Larisa heard about the opportunity to take art classes. “I decided to try it and came to the center for the first time in 2022. It's nice to learn new things about artists and their works. After each lesson and communication with like-minded people, I receive a new supply of inspiration. The center brings together lonely people who need communication.” 22

Zita Gershovits (75) Coney Island Active Aging NORC, Scheuer House Older Adult Center Seven years ago, Zita decided to visit the JASA Scheuer House and Coney Island Active Aging centers to see what they each had to offer. She discovered the art classes, which she had always wanted to try. “I have always liked art. I always went to the museum because I was interested in famous painters. And the art class will inspire you! You find out something new that you never would have known.” 24

Galyna Mizevych (71) CIAA NORC Scheuer House Older Adult Center Galyna first started coming to JASA about two and a half ago and started using acrylic paint and watercolor pencils to create her artwork. “I enjoy drawing. It is nice to take a break from everyday life.” 26

Dre Anderson (73) Starrett City Older Adult Center Dre Anderson, originally from West Virginia, grew up in New York City, and attended Brooklyn College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Commercial Art and later pursued a second degree in Early Childhood Education. Dre taught elementary education at a private school and recently retired (or semi-retired, as he likes to say). After many years of not being creative, he reconnected with his passion for art. He draws inspiration from the world around him and specializes in monograms, mixed media, and religious artwork. Dre primarily uses magic markers, colored pencils, and ink pens in his creations. 28

Nonna Ostrova (62) Luna Park Annex Older Adult Center, Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Nonna Ostrova was born in Moscow, Russia, and worked there as a civil engineer. In 1991, she moved to Brooklyn and has lived there ever since. After she retired, a friend told her that she was going to visit JASA’s Luna Park Older Adult Center and invited Nonna to join. They both still attend classes today! Nonna’s favorite activities are belly dancing, exercise, Pilates, and aerobics. “I’ve loved art all of my life. It’s like a return for me.” 29

Marie Bell (In Memoriam) Roy Reuther Older Adult Center Marie was Brooklyn born and raised. As a transplant to the Rockaways, she was looking for activities to join and found them at the JASA Roy Reuther Older Adult Center, where her mother lived in the building. Marie encouraged her mother to sign up at the center and to take part in the various classes. After her mother passed away, Marie volunteered at the center, and led some of the art and fabric-making classes. “I first heard about JASA in The Wave, a local newspaper. I was inspired by my family and surroundings, and when I had free time I started knitting and crocheting. I love living here by the water. It’s relaxing. Sometimes all you want to do is make a bracelet, make a chain; you don’t have to rush to do anything.” Marie sold some of the jewelry she made at flea markets outside of her building. “I just like art. I like to work with my hands. My father used to draw and my brother used to do the same thing. It’s a family tradition that we all work with our hands.” 30

Lucy Chuglaz (73) Luna Park Annex Older Adult Center Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Lucy was born in 1953 in Kiev, Ukraine, and has lived in New York City since 1995. Trained as a professional librarian at the Institute of Culture in Ukraine, she later worked as a health aide serving women, and also supported her husband’s surveying work in NYC. A longtime member of the Brighton Beach community, she learned about JASA through local connections and has continued to pursue her lifelong love of painting through its art programs. She gives credit to her art teachers, Roza and Tatiana, who have helped to foster her love for painting and hone her skills as an artist. 32

Yolanda Jones (70) Bartow Older Adult Center Yolanda was born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn. After working for 46 years at both Lincoln and Harlem Hospitals, Yolanda finally retired and quickly realized that she needed something to do. She prayed to God to help guide her. The answer came to her, and she discovered painting. "I had never painted prior to this in my life. I tried to do what other people were doing, but I found it to be very difficult. This is when I started painting from my heart.” Yolanda likes to paint the sky, sun, moon, and grass. With this newfound passion, she can see life beginning and not ending. 34

Lioudmila Danilevitch (78) Coney Island Active Aging NORC, Scheuer House Older Adult Center Before retirement, Lioudmila was a professional musician and jazz singer. Throughout her career, she toured with a jazz ensemble in the Soviet Union. In 2018, Lioudmila joined her local JASA centers after one of her friends told her about the art class, which featured watercolor painting. She had never painted before coming to JASA. In her artwork, Lioudmila uses her collection of catalogs, books, and art books to draw inspiration. Her favorite part about coming to the art classes is the communication with friends and learning different ways to continue her artwork. “I try to duplicate and add on to things that I see. It saves me from just sitting and watching in the corner.” 36

Lyudmila Bastrykova (71) Luna Park Older Adult Center & Scheuer House Older Adult Center Lyudmila was born in Ukraine. Raised in a humble, blue-collar family, she began studying music at the age of nine. She went on to graduate from music school and music college, ultimately earning licensure as a music conductor and choir instructor. Lyudmila worked in the field of music until immigrating to the United States in 2002. After her arrival, she worked as a Home Health Aide until her retirement in 2021. She is currently continuing her creative journey by attending Fine Art classes at the JASA Luna Park Annex Older Adult Center. 38

Patricia Boyd (71) Co-op City NORC Patricia was born in White Plains, New York, and has lived in New York for 70 years. She worked for 40 years at the law firm Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson on Wall Street. When she told a friend about her retirement, she offered to connect her with JASA. Patricia joined during COVID and attended classes via Zoom, as well as in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. “JASA has been a godsend for me. I participate in crocheting, knitting, cooking classes, paint and sip, embroidery, and various art pursuits. I had never taken an art class before joining JASA, and I didn’t know I had any talent.” Patricia also loves photography and felt it would enhance her art, which turned out to be true. “Art is very relaxing and stimulates my mind. JASA classes fill my week with diverse activities; for instance, I currently line dance at all three centers in Co-op City, and I take exercise classes (Zumba, fitness, tai chi), as well as other art classes (drawing and watercolor). I enjoy trips to Sight and Sound Theatre, museums, boat rides, Carnegie Hall concerts, and JASA’s art exhibit at Cooper Square!”

Barry Donaldson (77) Club 76 Older Adult Center A New York City resident for over five decades, Barry is a multidisciplinary artist who turned to drawing and painting as a vital creative outlet during the pandemic. Originally from Long Beach, CA, Barry’s professional background as a Corporate Director of Store Planning and Private Estate Manager shaped the structure and style of his artwork. Barry’s artistic journey spans several mediums, including basket weaving at NYU and fabric arts. Currently focused on life drawing and watercolors at JASA, he draws inspiration from New York’s museums and galleries, continuing a lifelong commitment to artistic growth and community engagement. 40

Bill Tripician (78) Club 76 Older Adult Center With over 50 years of residency in New York City, Bill is a versatile creator whose life has been deeply rooted in the arts. Bill’s professional history spans the creative spectrum — from his work as a high school teacher and retail display designer to his time as an actor and casting director. A university art major and former freelance artist, Bill returned to his practice at JASA to reconnect with his visual roots. His current work explores drawing, painting, and collage, fueled by a lifelong appreciation for the theater, museums, and the galleries of the city. 41

Deborah Thomas (74) Brookdale Village Older Adult Center Deborah was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and moved to New York over 20 years ago. She worked as a teacher and a social worker, and was also a writer, winning several awards. She describes herself as having been creative since she was young, drawing and painting on and off, and participating in several art exhibitions. Deborah moved to Far Rockaway in 2019 and got involved in her local JASA center. Through the center’s art classes, she reengaged with her creativity. “I’ve been doing art for over 40 years. JASA allowed me to rediscover this part of my life - art is my favorite class there.” 42

Cheryll Hunter (76) Co-op City NORC Cheryll was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, where she worked as a payroll supervisor. After her retirement, she discovered a hidden talent for painting when one of her neighbors, a fellow JASA artist named Patricia, showed her some of her artwork and invited her to join painting classes at their local center. In addition to painting, Cheryll enjoys participating in a book club and loves line dancing and salsa dancing at the center. 43

Maria Volovik (85) Coney Island Active Aging NORC, Scheuer House Older Adult Center Maria has been an artist for over 11 years and joined her local JASA centers six years ago. One of her friends was participating in the art classes and convinced her to join. “When I start doing a sketch, it’s okay. When I start to mix the colors, that is where I start getting inspired.” 44

Tatiana Ofri (69) Roy Reuther Older Adult Center Tatiana was raised in Ukraine and lived in Tel Aviv for many years. She studied software design and worked in the technology industry, creating digital models for hearing aids. She credits her success in this field to a love of visual art from her childhood. After some time, she and her husband embarked on a joint venture where she could hone the art of conversation - commercial real estate. After her husband passed away, she closed the business and spent more time looking after her mother. Tatiana began to incorporate art into her daily life after joining JASA. Her mother resides at JASA's Brookdale Campus, and they enjoy their ample opportunities to spend quality time together. 46

Carol Morris (71) Starrett City Older Adult Center Carol is originally from Guyana, and has called New York City home for over 34 years. Before retiring, she began her career as a Home Economics teacher and later worked as a senior dietary aide after moving to New York. Carol discovered JASA through the Senior Partner Adult Center and joined the art classes at the encouragement of her director, Donna, who suggested painting as a wonderful hobby. Carol enjoys visiting museums and especially loves being part of the Acrylic Painting class, where she and her fellow seniors share their creativity, learn from one another, and support each other. 49

Senior Alliance Older Adult Center When Fira was a child, she loved to draw. For years, she dreamed of being an artist, but it wasn’t until she retired that she pursued her passion. When she started her search for art classes in her area, a friend told her about JASA. Fira began attending classes at Senior Alliance in 2019. Even during the pandemic, Fira attended classes over Zoom. She would send her art to her teacher Tatiana and communicate virtually. “The art class is beautiful and our teacher is very knowledgeable. She educates us. Tatiana teaches us about many different artists and makes us interested in trying different types of art.” 50

Kumali Zairee (75) Coney Island Active Aging NORC Kumali was born in Guyana and relocated to the United States at five years old. Nancy Johnson (72) Co-op City Older Adult Center Born and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Nancy developed a deep love for nature during her summers at the beach. Although she’s always loved art, family, and life’s demands prevented her from pursuing it. In the 1960s, she moved to New York City, where she married, had a family, and had a successful career in the insurance industry. However, at the age of 60, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a New York City school teacher, which she loved. She remained a teacher until her retirement. Nancy now pursues her interests, which include traveling, salsa dancing, line dancing, art classes, and playing Pinochle with friends at the shore. She began drawing as a young child and became especially dedicated to her art in high school. A friend introduced her to a wellness class at Einstein, which led her to discover JASA. The weekly art classes have provided Dorothea with a space “to sit down with no distractions” and fully experience the relaxation that art brings her. She enjoys taking a variety of classes, including Spanish. For Dorothea, JASA represents “getting up, getting out, and doing stuff with people.” 60

Sylvia Elcock-Als (78) Starrett City Older Adult Center Sylvia Elcock-Als is a retired NYC Department of Education educator whose lifelong passion for art and creativity has been an integral part of who she is. Born in St. Lucia and raised in Jamaica, Sylvia came to the United States at the age of 13, bringing with her a deep appreciation for creativity and self-expression. During her teaching career, Sylvia had the privilege of working with young learners in Pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade. The visual arts played an important role in how she connected with her students, using creativity as a meaningful way to engage, encourage, and nurture their imaginations. After retiring in 2023, Sylvia has continued to embrace her love of art. She remains active with JASA where she spends time painting, drawing, and exploring other creative pursuits. Geraldo Rivera (67) Einstein Older Adult Center Geraldo started painting when he was just four years old, and continues to do so now that he is retired. Geraldo worked for 43 years as a handyman at an apartment complex in Manhattan, where he used his love for art to help organize 17 art shows with other artists from the buildings. Although Geraldo is not professionally taught, he enjoys teaching classes at his JASA center, as well as taking classes from the other art teacher, Ron Cruz. Geraldo uses oil paint to create the majority of his pieces, but the pieces he donated this year are watercolor pieces he painted in Ron’s classes. “I like to paint because it’s good therapy for us older adults, it’s nice to relax the mind.” 66

In retirement, Lyubov had more time on her hands. She has poor vision, and can only see peripherally. Painting became a way to challenge herself. He has been attending the Van Cortlandt JASA center since 2019, after learning about it from a friend. She began her artistic journey in the second grade and later studied at the Art Students League of New York. Initially a textile designer, she spent 26 years as an activity therapist at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, where she led art and music programs for seniors with various challenges until her retirement during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Beth is actively involved in her community as a member of the Activity Advisory Group at her local JASA senior center. She organizes trips to the Museum of Modern Art, arranges visits from local religious leaders, and promotes activities like swimming and book clubs. She is the mother of two children and grandmother to three grandchildren. Margarita immigrated to the United States in 2003, where she developed an interest in drawing. She later became a member of the JASA Luna Park Annex Older Adult Center and began attending Fine Art classes under the guidance of Roza, a dedicated and highly skilled instructor. Through this experience, Margarita has been encouraged to grow as an artist and further develop her creativity. 80

Gail Schlesser (74) Warbasse Cares NORC Gail was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and has lived there her entire life. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and shortly after became an animator. She has been sketching since she was a child, and was inspired by Disney and MAD magazine. Gail's cartoons have been published in a trade paper for comic book fans and collectors. Gail enjoys attending her local JASA center to get out of the house, take art classes with her favorite art teacher, Maddie Sorel, and participate in jewelrymaking classes. She also likes to socialize with neighbors and go on different field trips with the center. 81

Gladys Abend (83) Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Gladys was born in the Lower East Side of New York City and later moved to Brooklyn. She started taking ballet lessons at the age of five and continued to pursue it for most of her life. She was a backup dancer for the Metropolitan Opera and filled in whenever needed. Gladys attended Brooklyn College and received an Associate of Arts degree in home economics. Later, she pursued higher education and earned two master's degrees in Special Education. She started her teaching career in 1985 and devoted 26 years to teaching special education. She taught students in middle school and elementary school, but eventually found her calling in high school education. Gladys doesn’t only take art classes - she also takes part in belly dancing classes! Without JASA, Gladys says retirement would be boring. She enjoys the community she found in her JASA center. “You can start at any age. You always have it in you - you just need to discover it.” 82

Marc Prusslin (71) Luna Park Older Adult Center Marc has lived in New York City his whole life. He worked as a photographer for 12 years, doing work for companies such as JCPenney and Sears, photographing for the home and clothing departments. He has always had an inkling for all kinds of art: woodworking, sculpture, watercolor painting, and more. "Anything to do with art, I pick up on." His sister found out about JASA and encouraged him to go. Marc has now been attending JASA classes for five years. Marc loves attending the art classes - it's an outlet for him. Since retiring, Marc found that he had so much time on his hands, and painting is a great way for him to spend it. "I have enjoyed trying out different types of art and finding my creativity."

She also had a home-based cosmetic business for many years and worked as a seamstress from home. She’s always loved to sew and draw as a child and young adult. Some of her favorite classes are art, crafts, crocheting and knitting class, Zumba, line dance and tai chi. She also enjoys going to plays and visiting other malls to shops. 84

Iris White (68) Bay Eden Older Adult Center Iris was born in rural Virginia and moved to the Bronx more than 40 years ago. She attended Lehman College and Mercy College, before becoming a preschool teacher for 40 years at the East Side House Settlement. Iris has always enjoyed art, sharing the passion with her cousin Hyacinth. One day while out on a walk with her dog, Iris stumbled upon JASA’s Bay Eden Older Adult Center in the Bronx. A JASA staff member showed her around, described the variety of classes and activities available, and asked her if she wanted to join. “I was interested when I learned that JASA had classes which would show different styles and techniques. It’s so relaxing and peaceful when you’re drawing and creating things.” Her favorite classes include gardening and creative movement, and of course, art. 85

Nadia Uzinsky (77) Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Nadia immigrated to New York from the Soviet Union in 1989. In the Soviet Union, she worked as a structural engineer, creating technical drawings and performing structural calculations for unique buildings, interiors, and sculptural structures. She produced detailed sketches that were used by draftsmen in the design process. After moving to the United States, Nadia completed her education as a medical technologist, earned her license, and worked for 28 years as a microbiologist at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. Throughout her studies and career in microbiology — examining amoebas, parasites, fungi, viruses, and other microorganisms — she often drew what she observed, blending scientific study with visual expression. Art has been a lifelong passion for Nadia. Now in retirement, she has the time to fully dedicate herself to art education, study, and painting. She enjoys working across a variety of mediums, including pencil, watercolor, oil, acrylic, and mixed media. 86

Nelya Azhishceva (74) Luna Park Annex Older Adult Center Nelya was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 1948. She graduated from high school in 1965 and completed technical training in economics in 1969. She worked in Kyiv as an accountant and later as a senior accountant before emigrating to the United States in 1994. From 1995 to 2020, she worked as a home care worker in New York City. In 2023, she began taking drawing classes at JASA with instructor Rosa. She also participates in aerobics, Pilates, tai chi, and JASA excursions. Nelya is married, has two children, and one grandson. 88

She left Poland with a master’s degree in art and initially sought work in nonprofit organizations. However, she ended up in advertising. She enjoys painting landscapes and loves the nearby beaches for their lighting and vibrant colors. She feels at home at Brookdale Village, referring to her neighborhood as "Little Europe" because of its diverse population, where many languages are spoken. Eva appreciates the friendly and supportive community, especially as she considers the challenges of aging. She values the helpfulness of others, including home attendants, and enjoys the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a close-knit community. 89

She still volunteers with the older adult center and even started taking art classes there. “I saw this group painting and was very interested. The teacher was very nice, and she helped me learn step-by-step.” 90

She became a member of JASA’s Starrett City Older Adult Center a year ago after a former coworker introduced her to the center. A lifelong crocheter, Dionicia learned the craft as a young girl from her mother and grandmother, as well as in elementary school. Beyond crafting, Dionicia also participates in tai chi, enjoying its slow-paced, meditative movements. Gloria Dixon (79) Bartow Older Adult Center Gloria was born in Danville, Virginia, and has been a New Yorker for 60 years, working as an Administrative Assistant in a Nursing Department. Introduced to JASA in 2024 by fellow artist Patricia Boyd, she actively participates across the Dreiser, Bartow, and NORC centers. Though she had no prior experience, Gloria discovered a passion for drawing and painting through JASA's programming, finding that art relaxes her while stimulating her mind and imagination. Today, she enthusiastically attends three separate JASA art classes alongside enjoying the wide variety of activities the organization offers.

After I got married and had twins (a daughter and a son), I stopped. So with two kids and a full-time job as a doctor, I didn't have time for art. Victoria Yankovsky (76) Luna Park Annex Older Adult Center Victoria was born in 1949 in Odessa, Ukraine, which at the time was part of the Soviet Union. She studied, married, and raised a family before beginning her career as a mechanical engineer at a design company. In 1993, Victoria immigrated to the United States with her family. In New York, she studied accounting and later worked in the accounting department of an apparel company. Throughout her life, she maintained a strong interest in art and visited museums whenever possible. After retiring, Victoria began attending JASA Luna Park Annex, where she especially enjoys the art classes. Raisa Tasevich (79) Warbasse Cares NORC Raisa first attended her neighborhood JASA center after she received a call about attending classes. She immediately joined and began enjoying the different classes they offered. “I had never painted before, but I discovered that I can hold a brush and make something! This is the fourth year I’ve been, and it’s a lot of fun! I am retired, so I found my hobby, and I like it. It gives me self-esteem that I can create something beautiful.” “When you’re retired, it can be lonely, and it’s hard to go outside. It gives me something to look forward to. This is my first year at the art show, and it’s exciting to see my art displayed for everyone to see. I have so many friends in my classes, they’re very nice people, and I love it. I want to say thank you to JASA because it makes my life richer. We make new friends, we discuss, it’s wonderful.” 99

Brenda Pierre (66) Starrett City Older Adult Center Brenda was born in Brooklyn. Before she retired, she worked as a Sales Associate at the United State Postal Service for 33 years. She found out about JASA through her neighbor and began attending art classes. She had done art previously through school and it was always very soothing and relaxing. Her favorite classes at JASA are painting and jewelry-making, as well as the exercise classes. She enjoys going on the JASA field trips to museums, Broadway, and City Island. 100

Vivian Pizarro (68) Starrett City Older Adult Center Vivian was born in Brooklyn to Puerto Rican parents and speaks Spanish. She has lived in Brooklyn her whole life and enjoyed spending time in the Village and Soho during her youth. Vivian worked for Newsweek and Seagrams before using her education degree to run a daycare and work with the Board of Education. At 60, she learned about the JASA center through word of mouth and now swims regularly at the gym above it. She is passionate about art, participating in jewelry making, crocheting, and painting, a hobby since high school. This is her second year in the art show. “JASA is a place where you can come to congregate, share your views with others, and a place where you can be creative and enjoy other people's company. We get together and talk and share and learn about different ideas, become a network, and you get to know things you didn’t know.” 104

Izabella Gutman (77) Brookdale Village Older Adult Center Izabella is from Ukraine. She started taking classes at Brookdale Village in 2013, but has been painting and creating art since 2000. When she moved to the JASA Brookdale Village Campus, she met a fellow artist who encouraged her to take advantage of the campus art room, and to continue to express her creativity. Izabella likes the self-expression of thought and the self-affirmation that art gives her. "Being an artist means everything to me! It is my hobby and I love it!"

Yelena Zagarsky (71) Senior Alliance Older Adult Center, Trumps United NORC Yelena was born in Uzbekistan and has been living in New York for almost three and a half years. Previously, she worked as an auditor and IT specialist. She found out about JASA through a friend who introduced her to their art classes, and she has been loving them ever since. In addition, she enjoys practicing belly dancing and yoga, which are both very important to her. Through these activities, she has had the opportunity to meet some amazing people in her classes. “Joining JASA has been the best decision I have made so far.”

Noreen Storch (79) Club 76 Older Adult Center Noreen Findlan Storch, 79, is a lifelong artist, avid gardener, and longtime New Yorker who has called the city home for 50 years. Originally from Chicago, Noreen moved to Atlanta after college, where she worked as a director at an advertising agency. Noreen has been painting for 65 years, studying under a student of Hans Hofmann. For the past 40 years, she has focused on abstracts and landscapes. Through JASA, Noreen discovered a community where she could continue her passion for art and dancing. She now volunteers teaching art classes at Club 76, sharing her love of painting with others. An avid gardener and botanist at heart, Noreen especially loves trees — a passion she inherited from her mother, who was also a dedicated gardener.

Shaye Broadnax (69) Co-op City Older Adult Center Shaye is a lifelong New Yorker and Registered Respiratory Therapist specializing in neonatal and pediatric care. She was introduced to JASA through a friend and has enjoyed becoming part of its creative community. Shaye holds a degree in Art from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). She loves drawing from life in various mediums, working with ceramics, visiting museums, and sharing her passion for art with children. For Shaye, art is a meaningful way to connect, create, and continue learning.

Angelina Alexandrova (86) Brookdale Village Older Adult Center Angelina was born in Moscow, Russia. After graduating from university, she worked as an economist. In the early 1990s, she won a green card lottery and moved to the United States to make a new life for herself. She began to participate in JASA programming 12 years ago and became an even more active participant after moving into the JASA Brookdale Village Affordable Senior Housing Campus. "Living at the JASA campus is so helpful! Living here, I learned to paint, play the guitar, and so much more." 112

Ronen Shalom (63) Club 76 Older Adult Center Ronen, originally from Israel, has been a New Yorker for 34 years and is an active volunteer and member at Club 76 OAC. His passion for painting and drawing led him to join JASA's art classes to further develop his artistic skills. Ronen also enjoys technology, visiting museums, and exploring the city's parks. 113

Warbasse Cares NORC Susan was born and raised in Brooklyn. She spent her entire career working as a tax preparer until her retirement. Nine years ago, a neighbor recommended JASA Warbasse Cares NORC to Susan when she needed some assistance. Susan decided to try a class taught by Madeline and discovered her love for all the things she learned. “I love the process of creating in a pleasant group. Another class I totally enjoy is Jennifer Wade’s classes at the Coney Island Scheuer House where we do clay and tile work that can be fired in the kiln.” Apart from classes, JASA Warbasse Cares NORC organizes various trips, including visits to Carnegie Hall, Brooklyn Museum, MoMA, and the Met, among others. Susan looks forward to these trips and sees them as an added bonus to the classes she enjoys. 114

Nina Dinkevich (72) Warbasse Cares NORC Nina was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and has lived in NYC since 1997. Before retiring, she spent 23 years in technology in Kiev. She later worked as a Housing Assistant for New York City Housing after graduating with a degree in business management and administration in the US. She discovered the JASA center three years ago and fulfilled her dream of trying watercolor by taking a beginner class. She also has a background in gymnastics. She enjoys painting landscapes, often inspired by pictures she takes on walks, and this is her second year participating in the art show. She participates in many activities at JASA, including choir, painting, yoga, and trips, and attends almost every activity, including museum visits. JASA is a very important part of her life now that she is retired and her children are grown, especially after her husband passed away, as it keeps her busy and social. She describes what JASA means to her: “It makes me happy, this is my life, and at least two days I'm at JASA, and I participate, and it’s very important because I’m busy, I’m happy, and it’s my life right now. I’m a very active person and like to be with people and help people.” 115

Sonia Reyes (66) Warbasse Cares NORC Sonia was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Brooklyn, speaking fluent Spanish. She went to Fordham and worked mostly in administration, and retired from Mt. Sinai. She's lived in the NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) for 30 years and found the JASA center for her mother, and couldn’t wait until her own retirement to start attending. She enjoys the art classes because the ladies are welcoming and the teacher is patient. This is her third year participating in the art show. She loves the center because she has made "loads of friends" and attends functions and trips with them, including art classes, exercise classes, movie day, and trips. “It’s a moment of trying to calm down with these lovely, intelligent ladies and trying to get away from the everyday realities outside of JASA.” 116

Joel Goldman (79) Senior Alliance Older Adult Center Joel was born and raised in Brooklyn and currently lives in Brighton Beach. He has been drawing on and off since he was 8 years old, and now finally has the time to do it regularly! Sue Ginsberg Older Adult Center Antonia was born in Puerto Rico and has lived in NYC since the 1960s. Throughout her career, she worked to help disabled New Yorkers find resources and systems to help improve their lives. When Sue Ginsberg began to give yarn to its members, she started to regularly make knitted goods to donate to the center for raffles and fundraisers. 118

Troubled Waters Ahead 7" x 10" ($40)

Fran Vitale (67) Club 76 Older Adult Center Fran Vitale, a Brooklyn native from Coney Island, raised 3 children and worked on and off before retiring, was introduced to her JASA center by a friend. She began drawing and painting a couple of years ago, finding that art allows her to "get lost" as she lets her hand just go. After only one art class, she has been working on her own, and this is her first time participating in the art show. She enjoys the center because she is able to socialize, meet new people, and participate in groups like bingo, drama club, and sewing club. For her, the JASA center provides a strong sense of community: “JASA is a great place to be among other people so you are not alone.” 119

Paula Holodofsky (87) Van Cortlandt Older Adult Center Paula is a lifelong New Yorker who grew up in the Bronx. Before retiring, she spent 31 years as an early childhood teacher. Paula has always been creative and enjoys working with her hands, from making earrings to creating art. She first began attending JASA’s art classes and quickly became a regular, especially enjoying the jewelry and art classes. With JASA’s expanded locations, Paula is able to participate more often in the activities she loves. 120

Galina Goizman (85) Warbasse Cares NORC Galina was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, and has called New York City home for 51 years. Before retiring, she worked as a Medical Coordinator and jeweler. A resident of Warbasse, Galina discovered JASA through flyers posted in her building and soon joined the arts and crafts class at JASA Warbasse Cares. She quickly fell in love with drawing and has continued to explore her creativity through art. A returning participant in the JASA art show, Galina also enjoys painting and choir.
