Daniel Rivera-Ibarra and his JA classmates conceptualized an app that would bring people together by quickly organizing pickup games of ultimate frisbee, kickball and other sports. He wrote a business plan, developed a budget and pitched the concept at a JA competition. He was determined because he competed one year prior, but did not win. Undiscouraged, Daniel sharpened his presentation skills and returned to compete, and this time he was successful. Daniel is now studying finance at the University of Colorado, Denver, while also working with a tech startup he helped form called PocketChange, a social media charitable giving platform. Daniel credits his experience in JA as the moment he feels his life shifted. “This is the moment where I learned how to become more confident, be a better networker and how to present myself to people. This is where I met some of my mentors, some of the people that have continued to help me in life,” he says. We know from data that students, like Daniel, who participate in high school JA programs reveal differences in their optimism about achieving future success. One reason is that they know that they have the support of JA volunteers and donors behind them, and they’ve developed the confidence, know-how and determination to succeed. JA has always had tremendous outcomes for students. Last year, after four years of rigorous study, we began evolving from an organization that weighted its success by the number of students reached, to an organization that is focused on achieving significant learning outcomes. Our new organizational strategy is laser focused on elevating student outcomes by reaching the right classroom environment, at the right time, with the right program and the right volunteer. We are already seeing incredible results from our refined business model with the number of teacher and volunteer evaluations received with the highest possible ratings increasing from 39 percent to 60 percent in one year. JA Finance Park JA Finance Park, presented by Transamerica, helps students build a foundation upon which they can make intelligent financial decisions that last a lifetime, including decisions related to income, expenses, savings, and credit. The experience begins in the classroom with an in-depth curriculum that culminates in a day at the park. Students become an adult for the day while at the park, immersing themselves in a reality-based decision-making process addressing aspects of personal budgeting. JA also offers an online version of the program. JA reached 19,579 middle and high school students from 158 schools through JA Finance Park during the 2017/18 school year. The program is offered at no cost to students or schools thanks to the support of volunteers and sponsors. Students report that JA Finance Park encourages them to change their spending habits and to not live beyond their means. Nearly two-thirds of high school students found their experience made them more confident in planning for their financial future. JA Finance Park also improved students’ attitudes toward work and education, particularly among low-income students. Their attitudes about career development, education, confidence and leadership increased dramatically compared to their higher income peers.

JA Apple Society The JA Apple Society was created to thank and recognize our amazing classroom volunteers for their dedication to JA’s mission. This exclusive recognition is earned through a steadfast commitment to engaging with students multiple times a year. Volunteers receive a special gift after reaching 250, 500, 750, 1,000 and 1,500 students. There are currently 934 members of JA Apple Society.
