WELCOME My Portfolio My name is Jared Lombardi, a graduate architecture/design student at the University of Kansas. I anticipate earning my Master of Architecture degree in May 2024, along with a minor in Business. There are two certificates I will also acquire, Design-Build and Urban Design. My studies have provided insight on the functionality and practicality of constructing a space as well as the significance of aesthetics in design. I have learned through trial and error about the importance of strategic designing and maintaining a thoughtful building process. The vitality and energy in this field are palpable. The more I am immersed in architecture classes, studio time, new programs, site visits, collaboration, and reading, the more enthusiastic and eager I am to join the profession. The following pages reflect a sampling from some of the academic and professional architectural design projects, which I especially enjoyed working on. These pieces demonstrate my curiosity and desire for learning, my abilities as a creative thinker, and my developing aptitude in technological skills.

Prompt Studio 804 offers an extensive, year-long opportunity tailored for graduate students entering their final year in the Master's of Architecture program at the University of Kansas. The collaborative team engages in the holistic design of a residential home and the execution of all project facets, ranging from site planning, zoning and code compliance, budgeting, and material take-off estimates, to the detailed creation of construction documents, permit sets, and overseeing the entire building process. This direct involvement spans a multitude of diverse jobs, such as concrete work, framing, roofing, siding, plumbing, and more. Notably, we are proud to be on track to achieve the program's 17th LEED Platinum certification with the completion of our upcoming single-family home project in May 2024, underscoring our commitment to sustainable design practices.

Captured here are some of my firsthand experiences showcasing a myriad of tasks I've undertaken in Studio 804. These images encapsulate various duties on site, from the meticulous process of laying concrete to the precise execution of drywall installation. Through this class, I have delved into the intricate architectural details that define a building, gaining insight and expanding my understanding of the construction process beyond the initial design phases.

Design-Build
In this unique third year course called Design-Build, students toil as a team on a project that is designed, planned out, and built by the class. Our project is titled the Reptilian Pavilion. It is located on the northwest side of Topeka at the Kansas Children's Discovery Center. The initial structure was started by a previous class; however, the shading or roofing method had not been designed. Our plan for roofing shingles stemmed from using recycled street signs. The color scheme followed the vibrant and playful energy of a rainbow, which is a notable theme throughout KCDC. The shaping of the shingles and overall layout mimicked the skin of a reptile. As for the logistics of finishing the project, help from many companies along the way is welcomed. Designing the pavilion, seeking assistance, and putting it all together strengthened basic project management skills as a class.

The roofing shingles are not only present to shade the pavilion but also lend an educational purpose to this area of the discovery center. The alternating rainbow pattern and print text allow for letter recognition in the street signs that were used, while the color reflectance and shadows casted on the ground spark curiosity and creativity

Design
This third-year task centers around the idea of a museum acting as a flexible multifunctional space for the community of Lawrence, Kansas. The theme for this museum includes a three-piece gallery layout, reflecting the three important eras of Lawrence history—prehistoric Lawrence, the Lawrence Massacre or Quantrill’s Raid period, and the rebuilding post-massacre. Lighting and materiality aid in generating a separate feel between the rooms, as visitors travel through the space in chronological time. The tectonic plan for the exterior structure is sections of reinforced concrete to form a wall system. The overall concept behind the museum is to create a social and educational center with a welcoming environment, while encouraging community engagement.

The ability to create and apply a thematic, functional, ecological, and tectonic response are enabled and developed. The concept formulates and adapts over the design process along with an understanding of correlating materiality and tectonics effectively with all the building’s content.

RIVER
Prompt I contributed to the shaping of floor plans for a high-rise residential tower in Chicago's South Loop during my internship in summer 2023. Collaborating closely with two senior architects, and drawing on their extensive industry know-how, I gained invaluable experience in creating spatial layouts for residences. Diving into key design factors — such as unit square footages, nuanced room size variations, neighboring bathroom and plumbing orientation, corridor coding and comfort, natural light, privacy and accessibility — shaped my understanding of and perspectives on creating environments that prioritize both functionality and aesthetic appeal. This resulted in production of construction documents that eventually were tailored for permit sets.
