. . . to Ethereal Motion, ft. Swan Lake, Act II. We are thrilled to present a program that spans classical tradition to contemporary innovation. Experience the timeless magic of Swan Lake, Act II, a cornerstone of the ballet repertoire. This iconic work, with its ethereal beauty and poignant story of love and loss, will transport you to a world of enchantment.

The evening also features a rich selection of contemporary pieces. Artistic Director Betty Kondo brings us Homeward, a moving exploration of community and connection, set to the evocative music of Future of Forestry.

We are equally excited to showcase Figment, a new ballet-forward creation by Artistic Assistant Lauren Wertz. This innovative work, set to the vibrant sounds of Power-Haus, invites us to see music brought to life through the expressive power of dance.

Finally, we are delighted to revive It’s All About..., a piece by Artistic Director Emerita Cathleen Huling.

Inspired by the remarkable artwork of the late, worldrenowned local artist, Kirk Newman, and set to the music of Mannheim Steamroller, this work offers a beautiful interplay between visual art and dance, celebrating the legacy of a beloved artist.

Established in 1982 by Jerre James and Bette Joachimi, Ballet Arts Ensemble, Inc., of Kalamazoo (BAE) is a youth ballet company that provides educational and performing opportunities for its members while perpetuating the art of dance with an emphasis in ballet. Membership in the company entitles dancers to a variety of educational experiences that include working with professional choreographers, dancers, teachers, and musicians.

BAE presents two concerts each season that include full-length ballets (The Princess and the Pea, Hansel and Gretel,The 12 Dancing Princesses, Cinderella, Peter and the Wolf,The Magical Toy Shop) and mixed repertoire performances with professional dancers and choreographers that often feature excerpts from classical ballets (Les Sylphides, Coppelia, and Swan Lake). Every other year, BAE produces a full-length Nutcracker in collaboration with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (KSO) and the Kalamazoo Children’s Chorus. The production also features professional dancers in principal roles.

BAE has performed in numerous community events (Michigan Youth Arts Festival, KSO Family Discovery and Youth Concert Series, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ Sunday Funday, and Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Concerts) and also for schools, senior residences, and local organizations. For a number of years, BAE has provided a special outreach program for children who are patients at Bronson Hospital.

Auditions Currently the oldest and largest youth ballet company in the Kalamazoo area, BAE holds open auditions each May. Dancers must be twelve years old, and girls must be on pointe. Ensemble members must take two classical ballet classes a week in addition to the weekly 4-hour Ensemble class/rehearsal block.

A Note from the Artistic Director Thank you for joining us for our second concert of the season, Ethereal Motion.Your ongoing support of these incredible young artists helps to strengthen the impact of dance in the greater Kalamazoo community.

From the dynamic energy and curiosity captured in the first half of the program to the light, ethereal beauty of the classical ballet in Act II, this performance will inspire a sense of wonder and awe. Together, we will explore purpose, meaning, and hope.

This performance also honors the lifelong achievements of local artist Kirk Newman, whose legacy will be celebrated later this year at the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts. As we all know, art brings color and vibrancy to our world which would otherwise be left dull and grey.

The Artistic Staff Betty Kondo Artistic Director

Originally from Bowie (Maryland), Betty has been a professional dancer for over 15 years.

She received her training at Maryland Youth Ballet and spent several summers participating in dance intensives throughout the country.

Betty began her professional career with Orlando Ballet and has since performed with many classical and contemporary ballet companies including Kansas City Ballet, Eugene Ballet, and Owen/ Cox Dance Group. She has competed and won high medals in the American Dance Competition as well as the Helsinki International Ballet Competition.

In addition to performing, she has over ten years of experience teaching ballet, pointe, contemporary, choreography, and conditioning.

Now in her second year as the Ensemble’s Artistic Director, Betty is thrilled to inspire the next generation of dancers to fall in love with ballet.

Lauren attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College and graduated with honors as a member of Phi Theta Kappa, earning an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Culinary Arts and Sustainability.

She was selected as BAE’s Artistic Assistant in 2021 and enjoys serving in this position.

Jerre Locke James

Founder and Artistic Director Emerita

Jerre studied ballet with Lillian Malone in Kalamazoo, with Edna McRae in Chicago, and with Robert Joffrey and Ana Roje at Ballet Russe in New York. She was chosen by Ana Roje to train and perform with Yugoslavia’s National Company. Returning to Los Angeles, she studied with E. Loring, Oleg Tupine, and Carmelita Maracci. She also danced professionally with Hollywood Bowl Dancers, Moro-Landis, and Music Circus.

Jerre holds a Master’s Degree in theater from USC. Cathleen Huling Artistic Director Emerita

Cathleen holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Marietta College (Ohio).

She grew up in Grand Rapids (Michigan) and studied with Sally Seven, soloist with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and founder of the Grand Rapids Civic Ballet. While in Grand Rapids, Cathleen was active with the Civic Theatre and summer stock’s Circle Theatre.

A teacher of ballet at Ballet Arts from 1982 to 2023, Cathleen became co-owner of the studio in 1991 until 2022. In 2001, she became Artistic Director of Ballet Arts Ensemble (BAE) after serving as performer and Ballet Mistress since 1982. Her love for ballet is reflected in BAE’s repertoire.

Her choreography has frequently been selected for performances with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, most notably The Nutcracker. Her movie choreography debut can be seen in Cherry—filmed in Kalamazoo and featured at the 2010 Saugatuck Waterfront Film Festival.

In 2016, Cathleen received the WMU Partners in Dance Community Dance Advocacy Award that celebrates significant accomplishments in advancing and supporting dance in the greater Kalamazoo area through volunteerism, artistic achievement, teaching, and administrative leadership.

Swan Lake, Act II Choreography: Traditional after Marius Petipa Music: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky At a lakeside, Prince Siegfried encounters a magnificent flock of swans. In awe, he aims his crossbow when suddenly one of the swans is transformed into a beautiful woman. It is Odette, Queen of the Swans.

The prince is captivated by her soulful countenance and starts to approach her, but she becomes frightened and turns from him.When he assures her that he means no harm, Odette reveals to him that she and her companions have been placed under a spell: by day they are condemned to take the form of swans and only at night can they regain their human shapes.This spell can only be broken if a man promises his love and remains faithful to that vow.
