Summary

This is a short story about a group of people who share the same carriage on a train. The passengers are three children (one boy and two girls) their aunt and a man (the bachelor) who is not related to any of them.

The children are restless and ask many questions while their aunt scolds them frequently. During the train ride the aunt tries to tell the children a story but they don't want to listen to her story because they are bored. Then the bachelor tells his story, which is somewhat inappropriate but quite captivating for the three children.

The bachelor tells a story about a „horribly good” girl who was invited into a Prince’s garden because she was so good. As this „horribly good” girl called Bertha walks around the garden, which is for some reason full of little pigs, she is caught and eaten by a hungry wolf.

The aunt is shocked by the story, but the children love it.

WHAT THE STUDENTS LIKED:

 I liked the garden with little pigs, and the conversation the aunt and children had about the sheep.

 I liked the unexpected ending of the story that the bachelor told the children.

 I like the storyteller because he wanted to help the aunt to calm the children down.

Comments

 I didn˙t like that the kids were pretty much annoying. I also didn˙t like the way they talked to a complete stranger.

 The story is not that bad but I don˙t like the annoying children.

 I didn˙t like the way the children treated their aunt and the batchelor.

 All things considered I think the story is not that bad.

 It is a good story.

Summary

This short story is about a mother and a daughter who met a strange old man while they were trying to get a taxi during a storm. The mother and daughter felt cold and uncomfortable because they were in the rain without an umbrella. The old man approached them and offered them his own umbrella for a small sum of money. The mother was mistrustful at first, but in the end, she agreed to a transaction. Both mother and daughter saw the old man´s strange behaviour and decided to follow him to see what he was going to do next. They saw him entering a pub, and they watched through the window inside to see what was going to happen. The old man used their money to pay for whiskey. He drank the whiskey and went out of the pub. Before he left the pub, he took somebody's umbrella out with him. In the last scene of the story, the mother and daughter saw the old man in the street selling the stolen umbrella to somebody else. After that, he went in another direction for another pub.
