 La Java Bleue In this new series of paintings Dadang Christanto continues his collaboration with the master craftsmen of East Java using the traditional paintings of the Wuku, or Javanese zodiac, The Wuku can be mapped using a complex table of references where animals and elements from nature combine for each day of the year. With the intrusion of Western culture on traditional life, Christanto is concerned that the application of skills to the zodiac tradition are being lost. It is his hope, that through exhibiting to a wider audience, a greater understanding and appreciation of this ancient tradition will be recognized and its importance upheld for future generations. Born in Tegal, Central Java in Indonesia, Christanto was eight years old when soldiers abducted his father, never to return. This wound in the artist’s life has never healed and the terror of the experience has informed his work to date. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of this fateful event. To coincide with this anniversary QUT Art Museum is dedicating a major exhibition of Christanto’s work including the installation Hujan Merah (Red Rain) 2000, and a newly created six meter painting. Tribute to Gerwani, Ninety SixtyFive Dadang Christanto. Christanto has exhibited widely in many international biennales and exhibitions, including the Biennales of Venice (2003), Jogyakarta, and CP Open Jakarta, Indonesia, both in (2003), and the first and third AsiaPacific Triennials, Brisbane (1993, 1999). His sculpture work, Heads of the North, is the major work featured in the ponds at the Nation Gallery of Australia and a major sculpture installation, They give Evidence, is part of the Art Gallery NSW collection.
