Round Table [Collaboration] Postal Collage Project

POSTAL COLLAGE PROJECT NOS. 1 THROUGH 5

SUMMER 2016

It was a humble beginning back in 2011, starting with a simple question: Would artists throughout the world be interested in collaborating to create collages, real cut-and-paste paper collages, by sending their artwork through the postal system? Could a project like this transcend potential difficulties such as language barriers, slow postal service, and differing ideas about art authorship/ownership? The resounding answer was YES! Throwing caution to the wind, Marty McCutcheon formulated a plan for what we now know as the Round Table [Collaboration] Postal Collage Project. Five years later the project continues to thrive with an ever-expanding group of international artists working collaboratively to produce astonishingly beautiful, provocative, and compelling collages that have been annually exhibited in Berkeley’s The Shuman Block, No. 3 and San Francisco’s Ramon’s Tailor. So how exactly did Marty make this happen? Essential to this project is the Internet where Marty created a website to propose the project and spell out guidelines. The only thing that significantly changed over five years was the sizable increase in numbers of participants as well as countries represented. The creation of this catalog, a very abbrieviated documentation of the project, intimates what a labor of love can offer to a world that is often plagued with headlines of terrorism and other forms of violence. Creating art collaboratively has been the focus, but equally important have been the secondary effects of forming friendships among people who may never meet in real life. For this reason Round Table [Collaboration] Postal Collage Project is a welcome antidote for our troubled times.

Postal Collage Project No. 1 The Postal-Collage Project No. 1 (20112012) was the inaugural endeavor of Round Table [Collaboration]. The project, begun in September 2011, involved fifty collaborators assembled in ten groups, ranging in age from 4 to 82, hailing from the USA, Ireland, the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, and Australia. Postal Collage Project No. 5 This year, 100 collaborators from around the globe produced 100 collages over the course of six months. Assembled in working groups of five members each, with each group arranged in a ‘circular’ sequence, participants send and receive works-in-progress by mail. Each participant is the principal author of one collage, and a contributing author of four others. Each collaborator eventually finishes the collage they started.
