Picturing Elmira 2013 The First Annual Photo Contest for Elmira College Students

Picturing Elmira College Awards Ceremony April 2, 2013

President Ron Champagne established the First Elmira College Student Photo Contest. At the awards ceremony in the lobby of the GannettTripp Library, he talked about the importance of photographs in stirring our memories and sharing our present with future generations.

FIRST PRIZE Cowles Hall is the original building of Elmira College. This photo of Cowles’ main hallway represents the path that all students have taken at Elmira College. Cowles Hall has seen many changes and renovations since 1855, a process of success and improvement. Just as students have been through changes so has Cowles. This is the building where Freshman receive their beanies and Seniors attend Commencement. The lighted hallway reflects the path that we have all taken at Elmira during our four years leading to a bright and successful future.

HONORABLE MENTION

I fell in love with Elmira College on my very first tour. Within my first few minutes on campus I entered the historic Hamilton Hall.

One of the characteristics that attracted me most was Elmira’s commitment to its history and tradition. It seemed to me like family, who consistently honored its heritage. The image I captured on film was meant to reflect the history behind Elmira College. The idea of a man kissing a woman’s hand is old-fashioned and romantic. The castle-like image of Meier Hall only adds to the ancient aura of the photograph. As I reflect on my time spent at Elmira, Dr. Meier is a pivotal component of my college experience. The image of his building in the photograph further shows how much this image is a reflection of Elmira College itself.

The photo of the braided scarves represents the supportive and collaborative environment at Elmira College.

All the different tones within the scarves represent the different people and cultures that make up Elmira College.

Everyone at Elmira College is different and yet they all form a cohesive unit while still being their own person, which is what the unbraided scarves represent. The photo also represents a student upon graduation. For example I am set to graduate in June of 2013 and when I graduate I will seriously begin my role as a responsible global citizen who will learn to fit in somewhere other than Elmira College while being my own individual person.

I will start a new braid with new people that I meet. Overall, the braid of scarves represents the people at Elmira College and the various activities that the school offers. It represents all people at Elmira College collaborating to become one cohesive unit while at the same time supporting the individual’s need to always be their own person.

Picturing Elmira College What is “Picturing Elmira College”?

The First Annual Elmira College Student Photo Contest and Exhibition Beginning January 21, 2013, all full time Elmira College students are invited to submit personal photographs that visually express the Elmira College Mission. All full time Elmira College students What are the rules?

Images should be sized 4x6 inches and of suitable subject matter for an audience of all ages. Photographs can be inexpensively printed at any photo service bureau for less than 50 cents: Walgreen’s, B&C Photo, Staples, etc. Entries will be limited to no more than five per student; prints will not be returned to the student. Students should make sure their name and contact information is clearly labeled on the back of the print.

What are the prizes? $100 First Prize; $50 Second Prize; $25 Honorable Mention When and how can I submit entries?

What are my responsibilities and rights if I win?

The first-prize winner will provide the college with a digital file of the winning image (9MB or larger) to make an enlargement that can be matted and framed for the college’s permanent collection.

The award winning student agrees to provide a statement that explains why they think their photo captures the mission of Elmira College.

The student will retain the copyright to their image, with the agreement that Elmira College may use it freely in publications now and in the future.

WHAT SHOULD I DO FIRST? 1. Read the Elmira College Mission Statement. You can find it on the EC Website: http://www.elmira.edu/about/mission 2. Ask yourself, “What photograph can I take that will be a compelling visual representation of the mission of Elmira College?” Each student will have a different interpretation of what it means to be an Elmira College student. Are your feelings reflected in a certain building? A certain class? A club, friends, dorm room, dining hall? Participating in traditions like Mountain Day or meeting more informally in a library study group? The photograph you submit should represent your personal interpretation of the mission of Elmira College.

3. Capture your feelings in a photograph and have it printed as a 4x6” image. Name and contact information should be clearly labeled on the back of entry and sent through campus mail to Jan Kather or dropped off at her office in the Gannett-Tripp Library Terrace Level.

4. Visit the Nathenson Computer Center after winter break to see the exhibition of your photo submissions. All photos submitted before February 15 will be exhibited in the Nathenson Computer Center for the entire month of March.

5.If your entry wins, you will supply the college with a large digital file (9MB) and a statement about why your photo captures the mission of Elmira College.
