Larry Clark has been a rebel from day one with his photography and movies. He is a director who doesn’t conform to what people expect to see—he creates films about the outsiders of youth culture. Clark has portrayed skateboarders, hustlers, adolescent boys and drug dealers who could only think of sex, drugs and murder. In his old age, Clark is still shocking us with these stories that haven’t changed much from his own youth. Even in today’s society these films are banned from mainstream theaters. Under the Mattress Film Festival provides an introduction package to media and special guests. Reflecting Larry Clark’s most popular films and his extreme passion for the misguided; this package is delivered in a shotgun case, which contains posters, promo items, matchbook condoms, DVD’s of the films, a schedule of events and a skateboard deck. The website and app support the materials to provide information about the festival. It is guaranteed to shock you and bring back memories of your rebellious childhood.

The Aladdin Lamp Company was in it’s prime in the early 1900’s. It was time for the company to shed new light on the world by introducing innovative products and designs. The project allowed for me to explore the history of the company and to focus on the quality of the products they had provided to their customers. This investigation allowed for me to create a new identity which reflected them in a modern society. Designing a new identity along with a stationary system gave new life to a dedicated company. Designing packaging for their new line of light bulbs along with control modules showed how the new brand system could be used across their product line. Each of these designs reflect the new Aladdin company and their goal to be a leading force in the lighting world.

To experiment with an idea is to create conditions that will affect variation and influence the variation under observation. This is critical to note because this entire project explored multiple variations in regard to Type Experimentation. I developed this entire project around the color orange, which I think is an overlooked color that adds much vibrancy into our daily lives. I investigated different topics connected to the color orange and identified nine areas which were then developed into visual designs. Words where then chosen that linked to the topic; an example would be the word Sweet, which was created using pieces of candy corn. Each typographic solution connected the word and visual to the color orange, which allowed for the message to translate through experimental typography.

ENJOY WHAT YOU

Create . PIE MAKES EVERYONE

HAPPY LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON

I love pie, so what better place to create than a bakery which only serves pie. You can do so much within the pie crust, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to create design that supported this bakery delight. The project started with the bakery being called I Like Pie, but it was quickly realized that PIE was the perfect name, simple and sweet. The essence of PIE would first be introduced in the logo and then translated into uniforms. I created a colorful apron that would be worn by staff, which supported the color scheme inside the store and throughout the packaging materials. The boxes for each pie, including one-slice packages, were created to support the system. These colorful boxes used the color system, but were also used to identify which type of pie was inside. The PIE brand was then transformed through the website allowing all the delicious pies to be displayed.

The history of photography is truly remarkable. As with many inventions, the process of capturing an image on paper was discovered by trial and error. The outcome required many chemicals and different processes to achieve an image, but understanding how light affects the subject is still investigated today. Imogen Cunningham, at a very young age, found photography because of her interest in the sciences. She was mesmerized by the process and the chemical changes that could occur to create beautiful portraits and still life. With her understanding of chemistry and her own technique, she created a series of botanical succulent prints, which I have highlighted in the book, Masters of the Camera. Giving the viewer a perspective of her use of lighting and focus allowed me to show the details and crispness within her photography. Each spread titillates the viewer by focusing on her ability to notice details not normally seen with the naked eye. Her use of perspective is clearly evident, which I designed into the typography.

Many local bands are trying to make it big in the music industry. They cover their favorite artists and try and make a name for themselves by playing in local festivals, bars and county fairs. One of the downfalls for most local bands is that they do this in their spare time, not their day job. So putting together a website isn’t their priority to making great music. This was my opportunity to help them have a presence on the web with their own site. I interviewed the band to find out how they viewed themselves. I then went to different concerts and talked with fans and local patrons to see their perspective. This allowed me to design a website that reflected who they were and where they were going with their music. The site is fresh, fun and gives the fans an opportunity to stay in touch with Revolution Theory by promoting show dates along with videos of their performances. You might even catch a few fans on the web-page with their favorite bass player.

This project allowed me to research a number of artists who influenced graphic design throughout history, but none were as dynamic as Jean-Michel Basquiat. I grew up just outside New York City in the 70’s and I wanted to connect to an artist who impacted my generation. Researching his work and especially his graffiti, which defined his art early on, allowed me to understand who this shy well breed man was. The Beautiful People allows you to enter Soho in the late 60’s and helps to identity the city which was being overrun by street art, music, POP art, movies and drugs. The design of the book allows the viewer to be drawn into Basquiat’s world and experience the culture around him. This book is the story of the first recognized black artist, SAMO and shares some of his amazing work.

Jean-michel basquiat

New York Times Review this minutely reported book is as much a portrait of the frenzied, prodigal new York art world of the 1980s as it is a biography of jean-michel Basquiat, who died of a drug overdose at age 27 in 1988. Basquiat, one of very few african american artists to acquire an international reputation, left a thick web of dealers, collectors, friends, lovers, paintings, drawings, and used syringes behind him. editor janine susz seems to have unblinkingly interviewed or examined them all. while she duly registers Basquiat’s sad childhood, with his unstable Puerto Rican mother and punishing Haitian father, she doesn’t make much of the deeper veins of sorrow and self-destruction that may have motivated the artist and informed his art. Rather, she allows his celebrity, which whisked him from street urchin to art star, to be the central trajectory of this story. the warhol protégé would probably approve, as he was the primary obliterator of his own psychological depths, throwing away his short, phenomenally productive life in the edgy club and drug scene of downtown manhattan. the miracle is that Basquiat was so good, and so serious, an artist, surrounded as he was by hype and cash. Hoban’s book is a fluid, intricate, authoritative dissection of a time, a place, and—almost—a person.

The best of the free summer festivals in San Francisco, CA, Stern Grove Festival has provided exceptional concerts for over seventy-five years. From Soul, to fresh R and B, these series bring a whole new audience to artists like never before. This summer series hosted Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Jazz Mafia Symphony and Aaron Neville along with many other talented artists. I focused on these three headline acts as they were the most popular in the lineup, and found that working with a circular design let me play with a typographic solution to show how their music resonates. Their vibrant beats and methodical tone allow for the letters to dance around the page, creating severed letters, and showing that the music is powerful and isn’t constrained to just the stage. The lively and explosive designs brought new audience members to their performance by showing the power of their music through typographic design.

Smartbase is a new product introduced for the building and construction industry. The base allows the contractor to set up his tools, in this case a table saw, anywhere on the job site. The Smartbase creates a safer work environment. The adjustment options in the legs allow users to connect to a table which then creates it’s own working surface. Defining the audience for the new product and creating a visual brand was the challenge to put Smartbase on the market. The Smartbase brand was designed along with a brochure that would educate the purchaser on the new product. Posters were also developed, which would be observed at locations where contractors purchase their equipment.

The Binder thesis project originated as a solution for a problem I was experiencing. I love to be organized, but with all the appliances in my home it’s difficult to keep track of all my paperwork. In an average home, there are over 25 appliances, electronic devices and mechanical systems. The average home has up to three service calls a year, and they can be from multiple service providers. Tracking all of the paperwork for warranty companies, service providers, and recalls can be a huge task. Binder created a resource that would enable homeowners the opportunity to access information about all of their products right from their smart phone. Having the ability to look up the part number for their water filter system, or access an email for a service provider would make a repair or a replacement more efficient. Binder is about convenience, for the important information many times forgotten. No more storing paperwork in a box, or filing cabinet, just scan your receipt, and your UPC code and you will be connected to your product. It’s as easy as that. Binder can also sends the manufacture registration information for your new products to keep you updated on recalls or product upgrades. Binder is the little black book for your home.

TO MY HUSBAND

144

What can I say, but thank you for helping me get through the long nights and missed dinners. The patience that you have is enormous and I’m forever grateful for you. You traveled on this journey with me, proofed my work, critiqued my projects and supported me to keep going and do my best. You are my better half and I wouldn’t have been able to complete this without you.

TO MY KIDS

This has been a long journey and as you have grown over the last 6 years, I hope that you have seen that in the end it’s worth the fight. I appreciate you eating pizza and wings 3 nights in a row and knowing that I was sitting in my car at soccer practice working on homework. I can only hope that you have seen me at my best, achieving a goal that I can only hope for you to achieve someday. Love the choices you make in life and know that even with a few sacrifices, the reward is exhilarating.

TO EVELYN

You surprised us all with your arrival but gave me the greatest gift by showing me I needed to slow down and appreciate my family first no matter what. The giggles we have shared have a special place in my heart and you will always be my beautiful granddaughter.

TO MY FRIENDS

Thank you for allowing me to miss the picnics and road trips. Thank you for your support and allowing me to vent when needed. Letting me use you as subjects and getting your feedback every step of the way made all this more fun. Heidi, Dana, and Kathy you will always be my design hero’s. Heidi and Jessica, thank you for your photography guidance—lighting isn’t my cup of tea.

TO MY MOM

Mom, thank you for always encouraging me, you are with me always and you have made me who I am today.
