WHAT IS PHOTO MANIPULATION? Photo manipulation is where a photographer will edit a photo to create a desired look. These looks are often fantasy like, and can not be recreated in the real world. Most photographers use Photoshop to create these desired effects. Photo manipulation can be incorporated into both fine art and commercial work.
PHOTO MANIPULATION TECHNIQUES Double exposure Double exposure photography is quite a common technique to use when manipulating images. This technique is where you layer two images on top of each other. This is a common technique that is often done with portraits. This technique can also be created with film in the darkroom. Some film cameras allow you to create double exposures straight from the camera. However, a lot do not have this setting. Therefore, to use this technique you would have to place two images on top of each other in the enlarger, and then expose the photographic paper.

TYE MARTINEZ Tye Martinez is a Photographer from Washington in the USA. He mainly works within the fine art genre of photography. His work often includes quite saturated colours, with a hint of neon to make his work even more exciting. I feel that a lot of his work also has a lot of horror themes within it. Also, a lot of his imagery feels quite isolating or scary. He also incorporates a lot of levitation and duplication in his work. My favourite aspect of Martinez’s work has to be the colours he uses in his work. I also like how the neon stands out in his work. I think in my own work, I would like to try and include some neon aspects.
ANALYSING TYE MARTINEZ’S WORK Rule of thirds.
Leading lines.
The subject has been placed in the centre of the rule of thirds grid to ensure that the viewers attention goes straight to the subject. The leading lines also helps to strengthen this aspect of the image.
These circles draw your attention to the subject effectively. I also like how there is a neon effect used on these lines.
TYE MARTINEZ’S WORK
NATALIE SHAU Natalie Shau is a mixed media photographer from Vilnius. She does a lot of work for musicians, bands, theatre and fashion. She creates her own photo manipulations by using her digital illustration skills. I like the colour palettes she uses in her work. She tends to use a lot of browns, blacks and reds and I like how both her photography and illustrations work together to create an image that seems real, yet also fantasy-like at the same time.
ANALYSING NATALIE SHAU’S WORK Gradual grayscale filter. I like how the image is darker at the top, and it gets gradually lighter as you get towards the bottom.
Negative space. The photographer has included a lot of negative space to ensure the subject is the main focal point of the image.

XI HUANG Xi Huang is a photographer from Hangzhou, China who does a lot of fine art and experimental photography. A lot of her work includes stretching and distorting the image. I like their work as I think the distortion makes the black and white images more interesting.
ANALYSING XI HUANG’S WORK Distortion. To make this simple portrait more interesting, the photographer has distorted the image. This also helps to blend the image together.
Double exposure. It seems the photographer has created a double exposure effect by layering two images on top of each other. They have distorted the image to blend them both together.

HAYASHI NATSUMI Hayashi Natsumi is a photographer who takes images of herself levitating while capturing the everyday life in Japan. She is located in Saitama in Japan and studied at Rikkyo University. I like her work as it is very creative, yet simple. I also like how we get to see the everyday life in Japan at the same time of admiring the creativity of her work.
ANALYSING HAYASHI NATSUMI’S WORK Levitation + fast shutter speed. Hayashi Natsumi has used levitation in her work, and she has used it here in this image also. The use of levitation makes it feel that the subject is feeling free, or on top of the world. Duplication. I like how Hayashi Natsumi has duplicated the image of her levitating and has used it in the reflection of the puddle.
In order to get this effect, I think Hayashi Natsumi would have had to use a fast shutter speed to freeze the movement.
HAYASHI NATSUMI’S WORK
LJUBODRAG ANDRIC Ljubodrag Andric is a photographer from Yugoslavia who has been interested in photography since the age of 15. In 1988, he moved from architectural photography to commercial advertising photography and began to work in Italy. I like his work because he can turn a simple image of a product and make it his own and make it more interesting to look at.
ANALYSING LJUBODRAG ANDRIC’S WORK Warped shapes. Andric has warped the shape of the milk to create hearts, which fit the background colour. This shows there was a lot of thought put into this shot, and a lot of technical skill. Movement / fast shutter speed. This moment of the product being poured into a glass being frozen by a fast shutter speed creates more movement in the image, therefore making it more interesting to look at.
LJUBODRAG ANDRIC’S WORK
OMI KIM Omi Kim is a graphic designer and photographer from Japan. He has created his own company that combines his talent in photography and graphic design and has been in the industry for over 10 years now.
Omi Kim’s work stands out to me the most as I like the colours he uses, and the amount of neon that is used. I also like how well the neon contrasts against his very dark imagery.

Desaturated image.
I like this double exposed image. I like how well it blends into the shadows of the image. I also like how the two images used contrast well against each other.
I like how the studio image is quite desaturated, and is very flat as this gives the opportunity for the bright, neon photo to stand out.
