TAKE A WALK THROUGH SOMERTON’S PAST

Somerton has a rich history. We possibly gave our name to the county of Somerset and were reputed to be the Royal Capital of Ancient Wessex.

Nine Romano-British farmsteads have been located in the area around Somerton which was a rich agricultural hinterland to the Roman town at Ilchester. King Ina (or Ine), 689 to 726, shaped the early history of Wessex. Our Primary school, King Ina C of E Academy bears his name. The earliest written reference to the town is in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which records that in 733 the King of Wessex,

Æthelheard lost control of Somerton to Æthelbald, King of Mercia. In 949 the Witan, a local parliament, met in Somerton. In the Domesday Book of 1086 Somerton was listed as ‘Sumertone’ – or summer farmstead.

Market Place In 1255 Somerton was granted the right to hold weekly markets. The Buttercross (above), was built by the Stawell family in 1673 to provide cover for the sale of butter, cheese and milk. It is now a Grade II ancient monument.

Behind it stands the Old Town Hall, a Grade II listed building built in the J

17th century as a market hall and assembly rooms, but now houses ACEarts gallery and café (p16). Opposite is the 17th century Market House now home to Alfredo’s (p22). Both The Buttercross Tearooms and Alfredo’s provide outdoor tables (top, above).

In 1986 Somerton became the town of Étaples for the BBC series The Monocled Mutineer. TÉLÉGRAPH can still be seen painted on the exterior of The Globe Inn.

Also in Market Place is the Portland stone War Memorial, dedicated in 1921 to commemorate Somertonians who died in WWI and subsequently WWII, including those in the bombing of the Cow & Gate milk factory in the town.

Just off Market Place is the beautiful church of St Michael and All Angels. Dating from the 13th century it is now

designated as a Grade I listed building. The Red Lion was a large coaching inn dating from the Middle Ages, rebuilt by the Earl of Ilchester in 1768. Closed in the mid 1990s it is now private houses. Next door is Freeman House and Old Bell House, both 17th century.

Broad Street is lined with lime trees planted in 1865. Home to the former Free Grammar School founded 1672, and also the three-storey Collar Factory which employed at least 100 people from 1860 until its closure in 1935.

Cow Square Cattle were kept here prior to auction. Here you’ll find The Old Hall and two large town houses, Hopefield and Donisthorpe, the latter built in 1770. The cast iron Coronation Fountain was erected in 1902 for the coronation of Edward VII (top right).

New Street used to be the main road into Somerton and is home to many fine tall houses built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cockspurs at the end of the street was a former cock-fighting pit. North Street Scott-Gould House was built in 1866 to house elderly ladies. The Old Armoury dates from the late 18th century. No 5 and Hogarth Cottage are both 17th century. Across the road is The Lynch (p29), a fine Georgian house with a lake and grounds, built in 1815. West Street Leavers’ Court dating back to 1500. Hext Almshouses (above), built in 1626 by Sir Edward Hex. They are still let to pensioners of the parish today.

Stationery House

A quick coffee with Malcolm Adams, owner of the longestablished independent stationers in Market Place.

What inspired you to open? I worked for WHSmith for many years managing several branches. In 2018 my wife Sally and I bought Stationery House. I had always dreamed of having my own business. We also have two new stores in Clevedon and Winscombe. Clevedon being run by my middle son Daniel.

What kind of things do people come in for? Stamps, stationery and greetings cards obviously, though they will often leave with a jigsaw, some art supplies, or a leather purse! We also offer photo printing and photocopying.

Your favourite item in stock? Pens of every sort! I’m also very proud of the book section we have created, especially the children’s titles, local books and unique walking maps of the area. We can order books too.

Proudest moment? In 2024 we were awarded Best independent retailer of greetings cards; south, at the Retail Excellence Awards.

What do you wish more people knew about you? The amount of time spent on product selection! We strive to be a traditional retail shop where you will find items not easily available elsewhere.

Best part of owning Stationery House?

My amazing staff – we all go the extra mile. I may own the business but it belongs to our customers. I’m open to suggestions about what we stock – as an independent we have that flexibility.

We chat to Mel Pester, who took over Behind Clouds ladies’ shoe shop in 2023 when the previous owner retired. Well established with a loyal following, it’s not uncommon for ladies to travel for hours to visit!

What’s the best part of running Behind Clouds? Meeting so many incredible women each day, hearing their stories and having inspiring conversations, all with a lot of laughter! I also love the creativity of window dressing and have had many compliments on my seasonal efforts!

Most popular items?

Trainers – I select versatile, comfortable, feminine designs that look absolutely gorgeous with dresses.

Common misconceptions?

I think people assume that a small independent shop, with incredible brands, will charge higher prices, and it’s simply not true! To many people’s surprise we are very competitive. As a bonus we offer great customer service and the chance to try on your choices in comfort. We also offer free evening appointments, for customers who would like to match new shoes with a special occasion outfit.

Any amusing moments? I created a Wimbledoninspired window display, complete with grass and hanging tennis balls. A local Labrador constantly tried to break in whilst on his walk!

Craft House Chocolate

One of Somerton’s not-to-bemissed businesses is Craft House Chocolate on New Street. It was founded in 2017 by former pastry chef, Nettie Oakley-Prior.

Partner Tammy brought her design and organisational expertise to the business in 2019, designing the branding, packaging and artwork.

Nettie discovered the wonders of chocolate while training as a pastry chef in Dorset. Having tasted and worked with most of the chocolate brands that were available in the industry, she decided that it was time to explore the possibility of making her own chocolate

from the bean.

In January 2018, Nettie started sourcing cacao beans from around the world. From these she makes her award winning chocolate bars –winning her first award in 2019.

Also in 2019 they opened Craft House Chocolate in New Street, Somerton, Somerset. A small cacao house which incorporates a workshop/ training area, a production kitchen and a small retail shop.

Nettie is responsible for ‘all things chocolate’ including regular workshops and group talks.

Since then, the business has grown

FIVE MINUTES WITH…

Nettie Oakley-Prior

What do people come in looking for most often? People come in because they love chocolate! Whether it’s high quality bean-to-bar chocolate, a thoughtful gift, or just a little indulgence for themselves, our customers are always excited to explore what we have. Many are curious about how we make things or want advice on dessert ideas. And depending on the season, they might leave with a luxury hot chocolate or freshly rolled ice cream.

What’s a typical day at Craft House Chocolate? No two days are the same! You might find me stone grinding fresh chocolate or tempering it to make bars and filled treats. I’m often behind the counter serving customers, but I might also be running a tasting event,

giving a chocolate-making demonstration, or hosting a truffle workshop.

Do you have a favourite item in stock right now?

Absolutely! I’m really excited about our new range of artisanal filled chocolate bars. I’m always experimenting with flavours, but right now, the peanut brittle & caramel bar is my top pick.

What do you wish people knew about your shop?

Even though we’re tucked away on a quiet side street in Somerton, we’re absolutely worth finding! We make everything by hand using high-quality ingredients – no cutting corners by replacing cocoa butter with cheaper fats like some of the big companies do. Our focus is always on craftsmanship and flavour.

What’s your favourite thing about living and working in Somerton?

What I love most about Somerton is how life just slows down here. There’s a lovely sense of community and a calm, quiet atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere. We feel very supported and are proud to call this place home. It’s a little pocket of peace, and Tammy and I feel lucky to be part of it.

The Etsome Arms & Offy

Sharon and Pete opened The Etsome Arms in 2019 to showcase the brilliance of local brewers. The husband and wife team’s next move was to open the Etsome Offy, just two doors down.

How did you get started?

Pete: It was an accident really. I met the previous owner, we shook hands and I came home and declared to Sharon, “we’re opening a pub!” – and we’ve not looked back since. The off-licence opened in 2022.

Typical day in the Offy?

Sharon: Every day is different, and you never know who or what is going to walk through the door!

What I love is talking to and helping our customers, also not forgetting having the space to work on my crazy window display ideas!

What are ‘Petey’s Picks’?

Sharon: Every Thursday when Pete arrives at the bar, there is a vital job to do –Petey’s Pick Of The Week! Pete tastes a (small!), sample of the new 8 beers for the week. We then post the selection to Facebook and Instagram with Pete’s notes.

Best part about running businesses in Somerton?

Pete: The focus on the local provenance of our beers, wines, ciders and spirits, but the big benefit for us is the friends we’ve made and the connection we have with our community. Locals, visitors (and their dogs), are all very welcome. We’re passionate about helping everyone to discover Somerton!

ALFREDO’S

EVERYTHING YOU LOVE ABOUT ITALIAN FOOD WITH A PINCH OF SOMERSET

HANDMADE sharing pastas, gourmet pizzas, beautiful Sunday lunches, a bar filled with chilled beers, delicate Italian whites, bold Italian reds and the drinks you would expect to enjoy on the perfect Italian holiday; Aperol spritz, Limoncello, Campari and Prosecco…

This is the essence of Alfredo’s restaurant and bar housed in the stunning 17th century Market House in Market Place, Somerton.

Where it all began

At just sixteen the culinary story of Chef Patron Henry Osmond began in this very building. Henry started working in the then ‘Market Bar and Bistro’ washing up and waiting on tables. In quieter moments Bill the

owner would teach him some cooking skills that sparked an interest for life.

Coming full circle

Fifteen years later after having trained and cooked in some of the finest restaurants that Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London and South Petherton have to offer, Henry has returned with his wife Ruth and son Alfred to the town he grew up in.

Alfredo’s is named after young Alfred and is inspired by the wonderful Italian holidays the family have shared. Now firmly settled back in the rolling hills of Somerset, Henry is pouring all of his passion, experience and know-how into creating a truly local restaurant, deli, bakery and bar. J

A relaxed atmosphere

The restaurant combines the history of the original 17th centry building with contemporary touches, including a stunning green tiled floor and a lightfilled atrium with oversized rattan lampshades. The tables are simply styled meaning guests can relax and enjoy great cooking and great service. By night candles are lit and a more cosy, intimate atmosphere is created.

Made to share Alfredo’s take the finest local produce and turn it into delicious sharing plates. The menu is inspired by Cicchetti – Venetian small plates similar to Spanish tapas. This gives you the chance to explore what we do by

ordering multiple dishes to share around the table. We recommend ordering 2-3 dishes per person.

Sunday Lunch

On Sundays we like to keep things a little more traditional – Sunday roast with a pinch of Italian flair. Start with a sharing plate and then choose from porchetta, roast sirloin of beef (with Yorkshire puddings), or ‘Decadence’ our combination of both, roasted whole sole or taleggio risotto. Finish with our panna cotta, tiramisu, rice pudding or cheese selection.

Children’s menu

Simple food tried and tested by Alfred. From our little bambino to yours!

What inspired you to open the restaurant?

I managed to use cooking as a skill to travel the world and ended up working in four different countries, gaining experiences, trying new things that I now feel have helped shape what we want Alfredo’s to be.

Best part of running a local business here?

It’s in my hometown which obviously brings a certain extra pressure but also a higher level of reward than I would potentially feel elsewhere. Serving my old dinner ladies, friend’s parents, friend’s children, school mates and people I’ve seen about the town my whole life is a wholesome feeling! We have some incredibly loyal customers, and they probably don’t realise how much their regular visits mean to us.

How has the restaurant changed since opening. We are a lot busier than when we first opened which is a very good sign!

We’ve added breakfast, happy hours, a deli and our very popular themed nights since opening. We aim to create as many reasons to visit Alfredo’s as possible. From coffee and pastries from our bakery –eat in or takeaway – to sipping delicious cocktails and eating handmade pasta or sourdough pizzas in the restaurant in the evening. We also offer a takeaway option for pizzas.

What do you wish more people knew about you? One thing we don’t shout about often enough is how local our produce is. Lots of the vegetables we use are from the nearby village of Pitney and the town of Langport, plus of course Somerton itself. Our pasta is made on site and everything is freshly baked daily for the bakery. The cider and ales are super local too.

Memorable moment?

We hosted our first wedding party last summer. At incredibly short notice we helped a couple flying in from New York to organise a celebration at Alfredo’s. All done over Zoom after their plans had been changed. I’m pleased to say we nailed it! It’s something we would like to do more of – though maybe with a little more notice!

It has been said that there was a castle on the site of The White Hart – sadly that isn’t true. However, there are some very thick walls which suggest there may have been a gaol. There’s a small blocked up window, (see the old postcard opposite), where King John was reported to have escaped from the gaol!

THE WHITE HART

A STUNNING BOUTIQUE HOTEL, RESTAURANT AND BAR WITH 15TH CENTURY ORIGINS

OUR BEAUTIFULLY renovated inn, with eight en-suite bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, serves outstanding local food in the heart of Somerton.

We’re open all day for teas and coffee, a quick drink, a snack or a delicious meal which you can enjoy beside the roaring woodburner, or alfresco in the charming courtyard or peaceful garden. Local craft beers and regularly changing ales, plus West Country ciders can be found behind the bar. There’s a glorious wine list, a fine gin selection and incredible cocktails from classic to cutting-edge.

We are super-dog-friendly at The White Hart, and our four-legged companions are welcome in the bar, outside terrace and garden and in all

our stylish bedrooms. We welcome children and have a kids’ menu for them to choose from or they can choose smaller versions of dishes on the main menu.

The case of the headless hart

The wooden white hart was in situ when Secretary to the Clark & Welsh Collar Factory, Thomas Baker, was pictured (above), in the early 1900s. The white hart survived until 2005 when he lost his head and was removed. Luckily he was found languishing in a shed and after a little rejuvenation, he was put back where he belongs – albeit he now faces left to right, (rather than towards the church), as the porch had been shortened and he wouldn’t fit! J

The current building has been added to many times. Through the front door the oldest section is on the left-hand side and dates from the 15th century. On the right-hand side there is a 17th century section and then as you go back through the building it is mainly 19th century.

The most historic part of our restaurant offers an exclusive and versatile space to host gatherings, celebrations, wakes, and events. Overlooking the secluded courtyard, it’s a light and airy space.

Local ingredients

Our relaxed restaurant uses the finest local ingredients to serve unfussy, seasonal fresh food. The menu is

overseen by Tom Blake, Executive Chef, alongside Head Chef, Ash Brill. The White Hart Sunday roasts are legendary! We serve a sensational and hearty Sunday menu, from midday through to 9pm. Our fabulous homemade pizzas are freshly baked in our wood-fired oven. Takeaway pizzas are available daily from 12pm-9pm every day of the week.

Cosy rooms

Each of our eight en-suite rooms is unique and designed to provide a cosy haven. All bedrooms have a generous king or super king size bed, crisp Egyptian cotton bedding, Roberts dab radios, tea & coffee making facilities, water, Ubiety bath products, Smart
