The LookBook started as a simple ad campaign to promote the DollBaby brand. As production took way, the perilous times Africans in the diaspora often experience were front and center, as we dawned another year of contentious elections, police brutality and economic in justice. In the midst of this turmoil, I found myself mesmerized we were able to capture beauty at all. For the first time, I really began to understand “Black beauty” and how it is the root of so many things and a precious gift to be celebrated. Black people all over the globe are often going through hurt and disappointment. Yet, we “very rarely” look our journey. Instead of carrying our heads in dread and sorrow, we magically absorb the smallest glimpse of light and exude luminous rays of strength, triumph and beauty to the world around us. We adapt quickly, steady our souls and find the will to survive. We come in a myriad of shapes, colors, hues, tones and sizes….. We are truly a magnificent people! However, more often than not, our beauty is not celebrated in this way. Our beauty is appropriated, regulated, marginalized and ridiculed, but very rarely celebrated. With this in mind, we decided to go beyond the concept of just another marketing campaign and created the /mī/ Beauty LookBook. The goal of the LookBook is to celebrate the multifaceted beauty of black women and offer our small contribution to the documentation of our lives legacies bravery and beauty year after year. Through positive reinforcement and affirmation we hope to create something inspiring, motivating and commemorative for everyone to enjoy.
