What Does “Home” Mean for Omari?

(October 2016) I'm glad because I helped build my own home…. It’s a nice neighborhood and it’s a safe neighborhood.”

Meet Omari, she’s a bright rising star and student leader at Harmony public schools in Houston, and thinks her Houston Habitat home is awesome! “I like my backyard. It’s where we have a trampoline and cookouts.” One of the things she also liked was helping out at the Houston Food Bank while earning her Habitat home. “It was fun helping others.” So what’s she planning next? “A pizza party!” so she can invite her friends over.

1,000 new homeowners

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Affordable housing is the foundation for reducing poverty and achieving economic growth with the potential to positively impact a wider range of larger societal issues.

According to a recent report from Habitat for Humanity International, at least eight out of ten Americans and Canadians agree that “having affordable, stable housing contributes to public health, community safety, economic growth and education.”

It stands to reason that Houston Habitat be at the forefront in not only providing affordable housing, but to equip new homeowners with the knowledge to be able to keep and maintain their home for the long term.

It is important because of kids like Omari, who looks forward to pizza parties and playing on her trampoline in her own back yard. It is important for dads like Jose, who used his sweat equity hours as family time, “working together towards our goal.”

Home is where families build their foundations, and where siblings create strong bonds that carry them out into the world. It is where families get to know one another and watch out for one another. A home is the foundation of community. Millard Fuller, co-founder of Habitat for Humanity said it best: “A house is to a family what soil is to a plant. A plant needs to be rooted. A family is like that. If a family is not rooted, it will not flourish. But once a family is well-rooted, all kinds of wonderful things will begin to happen.”

With a little help, we all have the potential to stand on our own (June 2016) “The best things in life are the people we love- and the home that shelters them.” A shout out to everyone who made Houston Habitat for Humanity’s 1000th Home dedication possible! Special congratulations to José and Isabel Loredo Morales who put in the hard work, muscle and hours to make their dreams happen.

The Morales family and Houston Habitat for Humanity celebrated this milestone with a rare dedication at the Morales new home on Friday May 20th in Houston’s Harrell Park. Big thanks to the Chevron Build Team for working right alongside the Morales family.

Chevrons Joni Baird and Hakim Johnson helped honor them on their dedication day.

“Right now, I just want to enjoy our home,” said Morales. Jose and Isabel had been living in a small, cramped apartment with their daughter, and granddaughter. The time was right to get a home, and Jose had learned about the opportunity through Habitat.

Jose said it was a great experience including the 300 sweat equity hours! I felt like a family working together towards our goal.”

After José first walked through his home, he felt overwhelmed with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

It’s just amazing. The home is perfect for us.”

Meet Priscilla (Sept 2016) just knowing that we’ll have our own home and set a foundation for my kids is overwhelming.

Priscilla is so excited that now she’s able to give her son and daughter a new home in Houston’s Harrell Park.

While we were working at the Food Bank, my son loved it. He told me mommy, I'm a working man now!

Priscilla and her 8 year old son volunteered their time at the Food Bank to earn part of the 300 sweat equity hours required for their Habitat home. Volunteering at the Houston Habitat Restore or Houston Food Bank is often a special time of bonding, laughing and sharing for families. We celebrated a special home dedication block party with Priscilla and 4 other Houston families this summer in Harrell Park!

The reality, writes Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, is that if children don’t live in decent homes, the odds of their staying healthy plummet. If they’re not healthy, they don’t get educated; and if they don’t get educated, they don’t get decent jobs, meaning they won’t be able to care for their families.

Through shelter we empower. “it is hard to argue that housing is not a fundamental human need. Decent, affordable housing should be basic right for everybody in this country.

The reason is simple: without stable shelter, everything else falls apart.”

how we impact global tithes Habitat for Humanity’s tithe program supports carefully chosen building and shelter projects that provide housing in the world’s poorest places.

The funds allow families to stand on their own and build stronger, more stable communities.

Each local affiliate is expected, though not required, to tithe 10 percent of its undesignated cash donations to Habitat International to be used for building projects.

Habitat affiliates who want to support or partner with our international development programs channel undesignated funds to their country of choice through our U.S. Habitat for Humanity International tithe department.

Tithe is one of the most effective ways US habitat affiliates can support our ministry overseas.

Houston Habitat is one of Haiti’s Tithe partners.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, with 58.5% of the population living on less that US $2.42 per day. Political instability, food shortages, unemployment, natural disasters and a lack of basic infrastructure have kept most Haitians locked in a cycle of poverty for generations.

Access to housing is equally desperate.

Before the 2010 earthquake, Haiti already faced a severe shortage of houses.

meet volunteer Joel Howard (March 2016) “When you handed over the keys to them – it’s powerful. It’s a life changer.”

Habitat volunteer Joel Howard has been giving his time and effort for 10-years to build homes for Habitat “every family”.

What kept him coming back to volunteer at Habitat every year was simple… “It was seeing the emotion of the families – the moms and kids that just needed some help, a leg up.”

Howard has been involved in the volunteer coordination program for over 10 years. He said that it was the dedication ceremonies that really “hooked” him. You see the emotion of it, the reality of that family you work side –by-side with; the sweat they put into their homes.

It’s a win all around. You could feel the power of god in place. It was just awesome.” He said his childhood and background helped him uniquely understand the families reaching out to Houston habitat for humanity.

I was adopted at birth. I know how much blessing I received in this life. That gives me compassion – that gives me compassion for those on the fringe that need that support. I guess I’ve always been compassionate for people in need.”

So what’s inspired him the most about the Houston Habitat experience? The people side of it. You’re happy because you made a difference in just one day. It’s powerful.”

New partnerships were created with David Weekly Homes, which now provide donations from their model homes that generate additional revenue to assist with our mission.

“Even the little projects we were doing in the Huston Habitat Restore indirectly affected other people.

Sara and Sophia learned a lot this summer as teen interns for the Houston habitat restore.

Sara came away with a deeper understanding of how Habitat works in the community. The three things families say are the most important are health, wealth and education. By having a good and long lasting home, families can achieve the things they want much easier!�

Toni Jackson celebrates birthday at

#womenbuild We see the difference made in people’s lives former Houston Habitat board member and general counsel Toni Jackson celebrated her birthday in a truly unique way—inviting a dozen girlfriends to women build! She worked right alongside Habitat homeowner Chandra Winn to build her home in Harrell Park. Toni first got involved with Houston Habitat for Humanity with Jimmy Carter build 1999.. I can do something to give back nd see the real results of it.” Habitat for Humanity ignited her passion to give back in a meaningful way, and she forged that dedication into a career.

My volunteer world is a life intersection with my professional world.” Jackson is a formidable force in Houston affordable housing and community development. She had more that 20 years of real estate law experience in both the private and public sector. Toni shared just how critical it is to have that labor of love—volunteering for the cause that you truly care about. Her volunteerism for Houston Habitat is a natural extension of her work and her passion.
