Janetha Richard American Artist New Orleans, LA (1973) Janetha Richard is a contemporary visual artist who lives and works in Houston, Texas. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, her colorful paintings and distinctive style emanates joy and soul through abstract expression. Heavily influenced by pop culture, music and fashion, Richard intermingles these ideas alongside the African and Creole culture of her home town of New Orleans. Her work presents picturesque and bold compositions featuring afro-centric figures complemented by brilliant color and whimsical elements of graphic design. Richards' creative approach blends traditional techniques with modern applications to explore contemporary subject matter. The goal is to tell an alternative story [my story] about the black experience.” and I welcome you to join me on this visual journey.” As a child Janetha has always been known for both her innate creativity and entrepreneurism. From a young age she believed, “You can create anything; once you see it in your mind.” her artistic journey began at an early age, when she would spend her free time tracing and drawing the characters from the Sunday paper comics. Later as a young teen growing up in the heyday of hiphop; Janetha would routinely draw character and graffiti on her friends clothing to earn extra money. Primarily a self taught artist, Richard studied studio art at the university of new orleans and black art history at the university of new Orleans. Here is where she began to translate her creativity to canvas and began exhibiting and selling her work shortly after. Her work has been showcased at the NOLA Neighborhood Gallery, The New Orleans Museum of African American Art, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, New Orleans Essence Music Fest and resides in the private collection of her patrons. In 2005 her artistic career was cut short by hurricane Katrina. now after a 16 year hiatus, and successful career as a marketing professional, the artist has decided to reclaim her creativity and is looking forward to showing a new collection of work in the fall of 2021.
