BUILDING A BETTER
HOUSTON HABITAT VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION EVENT Our volunteers are very important to the mission of Houston Habitat. Without them, we could not build our homes with the cost efficiency that we do. There are some basic building skills that can be taught fairly easy, and most take to the hammer and nail in no time! Our Volunteer Appreciation Event in June 2017 was to show our gratitude to this tireless group. It was such a hit, we decided to make it an annual event.

SuperBUILD LI We started the year wrapping up a 51-house building blitz in partnership with Super Bowl LI. Houston Habitat’s SuperBUILD LI included the annual KPRC Winter Build, a succession of Community Wall Builds, and sponsored builds such as Chevron came out in numbers. We even had day builds with Uber and representatives from the Houston Texans. The Community Walls Builds were quite memorable, as they took place in various city parks on the coldest morning of the year with temperatures dipping below 30 degrees! Another wall build was held on the campus of Texas Southern University.

Hurricane Harvey Our summer was going very well, and we were gearing up for our fall builds; laying out the plans and schedules. Out of the corner of our eye, we kept getting weather reports that went from weak signals to full-out warnings and alerts. By Friday August 25th, we left not knowing what to expect when we came back to work on Monday. For those in the Houston and surrounding areas, you know what developed. By the next week, homes were underwater, and others were surrounded by water. Our staff could not get to the office until the following Thursday. By then we heard the devastating news: Two communities build by Houston Habitat went under. Our newest community was destroyed; and another community was home to families who had found refuge from the 2005 Hurricane Katrina. We instinctively knew that these particular families would be most vulnerable to a timely recovery so we sent out an all-call for volunteers to come out to help “muck and gut” homes. Our staff went into overdrive – the construction crew on the ground, and office teams on the phone working to raise money to help in any way we could. The cost of repair was astounding, even with volunteer efforts. Thankfully, Habitat for Humanity International came to lend their guidance and their staff. There were several donations in-kind that kept us afloat [infographic list]… And there were 3rd Party events, many individuals who could not stand by and just wanted to do something. [infographic list] The most significant gesture of benevolence came from a group with a gift we never expected Finally, funds came from the City of Houston in a big way. Their funds enabled us to go beyond the Habitat communities and into the surrounding neighborhoods in Settegast and Fifth Ward; areas that were randomly hit, but areas that were vulnerable even before the storm.

30th Anniversary Luncheon
From the very first house a tradition of building strength stability and self-reliance through shelter began
In the midst, there was a special luncheon to prepare for. We celebrated 30 years of service to the Houston community building homes – instilling strength, stability and self-reliance for families and individuals who may not otherwise experience the rewards of purchasing their own home. Add to that our efforts to keep homeowners in their homes, and the 30 th Anniversary Luncheon became a very important time to acknowledge once again our donors, volunteers, and homeowners who weathered the storm.
