Please Note: You must complete a basic skills assessment prior to acceptance into any program. Some programs also have minimum entrance requirements. Contact the NICC Admissions office for more information.

The length of the program will depend upon your educational preparation and the course load you carry. The suggested length is based on a student meeting all the prerequisites and taking a full load of courses each term.

Degree Descriptions AA — Associate in Arts

The Associate in Arts degree is a broad program for transfer into a four-year college or university. The degree can also be earned by students who are undecided on their specific area of study. This degree will take about two years to complete as a full-time student. More specialized AA degrees such as AA Business Administration, AA Communication or AA Education allow students to focus more on courses related to a four-year degree in that specific area.

AS — Associate in Science

The Associate in Science degree is for programs that are more math and science oriented. They are designed to transfer into a four-year college or university in areas specific to health, technical degrees, and some preprofessional programs. This degree will take about two years to complete as a full-time student.

AAS — Associate in Applied Science

The Associate in Applied Science degree program will prepare students for immediate employment opportunities or for transfer credit to colleges on a parallel course evaluation basis. This degree consists of high quality technical courses with less general education courses. This degree will take about two years to complete as a full-time student.

Diploma

Diploma programs prepare students for entry employment and are designed with the assistance of advisory committees to ensure that graduates meet employment requirements. While preparation for employment is a major objective, several programs provide students with the opportunity to complete an associate’s degree with one year of additional study. The diploma will take about one year (2-3 semesters) to complete as a full-time student.

Certificate

Certificates are short programs that provide training for students who want to renew and enhance their skills for current employment, need to complete a condensed training because of a demanding work schedule, or those who seek new skills to enhance their employment marketability. The certificate completion will vary based on the major.

Grants, Loans and Scholarships, Making Sense of it All! Grants This is free money that is awarded to students, possibly based on specific criteria, that does not need to be repaid.

Subsidized Stafford Loans The interest on these loans is paid by the federal government while students are enrolled at least half-time and during a six-month grace period. These funds must be repaid.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loans Financial need is not required to borrow an unsubsidized loan. Students are responsible for the interest on these loans and must be enrolled at least half-time. These funds must be repaid.

Scholarships Free Money! Funds awarded to students based on specific criteria that do not need to be repaid.

Vocational Rehabilitation This federal and state sponsored program provides counseling, medical services, and vocational training to help persons with disabilities find employment.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA) WIA can provide financial assistance to persons who are unemployed or underemployed and to ADC recipients who are in need of retraining to upgrade their skills. Applicants must meet WIA guidelines to be eligible.

Veterans Assistance NICC educational programs are approved by the Veterans Educational Unit of the Iowa Department of Education for the training of eligible persons under current GI Bill programs.

Employer Assistance Some employers cover educational costs as part of their commitment to staff development. Ask your employer about financial help that might be available.

Tuition Payment Plan A monthly payment plan for tuition and course fees is provided through Nelnet. This online service allows automatic debits from a checking, savings or credit card account.

If you want scholarships, grants, loans or work-study, you need to complete the FAFSA [Free Application for Federal Student Aid.] Applications can be completed at www.nicc.edu/FAFSA and need to be submitted as soon as possible after January 1 each year. Full-time Full-time students enroll in 12-18 credit hours each semester, which is 4-6 classes. Finding balance between personal obligations and your education is a priority. We understand this and strive to make your decision to attend NICC easier by offering convenient class times and locations.

Half-time Half-time students enroll in 3-9 credit hours each semester, which is 1-3 classes. Let’s admit it, whether you choose to enroll half-time because of time commitments or because you have been out of school for awhile, it’s scary. Our admissions and advising staff will work with you to ensure you take courses that fit your needs and develop a plan that will help you achieve your goals.

Transferring NICC provides an affordable alternative to starting your college education. With an Associate in Arts degree from NICC, your transfer options are limitless. We maintain formal articulation agreements with several colleges and universities which makes transferring seamless.
