Try something out of the ordinary. NICC unique programs: Dairy Science, Cosmetology, John Deere TECH, Wind Turbine Repair Technician, Gas Utility Construction & Service, Massage Therapy, . . . your options are limitless.

No matter your preference NICC courses are held during the day, in the evening, online and some are a combination of in-class and online. Attendance at one of six centers cuts travel time and keeps money in your pocket as does one of eight degree options offered completely online.

Where can NICC take you?

In addition to many one or two year vocational programs, NICC offers 19 associate in arts and associate in science programs designed to articulate to most four-year colleges and universities. So you really can get started here and go anywhere!

So what is this articulation stuff anyway? The NICC agreements with UNI, Iowa, Iowa State and private colleges like Clarke College, Upper Iowa University and University of Dubuque really make it super easy to transfer.

Checklist for:

September – December of your senior year

Explore college and career options with parents, counselors and teachers. Take a career interest survey like nicc.kuder.com.

Attend area college and career fairs. Talk with college representatives who visit your school.

Gather additional information on the colleges you are most interested in. Compare advantages and disadvantages of each. Narrow down your choices.

Pay special attention to the tuition, program costs, financial aid and scholarships.

Use the free calculator at www.finaid.org to estimate expected family contribution (EFC).

Schedule a college visit. Talk with financial aid, admissions and a faculty member or advisor from each interested program area.

If you haven’t already, take ACT or other pre-admissions test. Understand the admissions requirements of the school you wish to attend. Re-take if necessary to be accepted or to be considered for scholarships.

Complete college admissions applications – pay attention to application deadlines and fees.

For scholarship and admissions application requirements, identify teachers, counselors, principals, and employers who would write letters of recommendation. Gather samples of work, copies of your grades and other important stuff.

Checklist for:

January – February of your senior year

Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form as soon after January 1 as possible. It can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Call 800.433.3243 with your FAFSA related questions.

Confirm that all admissions requirements and materials have been completed and sent in. (Note: Admission requirements may vary by program.)

Look for scholarships!

Some are need-based and others are academic-based.

Don’t assume you won’t qualify! There are many out there, but pay attention to specific qualifications and deadlines. Go to www.fastweb.com.

After High School Graduation  Save for college! Look for possible jobs on or near campus

if you plan to work during the school year. Check out your college’s work study program. (For available jobs in Northeast Iowa, go to www.nicc.edu/jobsearch).

Jim, like most of our instructors, will not only know your name but will also get to know you on a personal level. Whether you have questions in class or outside of class, he is accessible and ready to help you succeed. Additional academic support is also on standby in the learning and writing centers – just waiting for you.

NICC’s small classes, hands-on learning and frequent faculty/ student interactions can often be the difference of a whole letter grade or more. Compare our classes with those in large university halls and you will quickly see the difference!

Degree Descriptions AA — Associate in Arts

The Associate in Arts degree is a broad program for transfer into a four-year college or university. The degree can also be earned by students who are undecided on their specific area of study. This degree will take about two years to complete as a full-time student. More specialized AA degrees such as AA Business Administration, AA Communication or AA Education allow students to focus more on courses related to a four-year degree in that specific area.

AS — Associate in Science

The Associate in Science degree is for programs that are more math and science oriented. They are designed to transfer into a four-year college or university in areas specific to health, technical degrees, and some preprofessional programs. This degree will take about two years to complete as a full-time student.

AAS — Associate in Applied Science

The Associate in Applied Science degree program will prepare students for immediate employment opportunities or for transfer credit to colleges on a parallel course evaluation basis. This degree consists of high quality technical courses with less general education courses. This degree will take about two years to complete as a full-time student.

Diploma

Diploma programs prepare students for entry employment and are designed with the assistance of advisory committees to ensure that graduates meet employment requirements. While preparation for employment is a major objective, several programs provide students with the opportunity to complete an associate’s degree with one year of additional study. The diploma will take about one year (2-3 semesters) to complete as a full-time student.

Certificate

Certificates are short programs that provide training for students who want to renew and enhance their skills for current employment, need to complete a condensed training because of a demanding work schedule, or those who seek new skills to enhance their employment marketability. The certificate completion will vary based on the major.
