Z.S. L iang From Stories to Studies

For more than a decade, Z.S. Liang has worked closely with Legacy Gallery, but this exhibition marks his first presentation of color studies—works both new and revisited that offer a rare glimpse into the artist’s process and the foundation of his larger canvases. Each piece tells a story through composition, value, and color, revealing Liang’s mastery of visual storytelling. Rooted in extensive research and deep respect for Native history, his paintings— such as Solicitation for Leadership, Trading with the Blackfeet, and Looking Beyond the Big Eagle Mountains—capture human connection, rhythm, and strength. A single line from an oral history can inspire an entire work like Sitting’s Kindness, reflecting Liang’s ability to transform the smallest fragments of narrative into art rich with humanity and depth.
Several paintings in this exhibition are marked with two dates. Liang initially completed them as compositional and color studies—stripped down to essential forms and values. Years later, he returned to these canvases, refining them with greater detail, nuance, and storytelling. The result is a unique layering of time and vision: the immediacy of the first conception fused with the maturity of his later hand.
