Legacy Gallery is proud to present A Weekend with Jeff Cochran, a two-day live painting event featuring new works by the Taos-based artist whose paintings embody the raw beauty, rhythm, and spirit of the Northern New Mexico landscape.

Working from his high desert property just outside of Taos, Cochran approaches painting not simply as a profession, but as a way of life. His days are shaped by the same forces that define his work—sunlight, soil, weather, and time. Whether tending his organic farm, working the land, or stepping into his studio where “twenty minutes turns into five hours,” Cochran remains deeply attuned to the subtle shifts in color, atmosphere, and form that make this region so visually compelling.

Executed with confident, impasto brushwork—often with a palette knife and his signature use of bold color—Cochran’s landscapes strike a balance between realism and romanticism. His paintings capture those fleeting, perfect moments when light meets land in a way that feels both immediate and timeless. There is an honesty in his work, a refusal to overwork or overdefine, allowing the paint itself to speak with energy and authenticity.

Cochran’s artistic journey began early, selling paintings straight out of high school before moving into a career as an illustrator. His early acclaim came through his powerful and introspective chimpanzee portraits, including works collected by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall. While those works explored identity and connection in unexpected ways, his recent focus has turned fully toward the landscapes that surround his life—places he knows not just visually, but physically, through years of working the land.

Throughout the weekend, guests are invited to experience Cochran’s process firsthand as he paints live in the gallery, offering insight into his intuitive approach and deep connection to place. This special event provides a rare opportunity to engage with the artist and acquire new works that reflect both the ruggedness and quiet poetry of the high desert.
