Social & Environment Ramp Construction at Rainbow Rescue Lions Brian Balfour, Dennis McSween, Thomas George and Robert Hunt kicked off the Fiscal Year with a project that focused on Youth as well as Social and the Environment. These Lions assisted by four Fire Officers , built a cat ramp at the Rainbow Rescue Children’s Home compound to give the home’s new Bus access parking on the compound.

Highlights from our Ongoing Project at Cascade School for the Deaf Cascade School for the Deaf project is well on the way with work done to remove ceiling tiles, damaged ceiling supports and other structural parts of the building that is due for repairs. Work undertaken thus far include landscaping, plumbing, electrical, repair to bunk beds and toilet facilities. Estimates for materials needed were collected.

Assistance for Cascade Due to the construction of town houses and apartments in the area, the river that runs behind the Cascade School for the Deaf has changed its course. The river is now making a ‘C’ just behind the building resulting in erosion of the land. With the recent rains, this has exacerbated the problem and the building is now on the verge of falling in. Letters for assistance have been sent out to the San Juan Laventille Regional Corporation, the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Education. More information will be forthcoming as this matter continues.

Please keep Lion Hunt in your thoughts as he recovers from a fall he sustained while working a the Cascade School for the Deaf. 2

Youth Affairs Committee Cub Scouts on a Mission

Trip to the Emperor Valley Zoo

On 13th July 2017, our Cub Pack, 34th P-O-S, greeted the public at Massy Stores in Maraval. The cubs briefly shared their mission of food collection with a vision to alleviate hunger in their communities. They invited customers to partner with them by donating non- perishable food items. The food collected was separated into hampers to be distributed to the less fortunate. Lions can also assist by dropping in food items at the collection bins in any branch of Massy Stores nationwide.

On August 9th , the 34th POS Cub Pack attended an activity which took them to a guided tour of The Emperor Valley Zoo and a picnic at The Royal Botanical Gardens. Two Scout Commissioners as well as supporting parents were in attendance.

Trip ‘Down the Islands’ Nine cubs accompanied by parents, one warranted leader as well as Lions Marcia and Rex engaged in a three-hour Western Peninsula Tour aboard the water taxi. Some of the places visited were the five islands namely, Nelson Island, Krondstadt, Monos, Huevos, Gasparee and Chacachacare. The cubs learnt historical facts about the islands, viewed dolphins and had opportunity to win prizes. This activity took place on 21st July.

The Mission Continues Below is footage of the Cubs from the 34th POS Cub Pack donating hampers to needy families.

Trinidad and Tobago History Titbits Happy Independence Lions!

This photograph symbolises one of the elements that has defined us as a nation. It displays our very first parliament sitting as an Independent Nation in 1962. Before this parliament was the Legislative Council which ran the affairs of the country with the Governor as the head - sending correspondence to the Colonial Secretary for the Colonies in England. In this picture, Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (centre) addresses the House of Representatives, giving greetings on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of the first sitting of parliament after Independence. 5

Ten Questions with… 2VDG LION ANWAR HOLLINGSWORTH Originally from Suriname, Lion Anwar was inducted into the Leo Club Nw. Nickerie in 1997. He served the Leo movement for 12 years in two regions Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago before being inducted into the Port of Spain North Lions Club in 2008. After serving in many club leadership capacities and positions, he became the Club President in fiscal year 2012-2013. Additionally, he has served in many leadership capacities both on a District and Multiple District level, culminating in his election to the post of Second Vice District Governor at the Multiple District Convention in Suriname. Professionally, Lion Anwar is a Lead Consultant with Anworth & Co. What is your best memory to date in Lionism? Back home in Nw. Nickerie we took elderly persons from a Senior Citizen home. We treated them to breakfast and lunch as well as games. It was seeing the smiles on their faces that made it worthwhile—a day of fun, laughter and food.

What inspires you? Being of service to people. It gives me the drive to do more for others.

What is your greatest strength? My intuition.

If you could be any age for a week, what age would that be and why? A new born baby— I would have all the care in world.

What is your pet peeve? Asking obvious questions.

What is your favourite book? 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey.

What quality do you value most in friends (both male and female)? The friend that goes the extra mile. All the time, I try to give the best to my friends. I look for people who would do the same.

What is your greatest joy? Seeing people happy. I value family life—without that foundation from family, you cannot share happiness.

What is the first thing you did this morning? Greeting my mom and sister and having breakfast with them.

What do you consider your most cherished virtue? Objectivity.
