On a mission to respond to the climate emergency, we invest 100% of our surplus income into community-owned renewable energy: since 2019 we have supported projects in Brighton, Oxford, Swansea, Glasgow and London. We’ve even given this a name – The Positive Fund! We’re just at the beginning of our journey, and as our membership grows we’ll feature more beautiful brands and fund even more renewable energy projects – it’s the Power of Positive Shopping! The Power of Positive Shopping campaign (POPS) connects local and sustainable businesses to shops, museums and other venues where they can reach new audiences. In 2019 some of our businesses took part in our Sustainable Department Store which popped up at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester. When the pandemic caused national museums to shut, we responded by creating an online eco-store in partnership with Manchester Art Gallery, enabling the museum and our businesses to trade during lockdown. You’ll soon find our members at Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin (1819-1900), nestled in a breathtakingly beautiful spot on the banks of Lake Coniston in Cumbria.
As our campaign grows we’ll be marrying up members with local shops. If you find yourself in south London, visit the magical Tales on Moon Lane where you can pick up a Play Press buildable playset, made from FSC cardboard; it’s plastic free and manufactured in the UK too. Our mission is to spread Positive Shopping far and wide, making it easy for businesses to work together and for shoppers to buy locally and sustainably. We’re encouraging everyone to discover the joys of a low-carbon, local lifestyle. Check out your local POPS venues and visit some of these iconic cultural spaces. The idea for Angels and Stars was born when Karen Harvey, owner of Glasgow lifestyle store Hoos, offered to sponsor a Blue Patch membership for a Glaswegian start-up chocolatier. Our very first Star is Bare Bones Chocolate, an ethical company with a strong sustainability core. This includes fair wages, a transparent supply chain and a careful consideration of waste materials and packaging. After much thought we’ve extended this idea to create a network of individuals and companies that want to give another business a helping hand.

HOW TO SPARK THE CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION How can we use renewable energy to recover from the pandemic and tackle the climate emergency at the same time? Renewable energy offers a huge opportunity to build back better by creating high quality green jobs, boosting the economy and cleaning up the energy system. Many of the actions to support this require systemic changes but how can you, as an individual, make a difference? Understand your impact
Warm homes
One way to do this is by educating yourself about your climate impact and empowering yourself to make positive changes. Calculating your carbon footprint can help identify high carbon behaviours to reduce.
The majority of energy you use at home is for heat and hot water. Learn about insulation, lowcarbon heating and hot water systems for your home such as air-or ground-source heat pumps, solar thermal panels and smart hot water tanks.
Take control of your energy
Your money matters
Choose a 100% renewable electricity supplier with direct contracts to clean energy generators like Thrive Renewables. Be smart about energy usage.
