Discussion Forum: Soft Skills

As the reporters say, most of the hiring managers tend to have criteria of 85% soft skills and 15% hard skill for them to hire an applicant. So here are my learnings from the report.

First, I have learned that change is really constant and that employees need to have adaptability as a skill to be able to work harmoniously in a company. I agree to this since I have been a working student and I have worked in a BPO company. In a span of 2 years, I have experienced change a million times. At first it frustrates me, but then, I realized that all my co-workers are complaining for just a day or two. It made me realize how resilient and how adaptive they are to scenarios like change. Months passed and another change happened. I eventually saw myself being adaptive to the situation I am in because I have come to realize that sulking and complaining for months won’t do me any good. I saw myself adapt to change since change happen every day. I also noticed that I don’t get astonished and frustrated anymore every time I see change coming. Whether it’s a roster change, LOB change, or even changes in my roles and responsibilities; because whatever change I am in, I always make sure that I do my best in that situation.

Second, I have learned the essence of a person’s character in his/her career. Our knowledge and learnings in school or as we know as hard skill, may be a tool for us to get the job. However, our soft skills will be the one to help us stay in a company. I have encountered several people who have been hired due to their credentials and academic

achievements. They have become managers and other higher positions; however, they seem to fail in managing their subordinates as well as their responsibilities. Complaints are skyrocketing due to their management styles and the way they treat their subordinates. I have learned that a person’s character cannot be taught in school but by someone’s ethics and beliefs.

Third, I have learned that work ethics is being professional and that it is essential in a workplace. There should be boundaries between our personal lives and work life. I have experienced a great work ethics. I believe that in order to establish camaraderie and teamwork, one should also allow others to enter a bit of our personal lives. I have known someone who a superior in position who wants his team to have a get together. However, I have noticed that the team is effective and productive because the team is comfortable and confident in their superior. In return, the team respects and acts professionally despite the bonding they have experienced personally.

Fourth, I have learned that jobs are difficult. However, despite the difficulty of a job, we should always thank God and praise Him for all the blessing we have received. Even if we are in our most difficult season, someone out there is wishing to be in our shoes; enjoying the blessings. I have realized after watching one of their videos because I have noticed that after a person gets hired, after a month or two, they keeps complaining and hence being ungrateful.

Lastly, I have realized that both adaptability and work ethics may be difficult to practice now. It may be difficult to fathom as to how should we act or whatnot. However, when we get our desired jobs soon, it would be the time we can relate to these soft skills and be aware of the advantages and disadvantages it brings.
