As another fantastic golf season has come to an end, I can’t help but reflect on what has been both a memorable year and a special milestone This was my fifth and final season with the Army Golf Association, and what a wonderful way to finish.
It has been a year full of great moments and worthy champions. Lt Adam Stone RE made a remarkable first appearance, taking the Strokeplay Championship in commanding style In the Matchplay competitions, familiar names returned to the top LCpl Graeme Torrie RE retained his title from 2022, while Cpl Niki Sutton AGC(SPS) added another win to her growing list of victories from 2021, 2022 and 2024 3 PWRR (A) once again claimed victory at the Inter Unit Championship, and I will be cheering them on in 2026 as they aim for a hat-trick. A long-awaited win also came for Ian Bosley at the Stableford Championship, a fantastic reward for his loyalty and perseverance over the years.
Across all regions and Corps, the enthusiasm for Army Golf has been inspiring The effort that goes into organising each event, along with the growing number of players taking part, shows just how strong our golfing community has become
A heartfelt thank you goes to our sponsors, supporters and every player who makes these events possible. You are the reason we can do what we love and continue to deliver these competitions year after year
As I said goodbye to my role as Assistant Operations Manager, I did so with real pride and fond memories It was a privilege to be part of the AGA family in this capacity, and I will continue to support and celebrate its future successes with huge affection (and perhaps a touch of envy) from the sidelines.
I wish everyone involved a fantastic 2026 season, full of great golf, good company and, hopefully, fewer lost balls than last year I’ll be watching closely and cheering you on every step of the way

CHAIR’S F O R E W O R D
by Brigadier Kieran Sheldon
The 2025 Army Golf season has once again showcased the depth of talent, enthusiasm, and camaraderie that make Army Golf so special. With our schedule back to normal, the Strokeplay Championship returned to its traditional May slot, and the Matchplay and Inter Corps Championships to July The only disappointment was the cancellation of the Quill & Club tournament due to a packed calendar It will be back in the future, albeit likely in a changed slot at the start of the season to get us off on the right foot.
The season began with the Strokeplay Championship at Liphook GC, where newcomer Lt Adam Stone RE impressed everyone by claiming the title on his debut The High Handicap Championship at Test Valley GC saw WO2 Matthew Stamp REME take top honours.
In the Inter Unit Championship, 3 PWRR (A) once again proved unbeatable, successfully defending their title to lift the Balfour Trophy Though “lift” might be the wrong word, given that the trophy is enormous, fragile, and in so many pieces it’s safer admired than handled!
The Men’s Matchplay Championship delivered some thrilling golf, with LCpl Graeme Torrie RE emerging victorious for the second time, adding to his 2022 title. The Women’s Matchplay was won by Cpl Niki Sutton AGC(SPS), who continued her remarkable record with her fourth Matchplay win, following victories in 2021, 2022, and 2024
The Inter Corps Championship saw a memorable rematch between the Royal Artillery (RA) and the Royal Engineers (RE), who had also met in the final in 2024 when the RA took the title This time, however, the RE came out on top, taking a well-earned victory and sweet revenge in an excellent contest that showcased the strength and spirit of both teams.
In August, the Stableford Championship at Whittington Heath GC produced a popular winner in Mr Ian Bosley, whose consistent play over many years finally earned him the trophy he so thoroughly deserved
At the Inter Regional Championship, Eastern 2 rose to the occasion, securing victory with a strong team performance
The Inter Service Championships at Saunton GC were a true test of resilience, as our Men’s and Women’s teams not only battled their opponents but also the horrendous weather that swept across the course Despite their best efforts, both teams were edged out by the Royal Navy – better luck (and calmer skies) next year!
In the Inter Corps League, RAPTC capped an outstanding season by winning the Division 1 title after a nail-biting finish with the Royal Signals, decided only on holes won in their head-to-head match. Their victory is an especially impressive achievement, given that they were the Division 2 winners in 2024 – a remarkable step up and proof of their continued progress REME captured the Division 2 title, rounding off another exciting league season
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the Regional and Corps committees for continuing to deliver events despite their demanding day jobs, as well as to the Men’s and Women’s committees for their dedication throughout the season Our gratitude also goes to all our sponsors and supporters for their invaluable contributions – without them, Army Golf would not be able to thrive as much as it does Finally, a huge thank you to our officials, who work tirelessly behind the scenes, and to every player who takes part and upholds the spirit of Army Golf
Here’s to another successful and enjoyable season ahead in 2026!

CHAMPIONSHIP
Following a number of years playing parkland courses, an opportunity arose for the AGA to take the 2025 Strokeplay Championship to Liphook GC, one of the best golf courses in the UK and certainly in Southern England. With its tight fairways, lined with an abundance of heather, gorse and trees, the premium was on accuracy, but its biggest defence was its greens, which ran true and fast with subtle breaks and borrows. Measuring 6523 yards from the Championship tees, this heathland course was going to provide one of the sternest tests of golf our elite golfers would have experienced in many a year
Our thanks must go to the General Manager, a friend of the AGA, Mr John Douglass. A former officer in the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, who, on leaving the Army, worked as the Secretary of the Sennelager GC, then the Army GC, before landing at Liphook, his home for the past 20 years
When John announced that he would be retiring in 2025, and with the AGA looking for a venue, what better way to close a career than to host one of the Army’s prestigious golf Championships, the Army Strokeplay, in your last year – John’s last day in office was on 20 Nov – Cambrai Day; for the Tankies who read this, you will know.
We welcomed our new sponsors to the event, Josh Edwards from Pozitive Energy, himself an elite golfer with a handicap of +1, and of course, whilst not there in person, Thales, returned as our headline sponsor for 2025. Finally, H&K, who continue to provide our officials’ clothing. We were also able to welcome a representative from PXG to mark the AGA’s formal engagement with PXG, which we hope will provide benefits to all players and the Association alike Our thanks to all sponsors and supporters of the AGA, without whom events such as these would not be possible.
So, with a full field of 72 golfers with handicaps ranging from +4 2 to 91, almost everyone took the opportunity to play the practice round. Indeed, some players had played the course several times in the preceding weeks, such was the quality and difficulty of the course, which would have been unknown to many in the field
Round one started early, with the sun rising just above the trees. Although it would stay dry for the most part, there was a chance that play could be stopped owing to lightning later in the day Fortunately, this would not be the case, although some villages in the local area were not quite so lucky
The step up in the quality and therefore level of difficulty of the course became quickly evident, with many of our standout Army players struggling to come to terms with the course, in particular around the greens But after the first round, some familiar names were already moving to the top of the leaderboard. LCpl Graeme Torrie RE led after a round of 71, closely followed by Lt Adam Stone RE, a former tour professional, on 72 Then 3 back on 75 were Capt Neil Williams RA, the reigning Champion seeking to retain his title, and SSgt Matthew Bruce-Smith AGC On 76 were Cpl Ross Greenwood RE, 2024's runner-up, and Mr Matt Dale. The AGA Chair, Brig Kieran Sheldon RA, was pleased with his work for the morning, finishing with a respectable 87 in 40th place Other notable Army players included Sgt Glen Watt RAC, LCpl Thomas Sanghera REME, SSgt Gaz Gurung RE, and former multiple winner Mr Ben Churchill. Whilst all were slightly off the pace, they remained within reach of the leaders
Round two started in a similar fashion, the heath and gorse proving a real test for those missing the fairways. Scoring was again a challenge, with some indifferent scoring seeing some dropping off the pace whilst others
others held bogeys on demonstratin adding a sec to finish as second place who did well struggles to Bruce-Smith third on 151 Team, Capt Jo off the lead o Sanghera Al more shots great feats of anyone to mo overarching t Liphook was venues, and ironed each d
Day two sta sunshine and midges were all who wore waiting on th much the s scratching of much enjoym course.
gWilliams carded an excellent round of 70, the best of the competition so far. Aird followed closely with a 71, matched by Gurung G. Churchill continued his charge back into contention with a 74, while Stone maintained his consistency with another 74 With several players having posted previous rounds in the mid to high 70s, the final round was shaping up to be a tough challenge for many of the top Army players.
In the first round of the Stableford competition, which offered an opportunity to regroup and start afresh, the course proved once again to be the winner as there were no level-par scores after the first round. The top three were all level on 34pts: Sgt James Watson AGC, Col Andrew Pritchard RE and CSjt Yambahadur Gurung RCAM Maj Scott Dunn Inf and LCpl Elliott Homewood RE followed closely on 33pts, with only 13 players from the field of 38 reaching 30pts – that in itself told the story.
Mr Ben Churchill
Capt Jordan Aird RLC
The final round of the main Strokeplay competition left many playing for pride, consolation and, in some cases, a little enjoyment, although to a tee, everyone had enjoyed the experience of playing a course that had been set up similar to an Open Qualifier. So, to post consistent and respectable scores was a real positive for many to take away, knowing their game was in good shape
So, with Stone starting the final round with a five-shot lead over Williams and six over Aird, Torrie and Watt, and all others 10 or more back, it looked like the winner would certainly come from the final two groups, but on this course, there were no certainties
In the final round of the Stableford competition, finding a level of consistency would be the key. But after two days of hard work and concentration on the Liphook course, this was easier said than done Once again, the course won the day, with only CSgt Bikash Gurung Inf scoring 36pts, and LCpl Jonathan McManus Int Corps one back on 35pts. SSgt James Stafford RE and Homewood scored a respectable 34pts each, but thereafter the scores dropped away sharply, with only 7 of the field scoring in the 30s After some excellent levels of consistency, McManus pipped Homewood on countback to win the Stableford competition on 67pts Gurung B was one back on 66pts, followed by SSgt Chris Rosie RE on 64pts and Stafford on 62pts.
In the Strokeplay, it was very much Stone’s title to lose going into the final round with a five-shot cushion, and he wasn’t about to give it up. With the chasing pack having to take
more risks (on this course, that would always be a gamble) and as the round moved to the final stages, one by one the field dropped off the pace, leaving Stone a comfortable run down the stretch That said, Greenwood had a good final round of 72, which moved him up the leaderboard, but his first two rounds were his undoing. Churchill maintained his consistency with a good closing round of 74, which also moved him into contention At the close, Aird and Torrie carded 74 and 75 respectively, with WO2 Kevin Ramage RA one back on 76 Williams and Watt, who were in contention for a period, struggled a little at the end and dropped off the pace. At the close, therefore, Stone was the clear winner by seven shots on 293, Aird in second with 300, followed closely by Torrie on 301, and then Greenwood on 302
In the nett competition, Churchill’s consistent play, finishing on 292, earned him the title of nett Strokeplay Champion on countback from Aird in second place, with Ramage third on 297
To close, our thanks go to the Club Captain, Richard Edmondson, and the committee; to the General Manager, John Douglass, and his team (Grant and Julie), the Course Manager, Dave Murdoch, for setting up the course in such spectacular fashion; to Ian in the Pro Shop, and finally all members of Liphook GC for giving up their course for the three days Such was the success of the event and the manner in which the AGA was welcomed by the club, we hope to return in years to come. A final special thanks must go to all the AGA officials for the work they do at the event and in the days and weeks prior that ensure we have a full field of players, and everything runs smoothly on the day.
There were 4 holes in one in total:
Round 1 on the 1 – Maj Charles O’Shea RA st
Round 1 on the 12 – Mr Leighton Davies th Round 4 on the 3 – WO2 Kerry Roberts RA rd Round 4 on the 1 – Capt Neil Williams RA st
Huge congratulations to all four who each won a box of PXG Golf balls
The Strokeplay Championship will return to Little Aston GC for 2026 It will take place over the period 18 – 20 May 26. AGA members should note that this is a mixed competition open to all members of the AGA with the field limited to 72 players All interested in playing, whatever handicap, should enter Entry form and Admin Instruction are available on the website

As the most junior of the AGA competitions, the High Handicap Championship has been run by the AGA since 2022. In the subsequent years, it has steadily grown to just under 40 entrants, although there is still some way to go before we reach our target of 64, in line with other AGA Championship events In 2025, we had 42 participants, until a few dropped out at the last minute
The competition consisted of 36 holes off the respective tees, yellow for the men and red for the women Flights were sent out in groups of three at 8-minute intervals to ensure the pace of play remained on track It must be mentioned that, given some of the handicaps on display, both rounds were played with no gaps in the field all day. With a little supervision, all flights kept moving, and play flowed smoothly, with all groups completing 18 holes in about four hours If only all our events followed the same pattern
Once again, we were hosted by Test Valley GC (TVGC), a venue periodically used by the South East region and thus familiar to some competitors The course, based on chalk, drains well and, with little water on the course, is a popular choice as a host venue The work to move the driving range and reshape the first tee was nearing completion, but we were a couple of weeks too early to be able to use the new layout. However, we look forward to doing so next year
For many, this was their first formal AGA competition, and their first over 36 holes in one day, so both the mental and physical elements of fatigue came as a surprise to some. Not least was the experience of having their names called out on the first tee, which was surrounded by the new AGA hoarding boards While the course was a little forgiving in places, it’s not the longest course the AGA uses. The rough was not as high as in recent years, but the greens were quickening. All in all, the course offered all we set out for – a fair
but stern test of golf The tee boxes were set up as they would be for all Championship events, with AGA, sponsor, and event banners flying. The players were formally briefed and introduced on the tee. For some, this added an extra layer of stress to the first shot of the day, as evidenced by the variety of shots that sprayed the first fairway However, all managed to get past the red tee box, which added to the experience.
In, we were blessed with good weather. The sun shone through as we arrived to set up and did not fail us all day, such that we even managed an outdoor prize-giving
With handicaps ranging from 18 at the lowest to 36 at the highest, some of the scoring was impressive. There was plenty of good ballstriking and, while the run-out may have been slightly reduced given the recent rain, there was ample reward for those who could stay on the fairway With a bit of give on the greens, they could be attacked by those confident enough to try. After the first round, the clubhouse leader was Mr Trevor Gregg, a stalwart of this event for many years, on 43pts Just three behind, on 40pts, was Capt Freya Bowen RE, competing in her first competition One back from her was Sgt Alex Kelly RLC on 39pts, followed by a long stream of players all in the 30s. It would be interesting to see if the levels of consistency could be maintained throughout the afternoon round
The sun continued to shine throughout the afternoon, resulting in some of the best playing conditions seen at this event in recent years. There was a good chance of higher scores as the day unfolded, and indeed, 11 players scored 36pts or over by the end of the second round The next step for many in the field would be the Stableford Championship at the beginning of August, where they could pit their wits against some of our more established players over three rounds this year. As one door closes, another opens.
Round 2 concluded with a great score of 44pts by WO2 Matthew Stamp REME, playing off 25 This was followed by Spr Sam Maybury RE and LCpl Jack Brady RLC, both with 40pts, then WO2 Sean Geoghegan Inf and another consistent round from Bowen on 39pts
From the morning high-flyers, only Bowen and Kelly were able to maintain the pressure to stay at the top of the leaderboard Kelly and WO1 Carl Blackburn RLC played two very steady and consistent rounds of 39+38 and 38+38 respectively Gregg dropped off the pace sharply in Round 2 (as a result of his charity day the day before – so he said). 2024's winner, Capt James Flood RE, was not able to retain his crown, partly due to attending a recent skills course and having made changes to his swing – he hopes that will pay dividends for next year’s event!
Our sincere thanks go to Maria McKenzie, the Sales & Marketing Manager, and the staff and members of TVGC for allowing the AGA to hold
hold this Championship on their course and for presenting the course in such excellent condition Going forward, Test Valley have kindly agreed to host this event for the next five years, with dates to follow Special thanks must go to the AGA officials, Diane Walters and Jana Daniell, for administering and running the event in their usual professional and tireless manner – both at the event and back in the office Finally, the AGA is eternally grateful to Thales, as the AGA headline sponsor for 2025, and to our new sponsor for 2025, Pozitive Energy
The 2026 High Handicap Championship will, once again, be held at Test Valley GC on Wed 27 May 26 AGA members are reminded that this is a mixed competition open to all AGA members, with the field limited to approximately 32 players All golfers with a handicap of 17 or higher interested in playing should enter (with a maximum of 28 for men and 36 for women). Entry form and Admin Instruction are available on the website

CHAMPIONSHIP
The Inter Unit returned to Catterick last year with an increased field of 18 teams, continuing a steady growth over recent years. With teams travelling the length and breadth of the country, it was pleasing to see that this long-standing competition remains as popular as ever
We were blessed with glorious sunshine upon arrival for the practice day and set-up. Those who took advantage of the practice round had a distinct advantage, having seen firsthand the condition of the course and the length of the rough, which was high Day one saw all teams participate in a 36-hole Stableford qualifier played off 95% course handicap. The top four teams progressed into the Main Matchplay Championship to compete for the Balfour Trophy, while the next four progressed into the Plate to compete for the India Cup The remaining ten teams played a 27-hole team Stableford event for the UDR Trophy
The weather remained hot and sunny throughout both rounds on Wednesday. While these were good playing conditions, the heat had a draining effect on the players The course was in excellent condition once again, following a dry spring and recent rainfall, leaving it lush, green, and running firm. However, for the players, the downside was the rough, now thick and deep for anyone who strayed off the fairways This would prove a stern test for every golfer, regardless of whether they had a handicap of 5 or 28
Given the look and feel of the course, there was some surprisingly good scoring in the first round, with 24 players scoring 30pts or more Notably, four players played under handicap: Capt Michael Fitzpatrick (17), Sgt Santosh Rai (11), and Cpl George Dickinson (4) all with 38pts, followed by Sgt Raju Tamang (7) with 37pts. Once all the scores were in, the early leaders were 3 PWRR (A) with 107pts,
closely followed by MPS Regt MCTC with 106pts Five back on 101pts was 1 CS Bn REME
The remaining teams were all 8+ pts off the pace. Everything was still to play for going into the afternoon.
After a great lunch (our compliments to Michael the chef) it was back out into the sun, which felt warmer than during the morning round. As the sun firmed up the course throughout the afternoon, the greens began to speed up. It would be interesting to compare the morning and afternoon scores
To our surprise, the scores were equally as strong, with a few particularly good performances 27 players scored 30pts or more, with the highest being 40pts from Fitzpatrick. SSgt Ben Taylor (24) followed with 39pts, two ahead of Capt Stephen Johnson (8) Maj Jogendrasing Limbu (15) and Capt Steven Harrison (15) who all carded 37pts
The best overall individual standings from day one were:
The draw for the semi-finals in the two Matchplay competitions was as follows:
Main Championship:
1 CS Bn REME vs 3 PWRR (B)
MPS Regt MCTC vs 3 PWRR (A)
Plate Competition:
DSEME vs ATC Pirbright
255 Sig Sqn vs 5 MI Bn
Day two began with light fog, although the forecast suggested it wouldn’t last long Sure enough, once the sun rose, it quickly burnt off, leaving another glorious day in the northern sun. The ten teams not making it into the Matchplay competition made the trek up the hill to the 10th tee for the Stableford event, with the familiar sentiment in the air: “Our team definitely needs to improve for next year to avoid this climb.”
With all teams now more familiar with the course after two rounds the day before, there was an air of confidence, and significantly fewer golf balls were sprayed into the rough off the 10th tee Everything pointed to some competitive golf ahead.
In the morning round of the Stableford competition, only three players managed to break par: Harrison with 40pts, Cpl Laxmiraj Thapa Magar (13) with 38pts, and WO1 Mike Arnell (28) with 37pts After 18 holes, HQ 1UKXX led the field on 103pts, with 2 RANGER close behind on 100pts. HQ SASC trailed by 10pts on 90pts, leaving plenty still to play for over the final 9 holes
In the first semi-final of the Plate Competition, DSEME faced ATC Pirbright, while 255 Sig Sqn played 5 MI Bn In a slightly one-sided match, ATC Pirbright defeated DSEME 2½ – ½ Dickinson, giving away six shots, beat WO2 Krishna Yonghang (10) 5&4. Santosh Rai and CSgt Bikas Rai (18) finished all square, before WO2 Khagendra Gurung (15) beat WO2 Wayne Alden (24) 8&6 to win through to the Plate Final
In the second Plate semi-final, 255 Sig Sqn edged out 5 MI Bn with a 2 – 1 victory. In a tight match that went down to the wire, Cpl Luke West (11) beat Cpl Tony Rutter (13) 1Up, Cpl Jake Barrass (16) beat WO2 Lochlann Brown (23) 4&3, before Taylor pulled one back for 5 MI Bn, defeating Sig Joshua Thomas (17) 1Up
In the main competition, both 3 PWRR (A) and (B) reached the semi-finals, managing to avoid each other The A team faced MPS Regt MCTC, while the B team met 1 CS Bn REME
Both semi-finals ended 2 – 1, with some highscoring wins. 1 CS Bn REME faced 3 PWRR (B) and lost 1 – 2. WO2 Indra Gurung (22) beat Capt Carl Appleby (11) 2Up. Fitzpatrick levelled the score with a 6&5 win over Cpl Ricky White (26), and Jogendrasing Limbu convincingly beat WO2 Edward Frank (15) 7&5 to put 3 PWRR (B) through In the other semi-final, 3 PWRR (A) beat MPS Regt MCTC 2 – 1 in convincing fashion. Johnson (8) beat Sgt Aash Gurung (14) 5&4, WO2 Netra Rai (9) beat Sgt Andy Lund (6) 5&3, and Raju Tamang beat WO2 Colin Jenkins (9) 4&3 This set up an all-3 PWRR final At least the trophy was staying in the regiment, with only internal bragging rights to be decided.
As the sun continued to beat down throughout the afternoon, the top four Stableford competition teams pulled further away from the pack With only one player breaking par, there were unlikely to be major moves on the leaderboard, though a few notable scores emerged: Maj Thomas Millns (11) carded 20pts over 9 holes, followed by WO2 Christopher Wood (5), Sgt Andrew Heslop (8), and Cpl Diwash Purja Pun (10), all on 18pts
Ultimately, HQ 1UKXX proved too strong, holding onto their morning lead to win with 150pts. In second place, 2 RANGER finished 5pts back on 145pts, and in third, HQ SASC with 137pts
With the Stableford concluded, attention turned to the finals. In the Plate, ATC Pirbright faced 255 Sig Sqn. With no major margins and evenly matched handicaps, ATC Pirbright secured a steady win, taking all three matches either 2&1 or 3&2
The Main final saw the trophy staying with the Regiment, regardless of which 3 PWRR team won. The lower-handicapped A team gave shots across all matches but still secured a convincing 2½ – ½ win With the first two matches securing the A team’s victory, the final match was halved, and players walked in from the 17th
Notably, with 3 PWRR (A) winning the Inter Unit Trophy for the second year running, only twice in the past 100 years has the trophy been won three years consecutively by the same unit 3 PWRR now have a chance to make history next year
Huge congratulations to all the players who fought hard over the two days for their units in testing conditions The AGA remains committed to growing this event and welcomes entries from all units able to field a team of three – male, female, or mixed
As always, we extend our sincere thanks to our sponsors and supporters, without whom these events could not take place To Thales (our headline sponsor), Pozitive Energy, Heckler & Koch (clothing sponsor), Comms Spec (communications supplier), and Army Sport (grant support) – thank you!
Finally, our sincere and heartfelt thanks go once again to Catterick GC, its members and committee for their continued support and generosity in allowing us to take over significant tee times, and at times the course itself, across the two days The course was presented in immaculate condition. We were superbly looked after throughout by Club Secretary Shireen Rudge, along with James Wallace and his excellent pro shop team Our thanks also extend to the catering and bar staff, in particular Sarah and Michael the chef, who ensured that everyone was well fed and looked after.

MATCHPLAY & INTER CORPS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Army Golf Championships are the premier event in the Army Golf calendar and are permanently held at Saunton GC The Championships consist of the individual Matchplay events for both men and women and the Inter Corps tournament. The event was generously supported by Army Sport, with the AGA grateful for their invaluable backing, as well as Thales, the AGA's headline sponsor once again, and Pozitive Energy
The Championships kick off a day early for the committee and officials playing a ‘friendly’ match against the GC On a particularly windswept Saturday at Saunton, with persistent 30mph gusts and intermittent drizzle, both teams arrived prepared for a fiercely contested fixture. Despite the challenging weather, the course stood up superbly to the elements. The greens were slick and true, rewarding confident putting, while the firm fairways offered generous roll, demanding precision off the tee
The AGA team showed resilience and determination throughout all the matches, but the Saunton GC Committee proved formidable on their home turf Their local knowledge and adaptability to the conditions gave them the edge in key moments
Although the final scoreline read 4–1 in favour of Saunton, the matches were played in excellent spirit, with several games finishing on the 16th and 17th holes Congratulations must go to Mr Andy Harriott and WO2 Kerry Roberts RA on winning their matches The Army side can take pride in their performance and the camaraderie displayed throughout the day.
Special thanks go to Saunton GC for their warm hospitality and the immaculate condition of the course, which provided a true test of golf despite the weather
102nd Matchplay Championship
The 2025 competition once again boasted a full field, with 93 players in the main Matchplay competition and a further 8 travelling reserves, who would either step up to the main event or compete in a daily Stableford competition.
The 35 lowest-handicap players gained automatic entry into the Championship, while the remaining 58 had to qualify on Sunday Despite the wind, spirits remained high as the Championship got underway. The automatic qualification cut-off was set at a handicap of 4 0, with the highest overall handicap at 98
Notable victories in the Sunday qualifier included Scott from the Int Corps, who defeated WO2 Matt Priston AGC 7&6, and Maj Gary Greaves R Sigs, who overcame Rgr Robin Ashe Inf 6&5. With those results, 29 players progressed from the qualifier into the main Matchplay starting on Monday morning, while those who did not advance took part in the scratch Monday Stableford competition This is a fiercely contested event in its own right, as the top 16 performers would qualify to compete from Tuesday in the Reserve Matchplay for the Keith Seddon Trophy
Keith Seddon Trophy players set off early on Monday morning into a brisk and persistent northerly breeze, which made scoring particularly difficult. The wind demanded accuracy and control throughout, especially on the more exposed holes Scores were generally low across the board, a fair reflection of the conditions and the scratch format The best round of the day was a determined 29pts from Capt Dipendra Rai RLC, enough to top the leaderboard. Second place was shared by WO2 James Bulter RE and WO2 Ramesh Pun R Sigs with 24pts
The main Championship also teed off on Monday at the same time as the Stableford competition, but on the East course Players faced strong winds that made early progress challenging However, as the day went on, the skies cleared and the sun broke through, offering a welcome improvement that lifted both morale and the standard of play. The field featured the best golfers in the Army, and the quality of golf reflected the occasion
Among the standout performances, LCpl Tom Sanghera REME overwhelmed his opponent with a 9&7 win, followed by SSgt Gaz Gurung RE’s emphatic 8&7 victory. LCpl Graeme Torrie RE eased through with a 6&5 win, matched by SSgt Rob Perrins RA’s commanding 6&4 result SSgt Jim Reeves R Sigs secured a solid 5&4 triumph, while Capt Neil Williams RA underlined his consistent form with a composed 5&3 win. Last year’s winner, Cpl Ross Greenwood RE, had to dig deep to edge his opponent 2&1 in a closely fought contest.
The afternoon round of the main Championship began under clear blue skies, with temperatures climbing steadily Despite the warmth, a persistent wind continued to test even the most experienced players, demanding precision and patience from tee to green Notable results included WO2 Dean Geoghegan Inf beating SSgt Bikash Gurung R Sigs 7&6, Sanghera defeating Cpl Jason Woods RLC 6&5, and Greenwood overcoming Cpl Steve Farnworth Inf 6&4.
The Denton Salver Trophy, held for those defeated in the first round of the Matchplay Championship, had no clear favourites given the high standard of golfers involved Notable scores included Sgt Tolok Gurung R Sigs beating Capt Zain Sharif AGC 7&6, and WO2 Ryan Davies RAPTC defeating SSgt Nil Thapa RLC 7&5.
Tuesday also brought the first handicap Stableford for those knocked out of the main and plate championships (Monday pm), as well as for those who had not qualified for the Keith Seddon Trophy (Monday am), and for the travelling reserves. Once again, the course and conditions proved to be testing, with finishing scores reflecting the challenge; only the top 14 players managed to break the 30point mark Leading the field on the day was SSgt Mahesh Gurung RLC with 36pts, followed closely by WO2 Mark McKenzie Inf and LCpl Elliot Homewood RE on 35pts, and Farnworth alongside Cpl Biraj Thapa AGC on 33pts SSgt Mahesh Gurung RLC is the 2025 Micky Bryant Memorial Trophy winner.
In the plate competition, winners progressing to the afternoon matches and the quarterfinals were: Ben from the Int Corps, WO1 Dave Grant AGC, Fus Harrison Benn Inf, Scott from the Int Corps, Maj James Page RLC, CSgt Thomas Purce Inf, SSgt Chris Rosie RE, and WO2 Ian Mahan Inf
In the main competition, some of the Army’s finest players faced each other, as is often the case at this stage. The hot sun and easing winds meant the course was running fast, and the greens had become slick and unforgiving; perfect conditions for matchplay drama All three top seeds advanced, with the standout result of the morning coming from Williams, who beat Sgt Ali Hennessey RE 5&4.
As the afternoon drew to a close on a sunsoaked East Course, the main competition quarter-finals produced a series of compelling matchups in near-ideal conditions In an allArmy clash, Sgt Glen Watt RAC claimed a comfortable 4&3 victory over Williams. Although the match was close early on, Williams faltered after the turn, dropping three key holes with bogeys to hand Watt the advantage, which he held with composure Gurung Gaz delivered the day’s most dominant performance, dispatching WO2 Kerry Roberts RA 6&5 in commanding fashion, his unrelenting consistency sealing the match with holes to spare. In what was billed as the clash of the day, defending champion
SSgt Mahesh Gurung RLC
Greenwood struggled to find rhythm in a tense battle against Army Development player Perrins Despite flashes of brilliance, Greenwood appeared to be battling both the course and himself, allowing Perrins to capitalise and secure a strong 4&2 win, staking a claim for full team selection. The final match of the afternoon saw a gritty contest between SSgt Matt Bruce-Smith AGC and Torrie Bruce-Smith mounted a determined back-nine push and had a 15-foot putt on the 18th to force extra holes, but the effort narrowly missed, allowing Torrie to edge the match 1Up in a thrilling finish. With the semi-finals now set, the competition promises more drama and high-calibre golf as the title race intensifies
The afternoon round of the plate competition also served up excitement Grant edged past Ben from the Int Corps 1Up, holding his nerve on the final green to book a semi-final spot. Benn, in contrast, delivered one of the most convincing wins of the day, defeating Scott from the Int Corps 5&4 with a display of consistent golf Purce overcame Page 2Up in a match that swung back and forth until later on, while Mahan beat Rosie 2&1, closing out their tense encounter on the 17th. All matches were tightly contested early, but a strengthening breeze played a key role in splitting the field over the back nine
In the afternoon session for the last eight in the quarter-finals of the Keith Seddon Trophy, Ashe proved too strong for SSgt Ishwor Pun R Sigs, securing a measured 4&2 victory. Rai Dipendra also advanced, defeating WO2 Darren Mathie RE 3&2 in a match where handling the wind was crucial WO1 Steff Gibbs R Sigs came through a competitive encounter with Maj Steve Hickey Inf, closing it out 3&1, while WO2 Ramesh Pun R Sigs overcame SSgt Sam Shrubsole REME 4&2, using the tougher conditions after the turn to take control
With semi-final line-ups now complete across all competitions, attention turned to who could handle the pressure, and the forecast, as the tournament entered its closing stages.
Wednesday began with an early start under a brightening sky, the sun already starting to burn through and lighter winds than had been seen over the previous three days. All was set for the final day.
First out were the semi-finalists in the Keith Seddon Trophy, the first year this competition had been played without Keith Seddon
himself overseeing proceedings as Tournament Director, following his retirement from the committee at the end of the 2024 season after some 30 years of service The opening match saw Ashe face Rai Dipendra, followed by Gibbs against Pun Ramesh
In the Plate competition, Grant faced Benn, while Purce went up against Mahan.
Finally, in the main Matchplay Championship, Watt took on Perrins and Gurung Gaz met his long-time rival Torrie
The day was, unfortunately, overshadowed by the deeply saddening news that a soldier from a Tidworth-based unit, known personally to several members of the RAC contingent, had been found to have taken his own life Such devastating news put the competition into perspective, with everyone’s thoughts turning to the family, friends, and colleagues affected in the wake of this tragic loss.
In true military fashion, players and officials pulled together and pressed on with the competition, though for those closely connected to the unit and colleague, the day was inevitably difficult.
After some outstanding ball-striking and precision play from all semi-finalists, the stage was set for three exciting and competitive finals in the concluding session of the Matchplay Championship.
The line-ups were:
Main – Perrins vs Torrie Plate – Benn vs Mahan
· Keith Seddon – Rai Dipendra vs Gibbs
In the Stableford competition, 84 players set off on the West Course, an equally demanding layout requiring careful course management, with greater risk and reward available to the longer hitters By this stage of the week, many players used the round as preparation for the upcoming Inter Corps Championship, to be played over the same course during the following two days. Once again, only the very best managed to post high scores While 27 players reached 30pts or more, only SSgt Jit Thapa RE managed to beat his handicap, carding an impressive 38pts. Sanghera and Bruce-Smith were also to be commended for scoring 35pts and 34pts respectively while playing off plus handicaps. Maj Pete McGann AGC took second place on countback with 35pts SSgt Jit Thapa RE is the 2025 Bartley/Taylor Trophy winner.
First to tee off in the finals was the Keith Seddon Trophy. Both players gave nothing away, with the match ebbing and flowing throughout Such was the closeness that it went to the 20th hole before being decided, with Gibbs prevailing WO1 Steffan Gibbs R Sigs is the 2025 Keith Seddon Trophy winner.
The Plate final proved just as tight, with the lead switching hands several times As the match reached its closing stages, Mahan seized the advantage on the 17th, hitting the long par-3 green from the tee and securing a par, while Benn could only bogey. A half on the 18th was all Mahan required to seal the victory, which he duly did. WO2 Ian Mahan Inf is the 2025 Denton Salver winner.
The main competition final was a different story. Torrie, a master of links golf, was always going to present a formidable challenge for Perrins The early stages were close, with neither player giving much away, but as they reached the turn, Torrie’s quality began to shine through Three birdies early on the back nine put the result beyond doubt, and Perrins was unable to recover. Torrie pressed on to claim a 6&5 victory. LCpl Graeme Torrie RE is the 2025 Paget Trophy winner.
The standard of play throughout the competition was outstanding, and sportsmanship remained exemplary, with many fine individual performances across the week. Congratulations go not only to the winners, but to all who took part

15th Women’s Matchplay Championship
After the successful format changes trialled in 2024, with the first two rounds played on the West Course and the remainder on the East, it was unanimously agreed to retain this structure for 2025 and future years If nothing else, it guarantees the women at least a fighting chance of reaching the BBQ in time for a burger.
With temperatures soaring well above what we’ve come to expect at Saunton in recent years, sun cream was in almost as high demand as water. One player was overheard claiming she got “an extra 40 yards of roll because the fairways were so hard”, although, judging by her expression, it was mostly sideways By the time prizegiving rolled around, half the field looked like they’d been slow-roasted, and the other half were frantically seeking out the nearest air-con vent and a glass of anything liquid, containing ice.
Despite having a full field of 16 confirmed ahead of the event, a number of unavoidable last-minute withdrawals due to injury, compassionate circumstances, and operational commitments meant the final field was reduced to 13. This presented a minor logistical headache, but the Championship proceeded as planned The top three seeds enjoyed an unexpected lie-in thanks to their byes into round two, proving that sometimes, working to bring that handicap down really does pay off!
Unfortunately, such occurrences are not uncommon in the women’s game, where the player pool remains relatively small This continues to highlight the challenging and unpredictable balance between service duties and sporting commitments. Nevertheless, the revised draw had no impact on the quality of play, nor the spirit of the event, both of which remained as high as the UV index It served as a reminder of the resilience and adaptability that so often define the competition
Day one, round one and the top half of the draw played out largely as expected, with some fairly emphatic results Cpl Lizzy Chapman RAMS lost 7&5 to Sgt Claire Ham AGC(SPS); LBdr Lizzy Griggs RA was defeated 8&6 by SSgt Kim Glynn AGC(SPS); and Cfn Ellie Skinner REME, a debutant this year, was beaten 6&4 by Maj Gina Smith REME.
The bottom half also followed the form book in terms of results, but the scores were another matter entirely. With only two matches played (thanks to those earlier byes), Sgt Emma Dann RCAM beat WO1 Vicky van Zyl RAMS 4&2, and ATpr Laura “Welly” McLean AAC produced an early upset, defeating Maj Kate Eastman RAMS, a former Champion and seasoned Inter Service player, 1Up. A warning shot across the bows of the competition? Quite possibly
With three players having received byes in round one of the Main competition, the Plate draw got off to a gentle start. Only one match was required to get the ball rolling. That match, however, had some sparkle: Chapman vs Griggs, dubbed “The Battle of the Lizzies”
With just five shots separating them in handicap, Chapman off 24 and Griggs off 19, this promised to be a tight affair. Chapman came out swinging, full of determination and good humour, but despite her best efforts and some flashes of brilliance, she eventually succumbed to the consistent play of Griggs, who took the match 5&3 A well-earned win and a match played with exactly the right mix of focus, sportsmanship, and just enough banter to distract from the fact everyone was slowly melting.
With the Main and Plate competitions both progressing, the quarter-finals promised some exciting contests, and they did not disappoint.
Glynn, a four-time past Champion, was drawn against Ham On paper, it looked favourable for Glynn, but Ham has quietly built a strong reputation over recent seasons, and she wasn’t about to roll over A hard-fought match saw Ham triumph 3&1, proving once again that past form is no guarantee of future success.
Cfn Eleanor Skinner REME
Meanwhile, Smith faced reigning Champion
Cpl Niki Sutton AGC(SPS). Sutton likely approached the match with caution, knowing that Smith has a habit of dragging games to the 21st hole at least But class won out, and Sutton edged the match 3&2
In the bottom half of the draw, Dann took on WO2 Mel van Zyl RAMS, securing a 4&2 win, perhaps an unwelcome surprise for the incoming Captain! The final match saw former Champion SSgt Abi Kennedy RE face off against McLean, who was riding high after her earlier giant-killing What followed was a gritty, close contest that inevitably went beyond 18 holes. Kennedy eventually closed it out on the 21st, but not before McLean gave her an almighty scare.
It’s worth noting that at the time of entry, there was a 13-shot handicap difference between Kennedy (2) and McLean (15), making the match even more remarkable. Taking a scratch game to the 21st is a feat in itself, especially when most of the field were already questioning their life choices by the 15th
For those knocked out in round one of the Plate or round two of the Main Championship, the Saunton Bowl offers a chance to keep the golf going in the form of a round of Stableford Nobody quite “shot the lights out”, but considering the heat and baked fairways, the scores were more than respectable: Glynn carded 31pts, van Zyl M 32pts, and Smith took the win and trophy with a solid 33pts. Given the conditions, even finishing with the same ball you started with felt like a triumph.
The semi-final line-up had all the hallmarks of a classic: Ham vs Sutton, and Kennedy vs Dann. Most observers would have predicted a Sutton vs Kennedy final, such was their form coming into the closing stages Sutton duly delivered on expectations, producing a composed and controlled performance to beat Ham 5&3. However, the real surprise came in the other tie, where Dann, having already dispatched van Zyl M earlier in the week, went one better and edged out Kennedy on the 19th hole after a tense and closely fought encounter A definite statement performance, and surely a certainty for Inter Service selection.
Finals afternoon arrived, and with it, two hotly anticipated matches In the Plate, Eastman faced Skinner Despite Skinner’s spirited play, Eastman, ever the Saunton stalwart, used her experience and course knowledge to take the match and the Bowles Trophy 5&4.
Still out battling the blazing sun were Sutton and Dann in the Main Championship final True to form, Dann wasn’t content with the standard 18 holes and forced a playoff, taking the match back down the first But Sutton once again showed why she is the reigning Champion, playing the first playoff hole with poise and precision to claim victory on the 19th.
Every match across the Championship was played in the best possible spirit: competitive, respectful, and filled with the kind of camaraderie that makes this event a firm favourite on the Army golf calendar.

The draw for the 51st Inter Corps Championship, generously sponsored by Army Sport, took place on Wed 9 Jul following the conclusion of the Matchplay finals, Prize Giving, and AGM It was conducted by Army Sport CEO, Maj Gen (Retd) Darrell Amison CBE, who was visiting the event as a guest, and overseen by Tournament Director, Capt David Thomas Int Corps A total of 17 teams entered this year’s competition: 12 ‘A’ teams (with RCAM not fielding a team) and 5 ‘B’ teams The RA and RE ‘A’ teams were seeded 1 and 2 respectively, as winners and runners-up in the 2024 Championship, with the remaining teams drawn at random. Before the main draw, a preliminary ballot was held to decide which of the ‘B’ teams would unfortunately miss out This year, RE (B) drew the short straw, leaving the rest to join the main draw. When Maj Gen Amison drew the names of the teams set to tee off at 0730hrs, one player called out “Thanks, Sir!” – a remark that sparked laughter and set a light-hearted tone for the competition ahead
Play on day one was briefly delayed due to a dense morning mist on the West Course, pushing the start back by 15 minutes. Once the sun broke through, it did so with intensity. Conditions became scorching, with temperatures steadily climbing throughout the day Fairways baked dry and ran firm, while the already fast greens demanded precise control. The course itself was unforgiving, narrow in places, with long, penal rough. Several matches saw players battle not only their opponents but also the relentless heat and testing layout Fatigue became a factor late in the day, particularly for teams facing tight turnarounds between matches
The first match was Inf (B) vs R Sigs (B). This clash went the distance, finishing level at 2½–2½, before R Sigs (B) held their nerve in the playoff to progress The second match saw AGC (B) face RAC, with the RAC team delivering a solid 3½–1½ victory Match three, REME (A) vs AAC, produced one of the most dominant displays of the day, as REME (A) whitewashed AAC 5–0, laying down a strong early marker In match four, R Sigs (A) faced RA, with the Gunners producing a composed and consistent performance to secure a 3½–1½ win In the fifth match, RE overcame REME (B) 4–1 in convincing fashion. Match six saw RAMS edge out Int Corps 3–2 in a tightly contested encounter that went down to the final pair Match seven, RAPTC vs AGC (A), was
dominated by AGC (A), who eased to a 4½–½ victory. The final match of the morning, Inf (A) vs RLC, saw Inf (A) overpower RLC 4–1.
As temperatures continued to rise into the afternoon, the relentless heat took its toll across both the main and plate competitions Fatigue tested physical and mental resilience, prompting the committee to take precautions, including placing iced water bottles at various points around the course. One trip to the local Tesco reportedly emptied the store of its small bottled water supplies and all ice Player safety remained the main concern throughout the day
In the plate competition, Inf (B) showed strong early form, securing a 3½–1½ victory over AGC (B) AAC delivered one of the most dominant performances of the afternoon, brushing aside R Sigs (A) 4½–½ REME (B) claimed a solid 3–2 win over Int Corps, while RAPTC impressed with a confident 3½–1½ victory over RLC. Despite the soaring temperatures, RAPTC maintained a strong tempo and were rewarded with a deserved win
In the main competition, R Sigs (B) edged past RAC 3–2 in a closely contested encounter, holding their nerve in the decisive matches. The RA narrowly defeated REME (A) 3–2 in another tight battle RE prevailed over RAMS
Spectators lined the fairway, watching every swing and secretly judging every putt.
4–1, and the final match of the day, Inf (A) vs AGC (A), extended well into the evening. With both sides tied 2½–2½, the outcome was decided by a playoff under fading light Torches were needed to illuminate the flag for approach shots, but sufficient light remained to complete the hole in Infantry’s favour Inf (A) held their nerve to edge out AGC (A), the final putt dropping just before 2200hrs.
As the sun set on a gruelling day, players from all teams earned admiration for their stamina, sportsmanship, and commitment under testing conditions
Day two of the Inter Corps Championship was shaped not only by excellent golf but also by soaring temperatures, prompting the Championship committee to take swift and sensible action To safeguard player welfare, the format was adjusted: four holes were removed from the main competition, and three from the plate and Stableford competitions, creating shortened rounds. It was also decided that the Stableford competition (REME Shield) for those eliminated from the afternoon main and plate rounds on Thursday would not serve as a qualifier. Additional water stations were again placed around the course to help players cope with the intense heat.
In the REME Shield, the long week had clearly taken its toll RAMS endured a particularly tough day, with one player withdrawing due to injury. The final standings were: 8th – RAMS with 68pts, 7th – RLC with 84pts, 6th – AAC with 86pts, 5th – AGC (B) with 91pts, 4th – RAC with 92pts, 3rd – Int Corps with 104pts, 2nd –AGC (A) with 105pts, and REME (A) topped the leaderboard with 106pts as the 2025 REME Shield winners.
The plate final teed off under glorious conditions. Both sides, buoyed by strong semi-final performances, were determined to finish with silverware RAPTC, chasing their first Inter Corps golf trophy in nearly 15 years, employed a bold and calculated team strategy Accepting early defeats in two matches (losing 7&6 and 7&5), they focused on securing the remaining three points. As matches ebbed and flowed, momentum swung repeatedly, and with the overall score tied at 2–2, the contest came down to the final match Capt Ashley Allen RAPTC reached the green in two on the 15th, while Mahan of Inf (B) found himself short of the greenside bunker. His chip spun back into the bunker, proving decisive. Allen held his nerve, and RAPTC capitalised to secure a historic 3–2 victory, ending a 15-year wait for Inter Corps silverware RAPTC are the 2025 Singapore Trophy winners.
On the West Course, the plate semi-finals produced two decisive results. Inf (B) powered through R Sigs (A) 4–1 The second semi-final was tightly contested, with RAPTC defeating REME (B) 3½–1½
Over on the East Course, the main Championship semi-finals delivered highquality encounters. R Sigs (B) faced a formidable RA side and were edged out 3–2 In the other semi-final, favourites RE demonstrated their class with a commanding 4–1 victory over Inf (A), securing a place in the final.
With both finals set, anticipation built for an exciting climax to the Championships, with teams battling for silverware and Corps pride

The main final unfolded in spectacular fashion. The contest between RE and RA was finely poised, with momentum swinging throughout Williams struck first, winning 4&3 for RA, before Gurung Gaz responded with a 4&2 victory over Perrins to level the match at 1–1. Torrie then delivered a clutch 3&2 win against Army Vice Captain Roberts, nudging the Sappers ahead 2–1. The fourth match ended all square, leaving the result dependent on Greenwood vs WO2 Cornelis Mostert RA Greenwood edged ahead on the closing holes, holding his nerve to secure the win and a 3½–1½ triumph for RE, avoiding the need for a playoff. RE are the 2025 Royal Irish Rangers Bowl winners, capping an exceptional tournament with depth, resilience, and deserving victory

CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2025 AGA Stableford Championship once again returned to Whittington Heath GC, a venue now firmly associated with this competition We were also very pleased to confirm during the season that the AGA has secured Whittington Heath GC as the host venue for the foreseeable future, providing welcome continuity and allowing the championship to continue building on its strong foundations
As ever, we were warmly welcomed by the members and staff, and the course was presented in excellent condition throughout.
Early August provided favourable conditions Warm spells, light cloud cover and a gentle breeze created an excellent setting for competitive golf The fairways were in superb condition, the greens smooth and consistent, and the rough suitably penal for anything slightly offline. Whittington Heath once again proved to be a fair but exacting test
With a strong and competitive field assembled, three rounds of Stableford golf lay ahead and, from the outset, it was clear that consistency would prove decisive.
Round one began in settled conditions and scoring was steady across the field Players quickly found their rhythm, with 16 competitors scoring 36pts or better
Lt Col Aaron Gracey set the early pace with an excellent 41pts, closely followed by CSjt Purna Garbuja and Sgt Adrian Bennett on 40pts The leaderboard was tightly packed, leaving little margin for error and no opportunity for complacency The question was whether the leaders could carry their form into round two.
The Stableford format once again demonstrated its appeal A difficult hole could be contained, yet momentum could quickly build for those able to string together a sequence of solid holes
Round two brought significant movement. LCpl Logan Gregory produced the standout performance of the day with an impressive 43pts, having managed only 28pts in round one Unfortunately for him, his aggregate score lifted him only to 12th place in a rapidly improving field. Gracey, having signalled his intent with 41pts in round one, was unable to maintain that pace and posted 35pts in round two, although he still sat comfortably in 3rd overall
As the second round concluded, the leaderboard remained congested, with only a handful of points separating the leading players The course continued to reward positive play while punishing anything overly ambitious More than one competitor spent additional time in the rough, which showed little interest in returning golf balls promptly. Mr Ian Bosley, always there or thereabouts, recorded another steady 38pts to move to 76pts after two rounds and sat just four points behind the end of day leader, Garbuja, on 80pts Bosley was determined to claim the title, but Garbuja was not his only obstacle Gracey was well placed in 3rd, also on 76pts, and Mr Biraj Pun Purja, just one point further back on 75pts, remained firmly in contention.
The final round brought slightly more breeze but remained warm and fair With three competitive rounds in succession, fatigue began to feature. Concentration and course management proved just as important as ball striking.
Three rounds ultimately proved one too many for Garbuja, who played well over his handicap and returned 27pts, dropping to 10th place overall. Pun Purja ground out an excellent final round and, even with 39pts, it was not quite enough. In a championship defined by consistency, Bosley delivered rounds of 38pts, 38pts and 39pts to secure the 2025 AGA Stableford Championship with a winning total of 115pts
Finishing just one point behind on 114pts was Pun Purja, whose closing 39pts kept the pressure on until the final cards were signed In third place on 112pts was Bdr Daniel Young, edging Cpl Lloyd Thomas and Gracey on countback in an exceptionally tight finish
The top ten were:
1. Mr Ian Bosley – 115pts
2 Mr Biraj Pun Purja – 114pts
3 Bdr Daniel Young – 112pts
4 Cpl Lloyd Thomas – 112pts
5 Lt Col Aaron Gracey – 112pts
6. Sgt Brett Evans – 109pts
7. Capt James Lightfoot – 108pts
8. SSgt Neil Buckingham – 107pts
9 WO2 Tom Appleton – 107pts
10 CSjt Purna Garbuja – 107pts
With just three points covering the top three positions, the championship remained in doubt until the final group had completed their round and the cards were verified.
In the scratch competition, Bennett delivered the most consistent gross performance, posting rounds of 34, 28 and 25 scratch points to claim the Scratch Championship title with a total of 87 scratch points. It was a very solid performance, with Mr Roger Crook finishing 2nd on 80 and SSgt Dale Birch 3rd on 78
Our sincere thanks go to Thales, our headline and event sponsor, for their continued and valued support of the AGA Stableford Championship. Their commitment plays a significant role in the ongoing success of this event
We also extend our gratitude to Army Sport for their financial support, which enables the AGA to continue delivering high quality competitive opportunities for Army golfers.
We thank the President, Captain, Club Manager, professional staff, catering team and greenkeeping team at Whittington Heath GC for presenting the course in outstanding condition and for their continued hospitality and professionalism.
Finally, we thank all of the officials who give up their time to support these events Without them, there would be no competitions
With the venue secured for the foreseeable future, the AGA Stableford Championship remains well placed to continue thriving at Whittington Heath GC, and we look forward to returning again this season for another competitive and enjoyable event

The 2025 Inter Regional Championship was once again hosted at our regular venue, Worksop GC, on Wed 3 Oct 25 The course was presented in excellent condition despite the recent spell of hot weather The fairways had been recently scarified as part of the ongoing maintenance programme following the hot weather, which made the course play like a true heathland course, while the greens were immaculate, fast, true, and a credit to the greenkeeping team
Most competitors took part in the practice round, which followed the annual match between the AGA Committee and Worksop GC and generated over £700 for the Captain’s nominated charity Unfortunately, the match finished with a result very similar to those of recent years Clearly, Worksop know how to select a winning team. The contest proved somewhat one-sided, with Worksop running out worthy winners by five matches to nil
The competition format remained unchanged in time-honoured tradition, with Greensome Pairs Stableford in the morning and Singles Stableford in the afternoon, all played with the relevant handicap allowances. This year’s field comprised ten teams of six players, with the Eastern region fielding two teams On Championship day, the teams set off in pairs for the morning Greensomes competition. Light winds and intermittent drizzle did little to trouble the field, and some excellent scores were returned. Leading the way with 43pts were Northern Ireland’s opening pair, LCpl Shaun Clare and Capt Craig Docherty Close behind were WO2 Rob Delamar and Mr Mark Field from the North West, followed by Maj Steve Johnson and WO2 Michael Seely from Eastern 2, with both pairs returning 38pts.
At the close of the morning session, Northern Ireland and Eastern 2 led the way on 109pts apiece The North West sat just behind on ggg
106pts, followed by the South East on 104pts and Scotland on 103pts The remaining scores and positions were North East on 100pts, Eastern 1 on 99pts, West Midlands on 97pts, Wales on 95pts, and the South West on 88pts This left the championship finely poised heading into the afternoon Singles matches.
The afternoon Singles commenced in brighter conditions as the sun broke through, but heavy rain showers soon returned intermittently, making scoring difficult The fairways, still recovering from the summer’s high temperatures, further added to the challenge. As a result, most scores were in the low to mid-30s, lower than the averages of recent years
As results began to filter in, four teams emerged as genuine contenders: Northern Ireland, Scotland, North West, and Eastern 2. With the lowest score from each team of six discounted from the totals, there was scope for dramatic swings of up to 10pts, keeping the outcome wide open Notable contributions included WO2 Paul Spencer with 35pts and CSgt Ben Lake with 37pts from Eastern 2, along with the best score of the day from Capt Lewis Ramsbottom from North West, who returned 39pts These performances proved decisive in shaping the final standings

END OF SEASON TOURNAMENT AND DINNER
Following the success of previous years, the 2025 End of Season Tournament and Dinner returned to Whittington Heath GC on Thu 9 Oct 25, with the kind permission of the Club and its members. Having proven in 2024 that the combination of golf and dinner worked superbly, the decision to repeat the format was an easy one
The golf was played as a Florida Scramble, with teams of four selected to ensure competitive balance. As in previous years, an automated online team generator was used to allocate teams, tee times and Team Captains, creating plenty of interest and anticipation in the clubhouse ahead of the draw Players were divided into four handicap pots, based on their WHS index, with each team comprising one low-handicap player, one high-handicap player and two midhandicap players. This approach resulted in closely matched teams and a genuinely competitive field throughout the day
Unlike the rain-soaked challenges of previous events, the weather in 2025 was exceptionally kind. The course was presented in excellent condition and played firm and fast, contributing to some impressive scoring throughout the field
As always, the format required each team member to contribute a minimum number of drives, preventing any single player from carrying the team and placing an emphasis on teamwork, strategy and calm decisionmaking under pressure This proved decisive, with all teams separated only by countback after remarkably similar scores
The competition was extremely close, with Team 13 ultimately claiming the title of “Most Golf” after an extraordinary countback process Having finished level after the back 9, back 6, back 3, back 1 and front 9, the tie was finally decided on the front 6, underlining just how finely balanced the contest was!
The presentation dinner followed, with players, officials and guests enjoying an excellent meal and a relaxed atmosphere after a long and demanding day on the course
After dinner, the first awards of the evening were presented to the winners of the Corps League Divisions 1 and 2, with REME securing Division 2 and RAPTC taking Division 1 This represented an extraordinary achievement for RAPTC, having won Division 2 only last year
The Men’s and Women’s Players of the Year, along with the Women’s Players’ Player award, were then recognised Those delivering the citations spoke passionately about the recipients, making it clear that all three were thoroughly deserving of their awards. The Women’s Player of the Year, WO2 Mel van Zyl RAMS, joined the presentation via FaceTime, as she was unable to attend the day in person
The final presentation of the evening was made to Jana Daniell, who finally departed the Army Golf and Winter Sports department in November, having already been once farewelled at the Matchplay in July. Jana’s outstanding commitment, effort and hard work over several years have been invaluable She will be greatly missed by everyone connected with the AGA, and we all wish her every success in the future.
A huge thank you goes to Philips for sponsoring the event and providing prizes and golf balls for all players We look forward to continuing our partnership in the future As always, our sincere thanks also go to our main sponsors, Thales, PXG and Pozitive Energy, for their ongoing support throughout the season.
The event once again demonstrated the strength of the Army Golf community, combining competitive sport, good humour and camaraderie in excellent surroundings

WOMEN’S CAPTAIN’S REPORT by WO2 Mel van Zyl
Committee
The 2025 season was a busy and eventful year for Army Women’s Golf, with a full fixture list and several changes within the committee With WO1 Burrell-Knipe stepping down as Captain, WO2 Kim Glynn was selected to assume the role. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, she relinquished the Captaincy to WO2 Mel van Zyl following the Army Matchplay Championships in July
Further committee changes saw Maj Gina Smith step down from her role as Development Officer. Following interviews with several candidates, WO1 Matt Priston was appointed to the position, bringing with him a wealth of experience and valuable contacts He was supported in this role by Sgt Kirsty Kennedy as his 2iC
Aldershot GC
As is tradition, the season-opening fixture against the Army GC at Aldershot provided an excellent opportunity for development players to partner with first team members This fixture allows developing golfers to experience representative competition while playing against the ever-welcoming Army Women GC Unfortunately, the match resulted in a loss for the Army Women WO2 Mel van Zyl and Cpl Amy Coles, alongside Maj Gina Smith and Cfn Ellie Skinner, both secured half points, with the overall score finishing at 3–1.
Development
With the appointment of a new Development Officer, WO1 Matt Priston was keen to introduce a training day open to both development and established players. Sgt Claire Ham kindly arranged a short game training session at her home club, the Chase Golf and Country Club, on 16 Apr 25 The session was led by the club professional, Matt Fielding, who delivered a comprehensive
chipping clinic covering club selection for varying lies, followed by an in-depth putting session. The day concluded with nine holes of golf, allowing players to put newly acquired skills into practice The session was designed to support golfers of all experience levels and provided a valuable opportunity to enhance performance across the squad
Matt Fielding during a putting clinic
The next fixture on the calendar was the match against Burnham and Berrow Women In stark contrast to the torrential rain experienced the previous year, the 2025 fixture was played in calm and sunny conditions The Army Women approached the match with the aim of reclaiming the trophy Played in a Better Ball format, the Burnham and Berrow side fielded an exceptionally strong team, and despite determined efforts from the Army Women, the hosts secured a 4–0 victory and retained the title.
Army Strokeplay Championship
On an individual level, Cpl Niki Sutton represented Army Women’s Golf at the annual Army Strokeplay Championship held at Liphook GC Competing in a field of 72 players, she was the sole female competitor Rising to the occasion, she delivered a series of composed and consistent performances, returning scores of 82, 83, 84 and 83 across the four rounds. These efforts secured her an impressive 19th-place finish and reflected her ability to compete at the highest level of Service golf
High Handicap Championship
The High Handicap Championship returned to Test Valley GC in 2025 and welcomed four female competitors, each making her debut at an AGA Major Capt Freya Bowen, Cpl Amy Coles, Sgt Loreen Siaga and SSgt Emily Murphy all represented Army Women’s Golf, marking a positive step towards increased participation and inclusion within the event. All four players performed admirably, with Capt Freya Bowen narrowly missing out on the Championship title by just two points, an outstanding result for her first appearance at this level
UKAF Mixed Pairs
The UKAF Mixed Pairs competition was held for the third time at South Staffordshire GC The event consists of one female and one male player per pair, with a handicap Two-Ball Better Ball Stableford round in the morning, followed by a Foursomes Stableford round in the afternoon A total of 11 pairs from across all three Services competed, with six pairs representing the Army The championship was won by a Royal Navy pair, with Sgt Emma Dann and LCpl Jonny Stevenson finishing in second place, and WO2 Mel van Zyl and SSgt Matty Bruce-Smith securing third.
Police Service UK
The annual fixture against Police Service UK was held at St Michaels GC in Scotland. The two-day match began with foursomes on day one, followed by eight singles matches on day two Despite the Army Women competing strongly and producing several closely contested matches, the PSUK team proved formidable and secured a 7–1 victory overall

Army Matchplay Championship
The Army Women’s Matchplay Championship at Saunton GC once again proved to be a highlight of the calendar The field included one new entrant, Cfn Ellie Skinner, while Airtpr Laura McLean, known as Welly, returned for her second appearance and delivered an exceptional performance, defeating several players with lower handicaps than her own The competition culminated in a final between Sgt Emma Dann and Cpl Niki Sutton On the 18th hole, with Sgt Dann holding a one-hole lead, a difficult greenside bunker shot resulted in a precarious lie, allowing Cpl Sutton to force a playoff Demonstrating the composure expected of a reigning champion, Cpl Sutton played the 19th hole with confidence and precision to claim the championship for the fourth time.
Coaching Session with Martyn Thompson
In preparation for the Inter Service Championships, WO1 Matt Priston secured the services of world-class coach Martyn Thompson A former PGA Tour player and long-standing Head Professional at Parkstone GC, Martyn also served as Vice Captain of the GB and Ireland PGA Cup Team from 2015 to 2017 The coaching session was held at Cumberwell Park GC and began with an indoor simulator assessment, where individual swing adjustments were made to improve ball striking. Following lunch, the session moved to chipping and bunker work before concluding with nine holes of golf. The day provided players with invaluable technical insights and practical skills that contributed positively to their performance
Inter Service Championships
The Inter Service Championships were held at Saunton GC, a familiar venue for the selected Army Women players. The event was played in some of the most challenging weather conditions experienced in recent years, with persistent rain and winds exceeding 45 mph at times These conditions tested every player and official involved, making it a true measure of resilience and commitment to Service representation.

On day one, Army faced the RAF. The RAF established a strong lead following the morning foursomes, leading 3–1 Undeterred, the Army Women responded strongly in the afternoon singles, winning six of the eight matches to secure a 7–5 victory
On day three, with no respite in the weather, Army faced the Royal Navy. The Navy took a narrow lead of 2 5–15 before lunch In the afternoon singles, the Army Women made an excellent start, winning the first four matches to take control However, the Navy required 3.5 points from the final four matches to retain the title on countback and ultimately won all four, securing a 6.5–5.5 victory.
Tylney Park
The final fixture of the 2025 season took place at Tylney GC This long-standing fixture continues to provide valuable opportunities for development players to compete alongside experienced team members. Despite a 3–1 loss, the fixture was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved, with the course, camaraderie and warm hospitality of the Tylney Women contributing to an excellent conclusion to the playing season
Army Golf Association Dinner
The season concluded with the Army Golf Association Dinner at Whittington Barracks Sincere thanks are owed to Steve Davis and Diane Walters for organising an excellent evening. It was a fitting opportunity to recognise the efforts of those involved in Army Golf throughout the year WO2 Mel van Zyl was awarded the Walters Trophy for Players’ Player of the Year, while Cpl Niki Sutton was named Player of the Year. She enjoyed an outstanding season, achieving a top 20 finish at the Army Strokeplay Championship and winning the Army Matchplay Championship for the fourth time In addition to her Service golf achievements, she won the Women’s Club Championship at Tidworth, securing both the Centenary Bowl and the Hatter Cup, and broke the course record with a gross score of 74. She also remains an active and respected member of Wiltshire County Golf, further enhancing the profile of Army Golf within the wider golfing community
On a personal note, I would like to thank the committee and all players for their unwavering support throughout the challenges of the season Not only in support of me, but in the way they supported one another I have never been prouder to be part of a group that consistently encouraged, competed and played for each other, regardless of results. This truly was a team effort
I very much look forward to what the next season will bring

MEN’S CAPTAIN’S REPORT
The 2025 season marked my second year as Army Men’s Captain During this period, we continued to adapt the size of the squad through sustained investment in player development that began in 2024. Once again, through collective hard work, we saw new players represent the Army at Service level, and this remains a key focus as we move forward There were some changes within the committee, with WO2 Kerry Roberts stepping into the role of Vice Captain, Capt Jordan Aird delivering as Development Officer, and SSgt Chris Kelly assuming the G4 responsibilities as Team Manager.
The 2025 season was led by optimism following a successful 2024 season, balanced with the clear understanding that the Army Men’s Team was firmly within a period of transition. Our goals mirrored those of the previous season, with the principal objective of retaining the 2024 Inter Service title The efforts and hard work of the committee throughout the year deserve significant recognition They set the standard in the delivery of Army Golf, and this is felt directly by the players at the ‘coalface’. As Captain, my continued aim was to provide opportunities for talent to represent the Army, and this was again achieved, with 27 different players representing the Service during the season
The main goals for the 2025 season were:
Maintain the Army Men’s Squad numbers, key to the Corps-led identification of talent
Maintain development levels towards Inter Services 25 across all players within the squad.
Liaise closely with Corps Secretaries to support player development.
Maintain clear lines of communication with players
Maintain the established team ethos and work collectively towards the team mission.
by Capt Scott Dickinson
Sustain training opportunities within team selections. Continue to underpin success as a metric of selection, through winning matches both individually and as a team, while developing talent opportunities Retain the Inter Service Trophy
The 2025 season can again be viewed as a positive one. We achieved the majority of the objectives that were set at the outset, narrowly missing out on retaining the 2024 Inter Service title following a close final at Saunton GC It goes without saying that my sincere thanks go to all players and committee members for their efforts throughout the season. While we remained in a transitional phase, the squad demonstrated its strength and resilience, and we looked ahead to the next season with confidence
Across all fixtures in 2025, the Army Men’s Team utilised no fewer than 27 players, highlighting the depth of talent within the wider squad. Five Army colours were awarded during the season, bringing the total to 11 over the past two years, reinforcing our commitment to development and selection opportunities The Inter Service team also welcomed new faces, with three players selected who had progressed through the development squad, a clear indicator of the pathway in place This trend will continue to be a priority, ensuring service representation opportunities are available throughout the season
Our firm first fixture against Hayling Island set the tone for the year, providing an excellent opportunity to assess the wider squad for 2025 Although the team narrowly lost, the use of predominantly development players reflected our early season objectives. The annual Brent Knoll Bowl at Burnham and Berrow GC followed, where Team Army fielded a strong side and secured the title in a hard-fought contest, approaching the fixture with a clear intent to win
In June, Capt Jordan Aird led the Army team at the Inter Service Development Team Championship at Thonock Park, Gainsborough Team Army emerged as Inter Service Development Champions, securing our second title in three years Two players from this fixture progressed to Inter Service selection later in the season, further validating the development pathway and its role in supporting Army first team selection. The Development Inter Services also provided three new players with the opportunity to represent the Army at this level, following progression through individual Corps selection. Subsequent fixtures against Cheshire County and the Civil Service resulted in an Army loss and an Army win respectively.
Prior to the Inter Service Championships, the Army Team conducted a development and training camp at Saunton GC Although the Inter Service team had not yet been announced, this camp provided 12 players with the opportunity to train, compete, and share skills in a challenging environment. It also strengthened cohesion between development players and the elite side of Army Golf The squad was divided into two teams, with individual match play and foursomes mirroring Inter Service formats This training period set clear standards ahead of the Championships, reinforcing team ethos and identifying further training opportunities within the squad.

Winning Captain - Capt Jordan Aird
The Inter Service Championships were held at Saunton GC in Devon, a venue well known to the team, though less familiar were the challenging weather conditions experienced throughout the week Effective use of the practice rounds saw Team Army face the RAF, with Lt Adam Stone, Capt Jordan Aird and WO2 Dean Geoghegan all making their Inter Service debuts. A strong performance in the morning foursomes laid a solid foundation for the singles session, securing Army’s place in the final and moving one step closer to retaining the 2024 title
In the final, Army faced the Navy in extremely testing conditions, with a howling gale and intermittent rain impacting play throughout the day The morning session concluded with the scores level at 2 and a half matches apiece The afternoon singles became a straight shootout, with matches finely balanced through the front nine. The demanding back nine at Saunton proved decisive, and most matches progressed to at least the 17th hole Ultimately, the Navy secured victory by a single point, winning 8 points to the Army’s 7 While narrowly missing out on retaining the title, it was an outstanding contest, and every player can take great pride in their efforts. Particular recognition must go to LCpl Tom Sanghera, who once again went undefeated throughout the week for the second consecutive year, an exceptional achievement
through extremely wet conditions. SSgt Rob Perrins captained the side at the Cornish Piskey in Cornwall, where Army sought to retain the 2024 title The team again reached the final but suffered a narrow defeat, and the Cornish Piskey remains a clear focus for the 2026 season.
The Army Golf end of season dinner was held at Whittington Heath GC and provided an opportunity to recognise individual performances from the 2025 season LCpl Tom Sanghera was deservedly awarded Army Men’s Player of the Year, having been a consistent presence in the team and setting the standard with two unbeaten Inter Service campaigns As LCpl Sanghera departs the Army, we wish him every success in the future He has been a shining example to young Army golfers, demonstrating that ability and commitment will always be rewarded with opportunity. Lt Adam Stone, SSgt Jit Thapa, Sgt Ben Dawson, Cpl Gaz Dewer and Gdsm Louis Martin were all awarded Army sporting colours for their representation during the season
Reflecting on 2025, the season matched the success of the previous year, and leading the team as Captain continued to be both an honour and a privilege While narrowly missing out on Inter Service success, our focus on development delivered tangible results, including reclaiming the Development Inter Service title and progressing players into the first team environment. This approach will remain central as we continue to identify, develop and refine talent in pursuit of further success
In closing, I extend my sincere thanks to all players who represented the Army throughout the season. Together, we have built a strong foundation based on a clear team ethos of competition and winning My thanks also go to the Army Men’s Team committee, WO2 Kerry Roberts, Capt Jordan Aird and SSgt Chris Kelly, whose support, insight and commitment were invaluable in selections, performance delivery and the countless additional hours dedicated to supporting the players
We have set a high standard as a team and will look to raise it further in the coming season. Finally, thank you to the Regional Secretaries, Corps Secretaries and AGA members for continuing to identify and promote talent Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and I very much look forward to seeing many of you across the fixtures in 2026
The latter part of the season included the Graham Butler Trophy at Ferndown and the Cornish Piskey at Newquay GC WO2 Kerry Roberts captained the side at the Graham Butler Trophy, guiding the team
2025 Inter Service Team and support staff
As we bid farewell to another year, it is time to reflect on the achievements of the Eastern Region Golf (ERG) during my second year as Secretary Army Golf is more than just a sport; it is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and camaraderie of our players Balancing the demands of work, life and golf is no small feat, and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all players for their continued commitment. Your efforts ensure the ongoing success of the Eastern region A special note of thanks must also go to Ian Barnes and Tim Shaw for their invaluable support at events, as their behind-the-scenes contributions have been instrumental throughout the season.
During 2025, the ERG hosted five successful events and entered two teams into the Inter Regional Championship From Stablefords to the prestigious Bogey Trophy, competitions were fiercely contested and showcased both the talent and spirit of our players. While participation levels remained strong, the Army is committed to increasing sports engagement this year, and I encourage everyone to help grow our numbers even further Let’s look back at some of the highlights from last year.

Lakes GC
The third event of the season took place at Peterstone Lakes GC, a true gem just outside Newport. Designed by Bob Sandow and opened in 1990, the course is complemented by an excellent clubhouse and offers a flat parkland layout measuring 6,000 metres, or 6,600 yards, with a par of 72
The course features numerous natural and man-made water hazards that test even the most experienced golfers, alongside an abundance of wildlife that adds to its character The slope rating was higher than usual, providing players with additional strokes, which was very much welcomed
The weather was superb, with firm fairways allowing the ball to run, resulting in shorter approaches and some exceptional scoring The turnout was excellent, and the conditions contributed to a highly competitive event
Congratulations to Dave Boocock on a remarkable victory.

Autumn Meeting – 24 Sep at Creigiau GC
The Autumn Meeting was held at Creigiau GC, a beautifully presented parkland course located on the north western edge of the village of Creigiau, near Cardiff Established in 1921, the club offers an enjoyable yet challenging test for golfers of all abilities.
The course is renowned for its tight, tree-lined fairways, rewarding accurate tee shots and disciplined course management A mix of shorter par fours and longer holes keeps players engaged throughout, with the 520yard par five 8th hole standing out as a particular highlight. Excellent facilities further enhance the experience.
The competition was an 18-hole Stableford event played from the yellow and red tees While not overly long, success depended on
course knowledge and staying out of the trees Despite recent wet weather, the course was presented in excellent condition, and the greens ran true.

Winter Meeting – 30 Oct at Cradoc GC
The final event of the year was held at Cradoc GC, set against the spectacular backdrop of the Brecon Beacons National Park Located just two miles from the historic market town of Brecon, the course is renowned for its natural beauty, mature tree-lined fairways, and views of Pen y Fan, a mountain well known to Infantry soldiers
The weather was kind, if a little dull and blustery, but importantly remained dry The competition was an 18-hole Stableford event, and the challenging conditions were reflected in the scores. Despite this, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended
Following the round, a well earned drink and hearty meal provided a fitting end to an excellent day of golf and camaraderie.

As Chair, Secretary, and occasional golfer, I would like to personally thank everyone who attended our events and supported Wales region throughout the 2025 season It has been a pleasure meeting you all and sharing many enjoyable moments, along with the inevitable highs and lows of this wonderful game A special thank you goes to Kim, whose assistance with on the day organisation has been invaluable I look forward to seeing you all again this year Happy golfing!
Spring Champs – 19 Mat at The Oxfordshire GC
On an extremely warm and windy day, the South East region competed at a former European Tour venue, The Oxfordshire GC. The course had previously hosted the Benson & Hedges International for four years, the Andersen Consulting World Championships, and the Ladies English Open Designed by world-renowned course architect Rees Jones, the Championship course features 135 bunkers and four unmissable lakes. Strategically contoured holes blend effortlessly with the surrounding countryside, creating a links-style course that challenges golfers of all abilities
Many of the game’s greats have competed here, including Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Faldo and Darren Clarke.
Thirty-two members of the South East region arrived eager to take on the first tee, with the Stableford format promising a competitive day. With multiple on-course prizes available, all players were encouraged to play to the end to remain in contention. The windy conditions and 135 bunkers made for a demanding test, yet a very respectable 36pts was enough for Ian Stones to secure the title of Spring Champion Ricky White edged out Raj Tamang on countback to claim second place.
Summer Champs – 17 Jul at Weald of Kent
During a blisteringly hot July, we played at The Weald of Kent GC, an 18-hole parkland course set in rolling Kent countryside with farreaching views. The course features numerous elevations, lakes and hazards, providing a challenge for confident players, while the well-maintained and wide fairways offer a fair test for less experienced golfers
Twenty-two members of the region took part, competing for both gross and nett prizes. The course was in excellent condition despite the dry season, with greens and fairways receiving praise from all players Club selection, particularly on the par 5s, proved critical, with several balls finding water either off the tee or short of the green. Due to a technical fault and the Secretary’s poor memory, the results for the Summer Champs have regrettably been lost However, the eventual winner must have performed exceptionally on the day
Autumn Champs – 21 Oct at Royal Ascot GC
Rich in history and set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Royal Ascot GC offers a rare combination of tradition, modern golf facilities and social, dining and corporate opportunities Established by Queen Victoria in 1887, the club originally occupied Ascot Heath before relocating to Ascot Farm in the south-west corner of Windsor Great Park, Berkshire, with the current course officially opening in August 2005.
The Autumn Champs used a nett Stableford format, with additional prizes for gross winners, allowing handicaps to level the playing field Of the 33 players entered, competition was tight, with only a handful of points separating the top ten. Countback decided second place, while the winner, Hugh McGarvey, secured victory by a single point
A Note of Thanks
As my first year as Secretary of the South East region, I would like to thank every golfer who attended an event in 2025. It has been a pleasure to run the region and facilitate events for all members across the South East. WO1 Matt Priston left the region in excellent order, and now, with my feet firmly under the table, I intend to continue building on his work
An individual thank you goes to WO2 Paul Wildish, who, although not officially appointed, has acted as my second-incommand, sounding board and on-course helper throughout the year Your support has been invaluable
Autumn Champion - Hugh McGarvey
2025 was a good year for golf within the South West region. The region held three main competitions - Spring, Summer and Winteras well as two of the planned four matches, with a large number of our members also attending the AGA Majors and representing their Corps and Units.
SW vs South Winchester GC - 2 Apr
The first event of the season was an away match against South Winchester GC. This was a great event where we were very well hosted. Who doesn’t love a full English breakfast to start the day? The course was in great condition for early April We came close but ended up on the wrong side of a very tight match
Spring Meeting - 10 Apr at Cumberwell Park GC
This was a change from our usual season start at Tidworth and, once again, the course was in excellent condition Entries were from across the ranks, genders, veterans and age spectrum, which was great to see.
The greenkeepers must have enjoyed placing the pins for us, as scoring proved difficult There were a few good scores, but most were generally around 29pts to 31pts The winning score of 38pts from Chin Thapa was closely followed by Tek’s 37pts, continuing his good form. He had played to one over on his previous outing and was cut three shots, so well done to him It was a mixed day for the Gurkhas, who took both winners’ prizes and the Most Golf award
Summer Meeting - 24 Jun at Upavon GC
With 25 players teeing it up, the day started with bacon rolls and a quick refresh on the rules before we headed out into blustery conditions that proved a real challenge. Drives of over 300 yards were soon followed by hitting driver into a 200-yard par 3
The morning round was followed by a buffet lunch, which was very much needed There was plenty of food with a great variety to suit everyone. The wind seemed to strengthen as the day went on and, for most, the golf did not improve much
The event was sponsored by PXG Sammy, one of their representatives, joined us for the vgggv
golf and played a few holes with most groups in the morning before playing the afternoon mainly with one group She also stayed on to present the prizes
There was some good golf played in parts by everyone, but over 36 holes it was consistency that proved to be the key. A few players managed to plot their way around in good order Prakesh Gurung finished on 153 to pip Bob Owens by a single shot, while Aaron Gracey finished with a nett 147 Well played to them all
SW vs Defence Academy - 11 Aug
The annual match against the Defence Academy was held at Defence Academy GC Our team of eight came second in nearly all the matches. Local course knowledge and keeping the ball in play proved key, and they did it better than we did on the day
Due to commitments and a change of dates, our match against Kingsdown in August was cancelled as no suitable alternative date could be arranged. The same applied to our match against Rodway Hill.
Winter Meeting - 28 Oct at Tidworth GC
The weather was cold to start but soon warmed up into a decent day, considering it was the end of October. The course was in good condition, with the greens slower than usual However, that did not stop the plus one golfer from four-putting the 10th
Roger Antolik shot an impressive 37pts to take the nett first place. The gross winner was Army Women’s Matchplay Champion Niki Sutton with a one under par 71 Watching Niki score her one under was just like being on the Ladies Professional Tour, not because of the quality of the golf, which was exceptional, but because she always seemed to have either Mel or me raking bunkers, repairing divots and pitch marks I even think Mel pushed her trolley up one fairway
Inter Regional Championship
The South West region entered a team into the Inter Regionals Unfortunately, due to a late withdrawal through injury, only five players arrived Many thanks go to Chris Bartley, who not only acted as the starter but nn
also stepped in to play in the foursomes. The
Overall, the season was a great success, with lots of new faces, which is always encouraging Thanks go to everyone from the n
region who attended the events, and a special thank you to those who helped with the organisation, particularly at the matches. As a region, we also welcomed Niki Sutton, who volunteered to act as Assistant Secretary
We look forward to this season

Individual Championship and Grand Final
The season concluded with the Individual Championships and Grand Final at Catterick GC This prestigious event brought together the top performers from the league, with 52 golfers competing in a fitting finale.
The course provided an excellent stage for personal achievement, as players competed for the titles of NE Champion (38 entries) and NE Veteran Champion (14 entries) The competition delivered both drama and precision, with the leaderboard shifting throughout the day.
The NE Individual Champion was Cpl Steve Harrison (40pts) 1 Yorks The Veterans title was claimed by Mr Myles Gilmour (39pts), finishing

Looking Ahead
The 2025 season reaffirmed the strength of Army Golf in the NE region, built upon discipline, sportsmanship and a shared passion for the game. As we progress through 2026, plans are already in place to further enhance the competitive calendar, with new venues and refined formats aimed at continuing this positive momentum
To all participants, organisers and supporters, thank you for contributing to such a successful season. The foundations laid in 2025 have positioned us strongly for continued growth and success in 2026
A Note of Thanks
On behalf of the Army Golf Association Northeast, we extend our sincere gratitude to our outgoing Golf Secretary, Major (Retd) Neil Bulmer, for the dedication and commitment shown in delivering the 2025 season
From organising fixtures and managing handicaps to encouraging golfers of all standards and ensuring smooth administration behind the scenes, his efforts were central to the league’s continued success
As he moves into retirement, we wish him every success in the next chapter. We are pleased that this is not a farewell to Army golf, and we look forward to seeing him back on the fairways in the Veterans competitions
In golfing terms, he guided the league steadily from tee to green It is now time to enjoy a well-earned walk to the 19th hole.
Thank you for everything.

The Royal Engineer Golf Society (REGS) enjoyed an outstanding and historic year, highlighted by success on the course, individual excellence and a landmark centenary celebration that reinforced the Corps’ proud sporting tradition
The centrepiece of the year was the celebration of the REGS centenary To mark this significant milestone, the Sappers embarked on an overseas tour to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, USA. The tour combined competitive golf with opportunities to strengthen international military sporting links and foster esprit de corps among players Competing on a variety
of challenging courses, the tour proved both memorable and fitting for such an important anniversary.
On the competitive front, and in line with the Corps motto “Ubique” (everywhere), the Sappers achieved notable success within Army Golf The team secured victory in the Inter Corps Championship, demonstrating depth and consistency across all matches. Individual performances were equally impressive. At the Army Strokeplay Championship, Sappers made up 4 of the top 5, with Lt Adam Stone claiming the title on debut with an excellent display of composure and technical skill In the Army Matchplay
Championship, LCpl Graeme Torrie emerged victorious for the second time, showcasing resilience and competitive determination throughout the tournament.
Capping the season, this success was further reinforced with a win in the prestigious Cowley Cup against the Royal Artillery, underlining the Corps’ strength in both team and individual matchplay formats. The Cowley Cup fixture holds the world record as the oldest team fixture in golf to be held at the same venue, running since 1895 at The Royal St George’s GC
The 2025 season of AGC golf started with the Overseas Sports Visit (OSV) to South Africa, which must have been an incredible experience, offering the opportunity to play on some of the country’s finest golf courses while fostering camaraderie among players of various ranks. It was also a great platform for the younger generation to learn about the organisation and commitment required for tours of this nature
Congratulations to Cpl Niki Sutton for retaining the Army Women’s Matchplay Champion title, especially in such dramatic fashion with a play-off hole What an achievement It is also encouraging to see an increase in participation, particularly with more women getting involved This growth in interest and diversity within the team is undoubtedly a positive development for the Corps and the sport as a whole. As a committee, we have worked tirelessly this year to encourage veterans and reservists to attend as many events as possible to improve inclusion
Representation across the Army continued to be a point of pride, with Sappers selected to represent the Army in both male and female categories. This reflects not only the high standard of golf within the Corps but also the inclusive and progressive nature of Royal Engineer sport
Overall, 2025 has been a year of celebration, success and continued excellence, ensuring Royal Engineer Golf remains a leading force within Army Golf as it moves confidently beyond its centenary year
REGS would not be able to achieve what we do without our amazing sponsors. A huge thank you to:

Inter Corps Championship
After three years, the team finally managed to enter both teams into the competition due to the RE team being balloted out. With a strong field from the other Corps, the A team, consisting of SSgt Matt Bruce-Smith, Capt Bhuvan Thapa, WO1 David Grant, Cpl Biraj Thapa and Pte Bhupal Gurung, progressed to the semi-final but were unfortunately knocked out by a very talented Infantry team.
The B team, consisting of Capt Zain Sharif, WO1 Matt Priston, Lt Col John Price, Sgt Kurt Mannell and Sgt Claire Ham, were narrowly defeated by the RAC
Corps Championships - Cumberwell Park GC
A fantastic field representing all branches saw 52 players battle through biblical weather in a 36-hole scratch, nett and Stableford competition, giving all players the opportunity to compete across different formats. The players were very grateful for the ggg
Sappers at the Inter Corps Championship
visit from the Corps SM, the event providing him with an insight into the challenges within this area of sport, and more importantly, reinforced the ethos of sport for all.
Another highlight was seeing Pte Katie Pinnington in her first major event After a hard-fought battle, SSgt Matt Bruce-Smith retained his status as Corps Champion with a score of 144.
Matches and Inter Corps League
Last year was successful in terms of participation and representation. Over six matches, 40 different golfers from a possible 48, teed it up, which is a record. The days of struggling to field a side and relying on the same faces appear to be behind us following 2024’s challenges
25% of those players were completely new to our matches, and last year’s tour to South Africa also saw six rookies take part.
Opportunities to represent the AGC in golf are clearly available, and it is hoped that 50% of attendees at this spring’s training camp will also be rookies.
Match results were one win, two draws and three losses The final match versus Remedy Oak GC is yet to be played at the time of writing While results are always welcomed, representation remains the primary aim, unlike some other Corps.
Army Championships
Six members of the AGC team travelled to Saunton GC for pre-qualifying ahead of the main event. Four players achieved excellent results against some of the best golfers serving in the Army Hopes that SSgt Bruce-Smith could challenge the top three seeded players came to an unfortunate end when he was beaten by the number one seed in the quarter-finals.
However, there was significant success as Cpl Sutton AGC(SPS) retained her Army Women’s Matchplay Champion status following a closely fought contest against a very talented opponent Well done again, Cpl Sutton
Training and Development - OSV South Africa
By WO2 Jase Moore (Tour Organiser):
The AGC golf team conducted their triennial major tour to the Western Cape area of South Africa in Apr 2025. This time of year in South Africa is ideal for golf and, coupled with ggggg
fantastic food and drink and a favourable exchange rate for the rand, it proved an exceptional destination for 12 golfers to test their ability. They were certainly tested, completing nine rounds across a variety of course types, all of which provided a worthy examination of their skills
This was the second tour to South Africa, the first having taken place in 2015, and hopefully not the last. Golf was interspersed with visits to an elephant sanctuary in Knysna, the penguins at Boulders Beach during a day trip around the Cape of Good Hope, and Table Mountain All golfers had a fantastic time and spoke highly of the Western Cape as a destination.
Funding trips of this nature, particularly in golf, which is an expensive sport, is always challenging but was greatly supported by the Corps, the Army Sport Lottery, the Berlin Infantry Brigade Memorial Trust Fund and various other sports funds.
Two new tourists this year, LCpl Fraser Whyman and Sgt Rob Heath, shared their reflections below
By LCpl Fraser Whyman (Part 1):
The AGC overseas golf tour to South Africa was nothing short of spectacular, combining challenging golf with breathtaking scenery The trip began at Simola GC in the Knysna region, providing the perfect warm-up round. The first day of competition took place at Pezula GC, where sea mist and coastal winds tested everyone’s game
The team competed in the Pezula competition and produced some impressive low scores. The first round of the team Stableford competition was held at Kingswood GC, known for its immaculate conditioning and challenging greens LCpl Browring shot an impressive 36pts, giving him a healthy lead going into the next round
The team arriving in the Cape
After Knysna, the team travelled to Pinnacle Point Golf Estate for a team scramble
Perched on cliff edges overlooking the Indian Ocean, it was a visual highlight of the trip and a clear favourite The second Stableford round was played at Arabella GC Unfortunately, rain made conditions challenging, but it remained an enjoyable experience on one of South Africa’s top-ranked courses
The tour combined competitive spirit with camaraderie and unforgettable scenery, making it a truly special experience
By Sgt Rob Heath (Part 2):
Our first day in Cape Town included sightseeing around the Cape Peninsula, including Boulders Beach and its colony of African penguins Some members of the group even braved the Atlantic waters The team also visited Cape Point and other picturesque areas within Table Mountain National Park.
The first round in Cape Town was at Westlake GC, a parkland course set against the Silvermine Mountains It offered an opportunity to open up the swing and lose fewer balls after some of the more demanding courses. In a better ball format, the winning score was 41pts from members of the AGC team
Clovelly Country Club was next, nestled in the Silvermine Valley. This tight and testing course challenged the team, and as the wind strengthened in the afternoon, it proved particularly demanding on the back nine
The final round was played at Pearl Valley GC, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course and a true test for all abilities. The round concluded with a loss, reinforcing how valuable local knowledge can be on a course of such standing
By WO1 Matt Priston and Sgt Andy Lund
The RMP and SPS Branch Championships were held simultaneously. A par 70 course, Hurtmore offers a challenge for golfers of all abilities, with bunkers, lakes, firm fairways and smooth greens Despite changeable weather, spirits remained high throughout the day
The 1 MP Bde Championship saw players and veterans compete for the Provost Trophy. After a closely fought finish, WO2 Ryan Ellis, CPU, retained his 2024 title Second place went to Cpl Stephen ‘Mr Reliable’ George, an RMP mounted troop veteran The best gross score was awarded to Sgt Robert Heath with an excellent 74 gross.
The SPS Championship was equally competitive, with several leaderboard changes as rounds concluded In line with the two-prize rule, players could only win one title, whichever they placed highest in. The Cyril Caws Cup for best Stableford score was awarded to Cpl Sam Foster, with Sgt Ash Richardson in second place The Cliff Challenge Trophy went to SSgt Narayan Thapa, with WO2 Mal Burn finishing second The Meek Memorial Trophy was won by WO1 Matt Priston with a superb one under par gross round, finishing ahead of 2024 winner Col (Retd) Stephen Pyle. A special mention goes to Pte Kate Pinnington as the sole female competitor and to WO2 Cary Grant for eagling the par 4 7th hole and sharing the Twos prize pot
AGC Sports Awards
The AGC Sports Awards was a memorable event for the golfers in attendance Being among so many talented sportsmen and women was both inspiring and humbling. The evening, complemented by fine dining and excellent company, was a fitting celebration of sporting achievement across the Corps
Summary
AGC Golf welcomes all levels of ability, experience and gender to its annual fixtures and major events, with participation numbers increasing throughout the season We continue to reach out to new players to strengthen team cohesion and foster healthy competition against other Corps.
I conclude by extending a sincere thank you to the CHQ team for their continued support through funding and the development of our younger generation
