Inter Regional Championship 2025

The 2025 Army Inter Region Championships were once again hosted at our regular venue, Worksop Golf Club, on Wednesday 3 September 25 The course was presented in excellent condition despite the recent spell of hot weather The fairways had been recently scarified as part of the ongoing maintenance programme following the hot weather which made the course play like a true heathland course, while the greens were immaculate fast, true, and a credit to the greenkeeping team

This year’s field comprised ten teams of six players, with the Eastern Region fielding two sides. Most competitors took part in the practice round, which followed the annual fixture between the AGA Committee and Worksop Golf Club and generated over £700 for the Captain’s nominated charity

The AGA Committee played their annual match against Worksop, unfortunately the match finished with a result very similar the those of recent years. Clearly Worksop know how to select a winning team, one that contains receiving a high number of shots from the opposition The match proved somewhat one-sided, with Worksop running out worthy winners by five matches to nil

On Championship Day, the teams set off in pairs for a morning greensomes competition. Light winds and intermittent drizzle did little to trouble the field, and some excellent scores were returned Leading the way with 43 points were Northern Ireland’s opening pair, LCpl Clare and Capt Docherty Close behind were WO2 Rob Delamar and Mr Mark Field from the North West, followed by Mr Steve Johnson and WO2 Seely on 38 points.

Joint third place was shared between several strong pairings: WO2 Craig Butler and Capt Lee Fuller (South East), Capt Kenny Wilson and Mr Brian Innes (Scotland), CSgt Lake and Cpl Sewell (Eastern 2), and Capt Philip Stillie and WO1 Osamah Al-Khaldion (Eastern 2), all on 36 points

At the close of the morning session, Northern Ireland and Eastern 2 led the way on 109 points apiece. The North West sat just behind on 106, followed by the South East on 104 and Scotland on 103 The remaining scores and positions were: North East (100), Eastern 1 (99), West Midlands (97), Wales (95), and the South West (88) This left the championship finely poised heading into the afternoon singles matches.

The afternoon singles commenced in brighter conditions as the sun broke through, but heavy rain showers soon returned intermittently, making scoring difficult The fairways, still recovering from the summer’s high temperatures, further added to the challenge As a result, most scores were in the low to mid-30s, lower than the averages of recent years.

As results began to filter in, four teams emerged as genuine contenders: Northern Ireland, Scotland, North West, and Eastern 2 With the lowest score from each team of six discounted from the totals, there was scope for dramatic swings of up to 10 points, keeping the outcome wide open. Notable contributions included Mr Spencer (35 pts) and CSgt Lake (37 pts) from Eastern 2, along with the best score of the day, Capt Lewis Ramsbottom (39 pts), all of which proved decisive in shaping the final standings

In the end, these performances made the difference, and the final positions were:

1st – Eastern 2 (263 pts)

2nd – North West (257 pts)

T3rd – Northern Ireland (251 pts)

T3rd – Scotland (251 pts)

5th – Wales (249 pts)

6th – Eastern 1 (247 pts)

7th – South East (244 pts)
