COLLECTION OF LOTS

We are pleased to offer two weeks free storage for all lots purchased from this sale. However, owing to a busy sale schedule, all lots not collected by 4pm on Thursday 16th October will be transferred to Sackville­West Moving & Storing in Andover, where they will be available for collection from Tuesday 21st October. Lots will be unavailable for collection on the 17th to 20th October as the items will be in transit. Please note, handling and storage charges will be applied from 8am on Tuesday 21st October.

On acceptance of a delivery quotation with Sackville­West Moving & Storing, they will waive any storage fees if they are instructed by the purchaser to deliver to them within 2 weeks of the quotation, however transfer fees will still apply. They provide competitive deliveries to much of the UK, and offer twice weekly trips to London and across the south of England. Woolley & Wallis clients are eligible for a 10% discount on their first booking with Sackville­West.

Placido Zuolaoga was a Spanish sculptor and artist who became renowned for his damascene decoration, inlaying gold, silver, and other metals into an iron or steel surface. He was praised in his day as ' a second Benvenuto Cellini'. His first recognition as an artist came in 1855 when, together with his father Eusebio, they exhibited at the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris where an anonymous visitor commented that 'One cannot praise too highly the arms and other metal objects presented by the Sres. Zuloaga, father and son.....iron­chiselling, damascene, etching and repoussé never had interpreters of such obvious and varied talent'.

Huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera) literally translates as 'yellow flowering pear' wood which is a member of the rosewood family. It was predominately found on the island of Hainan and was the wood of choice for the Emperor and the elite during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Catalogue Note

A paper label inside states ‘This wardrobe was given by The Countess of Waldegrave to her Great Nephew John Sancroft (possibly) Holmes in 1865. The birds were inlaid by a man at Battle in Sussex in the year 1757.’.

Sarah, Countess of Waldegrave (1787 ­ 1873) was born Sarah Whitear, a clergyman’s daughter, at Hastings Old Town Rectory. Her first marriage was to Edward Milward, a wealthy businessman and Mayor of Hastings, using her position and wealth to help the poor of Hastings and the surrounding area. She subsequently married William Waldegrave, 8th Earl Waldegrave.

Catalogue Note

By repute this galloping gig was the property of Queen Victoria at Osborne House. A photograph in the Royal Collection dated May 1899 shows young ‘David’ later King Edward VIII and ‘Bertie’ later King George VI playing in a similar gig at Park Cottage.

The original ‘Lines’ company was trading in the period c.1880 to 1930 variously as G & J Lines or J & G Lines, the initials referring to the two brothers, George and Joseph Lines. They operated a number of small factories in North London, making a wide range of toys.

William Oddie is almost certainly the owner, and not the maker, of this mortar. A William Oddie apothecary, died in Clitheroe, Lancashire in 1764. This mortar has several common features, including the small heart motif, thin cords and style of the numerals, comparable to mortars made by Ralph Ashton (fl.1703­1728). See M. This mortar is described M. Finlay, English Decorated Bronze Mortars & their Makers, p. 155. The footnote to the John Fardon sale catalogue, Christie’s, 1st May 1996, lot 63, refers to two possible Thomas Rogers, one at North Loftus, died 1684, the other from South Elasball (sic. possibly South Elmsall, West Yorkshire). The footnote to the Roger Rosewell sale catalogue, Bonhams, 21st January 2015 lot 63, notes other possible candidates, including a Thomas Rogers, who married Mary Freeman in York, 1677, or the Thomas Rogers who married Jane Watson in York,1642. It is, of course, entirely possible Rogers was not a native of York, or even Yorkshire, as mortars were commissioned on occasion from founders who were not local to the buyer. See for example, a mortar made for Roger Warde, an apothecary of York, by the Whitechapel Foundry of London’, illustrated in M. Finlay, English Decorated Bronze Mortars & their Makers’ p. 70.

One of the most complete Elizabethan beds recorded, the panelled tester carved with flowerheads set within guilloche carved rails, with the design repeated on the cornice and frieze, the headboard with a pair of recessed arcaded panels centred and flanked by acanthus carved uprights, the whole flanked by scroll and flowerhead carved ears, the substantial end posts carved with jewelled strapwork, above gadrooned cup and cover turning, the plinths flowerhead and nulled carved 209.5cm high,173cm wide, 218.5cm deep

Catalogue Note

The Godolphin family’s extensive wealth generated from tin mining helped to build parts of the present grade one listed manor house. It is recorded that the future King Charles II stayed at Godolphin House in 1646. In 1786 the house was inherited by Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds, as the widower of Lady Mary Godolphin. The duke chose not to live at Godolphin and the house was subsequently rented out, including to a succession of local tenant farming families throughout the 19th century. In 1937 Sydney Schofield, the Suffolk based son of the American Impressionist artist Walter Elmer Schofield bought Godolphin. In 2007 the Scholfield family sold the house to the National Trust and selected contents, including this bed, were sold in 2008.

Catalogue Note

The tiered bands of decoration on this chest bear a resemblance to a select group of 15th century chests which originated around Lincoln, with examples surviving in the churches of Glentham, Fillingham and Ewerby. A further related chest, in the Victoria and Albert Museum (museum no. W.69­1916), according to the donor, Robert Mond, F.S.A, came from a farmhouse near Stamford, Lincolnshire. The furniture historian R. W. Symonds, writing in the Connoisseur, 'The Regional Design and Ornament of Joined Furniture', June 1948, pp. 90­96, suggests that further related chests, were produced in a single workshop, in the village of Watford, Northamptonshire. THE MITTON HALL TABLE. A WONDERFUL CHARLES I OAK SIX­LEG REFECTORY TABLE C.1640

with a highly impressive matching two­board top, with cleated ends, the frieze carved with Trough of Bowland regional tightly­curled scrolls, centred by the marriage initials ‘IP’ over ‘MP’, all remaining frieze rails channel run moulded and with integral scroll profiled spandrels, on six cup and cover bulbous turned legs, joined by robust rectangular section peripheral stretchers and a central cross stretcher, an inscribed line at the right hand end of the top indicated former use as a shuffleboard, along with the indication of a catch box

Tobias Jellinek, Early British Chair and Seats 1500 to 1700, pp. 179­181, devotes an entire chapter to ‘Durham Armchairs’. The author lists the chairs separately due to their unique nature of being ‘certainly made in one particular workshop, and possibly by one craftsman; no other group of chairs can be specified in this way’. At the time of publication only twelve Durham armchairs, with another reputedly at Knole House, were recorded. The Durham chair is distinct from other similar period chairs in having a slender opening below the back panel.

each knife with cannon handle engraved with panels of feathered lozenges and a single flowerhead to cap, both with iron blade, one with cutler’s mark, probably Ephraim How, the other replaced and marked by Garrard, C.1850, with Royal ‘VR’ cypher, one knife with a crowned ‘T T’ maker’s mark, possibly for Thomas Townley, London. Both forks and spoons with trefid ends, finely engraved foliage and mask to front of stem, similar engraving and vacant oval cartouche to reverse. Each spoon again with mark of ‘T T’ (6)

BIDDING AT AUCTION

See below for the different options for bidding. Please note that you may be asked to provide two forms of identification, even if you have bid with us before, in order that we are compliant with Money Laundering Regulations.

BIDDING IN THE ROOM

To bid at auction you will need a paddle number. This can be obtained from client services either during the view or on the day of the sale.

COMMISSION BIDDING

If you are unable to attend the sale you can leave a commission bid. This will be executed on your behalf by the auctioneer who will purchase the lot as cheaply as possible bearing in mind any reserve price and other bids.

TELEPHONE BIDDING

It is usually possible to bid on the telephone by prior arrangement with client services

LIVE ONLINE BIDDING

Live online bidding is now available free of charge for most of our auctions via bid.woolleyandwallis.co.uk, enabling you to take part in the bidding from anywhere in the world live as it happens.

BUYER’S PREMIUM

The Buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 27% plus VAT @20% (totalling 32.4% inclusive) on the first £20,000 and 26% plus VAT @20% (31.2% inclusive) thereafter.

CONDITION REPORTS

The relevant department will be pleased to give condition reports on any lot, where practical. All weights and measures given in the catalogue should be regarded as approximate.

The colours printed in the catalogue are not necessarily true.

EXPORTING YOUR PROPERTY FROM THE UK

If you are exporting your property, import taxes, customs duties and other fees may apply at the country of destination. It is also your responsibility to ensure that your shipment can be lawfully imported to the destination country.

Please note that due to the withdrawal of the Retail Export Scheme by HMRC, we are unable to provide VAT refund documentation (C88) for hand­carried exports.

In order to qualify for a VAT refund, your lots must be exported by a shipper and valid export documentation must be provided.

PAYMENT AND CLEARANCE

Payment is due immediately after the auction in pounds sterling. If you are a first time buyer we will need your name, address and bank details and will require funds to be cleared before purchases can be released.

Where practical, payment can be made and purchases collected during the auction.

We reserve the right to add storage charges to all lots not collected within 30 calendar days of the sale. This will include a handling fee of £20 (+ VAT) per consignment and a storage charge of £2 (+ VAT) per lot per day. No goods will be allowed to be collected until these charges have been paid.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL PURCHASERS

We are pleased to offer two weeks free storage for all lots purchased from this sale. However, owing to a busy sale schedule, all lots not collected by 4pm on the Thursday 16th October 2025 will be transferred to Sackville­West Moving & Storing in Andover. The items are subject to a handling charge of £20 (plus VAT) per lot and to a further storage charge of £3 (plus VAT) per lot per part or full day thereafter. Please note for large consignments there may be additional charges. These charges will be the sole liability of the purchaser and will be billed direct to them by Sackville­West Moving & Storing – the new sister company of Vangaroo Ltd. On payment of all sales and storage costs, items will be available for collection from 8am on Tuesday 21st October 2025 by appointment from Sackville­West Moving & Storing (Andover SP10 3SA): tel: + 44 (0) 2080 909988, email: office@sackvillewest.co.uk. Lots will be unavailable for collection on the 17th to 20th October 2025 as the items will be in transit. These charges are set by Sackville­West Moving & Storing; we recommend that you contact them directly regarding queries relating to these charges and other questions relating to storage. Staff at the saleroom will unfortunately be unable to answer questions relating to items that have been removed from the saleroom. On acceptance of a delivery quotation with SackvilleWest Moving & Storing, they will waive any storage fees if they are instructed by the purchaser to deliver to them within 2 weeks of the quotation, however transfer fees will still apply. They provide competitive deliveries to much of the UK, and offer twice weekly trips to London and across the south of England. Woolley & Wallis clients are eligible for a 10% discount on their first booking with Sackville­West.

ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHT / DROIT DE SUITE

Lots marked with a Φ symbol are potentially subject to a levy.

Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death.

Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500.

Droit de Suite, which is not subject to VAT, will be added to the buyer’s purchase price and then passed on to the relevant collecting agency.

FIREARMS

Lots marked Ƒ in the catalogue, or by any other means identified as controlled firearms, are subject to the UK firearms/shotgun licencing regime, and should only be viewed/purchased by individuals with appropriate licences. It is the responsibility of the bidders to ensure that they are legally authorised to acquire the lot that they are bidding for. In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will re­offer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.

Valuations are a core part of our business and are usually carried out by a senior specialist or directors. Accuracy, speed and above all confidentiality are paramount.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual client’s needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
