THE CORNISH COLLECTION

PETER CORNISH (1941-2017

Peter Cornish was a designer, maker, manager and educationalist.

He was born in 1941 into the devastation left behind by the London Blitz and between 1946 and 1951 he lived with his family in a Nissen hut in Brixton; 1946 was one of the coldest winters on record.

From this rather unpromising beginning Peter found himself at newly opened Kingsdale School, south London, one of the first comprehensive schools in the UK. He soon emerged as a talented artist and with the support of his teachers was encouraged on his educational journey. Following a foundation year at Goldsmiths College he enrolled at Beckenham School of Art where he studied what was recognised as the ground breaking 3D design course set up by furniture designer Robin Day. From here he won a place at the Royal College of Art where he found himself absorbed in the rich and stimulating talent of the 1960s design revolution. During this period, he married his childhood sweetheart, Patricia.

Peter quickly found employment at Avalon Furniture who were looking for young designers to respond to the taste for contemporary design. This necessitated relocating to Clevedon where he recorded the first piece for his personal collection, a Lalique bowl.

Moving back to London in 1967, he began his collecting adventures in earnest, which included innumerable trips to Portobello Road Market with his young family in tow.

Over the next twenty years he worked for Avalon, Lebus and Meredew, later Stag Meredew. He held several positions from general manager, design director to company director, although his passion remained design.

As tastes in furniture changed Peter decided to move away from manufacturing and found employment at Buckinghamshire College of Art & Design, where his skills as a manager and his broad interest in all forms of art made him an ideal leader for the College. He retired as Vice Dean in 2009.

Retirement provided him with the time to focus on his passion for collecting and making. Throughout his life he had designed and made furniture that paralleled his interest in the Arts & Crafts movement, which for him employed tangible processes, accessible technologies and beautiful materials. He was also a great raconteur ensuring his collections were always brought to life with exciting stories of context, people and aesthetics.

Leonard Walker was a prominent painter and stainedglass designer whose studio was based in Hampstead, London from 1911. Over the course of his career, he created stained glass windows for a wide range of religious and secular buildings across the UK and internationally

Although modern scholarship has largely overlooked Walker’s contribution to stained glass, he was a prolific and widely recognised artist during his lifetime. His work was frequently featured in both local and national press, reflecting the high regard in which it was held.

Walker began producing stained glass in the 1890s, but most of his output dates from the 1920s onwards. Among his most significant works is The Ascension at St Chad’s Church, Bensham, Gateshead (c.1916), executed in the Arts and Crafts style. His international reputation was further cemented when he received an honourable mention at the Paris Salon in 1921 for a stainedglass roundel depicting two Chinese vessels at sea, part of his commission for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Hall in Singapore (1923). In 1925, he was awarded the Diplôme d’honneur at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, an accolade that made him the only English artist to receive such a distinction that year.

In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. VALUATIONS

Valuations are a core part of our business and are usually carried out by a senior specialist or directors. Accuracy, speed and above all confidentiality are paramount.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual client’s needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

Woolley & Wallis valuations are accepted by all leading insurance companies.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
