JEWELLERY NOTICES

Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular lot. These certificates may have been obtained by Woolley and Wallis or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Woolley and Wallis and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale, or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.

Not all images are lifesized, and weights and measurements in the catalogue are approximate only. It is common practice for coloured stones including jade to be treated to enhance their appearance. This includes jade that has been bleached (usually in acid), polymer/resin filled or dyed, or a combination of any of these treatments. Prospective buyers should presume that all coloured stones sold by Woolley and Wallis have been treated unless stated to the contrary in the catalogue description. Please contact the department for more information regarding enhancement and treatment of coloured stones, and for condition reports which are available on single item lots.

Pearls known and guaranteed to be cultured or natural are described as such in the cataloguing. Where the origin of a pearl is unknown and not guaranteed, it is described simply as a ‘pearl’, and it will be specified in the cataloguing as untested. Pearls described in this way are guaranteed to be pearls and not simulants, but their origin is not guaranteed as either natural or cultured. Items described as ‘seed pearls’ have also not been tested and cannot be guaranteed as natural pearls.

All diamonds included in this sale have been tested using a specialist device that detects labgrown diamonds. We can therefore confirm that the diamonds included in this auction are natural.

Any dispute as to the authenticity of a lot, including signatures, age and condition, and as to the treatment of gemstones including pearls, synthetic diamonds and HPHT enhanced diamonds, must be brought to the attention of Woolley and Wallis within two weeks of the sale date. Woolley and Wallis do not guarantee the working order of mechanical movements at the point of sale and beyond.

£60,00080,000

A verbal report from GCS (no. 57853682) states that the pearls are natural saltwater Already desirable for the quality of its natural pearls, the present lot is particularly interesting for the striking design of its large scrolling clasp. Van Cleef & Arpels first introduced this new style of jewellery with the release of the ‘Flamme’ brooch in 1934. This design, which has now achieved iconic status in Van Cleef & Arpels’ oeuvre, pioneered the shift away from the angular and more abstract geometric forms of the earlier Art Deco period. Its scrolling design, similar to a flame, from which the French name ‘Flamme’, introduced the taste from more organic forms and gentler curvilinear shapes that heralded the taste for the softer style of midcentury jewellery. With the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Modern, this new taste for curves and arabesques was firmly established, and the tone was set for the following two decades. Skilled craftmanship was at the heart of this new style, with the large design houses sourcing their pieces from the exceptional workshops active in Paris at the time, including that of Charles Profilete. Into the 1950s, the popularity of scrolling features in jewellery continued, often featured alongside natural pearls. Van Cleef & Arpels famously combined these elements in Princess Grace of Monaco’s marriage set, dated 19551956, which included a threestrand pearl necklace detailed with two bold scrolling links. The present lot is firmly set within this tradition, and speaks of all the quality and exceptional design that characterises Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery.

Provenance: Purchased Sotheby’s, Magnificent Jewels, 5th December 2012, lot 63 for $25,000

One of the best loved of all Art Deco features is the use of chinoiserie motifs, and no more so that in Cartier’s creations from this period. The present lot displays all the skill and quality that sets apart the maison’s adoption of Chinese forms and materials in the 1920s, as it searched across Egypt, India and the Far East for inspiration to create a new modern style. The vanity case offered here, with its striking carved jadeite plaque centring the hinged cover, clearly speaks of the Art Deco fascination for opulent materials, innovative forms and a subtle nod to cosmopolitan luxury that made the allusion to China particularly popular at the time. However, there is an additional surprisingly subtle reference to Chinese forms in this piece: its white enamel decoration. Clearly of Art Deco taste in its simple, clean design at variance with earlier, more intricate decorative finishes, it is specifically of Chinese inspiration. In creating this new design of enamel decoration, Cartier looked to traditional Chinese silks, which often featured striated panels as part of their composition. The maison developed two types of enamel decoration from this source: pékin, typified by bold, wide striations, and the finer mille raies, from the French ‘thousand rays’. It is this more delicate variant that can be seen on the present lot, subtly lending this case its Art Deco feel and nuancing the Chinese theme to its composition.

Cf. Olivier Bachet and Alain Cartier, ‘Cartier: Exceptional Objects’ (Palais Royal, 2019), p.138, for another example of a Cartier vanity case of a similar date decorated with mille raies enamel.

733 LOUIS MARUZZI, AN ART DECO DIAMOND AND ONYX BRACELET, CIRCA 1925, composed of pierced links pavéset with old circularcut and singlecut diamonds with baguetteshaped onyx in milligrain settings, forming a trompel’oeil woven pattern, in platinum, French control marks and maker’s mark, length 17.5cm £20,00025,000

The geometric elegance and precision setting of the present diamond bracelet are characteristic of Louis Maruzzi (active 1911–1944), an Italianborn jeweller established at 10 rue de la Vrillière, Paris. Maruzzi’s workshop operated at the heart of the city’s high jewellery district and became a trusted manufacturing partner to leading maisons, most notably Van Cleef & Arpels. In the 1920s and 1930s, as the maison expanded its repertoire of platinum and diamond creations, it relied on a network of master ateliers to execute designs with absolute fidelity to its aesthetic ideals.

Maruzzi was particularly admired for his mastery of articulated platinum mounts—engineered for both structural integrity and suppleness—and for his finely graduated pavé setting that maximised scintillation without sacrificing line purity. The articulated openlink pattern of this bracelet, with its rhythm of diamondset panels alternating with precisely engineered connectors, reflects the Art Deco fascination with architectural form and mechanical precision. Its restrained luxury, where geometry frames brilliance, mirrors the Van Cleef & Arpels ethos of the era: jewels that were both modern in spirit and impeccable in execution. Pieces of this caliber not only embody the stylistic codes of interwar Paris, but also offer a tangible link to the discreet but vital workshops whose artisanship underpinned the renown of the great maisons.

755 VAN CLEEF & ARPELS, A FINE NATURAL PEARL AND DIAMOND RING, centring on a white pearl weighing 11.63cts, flanked with clusters of oval, marquise and circularcut diamonds to the shoulders in platinum, French control mark, Van Cleef and Arpels maker’s lozenge, stamped V.C.A, PT950 and numbered 19835, size L £30,00040,000

Accompanied by GCS report number 57853977 dated 11th September 2025 stating that the white pearl measures 12.71 x 12.83 x 10.49 and is natural saltwater

Exceptional materials have always been paramount to Van Cleef & Arpels. The ethos behind their focus on quality and individual character when selecting gemstones for their jewellery is best summarised by Claude Arpels’ statement: ‘Chaque pierre a une âme qui lui est propre’ (‘Each stone has a soul of its own’). Pearls are a case in point, prized for their natural luster and elegance, as well as their intrinsic rarity due to the low yield and difficulty of their sourcing, they have appeared in notable Van Cleef & Arpels jewels across the decades. The ‘Pampille Earrings’ of 1924, featuring a black and a white pearl below Art Deco diamond drops, are an early example of this gemstone being afforded a prominent compositional function. At Woolley & Wallis, we have had the honour to recently offer another exceptional pair of Van Cleef & Arpels natural pearl and diamond earrings, dating from the 1950s and bearing a significant heritage all of their own (Fine Jewellery, 16th April 2025, Lot 493, sold for £75,600 inc. Buyer’s Premium). The present ring is in the same tradition, featuring an array of fine quality diamonds around a large natural pearl weighing an impressive 11.63cts with wonderful colour and lustre.

756 A FRENCH ART DECO DIAMOND TIARA / NECKLACE, of graduating geometric design, set with circularcut and baguettecut diamonds weighing approximately 25.00cts, mounted in platinum, detaching from the base metal frame to form a necklace, inner curve of tiara frame 42cm, tiara height to the centre 3.4cm, necklace length 35.5cm, stamped with a maker’s lozenge, French control marks for platinum

£30,00050,000

A strong geometric design and the prolific use of diamonds and platinum give the present lot its unmistakably Art Deco quality. Although all the big French houses produced recognisably Art Deco jewellery, Mauboussin epitomised this combination of features from 1929, when it introduced its 'Joaillerie blanche', or 'white jewellery'. This systematically featured the pairing of diamonds and platinum, often turning the compositional relationship between the two on its head. One of their innovations was the prominence afforded for the first time to the use of platinum, as the mounts came to the fore, becoming more than mere supports to the diamonds. This daring approach to jewellery design was typical of Mauboussin, which set itself apart for its experimental use of materials and compositions at this date. A particularly audacious design in this vein was the 'Marteau' brooch of 1935. It took the motif of geometric diamondset borders centred with larger individual diamonds, similar to those seen in the present lot, a step further, by entrusting the thrust of the composition to bold angular structures, often in carved rock crystal, framing the gemset elements. Its striking trapeziodal design became arguably the quintessential Mauboussin design of the 1930s, echoed in the geometric motifs seen anchoring the design of the present lot. Another favourite feature of Mauboussin at this time, as with other French design houses, was the challenge to design transformable jewellery. Stimulated in part by the constrictions of the Great Depression, it became particularly popular from the mid1930s, exhibited to great acclaim at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1937 and later the New York World's Show of 1939, which closed this decade of jewellery design on the eve of the Second World War. The tiara / necklace conversion is a particularly happy combination and one that was wellknown before the emergence of the transformable jewellery of the 1930s.

757 AN IMPRESSIVE DIAMOND FRINGE NECKLACE, composed of a row of pearshaped diamond drops, the central three drops weighing approximately 2.70cts, 2.10cts and 1.60cts, all suspended from a collar of graduated round brilliantcut diamonds, mounted in platinum, total approximate diamond weight 70.00cts, maker’s mark, stamped Pt950, numbered No576, length 39.5cm £50,00070,000

VALUATIONS

Valuations are a core part of our business and are usually carried out by a senior specialist or directors. Accuracy, speed and above all confidentiality are paramount.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual client’s needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

Woolley & Wallis valuations are accepted by all leading insurance companies.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
