ARMCHAIR ART FAIR THE

FOREWORD

As Victor Meldrew might have said: “I don’t believe it !… There are people with no pictures on their walls!” This was said in some astonishment by a colleague who was house hunting when minimalism had taken an icy grip on interior design.

We assume that as you’re in receipt of the catalogue you don’t fall into this category. Welcome then to the sixth edition of THE ARMCHAIR ART FAIR, an adult almanack of painting pleasure! We’re sure you will find much to enjoy and hopefully be encouraged to make a purchase. All participating dealers are well known specialists in their field and happy to supply further information, so don’t hesitate to pick up the phone or drop them an email. Sales can be numerous and rapid! With over 480 pictures to choose from there should be something for all pockets and all tastes.

Post Covid, Trump’s tariffs and the continuing horrors of war, there has been little to celebrate recently, so it’s no surprise that the art market has been struggling a little. The good news for buyers is that prices are down and expectations moderated. Celebrity ‘influencers’ are on the wane and auction houses have realised that the future is not comprised solely of ‘non fungible tokens’. Traditional pictures, ancient and modern, are making a come back!

So as the days draw in why not pull up a chair to your wood burning stove (before the climate activists ban them), pour yourself a drink (before the kill joys arrive) light a cigar and indulge in the enticing passion of perusing pictures (no age verification required!)

Our thanks as always go to John Rae-Smith and his late wife Felicity, whose idea this was during covid, and to all the loyal clients who have supported the catalogue since.

Enjoy the show!

The importance of Bayou Bend as a Houston cultural treasure and its cultural beauty and elegance led President George Herbert Bush to select its dining room as the setting for Houston’s July 9, G7 Economic Summit of Industrialised Nations Leaders’ Dinner.

Margaret Thatcher, Francois Mitterand and Helmut Kohl were among the eight world leaders present that night, all seated around the dining table Miss Hogg had used in the room for decades. The centrepiece of many important stories but none quite as historic as the 1990 G7 dinner.

His most famous being “Les vingt-huit jours de Clarette”, an operetta on a military theme with an ingenue heroine. It ran for 236 performances and was revived eight times before being made into a film.

RICHARD ANSDELL (1815-1885)

LADY CAROLINE HARRIET TOWNELEY WITH HER DAUGHTERS CAROLINE AND EMILY OUTSIDE CROXTETH HALL

Oil on canvas

44” x 55 ½”

Signed ‘Rich. Ansdell/ 1841’

£16,500

During the early stages of his career Richard Ansdell focused on portraits of the aristocracy to earn income and one of his principal patrons was William Molyneux, the 2nd Earl of Sefton. Painted in 1841, this work depicts William Molyneux’s daughter, Lady Caroline Harriet Towneley (1803-1866), with her daughters Caroline and Emily outside her family home Croxteth Hall. The black veiled top hat placed on the chair suggests that this is a tribute in mourning for one of Caroline’s brothers, who both died in 1841. All three family figures gaze towards the pentimento of a ghostly figure at the right-hand side of the canvas. The groom is facing the other way out of respect and the straw hat and strewn flowers beneath the chair symbolise how the happy days of summer are now over with the death of a beloved brother and uncle.

Exhibited:

Edinburgh, Malcolm Innes Gallery; Lancashire, Lytham Hall; and London, Richard Green Gallery, Richard Ansdell R.A. 1815-1885, A Centenary Exhibition, 1985, no. 8 (as Family group with hunters and pet dogs).

In the centre sits Brechin Cathedral and its notable round tower dating to the eleventh century. This landscape was engraved (without huntsmen) by the artist in 1848.

Watercolour and pencil

8½” x 17”

Signed ‘Snaffles’ and titled £3,250

During the Second World War, Snaffles served in the Home Guard and helped with the camouflage of airfields and gasometers. He likely drew this scene from a training exercise undertaken by the Parachute Regiment. Churchill directed the War Office to investigate founding such a regiment in response to the success of German airborne operations and training of the 'Paras' subsequently took place at the No. 1 Parachute Training School, RAF Ringway. Much was expected of these soldiers, who were often outnumbered and outgunned when parachuting into action, hence Snaffles' exclamation: 'Gosh! They do ask them lads a question!'.
