Gilded

Golden Treasures of Georgian Furniture

Mackinnon Fine Furniture is delighted to present a exhibition, Gilded: Golden Treasures of Georgian Furniture, at our St James’s London gallery from 22 June to 5 July 2017. The exhibition will feature a curated selection of exquisite eighteenth century English furniture that highlights the prominence of gilding during this historic era.

A George I Gilt Gesso Card Table England, circa 1720

The exhibition explores the lavish use of gilded decoration on furniture throughout the Georgian age. Gilding is more than just a decorative accent: it was a formidable statement of power, prestige, and undoubtedly, wealth. The practice of gilding dates back to the ancient Egyptians and has been used extensively throughout almost every culture from antiquity through to contemporary art. The exhibition’s focus on eighteenth century gilding in England offers an opportunity to understand the importance of this decorative style to Georgian England.

A Gilt Gesso Bureau Bookcase Attributed to James Moore England, circa 1720

This magnificent gilt-gesso bureau is arguably one of the finest pieces of English furniture made in the eighteenth century. The incredible craftsmanship of this brilliantly worked bureau reflects the work of the finest artisans for what was almost certainly a noble or royal patron.

The bureau was originally made as a pair and was likely destined for the Portuguese market during the reign of King Dom João V (r.1709-1750), perhaps for the king himself or one of his closest courtiers.

A George III Giltwood Mirror Attributed to John & William Linnell England, circa 1765

This outstanding gilt gesso card table is one of only four known examples.

This mirror is of magnificent scale and highlights the best of exuberant carved detail and fluidity of design.

One of the pair of chairs shown here typifies the excellent craftsmenship of the Linnell firm.

These torcheres relate to the work of James Moore and feature fine gesso work.
