The following two lots were the property of Major George Davey, a well known shot of his day and friend of Major Burrard amongst others. Major George Davey, from Bristol tobacco family Franklin Davey, lived at Kinnersley Castle, Herefordshire and Lyston Court, Llanwarne, Herefordshire. A typical Edwardian country gentleman, he favoured all country pursuits, particularly if it came with a loud bang! Appleby, Engraver’ and ‘M Lingard, Gunmaker’, the breeches and rib with fine feather details, the frame and locks engraved in typical Appleby style with flowing plumage, talons and highly detailed stylised themes around the mythical phoenix, the trigger plate with golden flames, the action base with beak and eyes, the fences carved in a similar manner, the safety catch with further golden flame detail, gold lined cocking indicators, 14 3/4-inch highly figured stock, 6lb. 10oz., nitro proof The gun retains all of its original finish and appears virtually unused. Artist Resale Right applicable on the hammer price. Other Appleby commissions included “The Scottish Lace Gun”, “The Woodcock Gun”, “The Raven Gun” (for the Royal Armouries) and “The Pike Gun” (sold at Sotheby’s, Gleneagles in 1994). “I have always had my own ideas a about how a gun should be engraved, so that the engraving is in harmony with the colour and the form and the use of the gun. The concept gradually developed in my mind until the late 1970s and it was not until 1980 that I could afford to purchase guns ‘in the white’ to engrave and so be free of the gunmakers’ influences. The first to be engraved in 1981 was a sidelock by John Wilkes which was engraved with woodcock feathers. The first gun actually finished was “The Crocodile Gun”, a round action by David McKay Brown, followed by “The Pike Gun”, which was engraved with fish scales, and then “The Raven Gun” for the Royal Armouries. These guns form a series of surface textured decoration that naturally blends with the form of the gun so that the artist’s work does not dominate the total object. Careful attention to each part of the gun was taken, sometimes subtly reforming a lever to remove sharp points. Malcolm Appleby was born in West Wickham in 1946. He trained at Beckenham School of Art, Ravensbourne College of Art, Central School of Arts and Crafts, Sir John Cass School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He started his career as an engraver in 1969, developing new techniques for silver engraving and gold fusing on to steel. Malcolm Appleby is now the foremost gun engraver in the United Kingdom and his famous “Raven Gun” is housed in the Royal Armouries. His many commissions include the engraving of the orb on the Prince of Wales coronet, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes Trophy for De Beers, the 500th Anniversary silver cup for the London Assay Office and major silver cmmn (cup and cover) for the Royal Museum of Scotland. Malcolm Appleby made the seal for the Victoria and Albert Museum and was commissioned to make the silver centrepiece for the New Scottish Parliament. He also has examples of his work in many collections throughout the world. Malcolm Appleby was a member and past Chairman of the Crathes, Drumoak and Durris Community Council and is founder member and chairman of the British Art Postage Stamp Society and a member of the British Art Medal Society and Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Malcolm Appleby is a Liveryman of the Goldsmiths’ Company and an honorary member of the Strathtay and Grandtully SWRI.

Lot 141 SYMES & WRIGHT A FINE 12-BORE SINGLE TRIGGER SIDELOCK EJECTOR OVER AND UNDER GUN, NO. OU01, “THE BIRD OF PREY” GUN 28-inch barrels with 2 3/4-inch chambers, about 1/4 choke borings, matted solid rib and gold lined breeches, the frame, locks and top lever engraved in bold relief with scrolling foliage and mythical creatures, the locks and action base engraved with scenes of birds of prey in flight, signed by the engraver Rashid L. Hadi, retaining all of its bright cyanide hardened finish, rolled edge trigger guard, 14 1/2-inch highly figured stock with pistol grip, 7lb. 10oz., nitro proof, in its maker’s brassbound oak and leather case with canvas outer cover The gun was completed in 1990 and appears little used. It is engraved to an exceptional standard by Rashid L. Hadi who has gone on to complete much exceptional work for Westley Richards amongst others. It was the first over and under gun completed by Symes & Wright and was used in all of the firm’s initial promotional and marketing material. It is sold with a comprehensive file containing numerous articles and brochures detailing the gun and its construction, as well as the background of the maker. Symes & Wright was formed as a gunmaker in London in 1987. Both Peter Symes and Alex Wright had previously worked for James Purdey & Sons and as young gunmakers had decided to set up business on their own. With a flair for design and marketing and a fresh outlook, the company was quickly established as a serious competitor to the existing London makers. At a time when the London trade was only slowly pulling out of recession, and was perceived as old and stuffy, Symes and Wright were like a breath of fresh air. During the company’s short history it produced some of the best guns to come out of London since the 1930s. To quote from one of the company’s advertisements, “We are not trading on a reputation established over a century ago, nor do we waste energy marketing luxury goods associated with our name. Our business is quite simply building the finest sporting guns money can buy - without compromise, without exception”. Unfortunately orders dwindled with the economic downturn of the early 1990s and the firm ceased trading in April 1995. Ironically this was just when the trade was emerging from recession. Production was modest with side-by-side production reaching serial number 36 and over and under gun numbers reaching serial number 14.

3. EXAMINATION OF LOTS

5. BIDDING AT AUCTION

(a) The contractual relationship of Gavin Gardiner Limited and Sellers with prospective Buyers is governed by:(i) these Conditions of Business for Buyers;

(a) GGs knowledge of lots is partly dependent on information provided by the Seller and GG is unable to exercise exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Each lot is available for examination before sale. Bidders are responsible for carrying out examinations and research before sale to satisfy themselves over the condition of lots and accuracy of descriptions.

(a) GG has absolute discretion to refuse admission to the auction. Before sale, Bidders must complete a Registration Form and supply such information and references as GG requires. Bidders are personally liable for their bid and are jointly and severally liable with their principal, if bidding as agent (in which case GG’s prior and express consent must be obtained).

(b) All oral and/or written information provided to Bidders relating to lots, including descriptions in the catalogue, condition reports or elsewhere are statements of GG’s opinion and not representations of fact. Estimates may not be relied on as a prediction of the selling price or value of the lot and may be revised from time to time at GG’s absolute discretion.

(b) GG advises Bidders to attend the auction, but GG will endeavour to execute absentee written bids provided that they are, in GG’s opinion, received in sufficient time and in legible form.

GAVIN GARDINER LIMITED’S AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEE If Gavin Gardiner Limited sells an item of Property which is later shown to be a “Counterfeit”, subject to the terms below Gavin Gardiner Limited will rescind the sale and refund the Buyer the total amount paid by the Buyer to Gavin Gardiner Limited for that Property, up to a maximum of the Purchase Price. The Guarantee lasts for one (1) year after the date of the relevant auction, is for the benefit of the Buyer only and is non-transferable. “Counterfeit” means an item of Property that in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion is an imitation created with the intent to deceive over the authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description of such matters is not included in the catalogue description for the Property. Property shall not be considered Counterfeit solely because of any damage and/or restoration and/or modification work (including, but not limited to, recolouring, refinishing or rebarreling). Please note that this Guarantee does not apply if either:(i) the catalogue description was in accordance with the generally accepted opinions of scholars and experts at the date of the sale, or the catalogue description indicated that there was a conflict of such opinions; or

(ii) the only method of establishing at the date of the sale that the item was a Counterfeit would have been by means of processes not then generally available or accepted, unreasonably expensive or impractical; or likely to have caused damage to or loss in value to the Property (in Gavin Gardiner Limited’s reasonable opinion); or (iii) there has been no material loss in value of the Property from its value had it accorded with its catalogue description. To claim under this Guarantee, the Buyer must:(i) notify Gavin Gardiner Limited in writing within one (1) month of receiving any information that causes the Buyer to question the authenticity or attribution of the Property, specifying the lot number, date of the auction at which it was purchased and the reasons why it is believed to be Counterfeit; and

Gavin Gardiner Limited has discretion to waive any of the above requirements. Gavin Gardiner Limited may require the Buyer to obtain at the Buyer's cost the reports of two independent and recognised experts in the relevant field and acceptable to Gavin Gardiner Limited. Gavin Gardiner Limited shall not be bound by any reports produced by the Buyer, and reserves the right to seek additional expert advice at its own expense. In the event Gavin Gardiner Limited decides to rescind the sale under this Guarantee, it may refund to the Buyer the reasonable costs of up to two mutually approved independent expert reports, provided always that the costs of such reports have been approved in advance and in writing by Gavin Gardiner Limited.

(ii) return the Property to Gavin Gardiner Limited in the same condition as at the date of sale and be able to transfer good title in the Property, free from any third party claims arising after the date of the sale. PHOTOGRAPHY
