Introduction Sale 100.

This, the second half of our 1500 lot, 100th sale, marks Apex’s début both as a London auction and as a live auctioneer, offering buyers the facility to bid online in real time. It is simple coincidence that sale 100 should fall around the same time as the London 2010 international stamp exhibition and putting them together seemed both the obvious and the right thing to do. To mark our London début, and to celebrate our 100th auction, we are offering 500 lots and £500,000 worth of high quality material in this section. The first part (approx 100 lots) comprises general and single country mixed lots and collections, the majority intact as received. The remaining 400 or so lots are of sets and single items, with many rare and sometimes unique pieces, especially in the Great Britain section. Whether the prime motivation is financial or philatelic, buyers looking for the rare and unusual will find plenty to choose from, as single items or complete collections alike. On 20th August 2008 Apex Philatelics Ltd became part of the Noble Investments (UK) PLC group of companies. In the approximately 18 months since then, worldwide economic conditions have been turbulent; and yet, anecdotal evidence from related trades in: banknotes, autographs, antique maps, toys and suchlike, suggests that it is not only stamps and coins, but markets for most (and possibly all) collectibles which have remained strong. At times of uncertainty, there is an understandable wish for people to protect their capital. With banks offering so little for cash deposits and equity markets a roller-coaster ride, some capital has undoubtedly come into the collectibles markets - as Apex and our sister company, Baldwin’s, readily attest from their own specialist fields. The emphasis here must be on the word “some.” Most of our income comes from collectors, not speculators. There is undoubtedly a warm glow to be had from putting together a collection over the years, knowing that a capital asset is growing - maybe sufficiently so even to make a profit - alongside all the pleasure to be had. The advent of internet-based selling, especially e-Bay and similar on-line auctions, has attracted countless thousands of new collectors, or at least re-kindled many a latent interest. We are therefore delighted to be offering all 500 of these exceptional lots for sale online to bidders all over the world. Prices are a convenient mechanism for balancing supply and demand; they rise or fall accordingly. Viewed through the narrow lens of whether there are more or fewer stamp collectors amongst today’s juveniles, it is understandable that some people arrive at pessimistic conclusions about the future of philately and predict financial Armageddon. I have to say, I do not accept such a viewpoint. Even if it were all simply some big Numbers Game – and manifestly, it isn’t – such an analysis ignores the massive changes in worldwide disposable incomes in the past few years – in China and India to name but two. It is no coincidence that the stamps of those two countries, close to philatelic junk as recently as 25 years ago, are now among the most sought-after, with price rises of staggering proportions. Stamp collecting remains a major hobby throughout the world; in Asia its popularity, as a proportion of the population, is probably at its greatest. Formal statistics have not been compiled; some suggest there may be as many stamp collectors in China, than in the rest of the world put together. Whatever the truth, in the emerging economies, there lies a vast and substantially untapped market which, with rising incomes, alone should underpin the stamp economy for several decades. Mixed Lots and Collections 1001

ALL WORLD 1840/90 collection of the pre 1890 ‘classic’ issues of the world in beautiful printed Maury album, offered intact as received. Many countries have most spaces filled, and whilst [inevitably] the condition is a little mixed in places [odd thin, repair etc] with the occasional reprint, the overall impression is of a quality well above average for this period. The following description is by necessity brief, but bear in mind that most countries [and indeed pages] contain significant and highly catalogued items. The GB incl fine 4 margin 1840 1d black and 2d blue, a set of Embossed, some fine surface printed and high5 values incl 5/- rose pl 2, 10/- Maltese Cross [SG 128] and £1 green [SG 212]. The Europe is particularly strong and we note lovely ranges of Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Denmark, similarly Germany with notably fine German States. Useful Hungary and Austria follow, with strong Switzerland and Belgium. Very fine and valuable France contains many highlights [some really stunning examples], as does the Spain and there is very worthwhile and difficult Italy and States. Finally from Europe, very nice Russia, Rumania and Turkey noted. There is less concentration on the rest of the world but still plenty of worthwhile material. The Africa incl useful Egypt, Azores, Cape ‘triangles’ [incl 4d Woodblock] and Mauritius [incl 1848 1d], whilst from Asia we note India and States, Ceylon [incl 4d imperf] and Japan [incl 1885 Telegraphs 2s to 1y]. Oceania has Australian States, a little NZ and Danish W Indies. From North America we note Canada and Provinces, a range of USA [particularly ‘back of book’ material], Mexico, Cuba, Guadeloupe and lovely French Cols [all spaces filled, incl scarce 1872 2c and 4c]. Finally South America, pretty solid throughout, especially Brazil, Venezuela, Chile, Peru and Argentina [noted also Falklands ½d bisect]. One of the features of this outstanding collection [characteristic of Maury albums] is the abundance of Telegraphs, Revenues, Stationery ‘cut outs’ and other ‘back of book’ items [often very scarce and seldom seen]. A magnificent collection! Est: £20,000-25,000

COMMONWEALTH QV-GV mint and (mostly) substantial used collection in single volume New Ideal album (interleaved), of which the overwhelming majority of stamps are used, generally good/fine or better, most countries represented and in the first half of the album (A-M countries) the pages are generally well filled. Of note (all used unless noted) Ascension with 1st o/pts and Badge to 3/- (both missing 2/-), 1924 complete, Australia, incl Roos to £1 (grey), Harbour 5/-, Bahamas incl QV and GV £1, Barbados 90% complete, Good run of Bechuanaland with several Mafeking o/pts., Bermuda various vals to GV 12/6d, Br Sols to 10/- (both), Br. COMMONWEALTH 1840/1936 mint collection in two printed Imperial albums, a fine range of material with most areas well represented. A major attribute is the lack of highly catalogued early material, with most value in later QV, EDVII and GV. Some high values are noted [Gibraltar and Antigua ‘red’ £1’s for instance], a huge amount of £10 to £50 calalogue items and generally a lovely, clean collection. Cat £38,000+. Est: £6500-8000

USA 1847/1990 comprehensive used collection in printed Minkus album, relatively few gaps and a wealth of better material. BARBADOS 1852/92 mint collection of 48 QV issues on pages, all identified with many better [and very difficult] stamps. We note SG 7/9, 11, 12 [no gum], 26, 29, 33, 43b, 45 [scarce], 49 [scarce], 52, 59 [scarce], 60 [no gum], 61, 63/4, 71, 73, 77, 79, 81 and 83 [no gum]. Also, without gum and some trimmed perfs, the very scarce SG 13 [APS Cert]. A fine collection. Cat £15,500+.
