As a non-departmental arm of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the National Portrait Gallery is a charity governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Prime Minister. The National Portrait Gallery is also recognised by the Humanities Research Council as an Independent Research Organisation.
