As expected, we have been working hard over the past twenty some months to assemble this offering of exciting Red Angus bulls, and we are truly thankful for the interest you have in our cattle and program. Over the last few years, we have been very fortunate, delivering bulls all over North America; from Canada to Mexico, Montana to Florida. The feedback has been positive and encouraging, and we can’t wait to get this year’s offering out and proving themselves as well. The genetics represented this year are among the breeds’ finest; some you’re undoubtedly familiar with, and some you’ve probably never heard of. Breed improvement is altogether our foremost objective. There are certain Red Angus breeders that are so evidently defined in the kind, pedigrees, and EPDs that make them, them. We certainly respect that. All too often though, you’ll find breeders that become inherently narrow-minded, chasing the certain trends or traits that they feel have the biggest impact on their own, personal bottom-line. However, we’re keeping an open mind to different lines of genetics, ultimately to breed the kind of Red Angus cattle that are the most problem-free, low-maintenance, and profitable for the commercial cow-calf producer. If we’re being honest with ourselves, the selection of purebred bulls around the United States is vast, overly saturated, and mind-boggling. Every publication, newspaper, or scroll through social media leaves you inundated with bulls for sale. With that recognized, it leaves us with the question, “Why buy our bulls?” Ultimately, you need a bull that is suited for your environment, and gets your cows settled. Fertility and libido are mandatory. Secondly, who desires to invest in a bull that breaks down structurally within the first year? Sadly, it happens more often than not, and we feel certain breeders almost enjoy the idea of preconditioning a customer to believe they need to come by a new bull every single year. The Team
JEFF & TAMI KELLER, OWNERS of Niobrara Red Angus, grew up in Niobrara, Nebraska. In their years around home, they grew up on Tami’s family’s cattle ranch, Leader Angus Farm, helping to complete the day to day of ranch responsibilities. Years later, after college and law school and establishing residence in Lincoln, NE, the Keller’s knew they wanted a connection back to their roots; also wanting their three boys Sam, Jack and Ben to have a chance to be involved in agriculture. Thus, Niobrara Red Angus was established. Although they are not on-farm most business days, the effort and team they have developed, they feel is second to none. JACOB BATHKE, RANCH MANAGER, resides and oversees Niobrara Red Angus each day. Born and raised in Niobrara, he is the fourth generation to graduate from Niobrara High. He manages and oversees the daily operations of the ranch, and is responsible for their wellbeing. He says he owes most of his cattle knowledge to Kent Snowdon, who got him started in the cattle industry about 15 years ago. Jacob graduated from Northeast Community College with an Associates Degree in Agronomy. He’s grateful for the opportunity to work for the Keller Family, and to be able to work with such high quality seedstock. He would also like to acknowledge and thank his brother Shane, and other friends and family that help him time to time throughout the year. MEG PENROD, OFFICE MANAGER, resides in Lincoln Nebraska with her husband Tanner, daughter Sloan, and their extra large sweet golden doodle Foster. Meg received her BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she spent most of her time throwing pottery. She can often be found drawing, painting or creating some work of art in the middle of the night. She spent the last 12 years working in interior design but her love for people and animals is what drew her to work for Niobrara Red Angus. GARRETT KNEBEL, MARKETING MANAGER, resides in Bozeman, MT with his wife Katelyn. There they own and operate Storey Hereford Ranch & Harmony Hill, a progressive Hereford & Red Angus operation focused on seedstock for the commercial cow-calf operator. With a degree from Oklahoma State University, Garrett’s main responsibilities for Niobrara Red Angus include marketing, consulting, breeding, and seedstock selection. In his spare time, he travels the country visiting with fellow Red Angus breeders and judging livestock shows.

Philosophy Vision
In the simplest of description, our long-term goal is to bridge the divide in the Red Angus breed between correctly structured “phenotype” cattle with a disadvantage in the availability of genetic data and information, with the typical, number-chasing U.S. Red Angus cow; genetic history and contemporaries of plenty, with a compromised foot structure that has simply been overlooked for far too many years. In our extensive travels, we have seen herds of all different shapes and sizes, priorities and unimportance’s, trends and age-old beliefs. Many, not all, of the cattle that appear to be the most elite in the Red Angus database, are in actuality some of the poorest footed, worst structured cattle in the breed that have compromised longevity. We are led to believe it’s because decisions have been made in a swivel chair, and not in the middle of their cowherd. Breeders that have mated cows based on the Planned Mating calculator on the Red Angus website have looked past the visual appraisals that HAVE to take place. Top 1% doesn’t mean guaranteed to breed for 5 years. More times than not, their feet are genetically debilitating and you find them shuffling in when the cow herd is gathered in the fall because their toes have grown crossed and they’re in pain. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve found cattle that prove their longevity. Feet are not trimmed, cows live through their entire productive life and actually make you a greater return on that initial investment. BUT, if you were to look at their EPDs on paper, you may find yourself saying, “Why would I breed to this cow-killing, nanny-goat performing creature with the marbling of a Belgian Blue?” In reality, these cattle calve, perform, and grade equal to or even better than the data-focused cattle that clearly display a strong advantage in their genetic profile. Our thought is, why would I buy a bull perceived to be in the Top 1% for the Herdbuilder Index, when his toes are mal-shaped and I’m going to have to worry about him breeding enough cows to keep me in business?! In closing, our goal is the crossover of these distinct sectors of the breed. Our cattle may never be Top 1% for a certain trait, but if they prove to have longevity and sire calves that guarantee the buyer gets a solid return on his investment, then that’s when we know we are headed down the correct path. We are following that path now; identifying and utilizing certain bulls or cows that we know provide enough problem-free longevity and profitability for a solid ROI. However, it takes time; lots of time to identify those individuals. And it’s our goal here at Niobrara Red Angus to be able to offer that kind to you. “INDEXES & PERCENTILES SHIFT DRASTICALLY; DESPERATE AND BAFFLING. MONDAY YOU OWN THE BREED LEADER. FRIDAY, HE’S JUST A CALF.” Cattle producers sell their feeder and slaughter cattle based on what they actually weigh on a scale. When investing in seedstock, it is important to be provided with actual performance data rather than only computer generated projections that change weekly, can fluctuate dramatically and are only as relevant as the accuracy values behind them. EPDs are a selection tool but alone do not create great cattle; real breeding progress requires breeding beyond the numbers for real-world production traits. Selections and matings based on feet, udders, fertility and pounds; that has created consistency, progress, and lessened the cost of mistakes.

In my opinion, the most exciting, most highly anticipated mating ever before in the Red Angus breed lies here in these first three sons of 113Z sired by the world famous, now deceased, Six Mile John Wick 882E. With only 4 John Wick sons on offer this year, the supply is short. This past summer while walking through the bulls prior to weaning, we’d stumble upon one of these brothers hidden in the brush-filled breaks along the Missouri River, and it was absolutely heart-stopping. Not only have these Wick brothers been standouts since early days, but they are so similar, it comes down to the minor details that tell them apart. An absolute BEAST! Full Brothers to U2 Township 17G are on offer here in Lots 4 – 8, the $130,000 Sale Topper from the Finale U2 Ranch Bull Sale in 2021. These full brothers are truly a sight to see in person. I personally remember pushing Township around the pen before he sold that spring, and this bull challenges his mass, flexibility and presence. 1278 has stood out for a long time. An absolute truck, it’s not possible to put any more power, middle and dimension in a bull. For a bull to be this outrageously massive, and yet still get out and travel like he does is truly incredible. We are proud to have the maternal giants in our cow herd that we do, and that said, 0257’s mom is an absolute stunner of a cow. W178D we purchased from the Lautenschlager program in Washington, and her calves always rise to the top. As we all continue to share our thoughts on which bulls rise to the top for each other, 1126 seems to always be mentioned. We were fortunate enough to bring U2 Dominion’s dam, Hidee Ho 459D, back with us from the Complete Herd Dispersal of U2 Ranch back in 2019. We didn’t know at the time how consistently positive an impact Dominion would have on the breed, but we are so thankful to have 459D working for us as a donor cow at Niobrara. To support the claim of consistency, recently, a Full Sibling heifer to 1126 was named Grand Champion Red Angus Female at the 2022 National Western Stock Show. I have never been around a bull and witnessed such a spread from birth to yearling in my lifetime. We chose to sample this bull based off of the stout, power bulls we saw North of the border. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf, have 35-40% influence on calving ease. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what is thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65-70 mph, and what is thought to be 70-80 lbs, may actually be 80-90 lbs. Remember, if everything is relevant, increased growth, frame and performance will increase birth weight. A longer-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1,200-1,250 lbs. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus, a 1,200 pound cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature size and performance of your cattle.

One of the youngest bulls in the offering, but he’s got that Big Timber dark red color you just can’t take your eyes off of. A Big Timber son with some added calving ease, he’s got a great spread both actual and on paper, from -2.2 to 100. Out of a 2085Z daughter that hits it out of the park every time, her Wick son last year sold to Fischer Red Angus in Montana. Again, these sons by the now deceased Big Timer are rare.

Another younger bull by Big Timber, you talk about stretch, body, and structural quality. He’s got as much length from nose to tail as any bull on offer. Top 5% WW, Top 10% YW, this bull will pack on the pounds in a set of feeder calves. If you didn’t know, one of the only Big Timber daughters ever marketed was recently named the Reserve National Champion Female at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City this January. Sired by the new Herd Bull for Harmony Hill, U2 Privilege 243G has knocked it out of the park on his first calf crop. This son of 303D is arguably as fault free as any in the sale.
