INFORMAL UNDER STRUCTURAL NEW DEFINITION AND DIALECTIC OF PUBLICITIES

PURPOSE : Master's Dissertation Project

DURATION : Jan2020-Jun2022

WORKING TYPE : Individual Work

This dissertation focuses on the construction of city localization, the influence of local humanity, and the possibility of using space design as an urban reconstructing method. The research object was built in the 1970s when the population expanded dramatically, and people’s livelihoods should be governed and rescheduled. The new living vision was established by modern elite architects and the government. Over time, those imaginations were replaced by the local lifestyle. After spaces have been built, the local everyday life will slowly take shape. The local identity gradually became a

new urbanscape. This project records the connection between the community, the present urbanscape, and the city’s history. All the aspects are being as the base references of this project, to reach the goal of urban reconstruction as a different approach which is seldom discussed in the Taiwanese architecture field. In the design approach, use the methods of reinforcement and layer adding as replacements for transplant and rebuild. To face the open space diversity of the site, the design approaches will adjust the differences between each one, therefore, proposing a practical solution.

ISSUE 1 : Roundabout Based City Entry

Roundabout used to be a method to enhance the government's power and cultivate Taipei's first impression. However, the citizen's

walking path was cut out. It became a barrier between urban spaces. The roundabout system is not only a system that couldn't be adapted but is fully abandoned later.

ISSUE 2 : Life Under Modern Plan

In the post-war era, the city's space, due to financial reasons, was constructed under a rigid modernist plan. The urban space was

sharp and clean. Whereas, the local citizen reshape the urbanscape, opposing the regulation, from bottom to top. Gradually, it became a new localized regional city life.

URBAN SPACE RESHAPE : Walkable Vertical Community

The accessibility of the site is restricted by the huge mass and the orientation. By

reshaping open spaces on the urban scale, events can be reinforced. The new public space is able to generate better diversity and neighborhood life in open spaces.

BODY EXPERIENCED SPACE RESHAPE : Localized Life Regulation and Preservation

Non-regulated open space quality depends on each user's sense and

dedication to the community. Conducting certain rules in open space can preserve the local character of the space and provide a better quality of the space.

LOCALIZED PARK AGAINST CAPITALIST PLAN

PURPOSE : Design Workshop Project

DURATION : Jul.2020-Aug.2020

WORKING TYPE : Individual Work

The original project was built by MVRDV, which used to be Tainan China Town. Tainan City’s urban plan was centrally organized by the train station and connected with several roundabouts. Spreading with roads, roundabouts carry multiple functions like commercial and governmental facilities.

The old china town is located at the end of the commercial street and the conjunction between the business area and the port. The gigantic building is used to share collective memory, localized business, and local housing. However, a massive street construction was blocking

out the continuity of the commercial stores during the period, then China Town became a dark side of the city. In the next development stage, China Town was torn down and the site has endowed a new role as a water park to bring a vivid city life. Whereas, in order to manage the function, instead of familiar everyday life, a capitalized elitist and not climatic fitting space took part. This design project aims to alleviate the differences between the current project and the surrounding neighborhood. Combined with the current water park, the design purpose is to create a more locally friendly urban space.

The old China Town center collected many types of local events at the end of the street. However, the new project focus on capital events. I believe local communities can bring a more vivid urban life than just a regulated plaza.

TAIPEI RIPARIAN

A PATH ACROSS THE CITY'S BOUNDARY

PURPOSE : Design Competition Project

DURATION : Oct.2019-Dec.2019

WORKING TYPE : Team Work

CHARGING : Design Process, Final Board

Like other cities, Taipei’s development started with the development of the Dan-Sui river. The riverside has changed throughout the years. The city’s boundary was expanded, and the river space has been narrowed down. Other than that, due to Taiwan being located in an area that will frequently generate typhoons, floods are constantly happening in Taipei. Then, the government erects a series of floodwalls, the height reaches 8 meters. It cut off the connection between citizen’s life and the nature of the river. This project’s site is in an old town area that besides a bridge. The area’s environmental

scale maintained a pedestrian-friendly scale that was designed in the past. The new construction of the bridge and the six-lane road was aimed at the city’s function, which become a huge barrier to environmental connection. Despite the low accessibility created by the barrier, there is still an 8 meters floodwall. Although the bridge has stairs and pavements, the space experience is closed and inaccessible. Coping with this reality, this project rearranges the space based on the original structure and creates a highly accessible communication path and public space in the neighborhood.

Guangfu New Village is a civil servant village that planning with the thought of counterattacking the mainland of the provincial government. When Taiwan decided to eliminate the provincial government, the population of the village was dropping down. There are only a few amounts of spaces that are still in use. Despite the environment remaining the same, the local community vibe was no longer there. Under a condition that is nearly abolished, the requirement of temporary stay and a functional market does yet not vanish. An environment combined with historical artificial housing and nature

provides a relaxing opportunity to citizens. If the space can be flexibly reorganized, the space experience can not only be relaxing but the history can also be realized. The foundation of this project is based on the idea above. Considering how to reutilize fertile natural and historical resources, the project aims to provide a daily life plan. Using the five senses to create the space experience, the campus plan to make people feel the sense of the slow lifestyle that the village used to have. Moreover, let time perception be the major sensibility within nature and the environment surrounding the visitors.

STRATEGY : Frame & Scent

Using the architectural frame, people can establish each historical or natural scene of the village. As the first program is designed as a community classroom, knowledge can be taught and scenes can be sensed. The second program is based on the texture and the scent of the environment. Plants and stores, coffee shops and bakeries, can all be felt and in a time order. Therefore, visitors can immerse themselves in the environment.

Exhibitiob Visual Design l 2016

Location : Taichung City

Our imagination of the summer show is aiming to have a better outcome than just an exposure of our works. It starts with a thought of communication with citizens. To organize a communication way, we collect the dialogue of citizens' viewpoints on student exhibitions. To explore available urban space, we communicate with several NGO organizations and the local government. The part that I participated in is an open space under an aerial train. Moreover, to interact with people, we design a series of interactive events and decoration.

In this internship experience, I learned how important detail design is and how to transform design concepts into reality. Construction is always an issue that a practitioner can not avoid. Through the process of back and forth to complete a detailed design, the attitude which designer has will be clear and distinct. This experience can always call me back to the first place where I started my journey in architecture.

MULTIPLE VOLENTEERING EXPERIENCES

Local Community Participation l 2016-2022

Through out all my student life, I am more than welcome to attampt to community service. In all the things that I have done, I can always learn a lot from every role of the events. These experiences make me reconsider where I am and where to go.
